Lowe’s Return Policy: Deadlines, Receipts and Refunds Explained

Lowe’s return policy in the United States gives most new, unused items 90 days from purchase with valid proof. Exceptions include 30-day categories and a 48-hour appliance rule; eligible Lowe’s credit purchases can receive 365 days, subject to exclusions. Check the item category before relying on the standard window.

Key facts

  • Most new, unused Lowe’s merchandise has a 90-day return window from purchase.
  • Major-appliance returns should be initiated within 48 hours; Lowe’s summary and detailed rules use different starting events.
  • Eligible Lowe’s credit products can extend returns to 365 days; Lowe’s Pay does not qualify.
  • Lowe’s requires valid purchase proof; card, phone or MyLowe’s lookup may recover it, but failed lookup has no published store-credit fallback.
  • Account-credit refunds can take up to seven business days after the return is complete.

How long do you have to return something to Lowe’s?

Lowe’s allows 90 days from the original purchase date for most new, unused merchandise with valid proof. Trees, shrubs and perennials have a separate one-year replacement/refund guarantee with a receipt; other plants have 30 days.

Lowe’s does not define day-one counting or end-of-day cutoffs for merchandise windows. Return a few days early rather than calculating an exact final date from an assumed counting method.

Which items have a 30-day window?

Lowe’s lists these 30-day categories:

  • Custom-measured Special Order blinds and other window treatments.
  • Liquid paint; TVs and electronics; HVAC systems; water heaters.
  • Annuals, Bonnie Plants, house plants and patio plants.
  • Augers, chippers, cultivators, edgers, lawn mowers and leaf blowers.
  • Log splitters, shredders, snow blowers, subcompact tractors and attachments, tillers, trimmers and attachments.

CRAFTSMAN-branded battery and electric outdoor power equipment instead has 90 days. Do not apply that exception to every CRAFTSMAN product or every power tool.

Does a Lowe’s credit card extend the return window?

Yes. Lowe’s detailed policy gives 365 days from purchase, subject to exceptions, for payment with Lowe’s Commercial Account, MyLowe’s Pro Rewards Credit, MyLowe’s Pro Rewards American Express Card, MyLowe’s Rewards Credit Card or Lowe’s Business Rewards.

The policy summary also names Lowe’s Business Advantage, while the detailed list names the Pro Rewards products instead. The lists differ: confirm the specific account on your receipt or with customer care rather than assuming the names are interchangeable.

Lowe’s Pay financing does not receive the credit extension. Free MyLowe’s Rewards or MyLowe’s Pro Rewards membership alone has no published longer window. For the 48-hour categories, the separate credit exception is generally 30 days, not 365.

What if you’re past the return window?

Check whether an expressly longer category or eligible-credit window applies. Otherwise, Lowe’s publishes no general late-return grace period or manager-override entitlement. For defects, use the warranty or Service Advantage route described below; those remedies do not extend merchandise-return eligibility.

Major Appliances and the 48-Hour Rule

Lowe’s major-appliance rule requires prompt action, but the opening policy summary counts 48 hours from purchase, while the expanded rule requires initiating within 48 hours of delivery or pickup. Act within 48 hours of purchase or delivery/pickup, whichever comes first, and ask customer care to confirm your order’s deadline.

The 48-hour group includes:

  • Refrigerators, freezers, washers, dryers, ranges, range hoods, dishwashers, over-the-range microwaves, cooktops, wall ovens and washer/dryer pedestals.
  • Portable/window air conditioners, evaporative coolers, construction heat and parts, paint sprayers and tile saws.
  • Utility vehicles, golf carts, go-karts and motorized bikes.
  • Gas-powered portable generators, pressure washers, chainsaws and pole saws.

Lowe’s states a 30-day delivery/pickup exception for original, unopened, undamaged factory-sealed packaging, or unused items sold without packaging. Another 30-day exception covers the credit products named above, plus Lowe’s Preload Plus Mastercard and Lowe’s Lease-to-Own.

Gas-powered portable generators, pressure washers, chainsaws and pole saws are excluded from the credit extension. Lowe’s does not clearly explain whether the separate packaging exception covers that equipment; confirm before relying on 30 days.

