Menards Return Policy: 90 Days, Receipt Codes and Refunds

Menards’ US return policy refunds most store and MENARDS.COM purchases returned with a receipt within 90 days of purchase, usually to the original payment method. Later receipted returns receive in-store credit at the original price. Exceptions include 30-day gas-powered equipment returns, a one-year guarantee for perennials, trees and shrubs, and final-sale clearance.

The return policy for Menards in brief:

  • Eligible receipted returns within 90 days are refunded by payment type: cash to cash, card to the card (or a Merchandise Credit Check), check by receipt age, and gift card or coupon to in-store credit.
  • After 90 days, receipted returns get original-price in-store credit, subject to exceptions; no outer limit is published.
  • Receipt codes change eligibility: TD 30 days, ND 90, GP/SV 30 unused, MA 7 defective/90 unused, PG one year, BA final sale.
  • No-receipt returns require a driver’s license or state ID and may be refused; try the receipt kiosk first.
  • Online returns must be unused and complete. Return shipping is deducted unless defective; original shipping and processing fees stay nonrefundable.

How Long Do You Have to Return Something to Menards?

Menards generally allows 90 days from purchase for a receipted refund, with shorter or longer category windows. Menards does not specify calendar versus business days, day-zero counting, or a delivery/pickup reset for online orders.

Count from purchase and arrive a few days early. For shipped returns, Menards does not publish whether starting, shipping or warehouse receipt must happen by the deadline; request instructions and ship well inside the window. After 90 days, the refund form changes.

What Happens After 90 Days at Menards?

Menards gives original-purchase-price in-store credit for accepted receipted returns after 90 days, subject to category exclusions. No outer cutoff is published; return as early as possible rather than treating that omission as unlimited eligibility.

Example: Assume Menards accepts an ordinary, non-excluded $100 item after 90 days, with its receipt and no deductions. The result is $100 in-store credit.

Menards Receipt Codes: TD, ND and the Rest

Menards’ receipt codes identify the exceptions summarized above:

  • TD / ND: 30-/90-Day Over-the-Counter Exchange; no receipt means no refund, exchange or credit.
  • GP: gas-powered equipment restrictions.
  • SV: service items, including handheld gas tools and contractor paint sprayers.
  • MA: major appliances.
  • PG: plant guarantee.
  • BA: bargain area/clearance, final sale.
  • NR: nonreturnable items, including the opened-chemical remedy below.
  • SB: special orders.
  • HP: handling and packaging charges, which are not refunded.

Is There a Menards Holiday Return Extension for 2026?

No 2026 holiday extension, eligible purchase range or extended deadline was located in Menards’ published material. Keep receipts and ask the Service Desk before relying on an extension; past seasonal rules do not establish this year’s eligibility.

Gas-Powered Tools, Appliances and Plants

Menards gives these categories separate deadlines and remedies. Check the product code before using equipment or discarding packaging.

Can You Return a Mower or Generator After Adding Gas?

No: Menards’ GP rule excludes equipment that has been fueled. Eligible returns require a receipt, return within 30 days of purchase, unused condition, original packaging and no prior filling with gas.

GP includes mowers, snowthrowers, tillers, log splitters, chipper shredders, generators and pressure washers. Equipment failing those conditions goes to an authorized repair center; the customer pays unless warranty coverage applies. This is Menards’ own policy, not a legal requirement. Before buying elsewhere, compare Tractor Supply’s return rules for outdoor power equipment.

Handheld Gas Tools and Contractor Paint Sprayers

Menards’ SV route allows unused, originally packaged returns/exchanges within 30 days of purchase with a receipt. Initial failure qualifies for a new-item exchange within seven days of purchase. After seven days, use an authorized service center; repairs are customer-paid unless covered by warranty.

Major Appliances: 7 Days for Defects, 90 Days Unused

Menards’ MA rule allows manufacturing-defect returns/exchanges within seven days of purchase, or unused, originally packaged returns/exchanges within 90 days, with a receipt. Outside those conditions, contact the vendor about warranty coverage.

Before choosing a refrigerator or washer, compare Home Depot’s appliance return rules. For delivery damage, use the separate Whirlpool procedures below.

