REI Return Policy: Member Windows, Used Gear and Mail Fees
The REI return policy in the US gives members one year from purchase and nonmembers 90 days to return most eligible new purchases, including REI Outlet. Outdoor electronics have 90 days for everyone. Clean, gently used gear can qualify. Store returns are free; REI deducts $7.99 from standard mail refunds, or $21.95 for oversize parcels. REI’s returns guidance
REI key facts
- Members have one year and nonmembers 90 days for most eligible new purchases, counted from purchase, not delivery.
- Outdoor electronics have 90 days for everyone. E-bikes have 365 days for members and 90 days for nonmembers, and go back to a store.
- Clean used gear can qualify; ordinary wear, misuse and accidental damage are excluded.
- Store returns and exchanges are free. Standard mail return shipping is $7.99; oversize parcels cost $21.95, unless the applicable “Shipment issue” waiver applies.
- In-store Re/Supply is final sale; online used gear has 30 days. Memberships, lift tickets, passes and gift cards are nonreturnable.
This guide covers purchases directly from REI online, in stores, by phone or mail, including Outlet; third-party seller rules are outside its scope. Browse more US store return guides for other retailers.

How Long Is the REI Return Window?
REI allows one year for members and 90 days for nonmembers on most eligible new purchases, starting at purchase. REI’s outside-window help uses purchase date, so waiting for delivery does not restart the clock.
The return pages we checked do not say whether REI counts calendar or business days, whether the purchase day counts, or what cutoff time applies. Those pages also do not settle whether a mailed return must be started, dropped off, postmarked or received before the deadline. Start the return and drop it off well before the window ends; ask REI about a borderline date.
For sporting-goods comparisons, see the Dick’s Sporting Goods return policy guide. At REI, check the product exception before relying on the member year.
Which items have a 90-day limit even for members?
REI gives outdoor electronics 90 days for members and nonmembers. The electronics help lists activity monitors, GPS devices, bike trainers, emergency-communication devices and cameras.
E-bikes have a separate 365-day member window. REI’s e-bike return help gives nonmembers 90 days and says bikes must be returned to an REI store, not by mail.
Does joining REI after you buy extend your window?
The return pages we checked do not say whether joining after purchase extends a nonmember purchase’s return window. Use the window that applied when you bought the item, and ask REI before relying on later membership.
Is there an REI holiday return extension for 2026?
REI’s holiday page, checked on October 28, 2026, shows no 2026 holiday return extension, qualifying purchase range or special deadline. Use the ordinary purchase-based window unless REI confirms otherwise, and check REI’s returns page again in November.
Can You Return Used Gear to REI?
Yes. REI says gear bought as eligible merchandise can qualify after gentle use if it is clean and in good condition, within the applicable window. REI’s used-gear help asks shoppers to launder clothing and clean equipment; dirty returns may be declined or sent back.
Ordinary wear, misuse and accidental damage are excluded. Trying boots outdoors is therefore different from seeking a refund because prolonged use wore them out; REI decides whether the condition meets its rules.
Bring original packaging if available. Damaged-item help says packaging is not required for damaged products. The return pages we checked do not state a tag or accessory rule, so bring all parts you have and ask before returning incomplete equipment. Gear sold used has different rules.
REI Outlet, Re/Supply and “no return” items: three different rules
REI Outlet follows REI.com’s policy; Re/Supply rules depend on where the used item was bought. The Outlet FAQ, used-gear help and Terms of Sale distinguish them:
| Purchase | Return rule | Route |
|---|---|---|
| REI Outlet | Ordinary member/nonmember windows and exceptions | Store or mail |
| Online Re/Supply | 30 days from purchase | Mail; ask REI for instructions |
| In-store Re/Supply | Final sale | No satisfaction return |
REI’s Terms of Sale describe online and in-store Re/Supply as just for REI Co-op Members, so the 30-day online return applies to used gear a member bought.
