How Long Do You Have to Return Something to Old Navy?
30 days is Old Navy’s standard window: from delivery online, or purchase in store. Old Navy doesn’t define calendar versus business days, day-one counting, or whether a mailed return must be dispatched, scanned or received by the deadline. Drop a parcel at UPS or visit a store a few days early; Old Navy doesn’t say that creating a label counts as returning on time.
Does the 30 days start at purchase or delivery?
Old Navy’s Quick Facts and Encore FAQ specify delivery for online purchases. The returns FAQ also says, “Returns/exchanges with sales receipt are accepted within 30 days of purchase.” The pages word it differently. Safest action: plan online returns from the earlier order date; confirm your order’s options in the returns portal or with Customer Service. Neither wording uses shipment as the start.
How Encore Premier and All-Access extend the window
Old Navy’s Encore terms define these tiers.
| Tier | Qualification | Window | Refund after day 30 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Core | Free; no minimum qualifying spend | 30 days | No tier extension |
| Premier | $350 annual qualifying purchases | 45 days | Merchandise Return Card |
| All-Access | Gap Inc. credit Cardmember | 60 days | Merchandise Return Card |
Members must have been signed in online or supplied their membership phone number at the store purchase. Membership must remain active and in good standing; item exclusions still apply.
Shoppers comparing everyday-basics chains can also check the Uniqlo return policy guide.
Example: Assume an eligible purchase by a signed-in Premier member is returned on what Old Navy counts as day 40. The refund goes to a Merchandise Return Card, rather than the payment card.
Is there a 2026 holiday return extension?
As of October 28, 2026, Old Navy had not published a year-dated 2026 holiday return notice. Its FAQ has an undated rule: purchases October 15–December 24 can return through January 15 of the following year, or the ordinary 30 days from delivery/purchase, whichever is later. Proof is required; normal exclusions apply, and third-party-seller goods are excluded.
Conditional: If Old Navy applies this wording to the 2026 season, purchases from October 15 to December 24, 2026 can be returned through January 15, 2027, or within the normal 30 days if that ends later. Old Navy doesn’t explain Encore stacking or late holiday refund forms. Recheck the FAQ rather than adding extensions together.
What Condition Do Old Navy Returns Need to Be In?
Old Navy requires ordinary returns to be in original condition, unworn and unwashed. Items failing that requirement are not accepted under the ordinary policy. The eligibility rules don’t publish a universal tag or packaging requirement; keep tags attached, and use original mail packaging if possible.
- Swimwear: original price tags and an intact hygienic liner are required.
- New sunglasses: return within 30 days of delivery with original receipt and tags; defective sunglasses may be returned at any time. Member/holiday overrides aren’t explained for this category.
Damaged or defective items follow the separate rules in the defects section below.
Final Sale, Beauty and Other Old Navy Exceptions
Old Navy’s category rules distinguish nonreturnable items from items restricted to one method.
| Item | Old Navy’s rule | What you can do |
|---|---|---|
| Final Sale; masks | No return or exchange, store or mail | Check the final-sale label before purchase |
| Encore Market rewards items | No return, exchange or refund | Distinguish these from ordinary goods bought with points |
| “Mail only” | Return by mail only | Use the designated mail route |
| Old Navy Beauty Co | Store only; opened/used products cannot return or exchange | Keep unopened/unused; take to a store |
Price endings don’t establish final sale. Gap’s maternity and swimwear mail-only notes are Gap rules; check Old Navy’s product page, bag and invoice for its own labels. Old Navy doesn’t explain whether defect provisions override final sale or opened beauty; ask Customer Service before sending an excluded item.
Can you return an Old Navy gift card?
Unused physical gift cards can be returned free to original payment, according to Old Navy’s gift-card help. Bring the card and receipt/invoice to the appropriate brand store; only online-bought cards can return by mail. Electronic gift cards can be canceled only while their scheduled delivery date is still in the future; once that date arrives, they can’t be canceled or returned. Merchandise paid for with a gift card refunds to a new gift card (see refunds below).
Does Old Navy Charge for Returns?
Eligible store returns and exchanges are free for everyone. Old Navy’s returns instructions list $6 per mailed return package for nonmembers, deducted from the refund; members mail free. The Everyday Free Shipping page instead advertises free returns on all orders. The pages word it differently. Assume $6 per package as a nonmember, or use a free store return; confirm the applicable rule through the returns FAQ or Customer Service at 800-653-6289.
| Route | Encore member | Nonmember |
|---|---|---|
| Eligible store return/exchange | Free | Free |
| Prepaid UPS return | Free | $6/package deducted; conflict above |
| Happy Returns | Free | $6 deducted; fee unit not published |
| Self-paid Groveport shipment | Your postage cost | Your postage cost |
| Mail exchange | Free | Free |
| Eligible partnered-seller return | Free | Free |
Original shipping/handling isn’t refunded. No restocking fee or defect-postage waiver is published. Eligible same-order Gap, Old Navy, Banana Republic and Athleta items can share a package; don’t combine unrelated orders or seller returns. If you’re comparing mail-return fees across fashion chains, see the Zara return policy guide.