The One-Year Menards Plant Guarantee

Menards covers perennials, trees and shrubs for one year from purchase with a receipt, offering an exchange or in-store credit for the purchase price. Annuals are not named; ask before assuming coverage.

Returning to Menards Without a Receipt

Menards may accept a no-receipt return, but requires a driver’s license or state ID and may refuse it. Receipt-required categories, including TD and ND, remain excluded without proof.

The no-receipt clause describes lowest-offered-price in-store credit, including coupon/rebate discounts, but refers to items “on order”; its scope is unclear. Ask the Service Desk what applies rather than assuming a guaranteed amount.

Gift-receipt refund destinations, cash-receipt recovery and no-receipt dollar/frequency caps are not published. Try receipt recovery first.

How Do You Look Up a Menards Receipt?

Menards documents kiosk lookup for card and check purchases, plus online saved-card lookup in its Lookup Receipts help:

  1. In store: use any store’s kiosk for credit-card, debit-card or check purchases. Bring the original card or checking-account details; filter by date or SKU.
  2. Online: open My Account → Purchase History → Lookup Receipts, select the saved card and date, then save or print the PDF. Expired cards can be saved for lookup.
  3. Check purchases: online check-specific steps are not documented; use the kiosk.

How to Return to Menards

Menards’ receipt or order email and product code determine the applicable route. Before going, gather:

  • Receipt or order-confirmation email.
  • Driver’s license/state ID if requesting a no-receipt return.
  • Original rebate receipt for rebate-promotion merchandise.
  • Every part, accessory, paperwork and the UPC; keep available packaging.
  • Original payment card for kiosk lookup.

Do Items Need to Be Unused or in the Original Box?

Yes for MENARDS.COM returns: Menards requires unused merchandise, original packaging, accessories, paperwork and parts. Menards publishes no universal condition rule for ordinary store purchases; GP, SV and unused MA returns have packaging requirements.

Returning at a Menards Store Service Desk

Menards accepts store-purchase returns at any store’s entrance Service Desk under its return guidelines.

  1. Go to the Service Desk with the item, every part, its original UPC and purchase proof. Without the UPC, Menards limits you to an even exchange for an identical product.
  2. Show the receipt/order email and identify the product code; check which deadline applies.
  3. Request an eligible refund or exchange; confirm the amount and payment form before leaving.
  4. Keep the return receipt or Merchandise Credit Check so you can follow up.

Can You Return a MENARDS.COM Order to a Store?

Yes, but Menards leaves acceptance to that individual store’s discretion. Menards’ Contact Us form is the general contact route if you need instructions.

Shipping a MENARDS.COM Order Back

Menards’ Help Center lists “Start Return Process.” Accessible instructions do not publish a verified label, RMA, carrier, warehouse address or pickup workflow; use that entry or Contact Us before sending anything.

The deadline action is also unpublished, so arrange shipment early. Return shipping is deducted unless the item is defective; other retained charges appear below.

What Does Menards Charge on Returns?

Menards names several fees and deductions in its return policy and Terms of Order.

Charge When it applies Wording / consequence
25% special-order restocking Accepted non-custom special order Acceptance at Menards’ sole discretion
25% cut/altered stock restocking Cut or altered stock “May” apply
25% pickup restocking Cut or altered stock in a We Pull/Menards Picks order that is canceled or not picked up “Will” apply
HP handling/packaging Charged handling/packaging Not refunded
Online processing Applicable original processing fees Not refunded
We Pull processing Order reaches In Process Nonrefundable
Return shipping Nondefective online return Deducted; defective merchandise exempt
Original online shipping Online return Not refunded
$6 credit-check reissue Eligible lost/damaged Merchandise Credit Check Per reissued check

Menards Picks orders can be canceled before they reach In Process; after that, ask Menards whether a return is possible.

Menards does not state that every other return is fee-free or whether fees apply per item, order or parcel.

Example: Assume Menards accepts a $400 non-custom special order with 25% restocking. The fee is $100, leaving $300 before tax or other adjustments; the final refund calculation is not published.

