How Long Do You Have to Return Something to Burlington?

Burlington’s standard window is 30 days from purchase. The return policy requires returning the merchandise within that window; contacting customer service alone is not a published substitute.

Burlington does not define calendar versus business days, whether purchase day counts, or cutoff and closure adjustments. Return a few days early rather than calculating a last-minute deadline. Shoppers using both chains can compare Marshalls’ return-window rules before planning a trip; Burlington members should also check the extension below.

Does the Burlington loyalty program give you 45 days?

Burlington loyalty members get 45 days from purchase at select stores, according to the loyalty terms. The terms also say full program benefits require staying opted in to Burlington’s marketing emails; if you unsubscribed, ask whether the extension still applies before relying on it. Ask an associate to confirm availability.

The extension terms do not publish the refund form or service-fee treatment for days 31–45. Return within 30 days if a card refund matters; otherwise, ask the store before processing. A Burlington credit card alone doesn’t add time: cardholders get loyalty benefits only if they are also enrolled in the Loyalty Program.

What happens if you return an item after 30 days?

Burlington gives merchandise credit less service fees for accepted receipted returns after 30 days. After 60 days, accepted returns receive merchandise credit at the lowest selling price, under the late-return rules.

Burlington does not publish the service-fee amount or a final cutoff for late returns. Treat day 30 as the deadline for a refund to your card. Under the standard policy, accepted returns after that get merchandise credit, and after day 60 that credit is valued at the lowest selling price. For eligible loyalty returns on days 31–45, confirm tender and fees first. These are conditional late-credit routes, not a 60-day return window, and verification and refusal discretion still apply.

Is there a Burlington holiday return extension for 2026?

As of October 28, 2026, Burlington had not published a 2026 holiday return extension. Unofficial guides quote seasonal dates that the official material does not support.

The 2025 Holiday Bonus Card terms describe an expired gift-card promotion, not a return extension. Assume 30 days for gifts bought now; check the receipt and return-policy page again in December.

What Condition Do Burlington Returns Need to Be In?

Burlington requires general merchandise to be new, unused, unwashed and in its original packaging, per its return policy. The general policy does not separately specify price tags, accessories or unopened seals.

Keep tags attached anyway as a precaution, and don’t assume opened goods will be accepted just because the policy says nothing about seals. Meeting the condition rule still doesn’t guarantee approval.

Returning to Burlington Without a Receipt

Burlington permits approved general returns without a receipt for merchandise credit at the lowest selling price, with photo ID. The policy’s accepted IDs are:

  • Driver’s license
  • State-issued non-driver ID
  • Passport
  • Military ID

Burlington does not explain the location or reference period used to determine that price, or publish a no-receipt count or dollar cap. Credit may therefore differ from what you paid; ask about the amount before proceeding.

All returns undergo third-party verification and system approval. Burlington may limit or refuse refunds and may record ID information and return history where law permits. Compare Ross’ no-receipt return rules if you also lost a receipt there. Jewelry Counter items have no no-receipt route (see below).

Do e-receipts or loyalty receipt-free returns replace a receipt?

Not reliably. Members can get e-receipts at participating locations, but Burlington publishes no lookup method, refund value or payment form for its advertised receipt-free returns, so don’t count on a full card refund without a receipt; full program benefits require marketing email opt-in. The detailed terms let members choose electronic or printed receipts for sale/return transactions; the first member transaction provides both. E-receipts exclude completed layaways and may be unavailable at some locations.

The loyalty page advertises receipt-free returns; gift-receipt handling and lookup by payment card or bank statement are also unspecified. Keep the paper receipt or opt into e-receipts. Jewelry Counter items still need the original receipt.

Burlington Jewelry Counter Returns Have Stricter Rules

Burlington Jewelry Counter returns require the original receipt and original store, even though general merchandise has a no-receipt route. The Jewelry Counter policy requires:

  • Original receipt dated within 30 days, or 45 for loyalty members where the extension is offered; confirm locally.
  • Return to the original purchase store.
  • Valid government-issued photo ID, including with a receipt.
  • New, unused merchandise in original packaging, with Home Removal Tags attached.
  • Refund to the original payment form; cash for debit transactions using a PIN.
  • The same receipt, timing, store, condition and ID rules for exchanges.

Jewelry Counter items cannot go on layaway. General no-receipt advice does not apply here, so identify the purchase category before gathering documents for the trip.

