AutoZone Return Policy: 90-Day Rule, Cores, Warranties and Refunds

The AutoZone return policy allows US store returns within 90 days of purchase in original condition and packaging, with the receipt, including online orders returned to stores. Used or installed parts may be refused; customized goods and gift cards are final sale. Defective parts follow product-specific warranties.

Key facts

  • Store returns have a 90-day purchase-date window, including AutoZone.com orders returned to stores.
  • Bring the receipt and original packaging, drain fluids from parts, and be ready to show photo ID.
  • Lost receipt: call 1-800-288-6966, 8 a.m.–5 p.m. Central, Monday–Friday, for transaction details.
  • Refunds are issued when AutoZone processes the return; cards take an estimated 3–5 business days to post.
  • Defective parts, batteries, cores and Loan-A-Tool deposits follow separate rules.

This guide covers US AutoZone stores and AutoZone.com purchases, alongside our other US store return guides. AutoZone.com’s seller is AutoZone.com, Inc., an AutoZone, Inc. subsidiary; no separate marketplace-seller policy is published in its FAQ.

How Long Do You Have to Return Something to AutoZone?

AutoZone gives 90 days from the purchase date to bring an eligible item back to a store. The Store Return Policy requires the return itself within that period, rather than simply contacting support.

AutoZone doesn’t specify calendar versus business days, inclusive counting, a cutoff time or a separate buy-online-pickup start event. Return several days early instead of calculating an exact final date.

Does the 90-day clock apply to online orders?

Yes, AutoZone.com orders returned to a store follow the 90-day purchase-date rule. For mailed returns, AutoZone publishes no separate window, starting event or rule establishing whether dispatch or arrival meets a deadline.

Use a store if possible. Otherwise, call Customer Care before mailing and keep tracking; don’t assume shipment or delivery starts the clock. Certain vendor-shipped special orders cannot be canceled, but the FAQ says received orders may be returned under the Online Return Policy.

Does AutoZone extend returns for the 2026 holidays?

AutoZone has no published 2026 holiday extension in the reviewed terms and FAQ. No eligible purchase range or seasonal deadline is available. Use the ordinary purchase-date store rule for gifts, and recheck the official policy before holiday shopping.

What Condition Does an AutoZone Return Need to Be In?

AutoZone requires original condition, original packaging and the receipt, subject to its missing-receipt support process. Under the return terms, refunds for used or installed items may be denied: refusal is discretionary, and acceptance isn’t promised.

AutoZone publishes no universal opened-but-unused standard, sealed-box requirement or separate accessories checklist. Keep everything that came in the box and avoid installing a part merely to check fit; drain fluids before returning it. Loan-A-Tool permits use under its separate deposit rules below.

AutoZone can limit returns and exchanges even with a receipt. If you also buy tools and garage supplies at Home Depot, see how Home Depot handles returns.

Returning to AutoZone Without a Receipt

AutoZone’s documented route is to call 1-800-288-6966 for transaction details and instructions for returning to a nearby store. The receipt FAQ lists Customer Care hours as 8 a.m.–5 p.m. Central, Monday–Friday.

Have your purchase date and payment card ready to help explain the transaction. AutoZone doesn’t publish gift-receipt terms, guaranteed register lookup by card, Rewards or phone number, or a store-credit outcome or valuation if the purchase cannot be verified. A payment card alone isn’t a promised substitute for the receipt.

Why AutoZone may ask for photo ID

AutoZone may require valid government-issued photo ID for any return, including one with a receipt, and may retain ID information in its company-wide return-activity database. Its accepted-ID list includes:

  • US or Canadian driver’s licenses.
  • US state or Canadian provincial IDs.
  • US military ID.
  • Mexican voter registration card.
  • Passport.
  • US Laser Visa.

Photo ID does not replace proof of purchase or make an otherwise ineligible item returnable.

What AutoZone Won’t Take Back

AutoZone names customized goods and gift cards as final sale in its terms. Used parts and some vendor-shipped orders have narrower rules:

Item AutoZone’s rule What you can do instead
Customized goods Final sale Check customization before buying
Gift cards bought online or in store Final sale Don’t plan on returning the card
Used or installed parts Refund may be denied Check warranty coverage if defective
Certain vendor-shipped special orders Cannot be canceled; received orders may be returned Follow the Online Return Policy after receipt

AutoZone doesn’t publish blanket bans on opened electrical parts, all special orders, software, opened fluids, sale or clearance items, or batteries as a category. Items AutoZone doesn’t list still have to meet the condition rules above.

How to Return to AutoZone

AutoZone returns go to a store or back by mail with the shipping invoice’s Return Form; delivery orders and AutoZone shipping errors have their own routes.

Returning at an AutoZone store

AutoZone’s store-return instructions require the receipt and original packaging.

