American Eagle Return Policy: 60 Days, Fees and Holiday Dates

The current US return policy American Eagle publishes refunds unworn, unwashed items bought directly from AE, online or in stores, to the original payment within 60 days of purchase (plus seven days online), then gives merchandise credit. Store returns are free; mail returns carry a fee unless exempt. Holiday purchases from October 23 can be returned through February 1, 2027.

Key facts

  • Window: AE’s current policy gives 60 days from purchase for a refund, plus seven days online; merchandise credit follows, with no maximum age published.
  • Holiday: Purchases on or after October 23 qualify through February 1, 2027, or 60 days from purchase, whichever is later.
  • Cost: Stores are free. Mail costs $5 on the policy page; the shipping table says it varies. Member and item exemptions have conditions.
  • Condition: Unworn, unwashed and undamaged; swimwear and underwear liners must remain. Final Sale items are excluded.
  • Mail refund: Allow 2–4 weeks for receipt and issuance, then 5–7 business days for bank posting.

This guide covers purchases made directly from American Eagle in the US, online or at AE, Aerie, Offline and AE Factory stores; purchases through third-party apps follow that app’s policy. Some older official AE wording still uses a 30-day refund window, so confirm your order’s refund option as explained below. For other retailers, browse our US return-policy guides.

How Long Do You Have to Return to American Eagle?

AE’s current policy says 60 days from purchase for a refund, seven additional days for online orders, and merchandise credit beyond 60 days. Check older official wording before relying on that refund window.

Why do some pages still say 30 days?

AE’s current main policy and FAQ say 60-day refunds, but older AE wording, found in an earlier indexed copy of the policy page and in text stored in the returns portal, uses 30 days for refunds, credit within 60 days, plus seven online days. The pages word it differently, and AE gives no effective date and does not say whether the older wording still applies to any order. Return within 30 days where possible if you want money back; between days 31 and 60, confirm original-payment reimbursement before sending or handing over the item. Your order’s portal options, the store counter or customer service at 1-888-232-4535 can confirm the outcome.

What happens after 60 days?

AE’s current FAQ offers merchandise credit beyond 60 days, without publishing a maximum age. Condition, proof and AE’s fraud-or-abuse restriction still apply. Ask the store before bringing an older item.

Counting the days and meeting the deadline

AE does not define calendar/business days, purchase-day counting, cutoff time or time zone. Nor does AE say whether starting, labeling, mailing, a carrier scan or receipt meets an ordinary deadline. Start and drop off well before the window ends.

AE’s main policy uses purchase-based timing plus seven online days. If the portal offers to let you send the parcel yourself and its instructions require receipt within 60 days of delivery, send it early enough to meet both that and the purchase-based window. An online order must be fully shipped before a return can start, so split shipments can delay initiation.

American Eagle Holiday Returns for 2026–27

AE’s Extended Holiday Return Policy allows online and store purchases made on or after October 23 to be returned through February 1, 2027, or 60 days from purchase, whichever is later. Bring original proof or a gift receipt; returns outside that timeframe receive merchandise credit.

The notice prints neither the year beside October 23 nor a purchase end date. AE also does not explain whether seven online days extend February 1, or which mailing event meets that date. Do not add seven days; aim to mail in January, well ahead of February 1. Ask AE where a gift-receipt refund goes, because that destination is not published.

Example: Assume an unworn jacket bought on ae.com on November 20, 2026, qualifies under the notice and you have proof. Sixty days falls in January 2027, making February 1, 2027, the later date; start and drop off well beforehand. Late-season purchases can have a 60-day window extending beyond February 1, and AE says the later date applies.

App purchases still follow that app’s rules. Buying gifts at other mall brands too? Check Pacsun’s return terms separately.

Do You Need Tags to Return to American Eagle?

AE’s current FAQ says tags are not required, but merchandise must be unworn, unwashed and undamaged. Text stored in AE’s returns portal instead asks for all labels and tags to be attached, and AE does not say which wording governs. Keep tags attached if available; if removed, preserve the required condition and use a store to settle eligibility face to face. The associate or your order’s portal instructions provide the order-specific answer.

Swimwear and underwear must retain their hygienic liners; removing one prevents an ordinary return. AE does not publish universal product-box, accessory or opened-package requirements beyond these rules, so keep packaging and ask before discarding it. Items damaged on arrival follow a separate route, covered below.

Does American Eagle Charge for Returns?

Eligible returns are free at AE, Aerie, Offline and AE Factory stores. For mail, the return policy lists $5, while the shipping table says charges vary with size and weight. Check your order’s portal summary before confirming; a store avoids the mail fee.

AE does not publish whether $5 applies per item, order or parcel, or how repeat returns are charged. AE’s pages do not list an applicable restocking fee or establish a general original-shipping refund rule. Remote-territory services and mixed parcels containing fee-exempt items are also unspecified; ask customer service before budgeting a refund or combining returns.

Who gets free mail returns?