How to Return an Item to a Burlington Store

Burlington supports in-store merchandise returns. Use these five steps to check eligibility and confirm the refund outcome before processing:

  1. Check the purchase date. Compare the receipt with the standard 30-day period; confirm any select-store 45-day loyalty benefit. Establish the applicable window first. Avoid treating a late-credit route as extra time for a card refund.
  2. Check the item and packaging. Confirm new, unused, unwashed condition and original packaging under the return policy. For jewelry, check attached Home Removal Tags too. Avoid assuming a receipt makes used merchandise eligible.
  3. Gather proof and ID. Bring the original receipt or available e-receipt, accepted photo ID and, as a precaution, the payment card used. Check that the receipt matches the purchase. Jewelry needs its original receipt; do not rely on a bank statement as a documented substitute.
  4. Choose the store. Use Find a Store. General cross-store acceptance is unpublished: use the purchase store or call ahead. Confirm the destination before traveling; jewelry must go to its original store.
  5. Confirm the result at the register. Expect verification and approval; ask the associate to identify the refund amount, destination and deductions. Check the return receipt before leaving. Avoid assuming merchandise credit will later become a card refund.

For unresolved questions, contact Burlington at 855-355-2875. The loyalty terms list Monday–Friday, 9 a.m.–6 p.m. EST, and the contact page says customer service is closed on Easter, Thanksgiving and Christmas.

Can you return Burlington purchases by mail or online?

Burlington’s help pages do not publish a merchandise mail-return or online-return route. That doesn’t mean mail returns are banned; ask Burlington before sending anything.

Shipping-charge refunds and return postage are unspecified, as are marketplace or third-party merchandise rules. The verified online channel is Buyatab’s separate digital gift-card storefront. Shoppers comparing mail-back options can read Nordstrom Rack’s return guide.

Where Does Your Burlington Refund Go?

Burlington’s general rule is the original payment form for eligible receipted returns within 30 days, with payment-specific exceptions. Late and no-receipt routes instead provide merchandise credit.

Burlington refund destination by payment type

Paid with / return situation Refund goes to Source
Credit card Original card Return Credits
PIN debit Cash Return Credits

Burlington gift card only New merchandise credit card Gift Cards FAQ
Credit card plus Burlington gift card Credit card first, up to its original charge; remainder as merchandise credit Gift Cards FAQ
No receipt / accepted late return Merchandise credit; applicable valuation and fees apply Return Policy
Afterpay / Klarna Ask the applicable provider; see below BNPL help

Example: Assume an approved full return of an $80 purchase paid $50 by credit card and $30 by Burlington gift card, with no deductions. Burlington refunds $50 to the credit card and issues the remaining $30 as merchandise credit.

For promotional bonus cards or discounts, Burlington’s terms base the refund on the prorated amount after allocating the benefit across qualifying items.

Gift cards, Afterpay and Klarna

Burlington gift cards cannot be redeemed for cash except where state law requires it. Its gift-card terms also say lost or stolen cards are not replaced.

Digital gift cards purchased through Buyatab are final sale unless law provides otherwise. For a nonworking code, Buyatab’s terms describe replacement up to the verified remaining balance; contact burlington@buyatab.com or 1-877-773-0965.

For Afterpay or Klarna refunds, Burlington directs shoppers to the applicable provider through its BNPL help page. Burlington’s BNPL page says Puerto Rico stores offer Klarna only. Installment adjustments and payment pauses are not published by Burlington; check with the provider before changing payments.

How Long Does a Burlington Refund Take?

Burlington does not publish a refund-processing time or a bank/card posting time. The return deadline does not tell you when money will appear in an account.

Clock Published timing Action
1. Return window 30 days from purchase; 45 at select loyalty stores Bring the merchandise in within the applicable window
2. Burlington processing/issuance Not published Keep the return receipt
3. Bank/card posting Not published Check the account statement

PIN-debit refunds are cash, so no account-posting wait applies to those refunds. If a refund is missing, check the return receipt and statement, then call Burlington customer service at 855-355-2875 or your card issuer.

Burlington Layaway Returns and Fees

Burlington refunds layaway deposits, payments and returned layaway merchandise as merchandise credit less service fees, with valid photo ID required. The layaway policy normally charges a $5 nonrefundable service fee per contract, plus $10 for cancellation or failure to complete on time. Fees may be taxed.

Burlington lists these exceptions in its own layaway terms:

Location Published exception
Maryland $1 service fee; cancellation fee is $10 or 10%, whichever is less; cancellation within 14 days has no additional fee
Ohio / Rhode Island Cancellation fee is $10 or 10%, whichever is less; cancellation within 7 days has no service or cancellation fee

The percentage base is not defined; ask the store for the calculation. These are Burlington’s own terms, not a summary of state law. Don’t use these layaway fees to estimate the ordinary late-return service fee, which Burlington doesn’t publish.

