Marshalls Return Policy: 30 vs 40 Days, No Receipt & Holiday Dates

The Marshalls return policy gives US store purchases 30 days from purchase and marshalls.com orders 40 days from the order date, usually refunding the original payment with a receipt. Store returns are free; standard mail returns deduct $11.99 per package. Approved no-receipt store returns get merchandise credit with photo ID.

Marshalls returns: key facts

  • Store purchases have 30 days from purchase with a receipt; accepted later returns receive merchandise credit.
  • The main online policy allows 40 days from the order date; standard mailed returns must reach the warehouse within that period.
  • Eligible store returns are free; mail deducts $11.99 per package unless the merchandise is defective.
  • Approved returns without a receipt receive merchandise credit in store with government-issued photo ID; no-receipt mail refunds are prohibited.
  • Purchases from October 4–December 24, 2026 have holiday deadlines of January 25, 2027 for store purchases and February 4, 2027 for online purchases.

The store policy and online policy cover US Marshalls stores and marshalls.com. Other TJX stores do not accept Marshalls returns. For other retailers, browse our US store return guides.

How Long Do You Have to Return Something to Marshalls?

Marshalls’ main policies allow 30 days from purchase for store buys and 40 days from the order date for online orders, with the online wording conflict explained below. Marshalls does not publish calendar-versus-business-day counting, cutoff times or weekend grace; return a few days early.

For off-price comparisons, see how Burlington handles returns. At Marshalls, both the starting date and the required return action depend on the purchase channel.

Store purchases: 30 days from the purchase date

Marshalls requires eligible merchandise back in a Marshalls store within 30 days of purchase for a standard receipted refund. A valid register receipt supports repayment to the original payment method under the store-purchase policy; merely starting a request does not complete the return.

Online orders: 40 days, and the 30-day wording

Marshalls’ online-purchase policy gives 40 days from the order date, but its My Orders and Gift Card Refunds help pages still word it as 30 days from the order date. Treat day 30 as your target, especially for mail, and check your shipping confirmation for a different restriction or ask customer service for the answer for your order.

Under the main policy, mailed goods must arrive at the warehouse within 40 days for an eligible original-payment refund. Starting a return or dropping off the package within that period is insufficient; late receipted arrivals receive digital merchandise credit.

What happens after the return window closes?

Marshalls gives merchandise credit for accepted store purchases returned after 30 days. Accepted late receipted online returns receive digital credit by mail or physical credit in store under the online policy.

Marshalls publishes no maximum age for these returns, so credit is not a promise of acceptance indefinitely. Verification can limit or decline returns even with a receipt; check whether the holiday extension applies before treating a purchase as late.

Marshalls Holiday Return Policy 2026

Marshalls purchases made October 4, 2026 through December 24, 2026 qualify for different extended deadlines: January 25, 2027 for store purchases and February 4, 2027 for online purchases, including eligible store returns of online orders. The holiday notices retain all other standard terms, including fees, proof and category restrictions; gift returns with a receipt receive store credit.

Normal policy resumes for purchases beginning December 26, 2026. Marshalls does not explain December 25 online orders; if the extension matters, order by December 24 rather than relying on December 25 eligibility.

For mail, plan for arrival by February 4, 2027. That is the conservative reading of the standard arrival rule and retained terms: the holiday notice does not separately define arrival, postmark or initiation.

Example: Assume an eligible item bought November 15, 2026, with a receipt and no special restriction. A store purchase is returnable through January 25, 2027; an online purchase through February 4, 2027, with arrival by then the conservative mail plan. These are published seasonal endpoints, not calculated standard deadlines.

Shoppers comparing online-return options can also consult Nordstrom Rack’s return policy. At Marshalls, the extension does not remove receipt requirements.

Can You Return to Marshalls Without a Receipt?

Yes, Marshalls can approve a return without a receipt in store for merchandise credit, with valid government-issued photo ID, your name, address and signature. The store policy makes approval subject to verification, and the online policy prohibits no-receipt refunds by mail.