What to do in the first 48 hours:

  1. Inspect the item and identify any damage, missing parts or reason for return.
  2. Contact Lowe’s at 1-800-445-6937 promptly to initiate the return and confirm the applicable clock.
  3. Ask whether the item qualifies for pickup or must go to a store; keep the response and order details.

Preserve packaging if seeking the sealed-box exception, and have purchase proof ready before requesting a return.

Can You Return to Lowe’s Without a Receipt?

Lowe’s can accept a return without the paper receipt only if valid purchase proof can be recovered or supplied. The proof-of-purchase rule says returns and exchanges without valid proof are not accepted.

Ask Lowe’s to attempt lookup using:

  • The payment card or digital wallet used to buy the item.
  • The purchase phone number or order number.
  • Your MyLowe’s Rewards or MyLowe’s Pro Rewards account.
  • An electronic receipt or the return barcode in Order Details.

Refund verification may require photo ID, such as a driver’s license, state ID or military ID. ID alone is not a substitute for purchase proof.

Failed lookup does not have a published store-credit fallback. Home Depot handles this differently: it may issue store credit with photo ID when no purchase record is found (see the Home Depot return policy guide). Lowe’s gift-return answer calls for the original receipt and the applicable window; once proof is available, choose the correct return route.

How to Return a Lowe’s Purchase

Lowe’s accepts eligible store and online purchases at US retail stores, subject to the restrictions below. Eligible Lowes.com purchases may also qualify for mail-back through Order History.

In store

  1. Check the category deadline and gather your receipt, lookup details or Order Details barcode.
  2. Use the Lowe’s store locator to select a permitted location; check original-store restrictions first.
  3. Bring the merchandise and proof to customer service. Have photo ID available if verification requires it.

Online purchase by mail

  1. Open Order History and start the return before shipping anything.
  2. Follow the order’s instructions. Mail-back is supported if Lowe’s provides a FedEx label; otherwise use a store.
  3. Follow the supplied packing and carrier instructions, keeping the shipment record.

Lowe’s does not publish whether initiation, dispatch, postmark, carrier scan or warehouse arrival satisfies an ordinary mail deadline. Start early and ask customer care about a return approaching its cutoff. The public portal does not establish your item’s eligibility or exact deadline without order details.

Large items: bring the item to a store or call 1-800-445-6937 to discuss pickup eligibility through Lowe’s customer service. Pickup is conditional, and no universal fee schedule is published.

Lowes.com Marketplace and delivery-app orders

Lowe’s treats a seller purchase on Lowes.com differently from an order placed through an external delivery app.

Purchase channel Where to return Refund form
Lowes.com, sold/shipped by a third-party seller Use a Lowe’s retail store under Marketplace terms; confirm any proposed mail route first Lowe’s handles refunds; tender rules apply
Instacart, DoorDash, Shipt or Uber Lowe’s order Store only, with proof; normally 90 days subject to exceptions Item price and associated tax as in-store credit

The returns policy says Lowes.com sellers follow the same guidelines as Lowe’s merchandise, alongside general online mail guidance. The Marketplace terms instead require a retail-location return. Use the store route unless Lowe’s confirms otherwise for your order. Those terms also exclude Marketplace goods from offers/programs, so confirm credit-window extensions rather than assuming eligibility.

Store restrictions

Lowe’s regular-store merchandise cannot go to an Outlet. Specified vehicles must return to a store in the original purchase state with original paperwork, including title when applicable. PRO quote purchases are store-only; configured Special Orders must return to the purchase store. Check these location restrictions before arranging transport or assessing fees.

Does Lowe’s Charge Fees on Returns?

Lowe’s charges 20% for configured Special Order products returned or canceled after 72 hours from purchase. The configured-product rule is narrower than a fee on every Special Order; see also Special Orders help.

