Macy’s Return Policy: 30 Days, Mail Fees and Holiday 2026 Dates

Macy’s return policy gives most items sold by Macy’s, in US stores or online, 30 days; marketplace orders go back to the seller. Store returns are free; eligible mail returns are free for Star Rewards members, while nonmembers have $9.99 plus tax deducted. Holiday 2026: most purchases from October 5–December 31, 2026 are returnable until January 31, 2027.

Key facts

  • Most items have 30 days; count from purchase because Macy’s pages word the start differently.
  • Stores: free, no curbside. Eligible Star Rewards mail returns, including Bronze: free; nonmembers: $9.99 plus tax. Voluntary returns don’t refund original delivery.
  • Receipt lookup is available; without proof, possible credit uses the previous 180 days’ lowest price.
  • Mail exchanges mean a refund and a new order at the current price.
  • The holiday extension excludes Last Act and items sold by Dyson or Mac Duggal.

How Long Do You Have to Return Something to Macy’s?

30 days for most merchandise. Macy’s pages word the start differently: the main return policy says delivery or purchase; the Free Returns page says purchase. Count from the purchase (order) date. The eligibility shown for your order in Purchase History or the Easy Returns portal is the binding answer.

Macy’s doesn’t say whether days are calendar or business days, or whether a mailed return must be shipped or received by the deadline. Return a few days early and keep the UPS receipt. Comparing department-store windows before you buy? See JCPenney’s return windows and receipt rules.

Which Macy’s items have a different return window?

Macy’s category exceptions:

  • Jewelry and watches: 30 days from delivery, price tags attached; inspection precedes refunds.
  • Burberry: 14 days from purchase at Herald Square; Louis Vuitton: 30 with receipt; Longchamp: 30, Herald Square only.
  • Toys“R”Us and Finish Line: 30 days from delivery.
  • ReBag and Lids: 30 days from delivery, mailed to vendor; LensCrafters: 30 from dispense date.
  • DoorDash tech accessories: 14 days; the category’s start event isn’t separately published.
  • Scheduled furniture: contact within 3 days of delivery; mattresses: one return within 120 days of delivery.
  • Online rugs and lighting: contact within 30 days of delivery.

Do Star Rewards or Red Carpet members get longer?

Star Rewards members get no extra time, though eligible mail returns are free; only eligible Red Carpet members get longer, 90 days. Star Rewards includes free Bronze membership without a Macy’s card, alongside Silver, Gold and Platinum.

Red Carpet terms give eligible members 90 days from purchase or delivery during their own 12-month enrollment period. Excluded: more-restrictive departments, furniture, mattresses, rugs, jewelry trunk shows, marketplace sellers and leased departments. Beyond 30 days, mail returns require the concierge at 877-736-2297; store returns require a participating location and membership ID.

New Red Carpet enrollment is closed. Macy’s doesn’t publish whether a given membership is still active, so check your enrollment dates.

Macy’s Holiday Return Policy 2026

October 5–December 31, 2026 purchases generally qualify until January 31, 2027, under Macy’s 2026 holiday notice. Last Act stays final sale. Items sold by Dyson and Mac Duggal remain returnable up to 30 days from purchase.

Channel rules, nonmember fees and nonrefundable original shipping continue. DoorDash has the same holiday dates. Buying gifts at more than one department store? Compare Kohl’s 2026 holiday return dates before you shop.

Example: Assume an eligible sweater bought on macys.com on October 20, 2026 is sold by Macy’s. The January 31, 2027 holiday deadline replaces 30 days. The mail cutoff event isn’t defined: drop it at UPS well beforehand.

What Macy’s holiday notice leaves open

Macy’s notice doesn’t say whether mailing or receipt meets January 31, or give a “later of” rule for longer registry or Red Carpet windows. Treat January 31, 2027 as the safe date and ask Macy’s about your order.

Full holiday seller, designer, furniture, mattress and specialty coverage isn’t published. The main policy says eligible jewelry and watches, Backstage and Finish Line purchases “may qualify.” Keep specialist and condition rules unless Macy’s confirms otherwise.

Can You Return Worn, Used or Opened Items to Macy’s?

Generally no for worn clothing or used goods. Macy’s condition requirements exclude worn, washed, altered, damaged or incomplete merchandise. Its main policy also excludes mismatched sets. Keep tags and applicable packaging.

  • Shoes need their original undamaged box; try them indoors to avoid scuffs.
  • Swimwear and lingerie need protective liners intact.
  • Cosmetics and fragrance may be new or gently used if they don’t meet your needs, within the applicable window.

Under promotion rules, return the free promotional gift with the qualifying item: otherwise Macy’s may deny the return or deduct its value. BOGO refunds use proportionally discounted prices.

