H&M Return Policy UK: 30 Days, £2.99 Fee and Store Returns

The UK H&M return policy gives 30 days from receiving an online order to register a return, or 14 for sale, designer, limited-collection and Studio items. Eligible H&M-brand store returns are free; parcel returns of H&M items cost £2.99 per order, deducted from your refund. Other brands sold on hm.com follow separate routes, as H&M’s returns help explains.

Key facts

  • Online returns have a 30-day registration window, reduced to 14 days for sale and selected collections. H&M’s terms then allow 14 more days to send the goods, but its help page words it differently, so send within the 30 (or 14) days.
  • Eligible H&M items returned to stores and faulty-item returns are free. H&M-item parcels cost £2.99 per order; external brands add £2.99 per brand.
  • & Other Stories, ARKET, COS, Monki and Weekday purchases through H&M use H&M’s portal, never H&M stores. External brands follow their delivery note.
  • Refunds normally go to the original payment method. Online orders returned in a store are refunded immediately; after the refund email, allow 5 working days for cards or up to 30 days for PayPal.
  • As of 28 October 2026, H&M had published no Christmas 2026 extension, and its membership terms offer no free returns.

How Long Do You Have to Return to H&M?

H&M allows 30 days from receipt to register an ordinary full-price online return, or 14 days for sale and designer items. H&M’s help also gives limited collections and Studio 14 days; listed Group brands have 30 days full price and 14 for sale/last chance.

Day-counting details are unpublished; register and drop off a few days early.

Do You Have to Post It Within the 30 Days?

H&M’s pages word it differently. The returns help uses “returned within” wording for some categories, while online terms section 6.1 allows 30/14 days to notify H&M, then another 14 days to return goods.

Neither specifies whether the voluntary return step means dispatch, carrier scan or warehouse arrival. Section 6.3 also says returns after 30 days (14 for sale) may be refunded as a digital voucher, without explaining how that fits the extra 14 days.

Register and send within the original 30/14 days; keep drop-off proof. Late acceptance and an original-payment refund are not guaranteed. The terms accepted at purchase govern your order; check portal eligibility and ask Customer Service about ambiguity. Notice can alternatively be given by email, letter or cancellation form, with goods returned separately.

What About Things You Bought in an H&M Store?

H&M store purchases must go back to a store; they cannot join an online postal return. The reviewed UK pages do not publish a general store-purchase window, start event or receipt rule: check your receipt or ask in store.

GOV.UK says unwanted, non-faulty in-person purchases have no general legal return right. Compare Primark’s in-store return rules.

Is There an H&M Christmas Return Extension for 2026?

As of 28 October 2026, H&M’s UK returns policy and terms show no Christmas 2026 extension. No eligible purchase range, extended deadline or exclusions are published. Older guides still quote holiday dates that don’t apply to 2026; use the ordinary 30/14-day rules unless H&M announces otherwise.

Does H&M Charge for Returns?

H&M charges £2.99 per order for ordinary H&M-item parcel returns, deducted from the refund. Eligible H&M store returns and faulty-item returns are free, according to H&M’s return-fee guidance.

External brands add £2.99 per brand on top of any H&M fee, unless stated otherwise online. No Core/Plus waiver is published. H&M’s main returns page words the fee as £2.99 for each returned brand, while its returns FAQ says £2.99 per order. If your order mixes H&M with & Other Stories, ARKET, COS, Monki or Weekday, or goes back in several parcels, check the charge the portal shows before you send.

Example — H&M-only store versus parcel: assume one £40 H&M-only order of eligible ordinary goods, with no discounts or damage deductions. The merchandise refund is £37.01 by parcel or £40.00 in store. Compare Zara’s store and parcel return options if choosing routes across fast-fashion purchases.

Example — external brand: assume H&M goods and one external brand from one order both return by their instructed parcel routes, without exemptions, discounts or damage deductions. Fees total £2.99 + £2.99 = £5.98.