Those terms send online Re/Supply returns by mail, but the return pages we checked do not state the label fee, eligibility details or deadline action. Contact REI for instructions before shipping, and do not assume the standard $7.99 rate applies.
Used gear is sold as-is without REI’s warranty, separate from the online 30-day return. Trading in gear you no longer want is different: REI’s membership page lists Re/Supply trade-in as an REI Co-op Member benefit, and a trade-in is not a return. Express “no return” terms, including labeled closeouts, can also exclude purchases.
What REI Won’t Take Back
REI’s warranty exclusions, membership FAQ and sale terms identify these exclusions:
- Memberships, lift tickets, passes and gift cards; membership is nonrefundable.
- Purchases expressly sold with no-return terms.
- In-store Re/Supply purchases, which are final sale.
The return pages we checked do not state rules for custom or personalized, hygiene or safety items. Sale and coupon purchases can be returned, and the exchange section below explains how to keep a discount when swapping size or color. Check the product page and purchase terms or ask REI; an unlisted category is not an acceptance promise. Third-party seller rules are not covered here. Purchase-specific conditions can affect acceptance.
Can REI refuse a return?
Yes. REI’s Terms of Sale allow refusal when return conditions are unmet and permit requests for ID, proof or additional verifiable information. ID alone does not establish a purchase.
The return pages we checked do not state a numerical return limit or say how REI restricts accounts. Ask REI about your specific return rather than relying on an assumed number of permitted returns, and keep the purchase proof.
Can You Return to REI Without a Receipt?
REI can locate a membership-linked store purchase using your member number, but an unlinked store purchase requires a paper or email receipt. REI’s proof-of-purchase help separates the routes:
- Member-linked store purchase: give staff the member number. For mail, leave purchase details blank initially and provide that number.
- Unlinked store purchase: bring the paper or email store receipt.
- Online or phone order, including pickup: find the order number in email, the packing slip or Purchase History; staff can help locate online orders.
The return pages we checked do not describe a guaranteed payment-card-only lookup, ID-only return or no-proof store-credit fallback. Contact REI to locate the record before traveling or mailing; gifts have their own proof options.
Returning a gift from REI
REI accepts a gift receipt or, according to its used-gear help’s gift FAQ, a gift order number. That FAQ says refunds go to original payment unless the recipient requests store credit.
The return pages we checked do not specify the mailed gift-recipient form, any required note, timing, a no-proof fallback or whose membership window applies. Ask REI to confirm the recipient procedure and refund destination before choosing a store or mail return.
How to Return to REI: Store or Mail
REI’s return process is to locate proof, check the item’s eligible route, then take it to a store or create a mail return, pack and drop it off. Use the Returns & Exchanges Help Center to confirm the order’s options before choosing a route.
Return in an REI store
REI store returns and exchanges are free for eligible merchandise, including ordinary online orders. Online Re/Supply uses its separate mail procedure.
- Locate the receipt, member-linked purchase or order number; bring gift proof for a gift.
- Clean the item and gather available packaging and parts.
- Use REI’s store locator, then bring the item and proof to the store.
REI’s curbside help says it cannot accept curbside returns, so take the item inside. If lookup fails, contact REI before making the trip. Use REI’s contact page for unclear eligibility or shipping options.
Return by mail with a USPS label or QR code
REI’s mail instructions describe order lookup, item selection and packing; its help hub advertises USPS labels or QR codes for drop-off.
- Open Purchase History or order lookup. Use your account or order number plus billing ZIP code; use the member-number route for a recorded store purchase.
- Select the items, reason and return method. Check that the offered label or QR option covers your item before proceeding.
- Package securely, using original packaging if available. Check the oversize and hazardous-material restrictions below before sealing.
- Drop off using the offered method, well before the window ends. Keep tracking and the return confirmation so you can distinguish transit from refund processing.
The return pages we checked do not specify pickup options, label expiry or extra authorization requirements. Confirm these before relying on them. The return pages we checked also do not specify Alaska, Hawaii, territory and international label coverage; ask REI before paying for shipping from those locations.
