Matalan Returns Policy: 28 Days, Return Costs and Receipt Rules

The Matalan returns policy in the UK gives you 28 days to return unworn, undamaged items with tags attached: from the purchase date for store buys, or from the day an online order arrives. Returns of eligible items to Matalan stores are free (except Clearance Stores), tracked postal returns start at £2.99, and proof of purchase is required.

  • Matalan allows 28 days from the store purchase date or from the day an online order arrives; Matalan does not say how the days are counted.
  • Ordinary online orders can go back to stores free; Clearance Stores, electrical and large home items, and listed brands are excluded.
  • Postal returns use the Returns Portal with an order number and email; tracked returns start at £2.99, while faulty-item postage and listed supplier routes are free.
  • Matalan requires purchase evidence and names an order confirmation as acceptable proof, although store sections request the original receipt.
  • Matalan processes warehouse refunds within 14 days of receipt; Klarna takes 3–5 days after Matalan processes the return.

How Long Do You Have to Return Something to Matalan?

Matalan gives 28 days from purchase in store, or 28 days from receiving online items, under its standard policy. Goods must be unworn, undamaged and resaleable, in original undamaged packaging, with labels and tags attached.

Postal parcels need the original delivery note with its returns section completed. Non-resaleable change-of-mind goods may be refused and returned at your expense; the charge is not published. Fault-related rights are separate.

Does Your Parcel Need to Reach Matalan Within 28 Days?

Matalan does not publish whether creating, dropping off, scanning or delivering the return satisfies its postal deadline. The policy also leaves calendar versus working days and inclusive counting undefined: return a few days early, post well inside the window and keep tracking and proof of posting.

The Evri instructions add a separate seven-day limit: drop off a printed-label parcel within seven days; a print-in-store QR expires seven days after generation. Create the return when ready to post; generating a code does not extend the overall window.

Is There a Matalan Christmas Returns Extension for 2026?

As of 28 October 2026, Matalan had not published a 2026-specific Christmas returns notice. Its Help Centre has an undated FAQ allowing purchases from 1 October–24 December to be returned with a receipt by 31 January for refund or exchange, but gives no years.

Do not assume those dates cover 2026 purchases. Plan around the standard 28 days or ask Customer Services to confirm the extension for your order; retain purchase evidence either way.

Can You Return to Matalan Without a Receipt?

Matalan says no refund or exchange without proof of purchase. A missing paper receipt differs from having no evidence: the policy introduction accepts a receipt or order confirmation, while the store and refund sections on that same page request the original receipt.

Take the original receipt if available; keep online confirmation emails and delivery notes. If only an order confirmation supports a store purchase, ask Customer Services before relying on it. Gift receipts, card or Matalan Me lookups, ID substitutes and no-proof credit are unpublished, so do not assume these replace proof.

For faulty goods, GOV.UK recognises other evidence such as a bank statement. That does not promise acceptance for discretionary change-of-mind returns. To compare receipt rules at another value-fashion chain, see the Primark returns guide.

Does Matalan Charge for Returns?

Matalan store returns are free for eligible items; ordinary postal returns are paid by you, with tracked returns from £2.99, according to the Help Centre.

Route Charge Official source
Eligible store return Free Returns policy
Standard tracked post From £2.99 Help Centre
Faulty/damaged postage Free Returns policy
Listed supplier route Free Brand instructions
Electrical/large-item collection No fixed tariff published Terms

Exact carrier tariffs, whether fees are per item/order/parcel, payment stage and refund deductions are not published. Neither is a general restocking fee. Check the portal quote or ask Customer Services before agreeing to collection; absence of a tariff does not mean free. For a statutory cancellation, Matalan’s terms (8.8(b)) say a collection it arranges is charged at its usual carrier’s direct cost, and estimate that non-postable goods returned via the original delivery carrier should cost no more than the original delivery charge; ask for the actual quote.

Statutory cancellation refunds standard outbound delivery, with premium delivery capped at that rate. Faulty or misdescribed goods qualify for applicable delivery and reasonable return costs under Matalan’s terms. Ordinary partial or late voluntary returns have no published outbound-delivery promise. To compare store and postal charges at another high-street chain, see the Next returns guide.

How to Return to Matalan

Matalan’s route depends on the product and supplier. Check the brand and parcel paperwork before booking standard postage.

Returning to a Matalan Store

Eligible ordinary online and store purchases can go to a shop found through the Store Finder. Bring the item and purchase evidence, preferably the original receipt where available.

  1. Choose a store other than a Clearance Store.
  2. Check that the item is not electrical, a large home item or a listed supplier brand.
  3. Present the goods and proof for a refund.

Checkpoint: keep the refund confirmation. Avoid a wasted trip with excluded items; Cascade, We R Christmas and Widdop&Co also need clarification before travel.

Posting a Return With Evri

Use the Returns Portal with your order number, email and completed original delivery note ready.