AE’s main policy lists Level 3 members, credit cardmembers, Aerie bras, bralettes, swimsuits and third-party footwear. Its other official pages add qualifications:

Exemption Where AE lists it Qualification
Real Rewards Level 3 Policy and shipping table Shipping table requires a $25 minimum
Real Rewards credit cardmembers Policy and rewards terms/FAQ Pay with that card; mobile-wallet purchases may not qualify
Aerie bras and bralettes Policy; shipping table lists bras Shipping table excludes clearance from starred free rows
Swimsuits / Swim Policy and shipping table Clearance exclusion in shipping table
Third-party footwear Policy and shipping table Clearance exclusion in shipping table
Apartment Shipping table only Undefined category; clearance exclusion applies

The shipping table, Real Rewards terms and rewards FAQ qualify the broader policy wording. Expect a fee unless your order’s portal summary shows $0; ask support if unclear.

If mailing costs influence where you buy jeans, Hollister’s return rules explain that brand’s mail charge.

How to Return an American Eagle Order

AE supports store and portal-based mail returns, depending on purchase channel. Bring proof and check eligibility; Contact Us/live chat or 1-888-232-4535 can resolve a missing option.

At an AE, Aerie, Offline or AE Factory store

  1. Find an AE-family store in the country of purchase.
  2. Bring eligible items and a receipt, invoice, order email or order-history page. Online-only items can go back to a store.
  3. Request an eligible original-payment refund, exchange or AEO Merchandise return card, and confirm the outcome before completing the return.

Ordinary store purchases must use this route.

By mail through AE’s returns portal

  1. Wait until the full order has shipped and payment authorization is complete.
  2. Open Start a Return, the official Narvar destination AE links from its policy.
  3. Enter the order number and email the portal asks for, plus any other detail it requests, then follow the prompts.
  4. Check the fee and refund destination, then print the label or obtain a digital label for USPS to scan.
  5. Pack items and the packing slip in an original or new bag or box. Remove old addresses and barcodes; attach the printed label if using one.
  6. Drop off at USPS and keep the receipt and tracking until the refund is resolved.

Extra carriers, pickups and self-paid methods are not published for your order; use offered options. Channel exceptions below govern mail eligibility.

Store purchases, shipped-home orders and Same Day Delivery

AE’s channel-specific FAQ distinguishes these purchases:

Purchase type Where it can go back Refund form
Ordinary store purchase Store only; not online Eligible store refund or credit options
Ordered in store, shipped home, paid cash/debit AE/Aerie store or online Refund in store; merchandise credit online
Same Day Delivery via DoorDash AE, Aerie or Offline store, or online Eligible selected option; Dasher tip not refundable

Orders placed through third-party apps

AE directs app purchases back through the application used, under that party’s return/refund rules. AE publishes no app list or seller matrix; check your seller and app help. Third-party-brand shoes bought directly from AE are a different category, as is AE’s DoorDash delivery service.

Can You Return to American Eagle Without a Receipt?

Yes, if you have another listed proof: AE accepts an order email or order-history page as the receipt for eligible original-payment refunds. Without any proof, AE’s general policy offers a different-size exchange, while Afterpay payment help says an AE Gift Card is offered without a receipt. For an Afterpay purchase, bring the order email/history and ask the store or support to confirm which outcome applies.

AE publishes no card, phone, ID or membership-account lookup, or current/lowest-price credit without proof. Points activity does not establish purchase retrieval; find the email before going.

AE describes original-payment refunds but publishes no original-card requirement or workaround, so ask the store or support before returning without the payment card. Gift-card-paid refund mechanics, including whether a new card is emailed, are also unpublished; confirm the destination before choosing credit.

When Will You Get Your American Eagle Refund?

For mailed returns, AE says to allow 2–4 weeks to receive items and issue the refund, followed by 5–7 business days for bank availability. Keep the return window, retailer stage and bank stage separate:

Stage Store return Mail return
Return window Current page: 60 days; +7 for online purchases; holiday rule above Same current-policy window; mailing deadline event not published
AE receives and issues Not published 2–4 weeks for receipt and refund issuance
Bank posting Not published 5–7 business days after issue, depending on bank

AE publishes no warehouse-only processing time; the weeks include transit. Ask support about delays; arrival does not start a new 2–4-week guarantee.

Merchandise-credit e-gift card details are emailed after receipt. Physical AEO Merchandise return cards buy merchandise and cannot be cashed out.

Instant Credit: an early gift card with a strict mail-back

AE’s policy describes Instant Credit as an AEO e-gift card emailed when you start a return. To use it, sign in to your Real Rewards account when you start the return, activate the e-gift card through the link in its email, and mail the items with the label from your return confirmation. Handing the items in at a store does not process an Instant Credit return, although spending the credit is a separate matter. The linked terms require mailing within 14 days of receiving the credit email; their FAQs instead count from submission/confirmation or issuance. Mail within 14 days of submitting the return to follow the earlier reading, and check the credit email and portal confirmation.

The terms warn of a charge for the credit amount if AE does not receive the items within 30 days, without separately defining that clock’s start. The card does not expire, ordinarily cannot be cashed out or applied to the AE credit card, and cannot be switched to another refund method. A universal fee waiver is unpublished; check the offer’s fee.

