Home Depot Return Policy: Windows, No-Receipt Rules and Refunds
The Home Depot return policy gives most US purchases 90 days with proof of purchase. Shorter category windows apply, while eligible credit-account purchases get 365 days; without proof, store credit at the lowest advertised price may be available with ID and verification approval.
Key facts
- Most merchandise has a 90-day return window from purchase.
- Listed categories have 30-day, 7-day or 48-hour windows.
- Qualifying Home Depot credit-account payments extend eligible purchases to 365 days.
- No-proof store credit requires government photo ID and verification approval.
- Special Order returns may carry a 15% restocking fee.
Home Depot return windows at a glance
| Category or purchase | Window | Condition |
|---|---|---|
| Most merchandise | 90 days from purchase | Proof of purchase; generally unused and like-new |
| Eligible named credit-account purchases | 365 days from purchase | Shorter category windows and exclusions still apply |
| Furniture and listed equipment/electronics | 30 days | Unused, factory-sealed in original packaging |
| Halloween and holiday decor | 30 days | Unused, with proof; effective July 7, 2026 |
| Listed climate equipment and gas generators | 7 days | Unused, factory-sealed; whole-house/stationary generators excluded |
| Pumps, portable evaporation products and portable heaters | 7 days | Unused, with proof; effective July 7, 2026 |
| Major appliances | 48 hours from delivery or Service Desk pickup | Report damage/defects immediately; reporting wording excludes weekends |
| Most plants | 90 days | Perennials, trees, roses and shrubs have a one-year guarantee; store credit after 90 days |

These categories come from Home Depot’s return policy; identify the product group before relying on the standard window.
How Long Is the Home Depot Return Window?
Home Depot gives most items 90 days from the original purchase date, according to its store-help return guidance. The online policy does not specify a delivery-based start for ordinary shipped purchases; do not assume delivery restarts the clock.
Home Depot does not define calendar-versus-business-day counting for these windows. Return a few days early.
Which products have 30-day or 7-day windows?
Home Depot gives the listed products below 30 or 7 days, with unused, factory-sealed original packaging required for the established groups. Its dated July amendments separately require unused condition and proof of purchase.
- 30 days: furniture, tractors, framing/roofing compressors, TVs, computers and paint sprayers; gas-powered trimmers, blowers, chain saws, mowers, outdoor augers, tillers, chippers and log splitters.
- 7 days: dehumidifiers, gas pressure washers, window/portable air conditioners and gas generators other than whole-house or stationary models.
- Effective July 7, 2026: Halloween and holiday decor has 30 days; pumps, portable evaporation products and portable heaters have 7 days.
The category wording does not put every power tool in a shorter group. For products described as “portable evaporation,” confirm the specific item with Home Depot rather than guessing the category boundary.
Does a Home Depot credit card extend returns?
Home Depot extends eligible purchases to 365 days from purchase when paid with its Consumer Credit Card, Pro Xtra Credit Card (Commercial Revolving Charge), or Commercial Account. The 365-day rule preserves the 48-hour, 7-day, 30-day and other exceptions.
Example: Assume unused, factory-sealed furniture was paid for with a Home Depot Consumer Credit Card. Furniture still has 30 days, because the category exception survives the payment benefit.
Pro Xtra membership alone is not a stated basis for extending returns in the policy text reviewed. Payment eligibility and proof of purchase are separate checks; a missing paper receipt may still be recoverable.
Can You Return to Home Depot Without a Receipt?
Home Depot may accept a return without a paper receipt through transaction lookup, or may offer discretionary store credit when no valid proof can be found. Neither route guarantees acceptance.
First, try purchase lookup. Home Depot’s receipt help lists a physical payment card, the original mobile-wallet device, a Pro Xtra number recorded at checkout, an order number beginning C/H/W, or a Purchase History barcode. An eReceipt works like a paper receipt, and a shipping-confirmation email is another supported proof option.
Home Depot’s refund page gives lookup periods of 90 days for credit/debit/check purchases and 365 days for named Home Depot credit accounts; its receipt-help page instead describes up to 24 months for receipt reconstruction/reprints. The pages word this differently, and receipt retrieval does not extend return eligibility. Bring the original card or payment device, act within the item’s return window, and ask the Service Desk to confirm lookup availability for your purchase.