  1. Choose a printed label or print-in-store QR for an Evri ParcelShop.
  2. Pack securely with the completed delivery note; dispose of broken glass safely before returning an item containing glass.
  3. Attach the whole printed label, or take the QR and order details for printing at the shop.
  4. Hand over within seven days and keep proof of posting until refunded.

Checkpoint: retain posting evidence and tracking. Each label/code is single-use and covers one order; do not combine orders or reuse it. A general postal address and ordinary Evri home collection are unpublished: follow the portal instructions.

Using an InPost Locker Without a Printer

Matalan’s InPost instructions require no shopper-printed label. Have the portal QR and securely packed return ready, including the completed delivery note.

  1. Check locker availability before travelling.
  2. Scan the QR at the locker.
  3. Place one parcel containing items from one order in one compartment; the carrier applies the label.

Checkpoint: keep handover evidence and tracking. Avoid treating the 1–3 working-day carrier estimate as refund timing: Matalan processing follows receipt. Postcode and island differences are unpublished; check the options offered for your order.

Electrical and Large Home Items: Arranging a Collection

Electrical and large home items require Customer Services collection rather than store handover. Matalan lists curtains/blinds, drawer units, large mirrors/storage boxes, lighting, nursery/outdoor furniture, rugs, tables/chairs/benches and wardrobes.

  1. Have purchase evidence and product details ready.
  2. Contact Customer Services on 0333 004 4444, 8am–6pm, seven days a week.
  3. Confirm the collection arrangements and charge before proceeding; no collection tariff is published; ask for the quote.

Checkpoint: note the collection date and any charge quoted for your item. Avoid booking ordinary postage before checking its supplier entry: some branded goods use the routes below.

Branded Products: Supplier Return Routes

Many listed third-party brands cannot go to Matalan stores and use their own free supplier route, generally within 28 days of receipt, in original condition and packaging with the completed delivery note. Use the brand entries on Matalan’s policy page and keep enclosed labels; unlisted items follow Matalan’s own policy.

Which Brands’ Instructions Are Unclear?

Matalan’s Cascade, We R Christmas and Widdop&Co entries word store eligibility both ways: each mentions store returns and also says not to return to Matalan stores. Do not take these goods to a store without confirmation; contact Customer Services or the supplier first.

Matalan Refunds: How Long Do They Take?

Matalan says it processes ordinary postal refunds within 14 days of receiving the returned items and sends confirmation in its refund policy. Keep proof of posting until the money arrives.

Stage Store return Postal return Klarna
Return window Store buys: 28 days from purchase; online buys: 28 days from receipt 28 days from receipt; cutoff action unpublished As applicable to purchase channel
Matalan processing / stated refund interval FAQ: up to 7 days, depending on bank/payment method Within 14 days of warehouse receipt; FAQ allows up to 14 days As applicable to return route
Separate bank/provider posting Not published Not published 3–5 days after Matalan processes return

The FAQ does not define these refund intervals as working days or isolate bank posting from its store estimate. Matalan does not publish a separate bank posting time. The refund amount and destination also depend on payment and discounts.

Gift Cards, Mixed Payments and Multibuy Refunds

Matalan normally refunds the original payment method. Gift Card, Refund Card and E-Gift Card payments normally return to the original card; mixed payments refund the gift-card portion first. Keep the card until refunded.

The returns policy reserves a cheque for some partial cancellation refunds, while gift-card terms allow an alternative Refund Card. Ask Customer Services which applies if the destination is unclear.

Returning every multibuy item refunds the multibuy total; returning one refunds its price less the offer discount. Gift cards themselves cannot be refunded or exchanged for cash.

Can You Exchange an Item at Matalan?

Matalan offers no postal exchanges, and its standard online FAQ says exchanges are unavailable: return for a refund and reorder. Full ordinary in-store exchange terms are unpublished; ask before travelling.

Some supplier entries offer exchange or refund; others offer refunds only. Turner Bianca exchanges go through Matalan Customer Service. The undated Christmas FAQ’s exchange wording is no year-round promise. If you want a direct exchange, compare the New Look returns guide.

What Matalan Won’t Take Back for a Change of Mind

Matalan’s voluntary restrictions apply once goods are worn, opened or their packaging is damaged; faulty-quality or unfit-for-purpose goods remain covered. The categories are:

  • Pierced earrings; cosmetics and fragrances.
  • Hats and hair accessories.
  • Duvets, duvet covers, pillows and mattresses.
  • DVDs and confectionery.
  • Underwear, shapewear, control wear and hosiery.
  • Swimwear, which specifically needs hygiene strips and tags intact.

Personalised goods cannot be returned for change of mind, including spelling/customisation errors you entered. Damaged or defective personalised goods may be replaced or refunded; contact the Personalised Momento Company promptly with customer/order details and a photo. Its stated response is within 24 working hours.

Gift cards are non-refundable; Per Scent and Rainbow Cosmetics require unopened goods. Matalan judges “resaleable” against the condition rules above (unworn, undamaged, original packaging, labels and tags attached), and the decision rests with Matalan under its voluntary policy. A fault requires the separate route below.