How to Return an Old Navy Order
Choose by purchase channel and seller. Use the online instructions, in-store instructions and store locator alongside these steps.
Return an online order to an Old Navy store
Eligible direct online purchases, including unopened/unused Beauty Co, can go to Old Navy stores. Mail-only, partnered-seller, outside-marketplace and Shopify orders are excluded.
- Find an Old Navy store using the locator.
- Take the item and shipping confirmation email or original payment card.
- Request the return.
Keep the refund confirmation until the credit posts; eligible store returns are free. Common mistake: using Gap or another Gap Inc. store, or taking a portal-completed exchange to a store. Both require a different route.
Use a Happy Returns Return Bar
Happy Returns serves eligible online items and locations when offered in the Optiturn portal.
- Select Happy Returns for the eligible return.
- Obtain the QR code.
- Bring the items and code to a participating Return Bar.
Your checkpoint is the issued QR code; no box, printed label or printer is needed. Members pay nothing; nonmembers face the stated $6 deduction, whose unit isn’t published. Common mistake: expecting an instant refund; the public instructions don’t establish that guarantee.
Mail it with a prepaid UPS label
Eligible online merchandise can use prepaid UPS.
- Generate the label and packing slip through the portal.
- Pack securely, enclose the slip and cover old tracking labels.
- Drop at UPS well before the deadline.
Keep the UPS tracking until the refund is confirmed; original packaging is preferred, not required. Members return free; nonmember instructions list $6 per package, subject to the conflict above. Common mistake: waiting until the last day, because the required mail deadline event isn’t published.
Ship it yourself to Groveport, Ohio
Eligible direct Old Navy online goods can use self-paid postage under the mail instructions.
- Generate the portal packing slip and enclose it.
- Address the package to 100 Gap Inc. Direct Gateway, Groveport, OH 43125.
- Prepay postage and retain tracking.
Check the slip and address before sealing; postage is your cost. Common mistake: sending C.O.D., which Old Navy refuses, or sending partnered-seller goods here instead of to their seller.
Return an in-store purchase
Store purchases must return to an Old Navy store; they cannot be mailed.
- Locate an Old Navy store.
- Bring the item plus receipt, Rewards phone number or purchase card.
- Request the eligible return or exchange.
Keep the confirmation until the credit posts; eligible store returns are free. Common mistake: using mail or a Return Bar. Old Navy’s instructions offer no home pickup; Customer Service at 800-653-6289 can help with routing and proof questions.
Can You Return to Old Navy Without a Receipt?
Often yes, if Old Navy can trace the purchase. Its refund rules accept a shipping confirmation email, store receipt or original credit card used; the store instructions also allow a Rewards phone-number lookup.
Old Navy doesn’t publish the outcome for an ordinary purchase that no supported lookup can trace, or whether it requires ID or limits how many returns you make. Keep the email/receipt and bring the purchase card; don’t count on the gift-return rule below for your own untraceable purchase.
Returning a gift from Old Navy
Old Navy gives a gift card for the purchase price with a gift receipt or invoice. Without either, its gift-return rule provides a merchandise certificate at the current selling price. Online gift returns require the order number from the shipping invoice/confirmation and the email address receiving the refund.
When Will You Get Your Old Navy Refund?
Old Navy refunds processed returns, then emails confirmation. Processing duration is not published; the card company can take up to 10 additional business days to post the credit, according to the return instructions.
| Clock | Published timing | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| Return window | 30 days; eligible Premier 45/All-Access 60 | Eligibility deadline; mailed deadline event not published |
| Old Navy processing | Not published | Refund issued after processing; confirmation emailed |
| Card/provider posting | Card: up to 10 additional business days; other partners: Not published | Begins after refund processing, not parcel dispatch |
The Happy Returns instructions have a “Refund at Drop Off” heading but don’t publish the conditions for instant credit. Don’t treat drop-off as a guaranteed immediate refund. Ordinary eligible refunds follow original payment; Encore extensions after day 30 use a Merchandise Return Card.
Where the money goes: cards, gift cards, PayPal and Klarna
Old Navy’s payment table specifies these destinations; taxes paid on returned items are included.
| Paid with | Refund goes to |
|---|---|
| Credit card | Same card |
| Gift card | New gift card |
| PayPal, Apple Pay, Google Pay, Klarna, Afterpay | Through partner to original payment |
| Gift card plus credit card | Gift card first, then credit card |
A partial split-payment return therefore shouldn’t be assumed to refund entirely to your credit card.
What happens to Encore points when you return?
Old Navy’s returns FAQ says spent points are restored as points within 1–2 days, not cash; a closed account receives no points credit. Its Encore terms add that money refunded is limited to the amount actually paid, earned points are deducted on return, and a negative balance blocks reward use until corrected.
How Old Navy Exchanges Work
Old Navy supports store and portal exchanges, recorded as a return plus a new purchase; mail exchanges are free. Online exchanges require the original item back within 14 days to avoid a charge. The instructions don’t define when those days start or what completion event counts; ship the original the same day you request the exchange.