Example — H&M-only shared box: assume two separately registered ordinary H&M orders share a box, without exemptions, discounts or damage deductions. Fees remain 2 × £2.99 = £5.98. Refundable outbound delivery is additional.

Is Your Original Delivery Charge Refunded?

H&M refunds paid original delivery when every item in the order is returned; partial returns do not qualify. Its external-brand guidance says external brands’ bulky delivery fees are not refunded, even when the whole order comes back.

H&M doesn’t say whether that applies when you cancel under your legal 14-day right. Regulation 34 normally requires standard outbound delivery reimbursement on full eligible cancellation, excluding premium-delivery excess. Ask H&M for the charge breakdown.

H&M, Group Brands and External Brands: Three Return Routes

H&M separates own goods, Group brands and external brands. External products may ship directly from a brand, but H&M’s terms don’t say who the legal seller is for each external-brand item. Its help gives external brands 30 days from receipt, with returns following the delivery note.

Rule H&M items & Other Stories, ARKET, COS, Monki, Weekday External brands

How to Return an H&M Order

H&M’s Customer Service page links to registration for H&M and Group-brand online items. External-brand items follow their delivery note instead.

Returning an online order to an H&M store

Eligible H&M-brand online goods can go to a store free.

  1. Check the product/location exclusions below and find an H&M store.
  2. Bring the goods and show the order QR from My Orders or the order/shipping confirmation email.
  3. Check the refund confirmation: H&M issues the refund immediately, with card/PayPal posting still to follow.

Watch out for collection restrictions and HOME/MAMA exclusions in Northern Ireland; store acceptance is not universal.

Returning by parcel through H&M’s returns portal

H&M and listed Group-brand online goods use the portal. Ordinary H&M parcels cost £2.99 per order; check mixed-brand charges.

  1. Open Register a Return through Customer Service, or use H&M’s returns portal.
  2. Select the items and return reasons.
  3. Choose collection or drop-off from the options offered for your order.
  4. Follow the printable-label or QR instructions for your locker or parcel shop.
  5. Pack securely; watertight replacement outer packaging is allowed for ordinary items.
  6. Register every order separately, even if combining eligible orders in one box.
  7. Keep drop-off proof; look for warehouse confirmation. Contact H&M if no confirmation email arrives 14 days after posting.

Watch out: furniture and lighting must go back in their original packaging, and cosmetics classed as dangerous goods need an LQ label (see below).

Large items, furniture and lighting

H&M HOME furniture and lighting go to the warehouse in original packaging. No separate collection price is published; check the charge before booking.

  1. Check dimensions and weight: H&M’s large-item help says InPost can’t take parcels above 41 × 38 × 64 cm.
  2. Use collection for large parcels; book through the portal if over 15 kg or 70 × 50 × 60 cm.

Watch out: these are method limits, not universal maximum return sizes.

Packing cosmetics that count as dangerous goods

H&M requires secure packing and an LQ (limited quantity) label for dangerous-goods cosmetics.

  1. Reuse labelled packaging or print a replacement from H&M’s dangerous-goods instructions.
  2. Pack securely, then register normally. Remove the LQ label when returning no dangerous goods.

Watch out: cosmetics must also be unopened to qualify for a change-of-mind return.

Which H&M Items Have Shorter Windows or Can’t Go to a Store?

H&M’s category and collection help overrides the general store route for the items below.

Rows describe online purchases unless marked; H&M doesn’t publish windows for ordinary store purchases.

Item/collection Window Store? Route
Sale 14 days If otherwise eligible Portal or store
Limited/designer collections 14 days No Online return
Studio 14 days Yes Store or warehouse
Elie Saab H&M 14 days from delivery No return or exchange Online return
HOME furniture/lighting Check applicable item window No Warehouse, original packaging
HOME/MAMA in Northern Ireland Check applicable item window Not in NI stores Online return
Wrong/missing items; missing HOME assembly parts Contact support Order errors not handled in stores Customer Service
Kelly Wearstler H&M HOME (store purchases) H&M’s collection page says 3 days Same store, resellable, with receipt Check receipt; online purchases stay online

Collection banners change: check your product page or order confirmation.