Charge Trigger Amount or treatment
Configured Special Order restocking Return/cancellation more than 72 hours after purchase 20%; taxed in select states
Original shipping/delivery Return of an order with those charges Nonrefundable unless due to Lowe’s error
Labor/installation Services charged on the order Listed as nonrefundable
Return label/postage or pickup Applicable return method Universal price and payer not published; APO/FPO addresses are not eligible for no-charge pickup

The restocking rule includes installed sales unless the installation contract or Right to Cancel provides otherwise. Lowe’s does not specify the fee calculation base, allocation or rounding.

Example: assume a configured order is returned on day five, Lowe’s uses $500 as the fee base, and no contract exception applies. Then $500 × 20% = $100 before any applicable fee tax. That calculation is not a guaranteed refund deduction.

Lowe’s Refunds: Where the Money Goes and How Long It Takes

Lowe’s normally refunds valid-proof returns to the original payment method. The refund guidance allows up to seven business days after completion for account credit, depending on the financial institution.

Clock Published timing What it means
Return eligibility Applicable 48-hour, 30-day, 90-day or extended window Time to act under the item’s return rule
Lowe’s inspection/processing Not published No stated request-to-completion or warehouse turnaround
Financial-institution posting Up to seven business days after return completion Not seven business days from parcel drop-off
Pay by Bank posting Most refunds: three to five business days after Lowe’s issues the refund, depending on the bank Separate post-issuance guidance, not request-to-issuance processing

Lowe’s does not define completion or publish an end-to-end refund promise.

Payment method Refund destination or condition
Card Normally original payment method
Gift card, refund card, merchandise card or store credit In-store credit
Cash Refunds above $1,000 may be mailed by check at Lowe’s discretion
Check Within three days of purchase: store credit; afterward: cash or credit subject to verification; no refund with an outstanding unpaid check
Lowe’s Pay Financing institution manages the refund; no cash or store credit
Pay by Bank Typically original bank account for canceled/changed orders, per Lowe’s Help
MyLowe’s Money — personal MyLowe’s Rewards Policy says digital Wallet; personal-account terms also allow merchandise-credit cards at Lowe’s discretion
MyLowe’s Money — Pro Rewards Pro terms provide discretionary account/Wallet reinstatement; no equivalent merchandise-credit-card option is stated

For cash/check scheduled-delivery purchases canceled or returned by phone or Lowes.com, Lowe’s emails a cash-redeemable voucher within 24 hours of processing to the purchase email. Store redemption requires matching photo ID; qualifying amounts above $1,000 may be mailed by check at Lowe’s discretion.

For personal MyLowe’s Money, the returns page promises Wallet credit, while personal-account terms also permit merchandise-credit cards. Confirm the destination with Lowe’s. Both personal and Pro mixed payments refund the other method first; expired-reward replacement is conditional. Returns reduce qualifying spend and points, potentially leaving a negative balance.

Exchanges at Lowe’s

Lowe’s directs shoppers to bring the existing item and replacement item to the customer service desk, with proof and within the applicable window. The exchange instructions do not specify direct postal exchanges, stock reservations, price-difference handling or exchange fees. Check eligibility before choosing a replacement from an excluded category.

Items Lowe’s Won’t Take Back

Lowe’s nonrefundable list and restrictions include:

  • Safety masks/facial coverings, highway trailers, whole-house generators, as-is goods, paint samples and trading cards.
  • Gift cards, including other-retailer, Visa and Mastercard gift cards; refund cards, merchandise cards and in-store credits themselves. Separately, lost or stolen Lowe’s gift cards can be replaced for their remaining balance with the original receipt.
  • Used items that may have contacted bodily fluids or waste, regardless of current condition.
  • MyLowe’s Pro Exclusive Rewards, which cannot be returned or canceled to restore points.
  • Outlet purchases, except the narrow appliance-defect route below.
  • Christmas/Halloween merchandise after its holiday. For 2026, return Halloween items by October 31, 2026, and Christmas items by December 25, 2026, subject to other eligibility rules. Purchases after the relevant holiday are final sale.

Outlet’s exception requires a nonfunctional major appliance with qualifying mechanical/electrical damage or defect to be returned within 48 hours after possession, with proof, to the same Outlet. Cosmetic damage, insufficient size and damage after purchase/delivery do not qualify.