Unlinked cash purchases generally cannot be reconstructed. A cash purchase linked to Pro Xtra at checkout may be retrievable through Purchase History.
If no valid proof is available, the in-store exceptions allow possible store credit at the lowest advertised price, with a driver’s license or government photo ID and verification approval. Home Depot publishes no dollar cap, annual frequency limit or advertised-price lookback period. That absence does not guarantee approval; all returns remain subject to its third-party verification system.
What do you need to bring?
Home Depot’s store-return instructions call for proof, the purchasing credit card and valid ID. Prepare these items before visiting:
- Receipt, eReceipt or shipping-confirmation email, if available.
- Original payment card, or the exact phone/device used for a mobile-wallet payment.
- Pro Xtra checkout number, order number or Purchase History barcode for lookup.
- Government photo ID, required for no-proof and Store Credit purchase returns.
- All product components, needed for a full refund on shipped purchases.
Mobile-wallet lookup may require the device-specific account number or its last four digits. Bringing a physical card alone may not identify that payment. Lowe’s is stricter here: it publishes no store-credit option when a purchase can’t be found (see the Lowe’s return policy guide).
Major appliances follow a much shorter clock.
Home Depot Major Appliance Returns: The 48-Hour Rule
Home Depot gives major appliances 48 hours from delivery or Service Desk pickup, including refrigerators, washers, dryers, ranges, dishwashers and over-the-range/built-in microwaves. Its appliance policy says damage or defects must be reported within 48 hours, excluding weekends, but separately says all appliance returns—even unopened, unused and factory-sealed units—must be made within 48 hours.
Inspect before accepting delivery or taking the appliance home. Tell the driver about damage and refuse an unwanted damaged unit. After acceptance or pickup, call 1-800-455-3869 or text Support to 38698 immediately.
The reporting and return-completion wording differ. Home Depot does not clarify weekend treatment for the all-returns sentence or guarantee later collection after timely reporting. Act within 48 hours, request order-specific instructions from Customer Solutions, and confirm how collection affects eligibility. Do not calculate an extra weekend allowance yourself.
Home Depot’s appliance FAQ says PIN-debit, cash, check, Store Credit, Gift Card and Pro Xtra Dollars payments require bringing the receipt to a store for refund processing. Its refund policy separately confirms this step for appliances bought in store with a debit card. Online major appliances cannot be returned to a store: taking the receipt for processing is separate from moving the appliance. Arrange collection with Customer Solutions.
Missed delivery: Home Depot cancels the order and returns the units if delivery is not accepted within 30 days of arrival at the delivery facility, according to its missed-delivery rule. This clock starts before acceptance; the 48-hour rule above applies after delivery or pickup. Other purchases have the methods below.
How to Return a Home Depot Order
Home Depot offers store returns for eligible purchases, mail returns for eligible online orders, and reviewed pickup arrangements for large items. Check the official return instructions against the product, payment method and purchase channel first.
Returning in store
Home Depot’s ordinary store-return route is free, subject to category and location exceptions.
- Check the item’s window and gather proof, payment card/device, ID and all components.
- Use the Home Depot store locator to choose an eligible location. Special Orders go to the original purchase store.
- Present the purchase for verification and confirm the refund destination.
Design Center purchases can return only to a Design Center; ordinary-store and homedepot.com purchases cannot return there. Check the location before traveling.
Returning an online order by mail
Home Depot’s mail process applies to eligible online orders; general permission to mail ordinary store purchases is not published.
- Open account Order Details/Order History, or use Return Items and guest order lookup, to check available return options.
- Print the emailed return label and attach it to the parcel containing all components.
- Take the labeled parcel to a UPS Access Point. If no eligible option appears, use Home Depot customer support.
Confirm label issuance before carrier drop-off. Home Depot does not say whether label creation, dispatch, carrier scan or warehouse receipt meets the deadline; start early and confirm the order’s cutoff with support.
Items using flammable liquids or gases cannot be mailed, even after draining. Use a store for an otherwise eligible return. e-Store Credit orders require an in-store return. In-store purchases paid with Gift Card, Store Credit or e-Store Credit must also return in store.
Large and heavy item pickup
Home Depot reviews pickup eligibility rather than promising collection for every large item.
- For an online purchase, call 1-800-430-3376; for a store purchase, contact the purchase store.
