Michaels Return Policy: 60 Days, No Receipt, Exceptions & Refunds
The return policy Michaels publishes in the US allows 60 days from purchase for new, unused items in original packaging, bought in store or on Michaels.com. With a receipt, refunds generally go to the original payment; without one, expect a Store Return Card or exchange at the item’s lowest 90-day price. Marketplace and MakerPlace sellers set their own rules.
Michaels returns: key facts
- Michaels.com and store purchases have a 60-day window from purchase, not delivery, with category exceptions.
- Michaels offers Rewards-number and payment-card receipt lookups. Without a located receipt, photo ID is required and credit uses the lowest price of the previous 90 days.
- Direct online orders can be returned through Order History or at a store; store purchases cannot be returned online. Marketplace and MakerPlace items go back to the seller.
- Clearance and opened trading cards cannot be returned; cut fabric and gift/prepaid cards are final except where law requires. Cricut needs unopened packaging and a receipt; Glowforge needs a sealed box, receipt and 14 days.
- Debit refunds are cash; gift-card/gift-receipt refunds use a Store Return Card. Original shipping may be deducted unless Michaels made an error; general processing and bank times are unpublished.
This guide covers Michaels US purchases, with separate Marketplace, MakerPlace and MichaelsPro routes. Canadian rules differ and are not covered here; for other retailers, browse more US store return guides.

How Long Do You Have to Return Something to Michaels?
Michaels allows 60 days from purchase for eligible direct online orders and store purchases. Exceptions appear in Michaels’ return policy.
The online wording also says “two months.” Michaels does not say how that squares with 60 days, whether it counts calendar or business days, whether the purchase day counts, or what cutoff time applies. Return early rather than relying on an exact date.
Does the 60 days start at purchase or delivery?
Michaels’ online window starts at purchase; delivery does not restart it.
Example: Assume an ordinary Michaels.com order arrives ten days after purchase. Those transit days count against the window; delivery does not give another 60 days.
Michaels does not publish whether starting a mailed return, dispatching it, obtaining a carrier scan or warehouse arrival must happen by day 60. Submit and ship well before the deadline, keep tracking, or use an eligible store return. Some guides still count from delivery; Michaels’ own pages count from purchase.
Is there a 2026 holiday return extension at Michaels?
As of October 28, 2026, Michaels’ US return policy and help pages publish no 2026 holiday or Christmas extension, so the standard rules apply. Some guides quote an October 1–December 24 purchase range with a January 31, 2027 deadline; Michaels’ own pages had not published one as of October 28, 2026. An extension could still be announced, so recheck before relying on extra time.
The standing costume rule is separate: online-only costumes and accessory kits must return seven days before the holiday. Michaels does not define the holiday date or mailing milestone, so return these well before that point.
How to Return to Michaels: Store, Online or MichaelsPro
Check the seller on the product page or order before choosing from the official return instructions; third-party orders use the seller routes below.
Returning a Michaels store purchase
Michaels accepts eligible store purchases at any Michaels location within 60 days for return or exchange with a receipt. Store purchases cannot be returned online. Bring your payment card and Rewards number for a missing-receipt lookup.
Returning a Michaels.com order, including guest orders
Michaels.com orders can be returned to a store with the packing slip or confirmation email as the receipt, except Marketplace/MakerPlace items and the three Glowforge products listed below. For an online return:
- Sign in to your Michaels account and open Order History.
- Select View Details on the order, then Return under Need Help.
- Choose the items, return reason and condition; optionally add notes, photos or video.
- Submit, then open Return Details for the order-specific instructions and refund timing.
Guests: start with Track My Order, create a Michaels account, then begin the return, as described in Michaels’ Returns help. If the request fails, contact Customer Care at 1-800-642-4235.
MichaelsPro orders need a Return Authorization
MichaelsPro allows refunds within 60 days from purchase, but every return needs a Return Authorization from 1-833-MIKEPRO (1-833-645-3776). Restocking fees may apply; the amount and assessment basis are unpublished. Ask about charges before shipping.
