IKEA Return Policy: 365 vs 180 Days, No Receipt and Refunds
IKEA’s US return policy allows 365 days for new, unopened products and 180 days for opened ones, with proof of purchase and government photo ID; refunds go to the original payment method. Store returns are free, while parcels and pickups usually cost extra, and mattresses get one exchange within 90 days of purchase instead of an ordinary refund.
Key facts
- IKEA allows 365 days for new, unopened goods and 180 for opened goods; mail-return help counts from purchase.
- Bring proof and government photo ID. Card-receipt lookup needs the store, date, amount, last four card digits and the card present.
- Store returns are free; parcel shipping is normally buyer-paid, pickup costs the area’s delivery fee, and original shipping is not refunded.
- Mattresses get one exchange within 90 days of purchase; collection and replacement delivery are free if IKEA Home Delivery delivered the original.
- The main policy excludes plants, cut fabric, custom countertops and As-is goods; some help answers word the overlapping categories differently.
These IKEA return policies cover purchases from IKEA US stores, IKEA remote shopping and ikea.com/us; IKEA-branded items bought on Amazon or other third-party sites are outside them. Compare other retailers in our US store return guides.

How Long Do You Have to Return Something to IKEA?
365 days for new, unopened products; 180 days for opened products, with proof and subject to exclusions, are IKEA’s standard windows. Opening a product moves it to the 180-day window, but opened is not the same as used: used furniture faces stricter condition rules, covered below.
IKEA does not define calendar versus business days or inclusive counting. Nor does IKEA publish whether initiation, posting, carrier scanning or arrival must happen inside the window. Return several days early: get the item to a store or into FedEx’s hands well before the deadline, rather than relying on last-day registration.
Example: Assume an ordinary, opened US-purchased bookcase is about 200 days past purchase, with no defect claim. The bookcase is outside the 180-day window; the unopened category’s 365 days do not apply. A store exception is discretionary.
Does the clock start at purchase or delivery?
Purchase is the reference event stated in IKEA’s mail-return help. IKEA publishes no delivery-date restart or delayed-delivery exception for the ordinary window, so count delivered orders from purchase when planning a return.
Is there a 2026 holiday return extension?
No. IKEA US had published no 2026 holiday or seasonal return extension as of October 28, 2026, so the standard 365-day unopened and 180-day opened windows apply, subject to exclusions. A 2025 notice or another country’s rules do not carry over; StoreReturners will update this page if IKEA announces one.
Opened, Used and Assembled IKEA Furniture
IKEA’s main policy refuses ordinary refunds or exchanges for modified, dirty, stained or damaged goods. Opened or assembled products do not need original packaging, but assembled returns need all pieces, hardware and assembly manuals. A separate universal tag-retention rule is not published; keep labels and documentation while deciding.
IKEA’s assembled-furniture help requires new, unused condition and rejects used or scratched items. Refund help words eligibility differently, describing an IKEA refund card for moderately used products. Assume used furniture is not returnable, keep potential returns new, and ask IKEA before transporting used goods; the store decides after assessment.
Can you return assembled IKEA furniture?
Yes: IKEA accepts assembled furniture at a store when it meets the policy and is new and unused. Assembly alone does not require dismantling for a store return. Home pickup requires disassembly and packing, so choose the route before preparing the furniture and paperwork.
What to Bring: Receipt, Photo ID and Payment Card
IKEA’s return instructions require proof of purchase and valid government-issued photo ID; an online order confirmation is accepted proof. Bring the original payment card for an exchange and for a recovered card-receipt return.
IKEA says it retains ID information in a company-wide database for return authorization. ID does not replace purchase evidence; if the receipt is missing, try recovering proof before leaving home.
Can You Return to IKEA Without a Receipt?
Sometimes, if IKEA can verify the purchase. IKEA’s lost-receipt help gives three ways to recover evidence:
- Card or digital payment: supply the store, purchase date, transaction amount and last four card digits. IKEA may find the transaction; lookup is not guaranteed. If found, the refund goes to the original payment method and the card must be present.
- IKEA Family history: check your purchase history if your member number was used at checkout.
- Online purchase: use the order confirmation as proof.