- After approval, mark every package/pallet with the return form or handwritten “RETURN,” your name and order number.
- Use original packaging or wrap, band and palletize as instructed; make the return accessible.
Confirm packaging and access requirements. Pickup eligibility does not establish that collection is free; charges need a separate check.
Home Depot Return Fees and Shipping Costs
Home Depot says Special Order returns or cancellations may incur a 15% restocking fee and must go through the original purchase store. Its refund policy does not publish the calculation base, tax treatment or full exemptions; check the agreement or Service Desk.
| Charge | Published rule | Action |
|---|---|---|
| Ordinary store-return method | Free for eligible purchases | Check item-specific fees and exceptions |
| Special Order restocking | May be 15% | Confirm fee base and applicability |
| Parcel label/return freight | Cost and payer not published | Confirm before sending; reimbursement of independently bought postage is not promised |
| Large-item pickup | Cost not published | Ask during eligibility review |
| Original shipping | Refunded for Home Depot error, with possible Express Delivery/major-appliance exceptions | Request review; no universal buyer-remorse refund is stated |
Example: Assume Home Depot confirms an $800 Special Order fee base and applies 15%. The fee would be $120; this does not establish the final refund after tax, shipping or other adjustments.
The Special Order fee is separate from pickup costs and original shipping. Confirm deductions before comparing the expected refund with the processing timelines.
When Will You Get Your Home Depot Refund?
Home Depot processes in-store refunds instantly; ordinary mail-back parcels can take up to 7 business days after receipt and verification, followed by card posting of up to 10 business days. The refund tables give different guidance for large-item pickups, appliances and other payment types.
For appliances, complete the payment-specific receipt step described above as well as arranging collection. The refund policy confirms that in-store debit-card appliance purchases require taking the receipt to a store.
Keep three clocks separate: the item’s return window, Home Depot’s processing after receipt, and payment-provider posting after processing. Carrier transit is outside the processing clock.
| Return method | Home Depot processing guidance |
|---|---|
| In store | Instant |
| Mail-back parcel | Up to 7 business days after receipt/verification |
| Large-item pickup | Up to 21 business days |
| Major appliance | Up to 12 business days |
Home Depot presents these as processing guidance; extra time can apply. An instant store refund does not promise instant card funds.
| Payment or refund type | Posting or dispatch guidance after processing |
|---|---|
| Credit/debit card | Up to 10 business days |
| Prepaid debit | Up to 30 business days |
| PayPal | Up to 30 business days; possibly longer depending on issuer |
| Store/e-Store/Pro Trade Credit; Gift Card refund as Store Credit | Up to 24 hours |
| Cash | Instant, unless a check exception applies |
| Mailed check from an in-store refund | Up to 14 business days to dispatch; transit separate |
| Deposited check | 2–8 business days to post |
Returns with valid proof generally refund the original payment method. Gift Card and Store Credit purchases instead refund as Store Credit; e-Store Credit purchases may refund as e-Store Credit or a Gift Card to the original email. Refunds over $2,000 involving these credits are split across multiple Store Credits, and ID registration may be required.
Cash or cash-equivalent purchases over $1,000 may receive a corporate mailed check. Holidays and special events can add time; distinguish dispatch from arrival. For a defective product, the exchange or warranty route may differ from an ordinary refund.
Exchanges and Defective Items
Home Depot allows defective store-stock products, without abuse, to be swapped in store for the same stock item within that product’s return period. The refund policy does not establish general mail exchanges or guarantee change-of-mind swaps.
For online live goods received dead or damaged, Home Depot promises a refund when you contact support within 3 days of delivery; cut flowers/floral arrangements are excluded. For other damaged/incomplete deliveries or replacement-part needs, contact Home Depot within 30 days of delivery for resolution. Use the shorter appliance or live-goods procedure where applicable; the general damaged-order route does not promise an immediate replacement or refund choice.
Warranty remedies remain separate from voluntary return windows. The FTC’s warranty guidance explains why the actual warranty matters, including possible repair before refund. The FTC Cooling-Off Rule does not add a general three-day cancellation right to ordinary store or entirely online purchases. Check exclusions before treating a defect claim as a standard return.
What Home Depot Won’t Accept
Home Depot’s non-returnable/non-refundable list includes:
- Gift cards and store credits themselves.