Oversize items, bikes and boats
REI’s oversize instructions allow bike trainers, single strollers, skis and snowboards through the mail portal. Boats, roof boxes, rooftop tents, bikes and double strollers are excluded from that portal; the oversize help says eligible returns can go to a store free or by a carrier you arrange. REI’s e-bike return help words it differently for bikes: they must come back to an REI store. Take any bike to a store, and check your order’s return options or ask REI if they show otherwise.
For other excluded items, REI’s direct-carrier help says you pay the carrier. Include proof of purchase, your contact and member details and a return reason, and use a tracked, insured service. For another retailer’s large-gear rules, see the Academy Sports return policy guide. Portal exclusion alone does not make an REI item final sale.
Items with batteries, fuel or other hazardous materials
REI excludes hazardous materials from its online return process. Its hazmat guidance lists fuels, used fuel stoves, loose batteries, adhesives, used/charged CO2, aerosols, bug repellent and matches among the exclusions.
Items with installed batteries may use the process, with no more than two such items per parcel. Take excluded items to a store and ask REI about safe handling before transport.
How Much Does It Cost to Return to REI by Mail?
REI deducts $7.99 for standard mail return shipping, or $21.95 instead for oversize returns. The label help applies $21.95 to packages over 32 lb; REI’s oversize help instead charges it for listed categories such as bike trainers, single strollers, skis and snowboards, with no weight test. Check the charge shown before confirming the label, because light skis may still cost $21.95. A free store return saves the full deduction when that route is available.
For an applicable damaged/defective shipment, REI’s damaged-item help says to choose “Shipment issue” to waive return shipping. Select it only when it accurately describes the problem; ask REI about an incorrect shipment or any unclear waiver eligibility.
The return pages we checked do not explain fee aggregation across items, orders or parcels, consolidation rules or low-value waivers. Do not multiply $7.99 by item count; check the displayed charge. The return pages we checked also do not state a general restocking rule or original delivery/handling refundability; confirm them before estimating your net refund.
Example: Assume one eligible parcel, a $100 merchandise refund, no waiver, tax, rewards, original-shipping refund or other adjustments. Standard shipping leaves $100 − $7.99 = $92.01; a portal oversize parcel leaves $100 − $21.95 = $78.05.
When Will You Get Your REI Refund?
REI’s dedicated refund-timing help says mail returns are processed within four business days of receipt. REI’s label help words it differently, giving 10–14 business days after arrival. Plan around the longer processing estimate before following up; check the refund email and Purchase History for your return’s status.
| Clock | Published timing | What to track |
|---|---|---|
| Return eligibility | Usually one year for members; 90 days for nonmembers; electronics 90 days | Purchase date and product exception |
| REI mail processing | Refund help: four business days from receipt; label help: 10–14 business days after arrival | Warehouse receipt, then processing email |
| Posting after processing | Refund help: typically up to 10 business days; label help: 10–14 days, day type unspecified | Payment account after processing |
The refund help says to contact your bank after 10 business days. Waiting 14 business days after the processing email covers both pages’ wording; if the refund still has not posted, contact your bank or card issuer, then REI. These are separate clocks, not a single promised total.
| Return/payment situation | Refund destination or timing |
|---|---|
| General mail return | Original payment, subject to exceptions |
| Store purchase returned by mail | Check; up to three weeks from REI’s receipt |
| Bank posting after an in-store return | Not stated on return pages |
| PayPal, Apple Pay, gift card, split tender or cash threshold | Detailed rules not stated on return pages |
The refund help supplies the mail/check routes. Before returning, confirm with REI any payment allocations not stated on the return pages we checked. Damaged-item help separately quotes two to six weeks for refunds without defining the starting event; it does not resolve the general timing conflict. Rewards can change both destination and amount.