IKEA does not publish a refund or lowest-price-credit entitlement when no receipt or verifiable purchase can be found, including a lost cash receipt. ID alone is not a documented substitute. Nor is a fallback published for a lost, replaced or closed original card. Gather the four details and ask Customer Support about missing evidence before traveling.
Returning an IKEA gift
IKEA offers gift receipts on request at in-store checkout. For a duplicate registry gift, use the order number in the registry email under the standard gift-return instructions. Non-registry gifts follow the ordinary policy too.
The gift-receipt refund destination is not published. Confirm it with IKEA before assuming the recipient will get cash or a refund card.
How to Return to IKEA: Store, FedEx or Home Pickup
IKEA offers store returns, support-arranged FedEx parcels and home pickup where available. Getting the item to a store avoids parcel or pickup charges. Keep proof, ID and any required card ready. IKEA’s online returns page is the official entry point; IKEA does not publish whether it issues a label.
Step-by-step at an IKEA store
- Check eligibility: match the item’s condition and category to the window. Assembled furniture must be complete with hardware and manuals.
- Gather documents: bring proof, government photo ID and the original payment card where required. Confirm you have evidence before loading furniture.
- Find a return location: use the IKEA store locator. IKEA says you can return to a different US store from the one you bought at. Planning Studios and Pick Up Points do not accept returns, and IKEA’s delivery terms direct shoppers whose nearest location is IKEA Queens to Brooklyn.
- Join the return queue: take store or online purchases to the Exchanges & returns desk. IKEA assesses condition before approving the refund.
- Confirm the refund: standard refunds go to the original payment method. Store returns are free, but original shipping is not refunded.
Mailing a small item with FedEx
- Arrange the return: contact IKEA Customer Support; small store-bought items can also use this route. Confirm shipping instructions and charges before dispatch. Confirm which store the parcel should go to.
- Prepare the parcel: follow support’s directions. Portal fields, label generation, label price and parcel size/weight limits are not published in the readable guidance; ask support rather than assuming a self-service label exists.
- Drop off at FedEx: IKEA estimates you will receive reimbursement about two weeks after the parcel reaches the store, so allow for transit time as well.
IKEA’s mail help says a shipping charge may apply. The delivery terms make return shipping buyer-paid unless pieces were missing or the product was damaged before delivery.
IKEA’s FAQ also describes mailing small items to a store with a packing slip and receipt/order-confirmation copy. Its linked form redirected to the IKEA homepage when checked on October 28, 2026. Use support-arranged FedEx rather than relying on that paperwork link.
Home pickup for large furniture
- Request availability and a quote: contact Customer Support; service varies by area. Pickup pricing equals the area’s delivery fee for the order, based on order size, location and delivery type.
- Disassemble and package every item: IKEA cannot perform truck pickup without this preparation and must reschedule. Confirm all pieces and hardware are packed.
- Stage the return: IKEA asks for items on a covered porch, in a garage or on a doorstep. Confirm the arrangement with support before the scheduled pickup.
IKEA gives $59 as a “most likely” example, not a national minimum or fixed fee. Billing per item/order/visit, upfront versus refund deduction, and rescheduling charges are not published; ask for those details with the quote.
Exchanging an IKEA product
IKEA describes an ordinary exchange as a return followed by a new purchase. Bring the item, photo ID, receipt or order confirmation and original card. Separate exchange fees and stock holds are not published, so confirm replacement availability and cost before traveling. Mattresses have their own exchange terms below.
How Much Does an IKEA Return Cost?
$0 for a store return is the rule in IKEA’s Shipping and Delivery Terms. Parcel and pickup costs depend on the route and reason:
| Route/charge | Who pays | Notes | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Store return | Free | Eligible returns brought to a store | Delivery terms |
| FedEx parcel | Buyer normally pays | Waived for missing pieces or pre-delivery damage | Delivery terms; mail help |
| Home pickup | Buyer pays local delivery-equivalent fee | Order size, location and type determine quote | Pickup help |
| Original shipping | Not refunded | After-shipment cancellation refunds product cost, not shipping | Delivery terms |
| Restocking fee | Not published | No separately named fee or universal no-fee promise | Reviewed policy and delivery terms |
Before shipment, IKEA offers cancellation through order management; use the contact and order-support page. A refund of original delivery charges for faulty, wrong or missing goods is not published: ask specifically about outbound delivery, separately from return shipping.