Rebate Receipts, the 11% Rebate and Contractor Rewards

Menards deducts the rebate value when rebate-promotion merchandise is returned without the original rebate receipt. Separately, Menards’ terms for price adjustments on 11% rebate sales say returns, exchanges and later sale-price adjustments void the 11% rebate on the affected items. Buy N Fly counts net purchases, so returns reduce reward credit. Rebate credit is for future in-store purchases and cannot be spent on MENARDS.COM.

Example: Assume a $100 item purchased under a hypothetical 11% rebate, with its original rebate receipt missing. The deduction is $11, leaving $89 before other adjustments. This example does not establish a current promotion.

When Will You Get Your Menards Refund?

Menards estimates online card credit at about 7–10 days after warehouse receipt and processing, not after mailing or arrival alone. The refund guidance does not label those business days.

Stage Store return at Service Desk MENARDS.COM return to warehouse
Return window 90 days from purchase or category window Same; deadline action: Not published
Menards processing Not published Not published; must finish before credit estimate starts
Card credit estimate Not published About 7–10 days after receipt and processing; day unit not specified

You paid with Within 90 days with receipt you get
Cash Cash
Debit/credit card Account refund; Merchandise Credit Check if card cannot be credited
Check Age-dependent outcome below
In-store credit, coupon or gift card In-store credit

Eligible receipted returns after 90 days receive in-store credit. Check and split-payment rules further determine the destination.

How Is a Refund Paid If You Used a Check?

Menards gives in-store credit when the receipt is under six days old. Over six days, cash is available only with no outstanding checks with Menards.

Exactly six days is not covered by the published wording. Ask the Service Desk; do not delay past a category deadline to seek cash.

Split Payments, Gift Cards and Store Credit

Menards refunds split payments in this priority order, at its discretion: Menards Card, Visa, Discover, American Express, Mastercard, in-store credit/gift card, debit, cash. Payment by gift card, coupon or in-store credit produces in-store credit.

Replacing a Lost Merchandise Credit Check

Menards may reissue a lost/damaged return Merchandise Credit Check if a balance remains, for $6 per check. Lost Capital One card rebate certificates use the number on the back of the card instead; these are different instruments. Menards does not accept Merchandise Credit Checks as payment on MENARDS.COM; use them in a store.

What Can’t You Return to Menards?

Menards lists these nonreturnable categories:

  • BA clearance: bargain-area, one-of-a-kind, closeout and damaged products are final sale. Ordinary sale pricing does not automatically mean clearance.
  • Gift cards: nonreturnable, except legally required cash redemption.
  • Collector cards: nonreturnable; online orders cannot be canceled once placed.
  • Online custom exclusions: custom window treatments, custom exterior shutters, all doors, custom windows, steel door glass, replacement glass tabletops, building plans/mini-prints/blueprints/renderings, custom countertops and custom-cut steel panels.

Special Orders and Custom Products

Menards may accept non-custom special orders at its sole discretion with 25% restocking. Custom-made special orders are nonrefundable, and production-stage custom orders cannot be canceled.

The Terms of Order require reporting defects/nonconformity within three days of receipt and name replacement as the exclusive contractual remedy. That is contract wording, not a ruling on statutory rights. Before ordering, compare how Lowe’s handles special orders.

Opened Herbicides, Pesticides and Aerosols

Menards will not physically accept these opened products back, but offers replacement or an in-store credit voucher while you keep the product. Unopened products follow ordinary policy. Further eligibility details are not published; ask Menards which remedy applies before bringing opened chemicals in.

Damaged, Defective and Installed Products

Menards’ damage route depends on product, delivery service and problem. The following deadlines cover separate situations; no single defect deadline replaces them.

What If a MENARDS.COM Order Arrives Damaged?

Menards says to contact Online Customer Service within three days of receipt for return assistance and replacement. Use the Contact Us form; Menards’ Orders & Shipping page gives the same route.

Online Customer Service also handles vendor clerical errors causing wrong items and damaged/defective online merchandise. Menards does not say whether the three-day deadline also applies to other defects; report any problem as soon as you find it.

Whirlpool Nationwide Delivery: Inspect Before You Sign

Menards distinguishes two factory-direct delivery services for Whirlpool, Maytag, Amana and KitchenAid in its delivery-damage instructions.