Lowe’s does not publish a blanket final-sale rule for all clearance or customized products; use the actual designation and category.

Is there a 2026 holiday return extension?

No official 2026 extension was found in Lowe’s policy, help or terms as of October 27, 2026. No verified purchase-date range or January deadline is available. The Christmas/Halloween restriction is a category cutoff, not a gift-return extension.

Damaged or Defective Lowe’s Items

Lowe’s directs arrival damage, missing items, delivery errors and replacement-part requests to 1-800-445-6937. For defective-item assistance, Service Advantage is 1-888-775-6937; warranty-covered repairs have no cost, while uncovered repairs may be at your expense.

Appliance defect and parts service

For appliance defects, Lowe’s Help directs purchases less than 12 months old to the manufacturer. For purchases more than 12 months old, use the protection-plan claim route or call Service Advantage for service. Help leaves the exactly-12-month boundary unclear; ask Lowe’s which route applies.

For appliance or outdoor-equipment parts, Help directs deliveries within the past seven days to the local store and purchases within the last 12 months to the manufacturer. These are service routes, not extra return windows. Lowe’s publishes no universal extra damage-reporting window or automatic refund entitlement beyond category rules. The Kobalt guarantee directs qualifying defects to the purchase location for repair/replacement; packaging and manuals determine conditions and duration. Do not assume every Kobalt product has lifetime or receipt-free coverage.

The FTC Cooling-Off Rule covers certain off-premises sales, not an automatic three-day cancellation right for ordinary store or entirely online purchases. Warranty remedies and state-law rights are separate from voluntary returns.

This guide cannot see order-specific deadlines or resolve conflicting account terms (see how StoreReturners checks policies). Check Order Details and your receipt, and ask Lowe’s to confirm discrepancies. Keep receipts, warranty terms and communication records.

Lowe’s Return Policy: Common Mistakes to Avoid

Lowe’s return policy depends on the item, proof and payment method. Avoid these assumptions:

  • Lowe’s Pay means a year to return: financing does not qualify for credit-card extensions.
  • Mailing fuel-powered equipment without checking: follow the order’s own label instructions; Lowe’s publishes no general rule on mailing hazardous items.
  • An appliance has 90 days: initiate promptly under the 48-hour rule and confirm any exception.
  • No receipt means automatic store credit: Lowe’s must validate purchase proof.
  • Seven business days starts at drop-off: the account-credit clock starts after return completion.

For another store’s deadlines, use the relevant US retailer return guide; the answers below address remaining Lowe’s situations.

FAQ

Can I return an opened item to Lowe’s?

Lowe’s standard rule covers new, unused merchandise, but Lowe’s does not publish a universal opened-but-unused acceptance rule. Opening packaging also removes the sealed-box condition needed for one 30-day exception to the 48-hour rule. Ask Lowe’s about your specific item before assuming an opened box is eligible.

Can I return a gift without the receipt?

Lowe’s gift-return guidance calls for the original receipt within the applicable return window. Lowe’s may attempt purchase lookup, but acceptance still requires valid proof. The policy does not specify separate gift-receipt treatment or guarantee that the buyer will not be notified, so request clarification before relying on either.

What happens to my refund on a BOGO deal?

Lowe’s allocates a buy-one-get-one discount proportionately across the items, then refunds the returned item’s discounted allocation. Example: assume two equally priced $30 items cost $30 together, with no other discounts or taxes. Each receives a $15 allocation, so returning one produces a $15 merchandise refund.

Can I return something bought at another state’s Lowe’s?

Lowe’s generally allows eligible purchases back at US retail stores, subject to proof and category windows. Utility vehicles, golf carts, go-karts and motorized bikes must return in the original purchase state with original paperwork. Configured Special Orders require the purchase store, and Outlet goods have separate location restrictions.

Do returns reduce my MyLowe’s points?

Yes. Lowe’s deducts qualifying spend and points for returned eligible purchases, and the points balance can become negative if rewards have already been issued. Pro qualifying returns also reduce spend and points. Returning an item does not guarantee reinstatement of expired rewards or restore points spent on nonreturnable Pro Exclusive Rewards.