If the bulky item came from Home Depot rather than IKEA, see our Home Depot return-policy guide.
When Will You Get Your IKEA Refund?
IKEA’s FAQ says refunds typically process in 5–7 business days, without defining the starting point. Mail-return help instead estimates about two weeks after arrival at the store. Neither establishes a separate bank-posting timetable.
| Clock | Published rule or estimate | Limit |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Return window | 365 days unopened; 180 opened | Deadline action is not published |
| 2. IKEA processing | Not published as a separate period; approval follows condition assessment | Overall estimates below have different starting points |
| 3. Bank/card posting | Not published | No separate number after IKEA issues the refund |
IKEA’s two published overall estimates are the FAQ’s 5–7 business days to the original payment method (no stated start) and, for mailed returns, receiving reimbursement about two weeks after the parcel reaches the store.
These estimates describe different situations: do not add them together. Ask support about your return’s status rather than calculating a combined payment date.
Refunds normally go to the original payment method; refund help also offers an IKEA refund card if preferred. Only the net receipt price is refunded. If you keep a promotional item from the transaction, its value is deducted.
Example: Assume an accepted return has a $100 net merchandise price and a $20 promotional item from the same transaction that you keep. The merchandise refund is $100 − $20 = $80, before tax adjustments; original shipping remains a separate cost.
How returns affect IKEA Family points and rewards
IKEA Family terms deduct earned points for refunded items, potentially making the balance negative. A lower-value exchange adjusts points; an equal-value exchange does not deduct them. Points and reward vouchers used on a returned item are not reinstated, and the refund remains the net receipt price.
IKEA Family and IKEA Business Network purchases follow the ordinary return policy, with no membership window extension specified; Family price protection is a separate benefit.
IKEA Mattress Returns: The 90-Day Exchange
IKEA mattresses do not qualify for an ordinary refund under the delivery terms. The “Love it or exchange it” policy allows one mattress-for-mattress exchange within 90 days of purchase, as confirmed by IKEA’s mattress answer, with a receipt and no dirt, marks or damage.
Pay the difference for a more expensive replacement; a cheaper replacement’s difference goes to an IKEA refund card. Example: Assume a qualifying, clean $300 mattress is exchanged once within the window for a $250 mattress, with comparable prices before taxes. The $50 difference goes to an IKEA refund card.
Collection and replacement delivery are free when IKEA Home Delivery delivered the original mattress. Confirm that qualifying delivery history when arranging the exchange.
The comfort policy covers new mattresses, excluding bed bases, slats and toppers. IKEA recommends at least a month to adjust; that is advice, not a mandatory waiting period. IKEA’s mattress help counts the 90 days from purchase; IKEA does not say how the days are counted, so arrange the exchange well before day 90.
If the mattress came from Costco rather than IKEA, see our Costco return-policy guide.
What IKEA Won’t Take Back
IKEA’s main policy excludes plants, custom countertops and As-is goods, including online As-is reservations according to As-is help. Two IKEA help answers word these categories differently, describing refund-card refunds, including the product-eligibility answer. Buy expecting no return; if already purchased, ask the desk or Customer Support before traveling. The store’s desk assessment determines the outcome. For an As-is purchase, IKEA’s As-is answer says selected items may qualify for its Buy Back & Resell service; that is a separate resale route, not a refund, and eligibility must be checked.
The excluded-products answer also lists the main exclusions. Other category distinctions are:
- Cut fabric: excluded, without the overlapping refund-card wording.
- Mattresses: exchange only under the comfort policy, rather than an ordinary refund.
- Discontinued products: returnable to a store if they meet the standard policy.
IKEA’s refund help lists food among returns refunded to a return card, but no US page sets out food-specific acceptance or condition rules, so ask about the item before traveling. IKEA publishes no separate electronics or appliance return window. Requests outside policy need physical store inspection and case-by-case approval; an exception is not promised.