Macy’s Returns Without a Receipt

Macy’s returns without a receipt are often possible through purchase lookup. If Macy’s finds the purchase, it counts as a return with proof; if not, the credit rule below applies.

How can Macy’s find your purchase without a receipt?

Macy’s supports four lookup routes:

  1. The credit card used for the purchase.
  2. Order number or email confirmation.
  3. Packing slip or shipping label.
  4. Registry number.

Lookup isn’t guaranteed; success supports original-payment refunds, subject to exceptions below.

What do you get if Macy’s can’t find it?

Macy’s says no-proof returns may receive credit at the lowest selling price in the previous 180 days. Full-price credit isn’t guaranteed. Macy’s general help doesn’t say photo ID is required. Backstage no-receipt credit works differently; see the Backstage section below.

Returning gifts and registry items

Gift returns receive store credit using a registry number or gift receipt. The longer registry window requires a receipt.

Registry timing differs: the dedicated registry policy gives pre-event purchases 90 days after the event and post-event purchases 90 days from purchase; registry shopping help says most gifts have 90 days from purchase. Count from purchase for safety; confirm with the gift receipt or registry help.

How to Return to Macy’s

Items sold by Macy’s follow the Macy’s return policy and go back either to a store or by mail. Marketplace, DoorDash, vendor-brand and furniture purchases have their own routes below, and Macy’s help center can answer order-specific questions.

Returning to a Macy’s store

Store purchases return in store; ordinary online orders can too. Macy’s instructions:

  1. Find a Macy’s store, confirming specialist restrictions.
  2. Bring the item, tags, receipt or lookup details, and the credit card used for the purchase. Check condition.
  3. Go inside; curbside returns aren’t accepted.
  4. Collect refund or credit confirmation; usually processed immediately.

Returning a macys.com order by mail

For eligible online orders, Macy’s Easy Returns portal says:

  1. Sign in or look up a guest order number; use the gift option if applicable. Complete email or phone verification.
  2. Select return items.
  3. Print the confirmation or return slip and labels.
  4. Pack with the slip inside, one label per box. Keep items assigned different labels separate.
  5. Hand the parcel to a UPS Access Point; keep its receipt or tracking number.

Reprint labels via Purchase History. Macy’s public instructions assume a printed label; QR-code, printer-free or box-free options aren’t published.

Does Macy’s charge for mail returns?

Nonmembers have $9.99 plus applicable tax deducted for ordinary mail returns; eligible Star Rewards member mail returns are free under free-return terms. Specialist exclusions apply.

Route Cost Original shipping refunded? Note
Ordinary store return Free No Eligible online purchases too
Eligible member mail return Free No Bronze included
Ordinary nonmember mail return $9.99 plus tax No Deducted from refund
Free-return exclusions Varies; amounts not published No Listed below
Furniture, mattresses, rugs See specialist section No Separate fees

Exclusions include lamps, wall art and mirrors, furniture, accessories and beds, mattresses, rugs, gift cards, food, gourmet gifts, Beauty Boxes and international orders. Shipping exclusions aren’t final-sale rules.

The $9.99 unit—item, order, label, box or request—and general scheduled-pickup charge aren’t published. Eligible store returns avoid this uncertainty. Retroactive Star Rewards eligibility isn’t published: join before initiating; don’t assume coverage.

When Will You Get Your Macy’s Refund?

Store refunds are usually processed immediately; Macy’s says mail returns are processed within 7 days or 10 business days of receipt, depending on the page. Macy’s refund help says credit and debit card refunds can take another 5–7 business days to post, and for mail returns it notes your bank may need extra time. Macy’s pages word mail processing differently: return instructions say typically within 7 days of receipt; refund help says within 10 business days. Allow up to 10 business days after receipt before following up; use your confirmation or customer service for order-specific status.

Stage In store By mail Marketplace seller DoorDash
Return window/deadline event Usually 30 days; start differs Usually 30 days; cutoff: Not published 30 days from delivery Usually 30 days from delivery
Retailer/provider processing Usually immediate Typically 7 days or within 10 business days after receipt Mailed: up to 10 business days for receipt and processing. Store-routed (only if the seller authorizes it): 5–10 business days transit, then up to 10 business days processing Issuance: 1–5 business days after processing
Bank/card posting 5–7 business days 5–7 business days (credit/debit); bank may need longer Not published Not published

Jewelry and watch inspection can take up to 14 business days before approval and refund. Furniture and mattress refunds follow receipt and inspection; durations aren’t published. Klarna and PayPal take 7–10 business days, without a published starting trigger. Macy’s publishes no overall total, so don’t add the stages together.