  1. Drain fluids from the part and put it in the original box.
  2. Bring the receipt, original payment card if available, and photo ID.
  3. Use the AutoZone store locator; online orders can go to any store.
  4. Request the return for reimbursement to the original payment method.

Mailing back an AutoZone.com order

AutoZone’s mail instructions use the shipping invoice, rather than a published universal return portal.

  1. Complete the Return Form in Section B of the shipping invoice.
  2. Drain fluids before packing the item with the form in its original box.
  3. Follow the carrier’s requirements and the return instructions for shipment to the AutoZone Fulfillment Center; use tracking.

You pay ordinary return postage; the refund covers the product price and excludes shipping. If the invoice or routing instructions are missing, contact AutoZone. Confirm your mailing deadline with Customer Care before shipping; don’t guess an address or assume a prepaid label.

Same-day and next-day delivery returns

AutoZone allows same-day and next-day delivery returns to a local store, subject to eligibility. Bring the receipt and original packaging, with fluids drained. If no store is nearby, call 1-800-288-6966 for instructions and/or a label under the delivery-return terms. Check postage arrangements with Customer Care when requesting the label.

Wrong part or shipping damage: who pays postage?

AutoZone pays return freight when AutoZone made the shipping error, including sending the wrong part, shipping damage or a defect present when shipped. Under the error-return procedure, enter the return-reason code on the invoice form and call Customer Care before mailing.

US-origin qualifying returns receive a prepaid label. For qualifying returns from a US territory or overseas, AutoZone describes reimbursement by check based on the carrier’s preprinted label, which you enclose. That procedure doesn’t establish general international return eligibility.

AutoZone doesn’t separately promise reimbursement of the original delivery charge or publish an additional numerical reporting deadline. Call as soon as the wrong or damaged package arrives.

Can you exchange a part instead of getting a refund?

AutoZone doesn’t publish an ordinary exchange process, separate window or price-difference rule, and reserves the right to limit exchanges. Ask the store, or return an eligible item and buy the correct part. A warranty replacement for a defective part is a separate process, covered below.

When Will You Get Your AutoZone Refund?

AutoZone issues refunds to the original payment method on the day it processes the return. Credit and debit card refunds then take an estimated 3–5 business days to post, according to its refund information.

Stage What AutoZone says Time
1. Return window Bring eligible merchandise to a store 90 days from purchase; mail window: Not published
2. AutoZone processing Refund issued on processing day Handover/warehouse-arrival-to-processing duration: Not published
3. Card posting Credit/debit card Estimated 3–5 business days
3. PayPal posting PayPal account Estimated 24–48 hours
3. Rewards posting Rewards Up to 24 hours
3. Digital wallet posting Digital wallet Up to 7–10 business days

Weekends, holidays and your bank or provider can add time. AutoZone doesn’t publish cash-purchase timing, gift-card-paid or split-tender allocation, or closed/lost-card account treatment. Ask Customer Care about those situations rather than treating posting estimates as an end-to-end guarantee.

AutoZone recommends bringing the original credit card for online-to-store returns. Without it, or after paying through PayPal or another digital method, present the receipt and product for reimbursement to the account under the Online Return Policy. Cash or reimbursement to a different card isn’t promised.

How returns affect AutoZone Rewards

AutoZone automatically deducts credits and/or Rewards when a return drops a qualifying purchase below the qualifying spend threshold: currently $20 after exclusions. Core and Loan-A-Tool deposits don’t count toward that threshold under the Rewards terms.

Example: Assume a $30 purchase earned one credit and all $30 was qualifying spend. Returning a $15 eligible item leaves $15, below $20, triggering the credit-deduction rule.

Ask Customer Care how a refund affects any Rewards you redeemed on the purchase.

AutoZone Core Returns and Core Deposits

AutoZone refunds a core deposit separately from ordinary merchandise, and reimbursement depends on the core passing inspection. AutoZone’s FAQ describes a core as the old or failed part removed during a repair, which is then remanufactured. The deposit refund is for returning that old part, not the new part you bought. Its Core Return Policy publishes no general core deadline; don’t import the ordinary 90-day window. Ask Customer Care when your core must be returned.

Method Requirements Refund Postage
Store Receipt, original box, drained fluids Qualifying core value after inspection; original card recommended, otherwise receipt-based account reimbursement No mailing needed; store-fee schedule: Not published
Mail Original box, drained fluids, Section B Return Form, return label; receipt copy if you no longer have the original credit card or used another payment method; follow carrier rules Qualifying core value after inspection; receipt supports account reimbursement Not reimbursed

What happens to a core that fails inspection?