How REI member rewards affect your refund
REI’s refund help says Total REI Rewards are credited within one business day after processing. Its loyalty terms also allow deduction of previously calculated prior-year Promotional Rewards when qualifying full-price purchases are returned. That adjustment can reduce cash back; it is separate from return shipping.
For mailed store purchases, the refund help includes rewards in the check. The loyalty terms instead return Promotional Rewards to the balance regardless of method, with discretionary exceptions. Check your member balance before assuming the check includes that portion; contact REI if neither shows it.
How Do REI Exchanges Work?
REI exchanges are free in store for eligible items, subject to availability. A mail exchange is a return plus a separate new order: the applicable shipping deduction remains, so check that the replacement is in stock before sending the original back.
REI’s exchange help says shoppers who used a coupon or sale price should contact phone/chat support while reordering the same item in another size or color to request the original price. The replacement color must also have been on sale; stores can assist at checkout. If damage prompted the exchange, check the defect guidance too.
Damaged, Defective and Warranty Returns
REI’s damaged-item help directs shoppers to bring proof to a store or use the applicable “Shipment issue” mail route. Clean used items first.
The warranty help says manufacturing defects can be returned “anytime,” but also lists 365/90-day timeframes; damaged-item help gives ordinary windows. Report defects within your ordinary window where possible. Outside it, contact REI with proof rather than assuming unlimited eligibility.
REI’s Terms of Sale limit REI’s warranty to manufacturing defects at sale in new REI-branded goods. Other brands have manufacturer-specific warranties; used gear is sold as-is without REI warranty. Ask REI to confirm the route for your item, since warranty rights are separate from satisfaction returns.
Your federal rights versus REI’s policy
REI’s satisfaction policy is voluntary. The FTC’s warranty guidance explains that remedies depend on written or implied warranty coverage and state law; a repair opportunity may precede a refund.
Keep the receipt, warranty and correspondence, consistent with FTC recordkeeping advice. This national guide cannot determine state-specific rights or order-specific remedies.
REI Return Policy Mistakes to Avoid
Avoid these mistakes:
- Mailing eligible gear you could return free in store, losing the shipping deduction.
- Counting from delivery instead of purchase.
- Sending dirty clothing or equipment.
- Treating Outlet like Re/Supply, or in-store Re/Supply like online used gear.
- Assuming a GPS device or camera receives the member year.
- Leaving a mailed return until the last week when the return pages we checked do not specify the deadline action.
See how StoreReturners checks retailer policies. Where this guide says the return pages we checked do not state a detail, ask REI before relying on it.
FAQ
Does REI charge a restocking fee?
REI does not state a general restocking-fee rule on the return pages we checked. Its $7.99 standard mail deduction, or $21.95 for oversize parcels, is return shipping, and a free store return avoids it. Check your order’s return options or ask REI before assuming there are no other charges. Mail-label help
Can I return an REI.com order to a store?
Yes, eligible ordinary REI.com purchases can be returned in store free. Bring the order number or other accepted proof, and check product restrictions first. Online Re/Supply used gear is the exception: REI’s terms send it back by mail, so contact REI for instructions first. REI sale terms
Is the REI membership fee refundable?
No. REI’s membership FAQ says membership is nonrefundable, and its exclusions list memberships among nonreturnable purchases. Do not treat membership like a jacket or tent with a satisfaction-return window. If your question concerns a disputed membership transaction rather than changing your mind, ask REI to review it. Membership FAQ
Does REI refund the original shipping charge?
The return pages we checked do not say whether REI refunds original delivery or handling charges. The “Shipment issue” waiver addresses return shipping, so it does not establish reimbursement of the original delivery charge. Ask REI to confirm both amounts before estimating the refund for your shipment. Damaged-item help
Does REI have a three-day cooling-off period?
The FTC Cooling-Off Rule does not create a general three-day cancellation right for ordinary REI purchases. It excludes sales made entirely online, by mail or phone, and negotiations completed at a seller’s permanent business. Use the REI return policy for ordinary satisfaction returns; warranty rights remain separate. FTC exclusions