Proof: generally original payment; gifts: credit. Split-tender mail refunds use original methods first; residual credit may take 2–4 weeks. Gift cards, certificates, checks, Star Money or Macy’s Money may produce credit.

Address-related wording differs: Free Returns exclusions specify an Easy Exchange Card where shipping and billing details differ, while refund help promises original payment with proof without that exception. Expect the exchange card; check the confirmation or ask customer service before returning if a payment-card refund matters.

EZ Exchange and Happy Returns cards work online and in store. Merchandise Only Certificates are store-only, expire after two years, and can’t buy gift cards or pay credit accounts.

How Star Money and rewards change your Macy’s refund

Macy’s rewards terms separate:

  • Star Money-funded amounts may become Star Money, a Happy Returns Card or Merchandise Only Certificate.
  • Points earned on returned purchases are removed.
  • Insufficient points can reduce Star Money and ultimately the refund by $0.01 per missing point.

These deductions are separate from the $9.99 nonmember mail fee.

Can You Exchange Items at Macy’s?

Yes, in store for eligible store or online purchases, under Macy’s instructions. Mail means a refund followed by a new order at the current price. Universal exchange fees, stock reservation and price protection aren’t published; don’t assume price or availability.

Brand, seller and final-sale restrictions apply. DoorDash purchases can’t be exchanged.

Marketplace, DoorDash and Vendor-Shipped Purchases

Identify the seller: Macy’s-branded orders don’t always return through Macy’s.

Can marketplace orders return to a Macy’s store?

Use stores only when the seller authorizes it. Marketplace terms identify seller merchandise as “shipped and sold by” that seller, responsible for fulfillment and returns. Return to the seller within 30 days of delivery via Purchase History; ask questions through Order Details › Contact the Seller.

Store-handling wording differs: the main policy directs seller returns but mentions store processing; delivery help says Macy’s cannot process them; refund help describes store-to-seller forwarding. Follow seller instructions; use stores only if directed. Marketplace furniture and mattresses cannot return in store.

Seller final-sale categories: family-planning and lifestyle products; food, grocery, coffee, tea and beverages; pet food and products; live plants and botanicals; and portable power stations.

Macy’s purchases made through DoorDash

Macy’s DoorDash rules give most purchases 30 days from delivery, in store only. Start in DoorDash; bring the app barcode and any receipt. No exchanges or price adjustments.

Keep tags and original packaging; items must be unworn and unaltered, although beauty may be gently used. Tech accessories have 14 days with packaging and accessories. Food, plants, gourmet and personalized items are final sale; promotional gifts must accompany returns.

DoorDash refunds merchandise subtotal plus tax to original payment in 1–5 business days after processing. October 5–December 31, 2026 orders qualify through January 31, 2027; tech-accessory overrides aren’t published.

ReBag, Lids, LensCrafters, Toys“R”Us and Finish Line

Macy’s partner rules:

  • ReBag and Lids: 30 days from delivery; vendor mail only. ReBag requires tags, paperwork, receipt, packaging and no alterations.
  • LensCrafters: 30 days from dispense—online arrival or store purchase. Online eyewear: vendor mail.
  • Toys“R”Us: Macy’s purchases: generally 30 days from delivery, store or mail; ToysRUs.com purchases excluded.
  • Finish Line: 30 days from delivery; unworn and saleable.

Macy’s Backstage and Clearance Store Returns

Backstage returns generally have 30 days from purchase, back to Backstage, unworn and unaltered with original tags. Account-number lookup available; jewelry and watches go to the original Backstage store with packaging and tags.

No-proof credit wording differs: the main policy uses the lowest price over 90 days and says name and address may be required; the Backstage FAQ uses 180 days and requires those details. Keep receipts, bring name and address, expect reduced-price credit; confirm value with the receiving store.

Locations differ: the FAQ rejects regular Macy’s returns but allows store-within-store registers; Clearance Store help accepts Macy’s and Backstage returns despite Backstage-only wording. Use the original store type; confirm cross-channel acceptance first.

Clearance Store purchases are final sale; ordinary Macy’s discounts aren’t this channel. Comparing off-price stores? See Nordstrom Rack’s return guide.

Furniture locations differ: general return help says Furniture Gallery; the specialist policy bars store returns for UPS- or vendor-shipped furniture and specified accessories. Call 1-888-822-6229 before traveling; follow your delivery type’s specialist route, including mattresses.

How do Macy’s mattress returns work?

Mattresses qualify for one return or reselection within 120 days of delivery, in good, undamaged, unstained condition. Schedule pickup within 14 days of the request. The mattress policy charges $99 pickup and retains original delivery fees.