- Whole-house/stationary generators and utility trailers.
- Cut flowers, floral arrangements and product samples.
- Tinted paint.
- Labor, delivery and installation services, subject to the separate shipping-error rules.
- Custom/made-to-order goods and specifically tailored Design Center products, with the source difference below.
Home Depot’s main return policy lists custom/made-to-order goods without a defective-item qualifier, while About Our Stores says most custom-made products cannot be returned or exchanged unless defective. The pages word this differently. Treat ordinary custom purchases as excluded; for a defective custom item, contact Home Depot’s original purchase store with your agreement and ask the Special Services Desk to confirm the remedy for your order. Acceptance is not guaranteed.
Custom thresholds were expressly added to the exclusion effective August 3, 2026. These voluntary-policy exclusions do not erase separate warranty or legal remedies; custom coverings and selected plants have specific programs below.
Custom blinds and the Guarantee to Fit
Home Depot custom window coverings have no ordinary return right, but Guarantee to Fit permits same-product size or mount remakes within 15 calendar days of package receipt, limited to four remakes per household lifetime. Stock products are excluded. The custom-covering instructions give 1-800-921-2119; online cancellation is unavailable. A remake program is different from a refund.
Plants and the one-year guarantee
Home Depot gives most plants 90 days; perennials, trees, roses and shrubs have a one-year guarantee, with Store Credit after 90 days. Its plant rules promise a refund for online live goods arriving dead or damaged when reported within three days; cut flowers/floral arrangements are excluded. Do not use the one-year guarantee as a reason to delay that three-day report.
Holiday decor and 2026 holiday returns
Home Depot gives unused Halloween and holiday decor 30 days with proof of purchase, effective July 7, 2026. No verified 2026 holiday-extension purchase range or fixed deadline was published in the official sources checked October 27, 2026. Later announcements remain possible; check the current policy rather than applying prior-year dates. The mistakes below come up most often.
Home Depot Return Policy Mistakes That Cost Shoppers
The Home Depot return policy requires checking the category, proof and method together. Avoid these assumptions:
- Every credit-account purchase gets 365 days. Shorter categories remain shorter.
- A reprinted receipt creates a longer window. Receipt availability and eligibility are separate.
- A label created on the last day protects a mailed return. The deadline action is unpublished.
- Drained fuel-powered equipment can go by mail. The mailing prohibition still applies.
- Instant processing means instant card funds. Provider posting follows retailer processing.
This guide cannot see your order-specific terms. Home Depot also says it may test policies in selected locations and change terms; locations, test terms and duration are not published. Confirm uncertain eligibility through your order or support (see how StoreReturners checks policies). Our US return-policy guides provide retailer-specific comparisons; the questions below address gifts, rewards and other remaining situations.
FAQ
Can I return a Home Depot gift?
Home Depot permits eligible gift returns in store for Store Credit, according to its gift-return guidance. The item must still qualify under its category window and conditions. Do not expect cash or assume the refund will be a gift card with the same uses as the original payment.
Do Pro Xtra Dollars come back as cash?
Home Depot refunds eligible purchases made with Pro Xtra Dollars as Store Credit, according to its Pro Xtra terms. The purchase remains subject to the ordinary return policy, including shorter category windows. Paying with a reward does not create a cash-refund entitlement or extend the item’s return period.
Can I return opened paint or used items?
Home Depot lists tinted paint as non-returnable, and general store help requires unused, like-new condition. The policy does not promise acceptance of used items or give a universal opened-packaging rule for ordinary merchandise. Listed 30-day and 7-day groups have specific factory-seal requirements; ask about your exact product before traveling.
Does a return affect my Pro Xtra tier?
Home Depot deducts returns from qualifying spending; current-period tiers stay, while next-period tiers reflect spending. Under its Pro Xtra terms, if a return drops spending below an already selected or delivered Perk’s threshold, the next Perk target rises by the return amount excluding taxes and delivery charges. The member may keep that Perk.
Can I return a third-party seller item to a store?
Home Depot’s accessible current general sources do not establish a universal store-return route, window or fee for third-party seller purchases. Check the seller and return instructions in your order, then use Home Depot support for clarification. Do not automatically apply direct-retail rules merely because Home Depot shipped the item.