Can you return IKEA products bought abroad?
Not reliably: IKEA’s US policy answer says foreign purchases cannot be returned, while the purchased-abroad answer words this differently and allows a refund card. Contact IKEA US or the store before traveling, and do not expect an original-card refund. The store’s answer governs your request.
IKEA items bought on Amazon or other sites
IKEA says it does not sell through Amazon or other third-party sites; those listings are unauthorized resellers. Return through the seller rather than assuming IKEA’s direct policy applies. For an Amazon purchase, consult our Amazon return-policy guide.
Damaged, Missing or Faulty IKEA Products
IKEA’s delivery terms ask shoppers to inspect deliveries and report missing, damaged or incorrect pieces within 48 hours to 1-888-888-4532. This is IKEA’s delivery-reporting procedure, separate from the 365/180-day change-of-mind windows.
- Record visible problems at delivery: for large deliveries, note packaging/product damage or missing merchandise. Signing without noting visible defects may affect replacement or refund handling.
- Use the damage route: missing and damaged-order help says to bring the damaged item or part and proof to a store, or the order confirmation for a missing item; alternatively call IKEA.
- Ask about parts and charges: replacement parts may avoid returning the whole item. Return shipping is waived for missing pieces or pre-delivery damage; an original-delivery-fee refund is not published, so ask separately.
What are your rights beyond IKEA’s return policy?
IKEA’s limited warranties are product-specific, generally start at purchase and require proof. IKEA assesses coverage and chooses repair or replacement; the conditions preserve legal rights. FTC warranty guidance advises contacting the seller first and explains that repair may precede a refund; implied-warranty rules vary by state.
The FTC Cooling-Off Rule does not give ordinary store or entirely online purchases a federal three-day return right. No nationwide defective-goods return deadline is established here.
IKEA’s help pages disagree on used goods, excluded categories and foreign purchases, so no single page gives a guaranteed answer. Follow the stricter reading and seek IKEA’s decision; see how we check retailer policies.
Mistakes to Avoid With IKEA Return Policies
- Applying 365 days to opened goods: the opened window is 180 days.
- Losing a cash receipt: no guaranteed refund or credit is documented when proof cannot be recovered.
- Leaving truck returns assembled: pickup cannot proceed and must be rescheduled.
- Keeping a promotional item: its value reduces the refund.
- Expecting a mattress refund: the comfort remedy is one exchange; free collection/redelivery depends on original IKEA Home Delivery.
- Choosing a Planning Studio or Pick Up Point: neither accepts returns.
- Delaying a damage report: IKEA asks for delivery problems within 48 hours.
FAQ
Do I need the original box to return something to IKEA?
No. IKEA’s US policy help says original packaging is not required for opened or assembled products. Condition and completeness still matter: assembled furniture needs all pieces, hardware and assembly manuals. For truck pickup, disassemble and package the return before collection; that route has different preparation requirements from store returns.
Does IKEA charge a restocking fee?
IKEA’s reviewed return pages and delivery terms do not name a universal restocking fee or promise that none exists. Store returns are explicitly free. Parcel shipping is normally buyer-paid, while pickup costs the area’s delivery-equivalent fee. Ask support for an itemized quote before arranging a paid return route.
Does IKEA keep my ID when I make a return?
IKEA says it retains information from government-issued photo ID in a company-wide database for return authorization. Bring valid government photo ID alongside purchase evidence, such as a receipt or online order confirmation. ID alone is not a documented replacement for a receipt or a purchase that IKEA can verify.
Can I return a discontinued IKEA product?
Yes. IKEA’s FAQ allows discontinued products to be returned to a store when they still meet the standard policy. Discontinuation does not remove the usual 365-day new/unopened or 180-day opened window, proof requirement or condition restrictions. Check eligibility before transporting a discontinued item, particularly assembled furniture or a category with exclusions.
Can I return items to an IKEA Planning Studio or Pick Up Point?
No. IKEA’s US return instructions exclude Planning Studios and Pick Up Points as return locations. Use the official store locator to choose a store that handles returns, then join the Exchanges & returns queue. For a small parcel or bulky item you cannot transport, ask Customer Support about FedEx or pickup.