Service When to inspect Who to contact Remedy
Installation/Uncrate Set in Place At delivery; refuse visible damage Delivery crew Same-model redelivery at no charge or cancellation
Basic Delivery Concealed damage within 7 calendar days of delivery Whirlpool; approval required Free pickup and same-model redelivery, or cancellation with free pickup

Installation-service returns are restricted after delivery and an adult’s signature. For Basic Delivery, contact Whirlpool at 1-888-900-7860 or tradesupport@whirlpool.com, Monday–Friday, 8 a.m.–5 p.m. ET except select holidays. Supply the Menards order number and appliance serial number. Damage from improper handling by others is excluded. Menards handles approved cancellation refunds.

Installed Products That Can’t Come Back

Menards’ installed-product complaint instructions require its complaint form plus a copy of the receipt, invoice or special-order contract, mailed to: Installed Product Complaint Department, Menard, Inc., 5101 Menard Drive, Eau Claire, WI 54703.

This is a complaint address. Obtain the form through Menards; do not ship merchandise there.

Your Rights Beyond the Menards Policy

The FTC Cooling-Off Rule supplies no automatic three-day cancellation right for entirely online or permanent-store purchases. FTC warranty guidance separates warranty problems: contact the seller, then the manufacturer if unresolved; repair may come before a refund.

Menards’ return policy is voluntary, and this guide cannot predict how an individual store will use its discretion. Read how we check retailer policies for the sources behind each rule.

Exchanges at Menards

Menards supports direct exchanges for eligible TD, ND, GP, SV, MA and PG merchandise within their deadlines, with receipts. A missing UPC limits you to an even exchange for an identical product. SV items that fail initially get a new-item exchange within seven days of purchase; MA manufacturing defects within seven days get a return or exchange.

Online mail-exchange steps, price-difference handling, stock guarantees and exchange fees are not published. Request instructions before mailing for an exchange; the following mistakes can also change eligibility.

Return Policy for Menards: Mistakes That Cost You Money

  • Fueling equipment: adding gas removes the GP return route, even within 30 days.
  • Discarding rebate receipts: returning rebate-promotion merchandise without the original rebate receipt triggers a rebate-value deduction.
  • Counting from delivery: no online clock reset is published; use purchase as the starting point.
  • Expecting a late card refund: accepted receipted returns after 90 days produce in-store credit.
  • Missing appliance inspection: inspect Installation deliveries before signing; inspect Basic Delivery appliances for concealed damage within seven calendar days of delivery, and contact Whirlpool promptly if you find any.

Keep the receipt, aim within 90 days for the general refund tier, expect in-store credit afterward, and check the category code before relying on either route.

Menards Return FAQ

Can I return pallets to Menards?

Yes. Menards says unneeded pallets can go to a local store for recycling free of charge. The policy does not promise a purchase refund or deposit repayment. Treat this as a recycling service and ask the store about your pallets before transporting them.

Do Menards BIG and Contractor Cards extend the return window?

Menards does not publish an extended return window in the card-program material reviewed. Use the ordinary purchase-based window and receipt-code rules unless Menards confirms otherwise. Contractor Card Buy N Fly rewards count net purchases, so returns and refunds reduce qualifying reward credit.

What happens if I return an item that came with a gift receipt?

Menards does not publish a gift-receipt-specific refund destination. Take the item and gift receipt to the Service Desk and ask what remedy applies before expecting cash or a card refund. A gift receipt differs from a gift card, which has its own nonreturnability rule.

Can I return a dead annual plant under the plant guarantee?

Menards’ one-year guarantee names perennials, trees and shrubs, with a receipt, for exchange or purchase-price in-store credit. Annuals are not named, so coverage cannot be assumed. Ask the Service Desk about your plant and keep its receipt rather than relying on the one-year rule.

Can I return cut-to-length or altered material?

Menards says cut or altered stock may incur a 25% restocking fee. Ask about return eligibility and deductions before cutting or altering material. If cut or altered stock is in a We Pull or Menards Picks order that you cancel or don’t collect, Menards says the 25% fee will apply.