Condition, Hygiene and Packaging Rules

H&M’s voluntary return conditions require complete goods with labels attached: no washing, alteration, soiling, damage or wear beyond trying on. Non-compliant goods may be sent back to the home address on your H&M account, so check it’s up to date.

Under statutory cancellation, handling beyond shop-like inspection can instead lead to a proportionate loss-of-value deduction. H&M’s terms exclude that deduction for faulty, damaged or misdescribed goods.

  • Swimwear: clean, unworn, tags and hygiene strip intact.
  • Cosmetics and pierced jewellery: unopened.
  • Sealed hygiene-sensitive goods, including certain underwear, can lose withdrawal rights after unsealing; this is not a blanket underwear exclusion.
  • External-brand plants and flowers: no change-of-mind returns.

General personalised-item and final-sale rules are not published in the reviewed sources: ask H&M before relying on a return. H&M’s gift card terms give 28 days, starting the day after delivery, to cancel an online gift-card order through Customer Service. The refund includes standard delivery costs but excludes any incurred cost of returning the card. None of these conditions limits your rights if an item is faulty (see below).

Can You Return to H&M Without a Receipt?

H&M online returns need order evidence, not a paper receipt. Use these supported alternatives:

  1. Order QR or order/shipping confirmation email for eligible store returns.
  2. Member digital receipts/purchase history, including store purchases, under membership terms §1.3.
  3. A replacement online receipt requested from Customer Service by a non-member.

A general no-proof route, ID-only or bank-card lookup, gift-receipt outcome and guaranteed store credit are unpublished. Ask support before travelling without evidence. GOV.UK allows other proof such as bank statements for fault claims; that does not create a voluntary return entitlement.

H&M Refunds: How Long Do They Take?

H&M refunds the original payment method unless you choose a merchandise card during registration. H&M’s help and terms section 6.7 use different refund triggers:

Do not add those into a guaranteed total. Keep posting evidence and contact H&M if warehouse confirmation has not arrived 14 days after posting.

Route Return window H&M processing Bank/provider posting
Parcel 30/14 days to register; deadline ambiguity above Conflicting 14-day issue triggers above; warehouse confirmation; see above Card: 5 working days after refund email; PayPal: up to 30 days after email
Online order returned to store Same applicable online window Issued immediately Same card/PayPal posting allowances
Store purchase Not published Not published Not published

Statutory cancellation has its own regulation 34 reimbursement clock, separate from H&M’s transit estimate.

Merchandise Card, Gift Card, Klarna and Mixed-Payment Refunds

H&M’s payment refund help says:

  • Merchandise cards are emailed within 1 day after processing, avoiding bank posting; unavailable for Klarna orders.
  • Gift-card-paid merchandise returns produce an emailed e-gift card.
  • Mixed payments refund card/Klarna/PayPal first, then any remainder as an e-gift card.
  • Klarna users should report returns in Orders → Payments with Klarna to pause the invoice. Pay Later updates are stated as within 24 hours; H&M must still process the return.

Why Was Only Part of Your Parcel Refunded?

H&M says mixed H&M/Group-brand parcels can generate separate refunds; its help says Group-brand items are refunded first. Mixed-brand fee wording conflicts, so check each refund before assuming goods are missing.

Exchanges at H&M

H&M’s terms section 6.4 allows eligible online purchases paid by credit card, gift card or both to be refunded in store and immediately fund an exchange or new purchase. H&M’s membership Q&A describes same-value exchanges in stores only.

No general online exchange process, stock hold or price protection is published. Returning and reordering is an option to consider, without assuming the original price remains available.

H&M Membership: Points, Vouchers and Frequent Returns

H&M’s membership terms remove earned points on returns. Only the amount paid is refunded; bonus-voucher savings are not restored. No return-fee waiver or longer Core/Plus window is published.