AutoZone’s core policy words this differently in two places. The core-policy introduction says returned cores transfer ownership to AutoZone and cannot be returned to the shopper; the store-core subsection says a failed-inspection core will be handed back. The mail subsection promises no payment on rejection, without promising the core back.

If recovering a rejected core matters, take it to a store and ask before handover whether it will be returned after failed inspection. The binding answer for your core comes from the store at handover or from Customer Care at 1-800-288-6966. Don’t mail a core you can’t afford to lose.

Defective Parts and Warranty Claims After 90 Days

AutoZone’s warranty length depends on the part and is printed on the receipt. After 90 days, a defective part must qualify under that warranty; the general Limited Warranty provides replacement or refund for a covered failure within the stated period.

Store and online purchases use the national warranty database, allowing claims at any AutoZone store. A replacement part is covered for the remaining original term or 90 days, whichever is longer. The general warranty ends when you sell the vehicle; batteries have separate terms.

AutoZone battery warranty periods by line

AutoZone provides free replacement for a covered defective battery within its receipt-stated free-replacement period, at any store. The battery warranty table lists:

Battery line Free-replacement period
Duralast Platinum Elite 60 months
Duralast Platinum AGM 48 months
Duralast Platinum EFB 36 months
Duralast Gold 36 months
Duralast 24 months
TotalPro 12 months
Econocraft 90 days

This covers AutoZone’s main automotive battery lines; other batteries are listed in the full official table.

Confirm the product against your receipt. Later prorated credit applies only if the receipt states a further warranty period: remaining warranty months ÷ total warranty months × original price. The result is credit toward a new battery, not cash; don’t assume every current line has a later credit period.

Battery coverage excludes improper installation, other faulty parts, low fluid, abuse, off-road use, stationary power-unit use and non-marine batteries used in marine applications. It ends on vehicle sale or transfer. Compare Tractor Supply’s return and warranty terms if you’re pricing batteries at more than one retailer.

What the general warranty does not cover

AutoZone’s general Limited Warranty excludes damage from:

  • Misuse or abuse.
  • Other faulty parts or improper installation.
  • Off-road, commercial or marine use.

Returning a Loan-A-Tool Deposit

AutoZone’s Loan-A-Tool program refunds the full deposit when the designated tool is returned undamaged within 90 days. Use is expected. Online loans can be mailed with the return form or taken to any AutoZone store; keeping the tool converts the deposit into a purchase.

AutoZone doesn’t specify the day-count convention, so return early. An ordinary purchased tool follows the merchandise policy, where use may cause refusal. If you’re comparing borrowing with buying, check Harbor Freight’s return rules for tool purchases before choosing.

AutoZone Return Policy Mistakes to Avoid

  • Installing before confirming fit: used or installed parts may be refused.
  • Confusing clocks: 90-day returns and receipt-stated warranties are separate.
  • Expecting free ordinary mail returns: you pay postage, and shipping is excluded from the refund.
  • Mailing a core you want back: inspection can fail, and recovery isn’t promised for mailed cores.
  • Ignoring Rewards deductions: a partial return can push qualifying spend below $20.

The AutoZone return policy leaves condition decisions subject to its discretion, even with a receipt. This guide covers published terms; read how we check each policy for the evidence approach. Ask Customer Care about anything the terms don’t cover.

FAQ

Does AutoZone charge a restocking fee?

AutoZone’s return pages don’t publish a general restocking or return fee. You pay postage for an ordinary mailed return, with no shipping reimbursement. AutoZone pays return freight for its own shipping errors, including a wrong part or shipping damage; call Customer Care to arrange that return.

Can I get cash back for a debit card purchase?

AutoZone generally refunds the original payment method and doesn’t publish a cash option for PIN-debit purchases. Its estimated credit/debit card posting time is 3–5 business days after processing. If your account is closed or your card is lost, ask Customer Care how to handle the refund before returning the item.

Can I cancel an AutoZone.com order instead of returning it?

Usually, yes. AutoZone’s FAQ allows cancellation before shipment: call 1-800-288-6966 with your order number. Same Day Shipping orders and certain vendor-shipped special orders can’t be canceled, though received orders can still be returned. For store pickup, call Customer Care or your chosen store in advance.

Do AutoZone Rewards members get a longer return window?

AutoZone doesn’t publish a longer return window or special fee benefit for Rewards members. Membership doesn’t replace the ordinary eligibility rules. Returns can also cause credits or Rewards to be deducted when qualifying spend falls below $20; detailed restoration rules for previously redeemed Rewards aren’t published.

Can I return an AutoZone.com order to any store?

Yes. Online purchases can go to any AutoZone store within 90 days of purchase, with the receipt, original packaging and fluids drained. The AutoZone return policy recommends bringing the original credit card you paid with online; without it, present your receipt for reimbursement to that payment account.
