River Island Return Policy: 28 Days, £2.95 Fee and Refunds

The River Island return policy gives 28 days to return eligible direct UK purchases: from delivery for online orders, or from the purchase date for store purchases. Items must be clean, unworn, tagged and saleable. UK store returns are free; postal returns of online orders through the portal cost £2.95, deducted from the refund.

Key facts

  • River Island allows 28 days; the separate 14-day postal handover instruction gives no confirmed extension.
  • Eligible UK stores: free. Online portal: £2.95 per return, not per item.
  • Online orders returned in store receive an automatic original-payment refund without presenting the card.
  • River Island targets refund processing within 10 calendar days of courier handover; card providers can take up to 10 more calendar days (PayPal, Clearpay, Apple Pay, Google Pay, Klarna and gift cards: 2–7).
  • The Christmas notice offers gift-card refunds for purchases from 22 October until 14 January, but gives no year.

Direct purchases include River Island’s website/app, UK stores and staff-placed orders; the online seller is River Island Clothing Co. Limited. For other UK retailers, see the UK returns guides.

Ways to return to River Island

Method Cost How to start When the refund starts
Eligible UK store: online orders, store purchases, staff-placed orders Free Bring receipt or despatch email When processed in store
Royal Mail drop-off (online orders) £2.95 Portal: QR code or printed label Target: within 10 calendar days of handover
Evri ParcelShop (online orders) £2.95 Portal: QR code Same handover-based target
InPost drop-off or 24-hour locker (online orders) £2.95 Portal: QR code Same handover-based target
Royal Mail home collection (online orders) £2.95 Portal: courier brings label Same handover-based target

Postal returns through the portal are for online orders; River Island’s published route for store purchases and staff-placed orders is a UK store.

Use the official returns portal, store locator or returns help. The courier options the portal shows for your order are the ones available.

How Long Is the River Island Return Window?

28 days: from online delivery or store purchase, says the UK policy.

River Island does not specify calendar versus working days, whether the starting day counts, or whether a posted return must be registered, handed over, scanned or received by day 28. Create and hand over a postal return a few days before day 28.

UK law gives no general change-of-mind refund right for in-store purchases, so this 28-day window is River Island’s own policy. To compare another high-street chain’s return window, see the New Look return policy.

Does Creating a Return Give You an Extra 14 Days?

River Island publishes no guaranteed extension beyond 28 days. The FAQ requires drop-off or collection within 14 days after creating a return.

River Island does not say whether a return created on day 27 can still be handed over after day 28. Hand it over inside the 28 days, and do not add the two periods together.

Is There a River Island Christmas Returns Extension for 2026?

River Island’s Christmas notice does not identify a year, so a 2026-specific extension cannot be confirmed. The notice says online and store purchases from 22 October can be returned for a gift-card refund until 14 January, alongside the standard policy.

The notice gives no last qualifying purchase date, and it does not say whether 14 January is the date to create, hand over or deliver the return. In store, bring proof of purchase for original-price treatment. If you want your money back on the original payment method, use the standard 28 days instead. Older guides quote a different October start date; the live notice says 22 October.

What Condition Must River Island Returns Be In?

River Island requires standard returns to be clean, unworn, tagged and saleable. Additional product, packaging, website or in-store conditions apply under the terms.

Return original packaging; inner bags are recommended. Gifts, electricals, make-up and cosmetics specifically need all original packaging. River Island’s pages publish no general rule refusing opened packaging and no accessories checklist. Check product conditions before paying postage.

How Much Does It Cost to Return to River Island?

£0 in an eligible UK store; £2.95 per portal return is River Island’s published charge. The terms deduct it after warehouse processing. The charge is not per item; the pages do not list a general restocking fee or extra collection charge.

For an item faulty or incorrect on initial delivery, select the faulty or “Incorrect Item Received” reason and explain the problem. The fee is waived when the warehouse confirms that assessment. Later faults have separate statutory return-cost protection, covered below; an automatic portal waiver for them is not published.