Faulty Items and Your UK Consumer Rights

Matalan preserves statutory rights separately from its 28-day change-of-mind offer. For an online order arriving faulty or damaged, contact Help Centre Get in Touch with order number, product name, fault details and photos where applicable. If you received the wrong item, use the same Get in Touch route with your order number, the item you received and the item you ordered; Matalan emails the next steps. Don’t book paid postage for a retailer error. A general in-store fault-assessment timetable is unpublished; ask how your case will be handled.

The Consumer Rights Act 2015 normally gives 30 days to reject qualifying faulty goods, starting the day after possession/ownership, delivery and any necessary installation have occurred. Section 20 makes the trader responsible for reasonable return costs, except your cost of returning in person to the original collection place. Refunds are due within 14 days of agreeing entitlement, normally by the same payment means.

Sale goods retain statutory rights. Changing your mind after buying in a shop does not itself create a legal refund right; Citizens Advice’s England guidance distinguishes faults from unwanted goods. Eligible online purchases have an additional cancellation route.

Cancelling an Online Order Within 14 Days

The Consumer Contracts Regulations 2013 normally let you cancel until 14 days after receipt, using the last delivery for split orders. You can cancel before delivery. Matalan’s policy describes a receipt-based start, while terms 8.3 say dispatch confirmation; both end by reference to delivery.

The policy says send back within 14 days of cancellation; terms 8.8(a) say 28. Safest: dispatch within 14 days without undue delay, meeting the statutory rule unless the trader arranges collection.

Matalan’s ordinary postal section says 14 days from warehouse receipt; its cancellation section and terms 8.5(c) say 14 working days from receipt or earlier posting evidence. Regulation 34 instead requires reimbursement without undue delay, within 14 calendar days of receipt or earlier supplied dispatch evidence where collection was not offered; otherwise, within 14 days of cancellation notice. Keep and supply proof; chase after 14 calendar days from supplying it.

Cancellation refunds include basic outbound delivery; premium delivery is capped at standard cost. Refunds use the original payment means unless expressly agreed otherwise. Excess handling can reduce the refund; normal shop-style inspection is permitted.

Regulation 28 excludes personalised and rapidly perishable goods; relevant sealed hygiene goods and media lose cancellation rights once unsealed. Matalan’s policy and terms word exclusions more broadly, even referring to DVDs with seals intact. Ask Customer Services to assess the legal conditions rather than accepting a category-wide refusal; these differ from voluntary restrictions.

Returns Policy Matalan Shoppers Get Wrong: 5 Costly Mistakes

Matalan return costs and eligibility depend on choosing the right route:

  • Paying avoidable postage or choosing the wrong destination: eligible store returns are free; listed brands and large items need other routes.
  • Creating an Evri return too early: drop off printed-label parcels within seven days; a print-in-store QR expires seven days after it is generated. If you miss either limit, check the portal or ask Customer Services before posting.
  • Recycling paperwork: losing delivery notes or enclosed supplier labels removes documents needed for the return.
  • Relying on undated Christmas dates: with no 2026 notice published as of 28 October 2026, the standard window remains the safe planning basis.
  • Expecting gift-card cash: cards themselves are non-refundable; refunds for goods bought with them follow card-payment rules.

Exact portal prices, the postal cutoff action and the Christmas notice’s year remain unpublished. See how we check retailer policies.

FAQ

Can I return Matalan swimwear or underwear?

Matalan’s voluntary restrictions apply after wear, opening or packaging damage; underwear is not subject to an unconditional ban. Swimwear specifically needs its hygiene strips and tags intact. Keep everything in original condition and check the supplier route, because faulty goods and named beauty suppliers have separate rules.

Does a Matalan Me card give me longer to return?

No. Matalan Me terms apply the normal returns and exchange policies to card purchases; membership adds no published return extension. Use 28 days from the store purchase date or from the day an online order arrives, subject to product exceptions. A membership card also has no published purchase-lookup guarantee for replacing missing proof.

Can I get a refund on a Matalan sale item?

Matalan publishes no separate sale-item exchange-only or no-refund rule in the current policy and FAQ. The standard policy applies, including condition, proof and route requirements. Sale goods also retain statutory rights under GOV.UK guidance, so a discount does not remove remedies for qualifying faults.

Will Matalan refund my original delivery charge?

For statutory online cancellation, Matalan refunds standard outbound delivery; premium delivery is capped at the standard amount. Faulty or misdescribed goods qualify for applicable delivery charges and reasonable return costs. Outbound delivery reimbursement for ordinary partial or late voluntary returns is unpublished: ask about your specific order before assuming reimbursement.

What happens if Matalan rejects my return as not resaleable?

Matalan may refuse a non-resaleable change-of-mind return and send it back at your expense; the amount is unpublished. Ask for the reason and cost before proceeding. The Matalan returns policy’s voluntary condition rules do not replace statutory remedies when the problem is a qualifying fault.