Marshalls does not publish the credit valuation formula or a numerical return allowance. Ask what credit would be issued before proceeding; do not assume the remembered purchase price or a particular current-price formula. ID does not guarantee acceptance.

Shoppers using another off-price chain can compare Ross’s return rules. Before accepting a no-receipt outcome at Marshalls, look for supported paperless proof.

Proof that works instead of a paper receipt

Marshalls accepts email receipts from participating stores like paper receipts. For online orders, the FAQ lists the shipping confirmation on paper or phone, or the barcode/order number in account or guest order details; a printed packing slip also supports receipted treatment.

Use Track My Order with your order number and shipping ZIP to retrieve guest order details. Online orders returned in store and all no-receipt returns require a signature.

Marshalls does not publish lost store-receipt recovery by payment card, phone number or TJX Rewards account. The phone lookup at checkout finds the email address for e-receipts; Marshalls does not describe it as a way to recover a lost receipt, so use an existing e-receipt or ask the store.

Where can you use Marshalls merchandise credit?

Marshalls’ current FAQ says regular merchandise credit works at T.J. Maxx, Marshalls, Sierra, HomeGoods and Homesense stores, and at tjmaxx.com, marshalls.com and sierra.com. Credit cannot be exchanged for cash.

For no-receipt credit, plan to spend it in a store with the same photo ID used when it was issued. Marshalls’ undated return-policy update bars its online use; the current FAQ describes regular credit without confirming whether no-receipt credit is included. Do not assume online or sister-brand redemption of no-receipt credit. Spending regular credit at a sister brand does not authorize returning Marshalls goods there.

How to Return a Marshalls Purchase

Choose the route by where you bought the item, check restrictions, gather proof and keep required tags attached. Store purchases must return to a Marshalls store; eligible online purchases can use a store or mail under the return instructions.

Returning in a Marshalls store

  1. Check eligibility. For online purchases, review the store-route exclusions below before choosing a location in the Store Locator. Store purchases cannot be mailed back.
  2. Bring proof. Take your receipt, e-receipt, shipping confirmation or online order-details barcode. Retrieve guest details through Track My Order if needed.
  3. Bring original plastic bags for online items. The policy says they speed things up; Marshalls’ FAQ lists them among what you need.
  4. Sign at the register if asked. Online orders returned in store and no-receipt returns require a signature; check that the refund or credit matches your payment/proof situation before leaving.

Eligible store returns are free, but the money outcome can differ from mailing an online order.

Returning an online order by mail

  1. Start through Easy Returns. Gift returns use the gift-return portal. Have receipted documentation; no-receipt mail refunds are prohibited.
  2. Select an offered carrier. Marshalls does not publish a guaranteed carrier list, pickup service or general self-paid-label alternative; follow the options for your order.
  3. Prepare the package. Print the packing slip for inside and label for outside, or use the offered printerless QR/carrier-printing route. Include original plastic item packaging.
  4. Drop off with the selected carrier. Allow for warehouse arrival within the applicable period; starting or mailing within the standard window alone is insufficient.

Consolidate eligible items where permitted to avoid multiple package deductions; use customer service if the order blocks the route.

Oversized items such as rugs and accent chairs

Marshalls directs oversized shipments restricted in the portal to TJX Customer Service: 1-833-888-0776 or ecommercecustomerservice@tjx.com, according to its Returns hub. Ask for the mail-return instructions before arranging shipment.

Original shipping charges and oversized shipping surcharges are non-refundable under the standard policy. No separate oversized-return tariff is published; confirm the route and cost rather than assuming ordinary package arrangements.

Which online items can’t be returned to a store?

Marshalls’ online policy excludes these online purchases from in-store returns:

  • Items over $1,000.
  • Handbags over $499.99.
  • Footwear over $499.99.
  • Long occasion gowns.
  • Luggage sets.

A handbag or pair of shoes priced at exactly $499.99 is not caught by the price threshold, though other restrictions still apply. These are store-route exclusions, not automatic final-sale designations. Check the product page, shipping confirmation and portal, or contact customer service, for mail eligibility before comparing fees.