Splitting a return changes what River Island deducts, as the rules below show. To compare another high-street retailer’s postal return charge, see the Next return policy.

Split Returns and Multiple Orders

River Island’s terms and FAQ distinguish:

  • Two returns from one order initiated on the same day incur one charge.
  • Separate returns from one order incur a charge each when both registration days and warehouse-processing days differ.
  • Different registration days but the same processing day: the charge is not specified; ask support before relying on one fee.
  • Different orders should be returned separately; combining them in one parcel still attracts a fee per order and may delay refunds.

Example: Assume an eligible £50 item from a larger order, with no fault or adjustment, is returned as one ordinary postal return of an online order. The refund is £50 − £2.95 = £47.05 (the original delivery charge is normally not refunded).

Example: Assume two different orders, neither fee-exempt, are returned in one parcel. Charges total £5.90; processing may be delayed. Delivery refunds are separate.

Is the Delivery Charge Refunded?

A partial return normally does not recover the original delivery charge, according to the refund FAQ. Cancelling the whole online order under the statutory right includes standard delivery; a premium upgrade is refundable only up to the cheapest generally acceptable delivery cost.

Delivery charges may be partly or fully refundable for late paid Next Day/Nominated Day delivery, lost orders or undeliverable orders returned to River Island. If a delivery refund you expect has not arrived with the item refund, contact customer service and keep your return proof.

How to Return to River Island

Online orders can go back to a UK store or by post through the portal; River Island’s published route for store purchases and staff-placed orders is a UK store. If you mostly shop online, compare the postal route in the ASOS returns policy.

At a UK River Island Store

Eligible UK-bought goods can go to UK stores, excluding Jersey and the Isle of Man. River Island’s returns policy requires the same purchase currency. Its terms word this differently, describing store refunds in another currency converted to the store’s local currency. If you paid in a currency other than pounds, ask customer service before travelling.

  1. Find an eligible branch through the official locator.
  2. Bring the items and receipt or online despatch email.
  3. For a store purchase, bring the original card; an ordinary online order is refunded automatically without it.
  4. Keep the refund receipt or email, then allow for the provider posting time in the refunds table.

By Post Through the Returns Portal

River Island’s postal instructions for online orders require registration before courier handover:

  1. Open riverisland.com/returns, use My orders, or follow the guest route with your despatch email.
  2. Select the items, return reason and available courier method.
  3. Use original packaging. Use the emailed QR code for printer-free drop-off, print a Royal Mail label, or let Royal Mail bring the collection label. No paper returns note needed.
  4. Hand over within 14 days of creation and well inside the original 28-day window.
  5. Keep postage proof until refunded; without it, lost parcels may not be credited.

Orders Placed by Staff in Store

The FAQ requires staff-placed orders to return to a store, including home deliveries.

  1. Take the goods to an eligible UK store.
  2. Bring the receipt or despatch email and original payment card.
  3. Request a refund or an exchange, subject to stock; do not register a warehouse return.

Wrong Courier, Missing QR Code and Tracking

Wrong courier? River Island allows cancellation through the registration-email link and rebooking before handover, never after drop-off or collection.

For a missing QR email, check junk/spam, then ask for a resend through customer support. Track using the return emails and retain postage proof.

Can You Return to River Island Without a Receipt?

Sometimes: the lost-receipt FAQ separates four cases:

  • Store purchase: staff at a UK store, excluding Jersey and the Isle of Man, may locate the transaction by asking questions. Success is not guaranteed.
  • Online account order: use My orders or the despatch confirmation email.
  • Guest order without the email: contact customer service for help obtaining the order number.
  • Store-bought gift without a receipt: a store may offer gift-card credit at the current selling price, rather than the original price.

For statutory faulty-goods claims, other evidence such as a bank statement or packaging can establish purchase from the seller, as GOV.UK explains. That proof supports a faulty-goods claim; it does not make River Island’s voluntary lookup or change-of-mind refund available.