The terms allow payment-method changes or account restrictions for abnormally frequent returns, without a numerical threshold. Customer Service can review a claimed mistake.

Faulty H&M Items and Your UK Consumer Rights

H&M’s faulty-item help directs online shoppers to register through normal returns, without a return fee. After 30 days, contact Customer Service with an image for a new label; the warehouse inspects the item.

Describe the defect on the form or to support. H&M’s terms offer repair/replacement, or reduction/refund where those are impossible or disproportionate. Wrong/missing items and missing HOME assembly parts also go to support, not stores.

Statutory rights are separate:

  • Distance cancellation: regulation 30 normally allows 14 days after receipt, from the last goods in split one-order deliveries. Under regulation 35, send/handover follows within 14 days of notification, without undue delay, unless the trader collects; disclosed direct return costs may apply.
  • Cancellation refunds: where the trader has not offered collection, regulation 34 requires reimbursement within 14 days of receiving goods or dispatch evidence, whichever is earlier; collection cases differ.
  • Faulty rejection: Consumer Rights Act section 22 normally provides 30 days starting after ownership, delivery and required installation are complete. Section 20 puts reasonable return costs on the trader, subject to the in-person return exception, and requires refund within 14 days of agreeing entitlement.
  • Beyond 30 days: GOV.UK says that within six months the trader generally must repair/replace unless it proves the item was not faulty at purchase. Six months is not the end of all rights.

Sale or hygiene restrictions do not remove fault rights. Example: assume a sale item develops a fault after the 14-day voluntary window. That deadline alone does not end statutory rights; the remedy depends on the fault and circumstances.

This guide reflects H&M’s published UK pages as checked on 28 October 2026. The returns portal was not tested with a live order, and some FAQ details come from H&M’s expandable help answers. It is general information, not legal advice; see how StoreReturners checks policies against official pages.

H&M Return Policy Mistakes That Cost You Money

These H&M return policy mistakes cost money or deadlines:

  • Paying £2.99 for a parcel when an eligible store return is practical; compare Next’s courier return charges when organising other high-street returns.
  • Taking COS or ARKET purchases to an H&M store instead of using the portal.
  • Treating sale items as having 30 days rather than 14.
  • Registering on day 30 and posting later without checking the conflicting deadline/voucher wording.
  • Returning only part of an order but expecting original delivery back.
  • Removing a swimwear hygiene strip or sending dangerous-goods cosmetics without an LQ label.

FAQ

Can I return H&M swimwear or make-up?

H&M accepts change-of-mind swimwear returns when items are clean and unworn, with tags and the hygiene strip intact. Make-up and pierced jewellery must be unopened. Unsealing hygiene-sensitive goods can remove withdrawal rights under H&M’s terms. Faulty goods remain a separate issue; report the defect rather than assuming the hygiene rule ends your rights.

I don’t have a return label; how do I get a new one?

H&M’s return registration provides printable-label or QR instructions according to the method available for your order. Start through Register a Return rather than assuming a paper label was enclosed. For faulty items after 30 days, contact Customer Service with an image to request a new label and follow its instructions.

Will I get my H&M points or bonus voucher back if I return something?

H&M removes points earned on returned purchases. A refund covers the amount actually paid for the returned item, so savings from a used bonus voucher are not refunded or restored. Check the discounted amount on your order before comparing the refund with the item’s original price; a voucher is not refundable cash.

Can I put two H&M orders in one return parcel?

H&M allows eligible orders to share a parcel, but each order must be registered separately. Combining two ordinary H&M orders does not combine their fees: at £2.99 per order, the total is £5.98 unless an exemption applies. External brands follow separate delivery-note instructions; mixed Group-brand fees need a portal check.

Can I return an H&M Elie Saab piece to a store?

H&M’s Elie Saab collection notice says these purchases cannot be returned or exchanged in store and have a 14-day window from delivery. Use the online return route and retain evidence of sending. The general H&M return policy store option does not override this collection restriction; check your order’s instructions before travelling.