Most brands, including Tempur-Pedic, iComfort and Bedgear: 15% preference fee. Purple, Simba, Saatva, Goodful, Sealy2GO and Leesa: no first-return percentage fee; $99 pickup remains. Second returns may cost more.

Adjustable bases: mattress policy, then manufacturer support after delivery. Nectar’s 365-night trial is the manufacturer’s. Fee bases and caps aren’t published: request your breakdown.

What Macy’s Won’t Take Back

Macy’s final-sale exclusions:

  • Last Act merchandise.
  • Food, beverages, live plants and gourmet gifts.
  • Gift cards.
  • Altered or personalized items.
  • Special-order or resized jewelry.
  • All Clearance Store purchases.

Marketplace exclusions appear above. Free-return exclusions, including Beauty Boxes, don’t establish final sale. Older guides’ electronics rules aren’t published in current main-policy text: check before buying.

Burberry, Louis Vuitton and Longchamp returns

Macy’s designer rules:

  • Burberry: 14 days from purchase, Herald Square; original receipt, tags, hygiene seals, unused and unaltered. Personalized items and pierced earrings: final sale.
  • Louis Vuitton: 30 days from purchase; receipt required. Confirm location. Perfect condition; sealed fragrance. Personalized, made-to-order goods and engraved bottles excluded.
  • Longchamp: 30 days from purchase, Herald Square only; confirm restrictions.

What If Your Macy’s Order Arrives Damaged or Wrong?

Report ordinary online arrival problems within 30 days of delivery through Macy’s issue-reporting help, chat or 1-800-289-6229, daily 8 a.m.–10 p.m. ET. Report damage, defects, wrong items or missing parts; marketplace orders use Contact the Seller.

Furniture support at 1-888-822-6229 requires reporting scheduled-delivery damage, defects or missing or incorrect parts within 3 days of delivery. Service, repair or replacement may follow.

For ordinary faults, remedies, fee waivers, delivery refunds, evidence and later-defect deadlines aren’t published. Confirm coverage before shipping.

Separate rights: The FTC Cooling-Off Rule doesn’t cover entirely online, mail, phone or permanent-store purchases. For warranties, check written terms; contact the seller or manufacturer. FTC warranty guidance says repair may precede refund. For qualifying online credit-card billing problems, FTC guidance advises contacting the card issuer immediately and sending a written dispute that reaches the issuer within 60 days after it mailed the first bill showing the error. That isn’t a return window.

Macy’s Return Policy Mistakes to Avoid

  • Assuming Star Rewards gives 90 days: use 30 unless an exception applies; check Red Carpet.
  • Counting from delivery: count from purchase because Macy’s pages word it differently.
  • Mailing a swap expecting the old price: return, then reorder at current prices.
  • Keeping promotional gifts: return them to avoid denial or deduction.
  • Taking seller, ReBag, Lids or vendor-furniture goods to stores: confirm the route.
  • Waiting until January 31, 2027 to mail: ship early; keep tracking.

This guide can’t see your order’s eligibility, labels or fee unit. Macy’s doesn’t publish the mail deadline event or a single refund time, and several Macy’s pages word key rules differently. See how StoreReturners verifies policies.

FAQ

Can I return opened makeup or perfume to Macy’s?

Macy’s accepts new or gently used cosmetics or fragrance that don’t meet your needs within the applicable window. Louis Vuitton fragrance must remain sealed under its separate designer rule. DoorDash beauty may be gently used, but those purchases must follow DoorDash’s app-to-store return process rather than ordinary mail instructions.

Does Macy’s charge a restocking fee?

Macy’s doesn’t publish an ordinary-merchandise restocking fee or a universal no-fee promise. Furniture, accessories and most mattress brands carry 15% fees; six mattress brands have a first-return exemption. Special-order furniture forfeits a 25% deposit. Percentage bases and caps aren’t published, so request your order’s fee breakdown first.

What if I lose my Macy’s return label?

Macy’s says submitted labels can be reprinted through My Account › Purchase History. Print the return slip too, put it inside the parcel, and use one label per box. Keep items assigned different labels in separate boxes. Public instructions don’t publish universal QR-code or printer-free availability.

Can I use a Merchandise Only Certificate online?

No. Macy’s Merchandise Only Certificates work only in stores and expire after two years. They cannot buy gift cards or pay a Macy’s credit account, and purchases with them don’t earn Star Rewards. For a lost certificate, Macy’s refund help lists 1-800-511-2752; confirm replacement arrangements there.

Do Klarna or PayPal refunds take longer?

Macy’s refund help lists 7–10 business days for Klarna and PayPal refunds, without defining the starting event. That prevents a reliable comparison with the separate store-processing and bank-posting stages. Check your Klarna or PayPal account and Macy’s confirmation for status; don’t assume the money appears directly on your bank card.