Returning a River Island Gift

River Island’s store-gift route allows return or exchange within 28 days of purchase with a gift or regular receipt; refunds go to a gift card. The pages word the branch rule differently: the gift FAQ names the original store, while the general policy allows any eligible UK store. Use the original branch if possible; otherwise ask the intended branch or customer service before travelling.

For online gifts, recipients can return or exchange in an eligible store with the despatch email. A postal return must be started by the purchaser through their account; the refund goes to the purchaser’s original payment method.

River Island Refunds: How Long Do They Take?

River Island targets 10 calendar days from courier handover to starting a postal refund, followed by provider posting, says its FAQ:

Stage Trigger and published timing
Return window 28 days from delivery/purchase; courier handover within 14 days of creation, without a confirmed extension
River Island processing Posted: target within 10 calendar days of drop-off/collection. Store: starts when processed at the till
Provider posting Begins after refund processing/confirmation; allowances below are additional
Payment provider Posting allowance, calendar days
Credit/debit card Up to 10
PayPal or Clearpay Up to 5
Apple Pay, Google Pay or Klarna Up to 7
River Island gift card Up to 2

For online orders refunded in store, the terms specify a confirmation email within 24 hours. That does not mean cleared funds or warehouse processing.

If no refund confirmation arrives after the 10-day target, contact River Island with your proof of postage (our practical suggestion, not a River Island deadline). If you have a confirmation and the provider allowance has passed, River Island directs you to your payment provider.

Example: Assume an ordinary debit-card postal return: the 10-calendar-day processing target plus up-to-10-day posting allowance gives 20 calendar days, an illustrative total, not a guaranteed deadline.

Where Does a River Island Refund Go?

River Island normally refunds the original payment method at the discounted price paid. Ordinary online orders returned in store are refunded automatically without the card; store purchases and staff-placed orders need the original card; if the original debit or credit card is unavailable, River Island offers a gift-card refund instead.

That FAQ fallback is voluntary; statutory money refunds remain separate. Gift-card purchases go to a Refund Card; mixed-payment allocation is unpublished. Want a different size instead? River Island’s exchanges are in-store only.

Exchanges at River Island

River Island offers stock-dependent UK store exchanges for online, store and staff-placed orders, excluding Jersey and the Isle of Man. Online orders need the despatch email; Republic of Ireland stores cannot exchange them.

The FAQ publishes no postal exchange, stock-hold or price-difference rule. Our suggestion, not River Island’s instruction: to get another size by post, return the item (£2.95 by portal) and reorder.

Items River Island Won’t Take Back

River Island’s FAQ, terms and gift-card terms specify:

Item River Island’s rule What still applies
Underwear/intimate wear Excluded Faulty-goods rights remain
Grooming products Excluded Faulty-goods rights remain
Piercing products/pierced jewellery Excluded Faulty-goods rights remain
Food Excluded Statutory rights remain
Swimwear Excluded if hygiene strip removed No blanket swimwear ban
Cosmetics Excluded if hygiene seal broken Packaging conditions also apply
Gift cards No voluntary return/refund Statutory rights preserved

The promotion terms name a Liverpool Church Street × Alder Hey Children’s Charity hat collection with no change-of-mind returns/exchanges, but faulty returns with proof to England/Wales stores; the terms do not say whether the hats are still on sale.

No general shorter sale window or final-sale rule is published. UK cancellation law has distinct exceptions, including personalised/perishable goods and unsuitable sealed hygiene goods once unsealed. Opening packaging for shop-style inspection does not itself remove ordinary cancellation rights; faults need a separate assessment.

Faulty or Wrong Items and Your Consumer Rights

For faults or wrong items, River Island says select faulty item or “Incorrect Item Received” and explain. Staff orders remain store-only. The terms waive the fee for warehouse-confirmed faults/wrong items on initial delivery; no separate voluntary reporting deadline, photo requirement or automatic waiver for later faults is published.

River Island guarantees purchase-price account credit for inadequate wear caused by defective workmanship/materials. Account type, duration and posting time are unpublished; statutory rights remain.