Does Marshalls Charge for Returns?

Marshalls charges $0 for eligible store returns and deducts $11.99 per mailed return package from the refund or merchandise credit. Its online policy and FAQ exempt defective merchandise from that mail deduction.

Route Fee Notes
Eligible Marshalls store return Free Payment exceptions can produce credit
Standard online return by mail $11.99 per package Deducted from refund or merchandise credit
Defective online merchandise by mail $11.99 deduction does not apply Exception workflow: Not published; contact customer service

Marshalls’ return pages do not list a restocking fee. Standard original shipping/handling charges and oversized shipping surcharges are non-refundable; reimbursement of original delivery charges for defective or wrong-item shipments is not specified. Ask customer service before shipping a problem item.

Example: Assume two eligible, nondefective items can share one package. One package deducts $11.99; two separate packages deduct $23.98. Consolidating saves $11.99 in return fees, without changing item eligibility.

What Marshalls Won’t Take Back

Marshalls excludes used, worn or unsellable merchandise from standard returns; most eligible merchandise must be unwashed, unused and appropriately tagged under the Returns overview. Additional rules include:

  • Store purchases: swimwear and intimate apparel need tickets properly attached.
  • Online purchases: additional security tags must remain attached and intact.
  • Online beauty: opened or tampered-with beauty items are excluded.
  • Gift cards: not eligible for return.
  • Online item restrictions: final-sale or additional restrictions can appear on the product page and shipping confirmation.

The online policy does not make every clearance item final sale. Blanket rules for clearance, opened electronics or missing accessories are not published; check item-level restrictions and ask Marshalls rather than assuming acceptance. A separate store-purchase beauty rule is also unpublished. Verification still applies to otherwise eligible returns, including when a receipt is available. Marshalls’ undated return-policy update says trying an item on is not wearing it, but items failing condition checks may be sent back at your expense; current policies don’t repeat this, so ask before mailing a borderline item.

When Will You Get Your Marshalls Refund?

Marshalls says in-store refunds for online purchases are issued on the spot; bank posting may take a few days. For qualifying mailed online returns, its refund-processing guidance gives 10–14 business days after receipt, in most cases, depending on your bank or billing cycle.

Stage In store By mail
Return window Store purchase: 30 days from purchase; online: main policy’s 40 days from order, with 30-day conflict above; holiday exceptions apply Standard warehouse arrival within 40 days from order under main policy; conflict and holiday qualifications above
Retailer processing Online orders: issued on the spot; separate store-purchase timing: Not published Not published separately
Bank/provider posting Online orders: a few days; exact range: Not published Included in qualified 10–14-business-day account-credit estimate; separate duration: Not published

Do not add another bank interval to the mail estimate. Mailed merchandise credit is issued after receipt, without a separate published issuance deadline. Payment type determines whether that outcome is money or credit.

Gift receipts, gift cards, PayPal and Rewards purchases

Marshalls’ online refund rules distinguish proof and payment method:

Payment or proof In store By mail for online orders
Ordinary payment, valid receipt, on time Original payment if eligible Original payment if eligible, less standard fee
Gift receipt Store purchase: merchandise credit; online purchase: physical merchandise credit Physical merchandise credit
Online gift-card payment, including part-payment Physical merchandise credit under FAQ Digital merchandise credit under FAQ
Online Rewards Certificate payment Physical merchandise credit Digital merchandise credit
Online PayPal payment Physical merchandise credit PayPal refund less $11.99, unless defective

Marshalls does not publish the allocation of mixed gift-card/payment refunds; ask before assuming a cash/card portion. The Gift Card Refunds page words gift returns and refunds after 30 days as gift-card credit, whereas the dedicated policy separates 40 days and credit formats. Use the earlier target and confirm your order’s treatment with customer service; gift returns produce credit on both pages.

Under TJX Rewards terms, returns deduct points; Rewards-card purchases are credited to the same account subject to the return policy. A return after a certificate has been issued can leave a negative points balance, as Digital Rewards Certificates help explains; no longer return window or fee waiver is published. PayPal help confirms the store-credit versus PayPal-refund trade-off, which matters when considering a replacement purchase.