Portal-completed exchanges cannot be dropped at a store. A promotional discount carries to the same style in another size/color, not a different style; stock isn’t guaranteed.
Third-Party Sellers, TikTok Shop and Other Marketplaces
Check who sold and shipped the item before applying Old Navy’s direct-purchase rules. Eligible non-final-sale partnered-seller goods return free, by mail directly to the seller through the portal, never to a Gap Inc. store or Groveport. The seller instructions direct damaged-item claims to 800-653-6289; no filing deadline is published.
Universal seller windows, refund timing and Encore extensions aren’t published; check the listing/order and seller policy. Partnered goods are excluded from the holiday rule. TikTok Shop, DoorDash and other outside-marketplace purchases return through that marketplace under its rules; Shopify orders also cannot return in store.
Damaged, Defective and Kid’s Guarantee Returns
Old Navy’s eligibility FAQ allows damaged or defective returns/exchanges “at any time.” Its Kid’s Guarantee instead sets 365 days and a store route for Girls/Boys manufacturing defects. The provisions word it differently. For kids’ clothing/shoes, act within 365 days, in store, with the original receipt or shipping email; ask Customer Service to resolve overlap before relying on a later or mail return.
Old Navy doesn’t publish a direct-purchase wrong-item procedure, damage evidence requirement/report deadline or defect-postage waiver. Contact Customer Service with your order details; Old Navy doesn’t publish a photo requirement, but having photos ready may help.
What does Old Navy’s Kid’s Guarantee cover?
Old Navy’s Kid’s Guarantee covers manufacturing defects in Girls and Boys clothing and shoe styles, with refunds within 365 days of original purchase at an Old Navy or Old Navy Outlet store. Original receipt or shipping confirmation email is required for a price-paid refund to original payment; otherwise, standard policy applies.
Old Navy’s examples of manufacturing defects include holes, rips, tears, excessive shrinkage, excessive pilling, broken stitches or nonfunctional buttons, zippers, or other closures.
Excluded: kids’ accessories including sunglasses, jewelry, hair accessories and register-lane items; misuse, accidents, stains and size changes. Seller goods follow seller policy. Baby/Toddler coverage isn’t stated; ask Customer Service before relying on it.
Example: Assume Girls jeans bought directly from Old Navy develop a manufacturing seam defect after about seven months, with the receipt kept. Take them to an Old Navy store within 365 days; a stain or outgrown size wouldn’t qualify. Parents comparing kids’ clothing return routes can also read the Kohl’s return guide.
Your rights beyond Old Navy’s policy
The FTC Cooling-Off Rule excludes entirely online, mail and phone sales and purchases negotiated at a seller’s permanent store, so it adds no three-day return window here. FTC purchase-problem guidance advises approaching the seller, keeping documentation and stating the remedy sought. That advice prepares a complaint; it doesn’t guarantee a refund.
Old Navy Return Policy Mistakes That Cost You Money
Avoid these six Old Navy return policy assumptions:
- Mailing as a nonmember without considering free eligible store returns.
- Counting from shipment, or leaving the UPS drop-off to the last day.
- Expecting an Encore return after day 30 to refund your payment card.
- Mailing a store purchase or taking a portal exchange to a store.
- Wearing/washing ordinary returns or opening Beauty Co products before returning.
- Taking partnered-seller goods to a Gap Inc. store.
This guide follows published pages; order-specific options appear only in Old Navy’s returns portal, which StoreReturners can’t see for your order. Old Navy words the fee, clock and kids’ defect provisions differently. See how StoreReturners checks policies.
FAQ
Can I return Old Navy items at Gap or Banana Republic?
No. Old Navy store returns and exchanges must go to Old Navy, rather than another Gap Inc. brand. Eligible Gap, Old Navy, Banana Republic and Athleta items from the same original order can share a mailed return package, subject to exclusions. That mailing permission doesn’t allow cross-brand store returns.
Does Old Navy refund the original shipping charge?
No. Old Navy’s online-return instructions exclude original shipping and handling from refunds. Free return shipping for an eligible member return doesn’t reverse the delivery charge paid on the original order. The published instructions also don’t establish a damaged-item exception to the original-shipping rule; ask Customer Service about that situation.
Does Old Navy charge a restocking fee?
Old Navy doesn’t list a separate restocking fee on its returns pages. That isn’t an unconditional promise that no fee can apply. Its returns pages list a nonmember mail fee of $6 per package, with conflicting free-return wording elsewhere; check your applicable route and membership before mailing.
Do I get sales tax back when I return to Old Navy?
Yes. Old Navy says refunds include the taxes originally paid on the returned item. Refund destination still follows the payment rules: merchandise bought with a gift card refunds to a new gift card, while split gift-card/credit-card purchases refund to a gift card first, then the credit card.
Can I use Happy Returns for something I bought in a store?
No. Happy Returns is offered for eligible online purchases, depending on items and location. Under the Old Navy return policy, store purchases must return to a store. Select Happy Returns in the portal for eligible online orders and bring the issued QR code with the items.