The Consumer Rights Act 2015 normally gives faulty goods a 30-day rejection right after delivery/possession conditions are met. Tell the seller you reject them. The retailer bears reasonable return costs except in-person transport to where you obtained possession.

An agreed rejection refund is due without undue delay, within 14 days of agreement of entitlement, normally by the same payment method without a refund fee. Money paid should not become gift-card credit without your express agreement.

Afterwards, repair/replacement, then price reduction or final rejection may apply. For those remedies, faults within six months are generally presumed present at delivery unless disproved or incompatible with their nature: no unconditional refund guarantee. Sale goods retain the same rights.

This guide cannot settle three points from River Island’s pages: which store takes a store-bought gift, how its cancellation wording fits the law, and what must happen by day 28 for a posted return. For your order, ask River Island customer service on 0344 576 6444. See how StoreReturners checks policies.

Cancelling an Online Order Under the 14-Day Law

Eligible online cancellation normally ends 14 days after receipt day (last goods for split deliveries). The Consumer Contracts Regulations 2013 require dispatch within 14 days after notice. Refunds are due without undue delay, within 14 days of receipt or earlier proof of sending; if collection is offered, notification starts that refund clock.

River Island’s terms word the timetable differently: 14 days from receipt day, with warehouse arrival within 28 days of receipt. Safely meet both by emailing customer.services@river-island.com, expressly cancelling under the Consumer Contracts Regulations 2013, well within 14 days counting delivery as day one. Post promptly and keep notice/postage proof; ask support to confirm the timetable for your order. This is general information, not legal advice.

Disclosed direct return costs may fall to the shopper; excessive handling may justify diminished-value deductions. Reimbursement itself cannot attract a fee. River Island’s pages do not say whether the £2.95 portal charge applies to a statutory cancellation; ask customer service when you give notice.

River Island separately states cancellation refunds take 10 days from sending back, without defining day type or bank posting. This is separate from ordinary-return stages and statutory deadlines. Statutory notice differs from the pre-despatch “cancel order” button; keep evidence.

River Island Return Policy Mistakes That Cost You Money

  • Paying postage unnecessarily: eligible online orders can go to a UK store free, avoiding the £2.95 portal deduction.
  • Combining orders: one parcel does not avoid a charge for each order and may delay refunds.
  • Splitting registrations across days: separate registration and processing days can trigger separate charges; other combinations are unpublished.
  • Adding return periods: the 14-day handover instruction does not establish an extension beyond 28 days.
  • Expecting seasonal money back: the Christmas notice extends gift-card refunds, alongside the standard policy.

FAQ

Do members get free returns or a longer window?

River Island does not publish a longer return window or return-fee waiver for RI Members Club or Unlimited Delivery customers in its published terms. Outbound delivery benefits do not establish free returns. The membership terms mention digital receipts but do not promise a store can retrieve one; use the lost-receipt routes above.

Can I return an item bought outside the UK to a UK store?

River Island says UK stores cannot accept goods bought outside the UK. Its policy requires the same purchase currency; its terms describe local-currency conversion. For non-pound purchases, ask customer service before travelling. UK store returns exclude Jersey and the Isle of Man; online exchanges exclude Republic of Ireland stores.

What happens to my refund if my card has expired?

River Island’s refund FAQ says an expired-card refund normally reaches the bank account still linked to that card, provided the account remains open. Expiry alone does not mean a gift-card refund is required. If the underlying account has closed, contact customer service so River Island can investigate the refund route.

Can I return a River Island gift card?

River Island gift-card terms say cards themselves are not returnable or refundable under the voluntary policy, while statutory rights remain preserved. Goods bought using a gift card are different: their refund goes to a Refund Card rather than cash. The published terms do not specify how mixed-payment refunds are divided.

Can I return River Island clothing bought from another retailer?

River Island’s published UK rules do not specify acceptance of clothing bought from another retailer or marketplace seller. Contact the seller shown on your order or receipt for its return instructions. The River Island return policy described here covers direct purchases; do not assume a brand label identifies the seller.