Food, wall art, rugs, lamps, furniture and Jewelry Counter items cannot go on layaway. Those limits are not general return bans; exchanges and final-sale rules need separate checks.

Exchanges and Items Burlington Won’t Take Back

Burlington’s general exchange procedure and category exclusions are not fully published. Use the confirmed category rules rather than assuming a swap or a blanket return ban.

Can you exchange an item at Burlington?

Burlington’s general policy does not describe a direct-exchange procedure. The Jewelry Counter policy explicitly mentions exchanges under its receipt, timing, original-store and ID requirements.

For general merchandise, plan for a return and repurchase unless the store offers a swap; ask about availability and price before proceeding. Asking for an exchange doesn’t waive the condition rules.

Final-sale and excluded items

Buyatab digital gift cards are confirmed final sale under that seller’s agreement. Burlington’s general return pages do not publish a blanket final-sale list for clearance, swimwear, undergarments, cosmetics, food, baby gear or custom goods.

Missing exclusions do not guarantee acceptance. General merchandise must still satisfy the new, unused, unwashed and original-packaging rule; ask the store about a specific item.

Damaged, Defective or Recalled Burlington Items

Burlington does not publish a separate retailer-wide damaged or defective-item procedure. Check its Product Recalls and Safety Notices for the product’s individual notice and instructions.

The FTC’s warranty guidance advises contacting the seller, then the manufacturer if unresolved, and checking the warranty. A repair may come before a refund, so a defect doesn’t guarantee money back from Burlington. The FTC Cooling-Off Rule does not add a three-day cancellation right to ordinary store purchases.

Burlington’s published pages don’t settle processing times, late-fee amounts or a particular store’s approval decision. Read how we check retailer policies for our evidence approach, then use the checks below before traveling.

Burlington Store Return Policy Mistakes to Avoid

Burlington store return policy decisions depend on timing, proof and payment type. Avoid these assumptions:

  • Waiting until day 31 for a card refund: accepted late receipted returns receive credit less service fees; loyalty days 31–45 need confirmation.
  • Assuming every store offers 45 days: the loyalty terms say select stores.
  • Taking jewelry elsewhere or without its receipt: Jewelry Counter returns require the original store and receipt.
  • Expecting cash for every card purchase: the published cash exception is debit transactions using a PIN.
  • Counting on receipt-free marketing for a full refund: lookup details, value and payment form are unpublished.
  • Trusting unofficial holiday dates: check Burlington’s policy and receipt for an announced extension.

FAQ

Does Burlington charge a restocking fee?

Burlington’s return policy does not list a restocking fee, so a blanket promise of free returns is unsupported. Accepted receipted returns after 30 days carry service-fee deductions, but the amount is unpublished. Ask the store about the deduction before processing; layaway has its own separate published fees.

Can I return a Burlington item to a different store?

Burlington’s general policy does not say whether ordinary merchandise can go to any location. Return to the purchase store or call your intended location first. Jewelry Counter merchandise must go back to the original store, with the original receipt and valid government-issued photo ID.

Does the Burlington credit card extend the return window?

Burlington credit-card status alone doesn’t extend returns. Cardholders need Loyalty Program enrollment for the select-store 45-day benefit; full benefits also require staying opted in to its marketing emails. Ask an associate to confirm eligibility. Return-related reward-point or certificate reversals are not specified in Burlington’s published terms.

Can Burlington refuse my return?

Burlington may limit or refuse refunds, and all returns require third-party verification and system approval. ID information and return history may be recorded where law permits. The policy does not publish a maximum no-receipt return count or dollar cap; bringing a receipt does not guarantee approval.

How is my refund calculated if I used a promotional bonus card?

Burlington bases the refund on the prorated amount after the promotional bonus-card benefit or discount is allocated across qualifying items. That can differ from the item’s undiscounted ticket price. Ask the associate to explain the allocation for your returned item before assuming the full ticket amount will be refunded.

Can I return a Burlington gift card I bought online?

Burlington gift cards purchased through its authorized Buyatab storefront are final sale, with no return or cancellation unless law provides otherwise. A nonworking code is a separate support issue: contact Buyatab at burlington@buyatab.com or 1-877-773-0965. Its terms describe replacement up to the verified remaining balance.