Can You Exchange an Item at Marshalls?

Marshalls does not offer exchanges for online orders, including through a store, because inventory changes, according to its online policy. Return the item and buy again if suitable stock is available; neither availability nor the same price is guaranteed.

Current store-purchase pages do not set out complete exchange terms. Keep the receipt and ask the store; do not assume the online prohibition also bans store-purchase exchanges. For a defective item, contact Marshalls about the problem before arranging a replacement purchase.

Damaged or Defective Marshalls Items and Your Rights

Marshalls exempts defective online merchandise from the $11.99 mail deduction. Its Terms of Use point product problems toward the manufacturer/supplier warranty or a return under Marshalls’ policy, without promising a particular warranty remedy.

Marshalls does not publish a complete defect procedure, reporting deadline, photo checklist, replacement guarantee or defective-item original-delivery refund rule. Contact customer service first: 1-833-888-0776 for online orders or 1-888-627-7425 for store purchases, Monday–Friday, 9 AM–6 PM EST, subject to holiday/event changes.

Separate legal protections may apply. The FTC’s Cooling-Off Rule adds no three-day cancellation period to ordinary store or entirely online purchases. The FTC’s warranty guidance explains that implied warranties depend on state law, permitted “as is” exclusions can matter, and repair may precede a refund.

For an unresolved problem, FTC complaint guidance recommends collecting purchase and complaint records, contacting the seller/manufacturer and seeking outside help from consumer protection authorities. FTC reports do not resolve individual complaints. This guide covers public policies; order-specific portal screens were unavailable, so confirm item-specific instructions before acting on a general rule.

Marshalls Return Policy Mistakes to Avoid

  • Mailing on day 39: the standard rule measures warehouse arrival; send earlier and use the stricter 30-day target while wording conflicts remain.
  • Splitting eligible items unnecessarily: two packages incur two $11.99 deductions; consolidate where permitted.
  • Taking online handbags or footwear over $499.99 to a store: check mail eligibility instead.
  • Returning PayPal purchases in store when you want PayPal funds: eligible mail returns use PayPal; store returns produce physical merchandise credit.
  • Visiting T.J. Maxx or HomeGoods with Marshalls goods: return them to Marshalls.
  • Removing required tags: keep online security tags intact and store swimwear/intimate-apparel tickets attached.

FAQ

Can I return Marshalls items to T.J. Maxx or HomeGoods?

No. Marshalls purchases must use the Marshalls return routes; T.J. Maxx and HomeGoods do not accept them. Regular merchandise credit can be spent at those sister-brand stores under the current FAQ, but spending credit is a different transaction from returning merchandise. Store purchases also cannot go back by mail.

Can I return opened makeup to Marshalls?

Marshalls excludes opened or tampered-with beauty items under its online-purchase policy. The store-purchase policy does not publish an equally specific beauty rule, so ask the store before relying on acceptance. General condition requirements and refund verification still apply; a receipt alone does not guarantee that an opened product qualifies.

Do TJX Rewards cardholders get a longer return window?

Marshalls does not publish an extended US return window or return-fee waiver for TJX Rewards cardholders. Follow the relevant purchase-channel and seasonal rules. Returned purchases deduct Rewards points, and a return after a certificate has been issued can leave a negative points balance.

Does free shipping on my order mean free returns?

No. A delivery promotion does not remove Marshalls’ standard $11.99 deduction per mailed return package; defective merchandise is exempt from that deduction. Eligible store returns are free. Original shipping charges and oversized shipping surcharges are non-refundable under the standard policy, separately from the return-package fee.

Can Marshalls refuse a return even with a receipt?

Yes. Marshalls says its verification systems can limit or decline returns, including receipted returns. Merchandise must also meet applicable condition and item restrictions. The retailer publishes no numerical allowance guaranteeing approval, so the Marshalls return policy should not be read as an unlimited-return promise, even when you retain proof.