AE’s policy says Real Rewards members can use Instant Credit, but the terms retain pilot limits: accounts over 60 days old, purchases within 60 days, discretionary approval, a $200 maximum refund and tier/payment conditions. Text stored in the portal mentions both 60- and 90-day order ages. Do not plan around eligibility; your order’s portal offer decides availability. Read its terms before committing.

How do Afterpay and Klarna refunds work?

Afterpay purchases go back to AE in store or by mail, not to Afterpay. AE’s payment help says showing the Afterpay card at the store checkout notifies Afterpay; refunds reflect payments already made. Choosing an e-gift card leaves biweekly payments due, so do not stop paying because AE issued credit.

Klarna shoppers should follow AE’s return steps, retain tracking and report the return in their Klarna account to pause the statement. AE’s processing leads to an adjusted invoice. Follow the provider’s payment status rather than applying ordinary bank-posting estimates to installments.

Real Rewards points after a return

Real Rewards terms remove earned points for returns and lower-value exchanges; a previously issued reward can leave a negative balance. AE publishes no longer window by tier; confirm before relying on membership.

How Do Exchanges Work at American Eagle?

AE handles exchanges in stores only: equal or lesser value with proof, or a different size without proof under the general rule. Mail exchanges are not accepted; place a new order and return the unwanted item separately.

AE publishes no separate exchange deadline, higher-value process, price protection or stock reservation. Check stock, price and shipping before reordering; replacement terms are not guaranteed. Final Sale items are excluded.

Sale, Final Sale and Other Exceptions

Items marked Final Sale cannot be returned or exchanged. Other sale and clearance purchases can be returned with proof for the amount paid, under AE’s normal rules. Clearance returnability does not mean free postage; check the clearance qualifications in the fees section.

Returns must occur in the country of purchase, and AE can refuse suspected fraud or abuse. AE’s US pages do not establish universal bans on customized items, gift cards, opened underwear beyond liner rules, pierced jewelry, beauty products or .97 price endings. Ask AE about the specific item instead of assuming permission or a ban.

What if your American Eagle order arrives damaged?

AE’s FAQ accepts items damaged when received and directs questions to customer-service live chat. Contact chat promptly and retain packaging and delivery details: AE does not publish a separate reporting deadline, photo requirement, automatic fee waiver, original-shipping refund or guaranteed replacement.

For faulty-product problems, FTC warranty guidance says contact the seller first; a warranty remedy may involve repair before a refund. The FTC Cooling-Off Rule does not cover online purchases or ordinary store sales, so it supplies no extra return window here.

Return Policy: American Eagle Mistakes That Cost You Money

AE’s windows, fees and credit options affect what you receive:

  • Assuming 30 or 60 days always controls: Do not abandon a possible refund after day 30, or rely on day 60 without checking; confirm the portal/store’s refund option.
  • Removing a hygienic liner: An otherwise unworn swimsuit or underwear item fails ordinary eligibility; leave the liner in place.
  • Expecting free clearance or small Level 3 returns: The shipping table adds exclusions and a $25 minimum; confirm $0 before mailing.
  • Stopping Afterpay payments after gift-card credit: Installments remain due; follow the payment plan.
  • Missing Instant Credit’s mail-back: Late/nonreceived goods risk a charge; mail within 14 days of submission and retain tracking.
  • Mailing an exchange: AE requires a separate new order; check its stock and cost before returning.

Where AE’s official pages word a rule differently, confirm how it applies to your order. This guide cannot see the options AE’s portal shows for a specific order; the portal, a store or customer service gives the binding answer. Read how we verify these rules.

FAQ

Can I return an Aerie item to an American Eagle store?

Yes. AE’s policy supports cross-brand returns at AE, Aerie, Offline and AE Factory stores, including eligible online-only items. Bring proof and meet the normal window and condition rules. Returns must be made in the country of purchase; third-party-app orders follow the app instead.

Will American Eagle refund the tip on a Same Day Delivery order?

No. AE’s Same Day Delivery return guidance says the Dasher tip is not refundable. Eligible merchandise can go to an AE, Aerie or Offline store, or back online. That tip rule does not establish whether ordinary original delivery charges are refundable; AE does not publish a general US rule.

Can I return something I bought through a third-party app at an AE store?

AE directs purchases made through third-party applications back through the app used, under that party’s return and refund rules. AE does not publish an app list or a general store-return route for those purchases. Check the app’s order/help page; third-party-brand shoes bought directly from AE are different.

Does returning an item affect my Real Rewards points?

Yes. Real Rewards terms remove points earned on returned merchandise and lower-value exchanges. If a reward has already been issued, the balance can become negative. Member benefits do not establish a longer return window by tier, so check the ordinary or holiday deadline separately from your points balance.

Does American Eagle charge a restocking fee?

AE’s return pages do not list an applicable restocking fee; that does not guarantee one can never apply. The policy lists a $5 mail-return fee, with conflicting variable charges in the shipping table, and does not publish its per-item/order/parcel basis. Eligible store returns are free; confirm mail charges in the portal.