How Do Marketplace and MakerPlace Returns Work?
Michaels Marketplace and MakerPlace items return to the seller under that seller’s purchase-time policy, not through ordinary Michaels store returns or a universal 60-day rule. If you also buy from third-party sellers on Amazon, our Amazon return policy guide explains how Amazon separates its own items from seller items.
Michaels’ pages word seller identity differently: its shipping policy calls third-party products sold by Michaels and shipped by vendors, while the return policy and terms describe third-party sellers responsible for returns. Use the return policy and terms for returns, checking the seller in order details rather than the shipper. If unclear, call Customer Care before sending anything.
Marketplace: prepaid UPS label back to the seller
Michaels Marketplace uses Account → Orders → Create a Return. Submit within the seller’s purchase-time window, then use the prepaid UPS label to ship directly to the seller. A prepaid label does not mean nothing will be deducted from the refund.
Michaels’ Marketplace processing help allows sellers up to seven days after the item returns to submit a refund decision. That is a seller decision period, not the time the refund takes to reach your bank.
MakerPlace: seller approval, disputes and shipping costs
MakerPlace sellers choose 60-day, 30-day or no-return policies, including product-specific policies. Request through Order History → Return, or the order-confirmation email link for guests; the seller approves and coordinates the return.
Michaels’ MakerPlace seller help expects a response within 72 hours and advises mailing within seven days for prompt resolution; the mailing advice is not a universal forfeiture deadline. A declined request can go through Returns and Disputes; rejecting a seller’s dispute offer escalates to MakerPlace support. Seller help gives a rejected dispute a seven-day response period before it closes, so check its status promptly and reply in time. It also requires pictures for the return reasons “Item Does not Work,” “Not as Described” and “Missing Parts or Accessories.” A final-sale listing may remove the Return button without removing legal rights.
The consumer return policy says shoppers pay return shipping. MakerPlace seller help words it differently, allowing sellers to cover, deduct or share costs and recommending seller payment for problem items. Assume you pay for change-of-mind shipping unless the seller’s approval on your order says otherwise.
Seller help also says automatic refunds follow five days of seller inaction; the MakerPlace seller PDF says seven. Do not count on either date: contact Customer Care after the 72-hour response expectation passes and check your order’s return status.
Both sources describe refund issue within 3–5 business days after processing, but word the trigger differently: web help requires seller processing; the PDF ties it to tracked delivery. Keep tracking until refunded; ask Customer Care about status. Support may assist after nonresponse; that does not create a store-refund entitlement.
Can You Return to Michaels Without a Receipt?
Often yes, but if a lookup cannot find the receipt, you get store credit or an exchange, not your money back. The no-receipt policy works in this order:
- For online orders, use the packing slip or confirmation email as your receipt.
- Ask for a lookup using your Michaels Rewards number or payment card. A found receipt follows with-receipt rules.
- If no receipt is located, present valid photo ID, which Michaels records for authorization and fraud prevention.
Accepted ID includes a US, Canadian or Mexican driver’s license; US state ID; Canadian provincial ID; passport; or US military ID. Bring ID for an in-store lookup.
No separate no-receipt deadline or bank-statement-only route is published. Go early; Michaels may limit returns and exchanges. Sample products have a carve-out without a complete alternative policy, so ask before buying or returning a sample. If you split craft-supply shopping between the two chains, our Hobby Lobby return policy guide sets out that store’s receipt and store-credit rules.
How the 90-day lowest price sets your Store Return Card
Michaels bases an unlocated-receipt return on the item’s lowest selling price in the previous 90 days, issued as a Store Return Card and/or merchandise exchange. The 90 days is a price lookback, not extra return time.
Example: Assume an otherwise eligible item cost $30 before tax, lookup finds no receipt, valid ID is supplied, and its lowest 90-day price was $18. The merchandise-value basis is $18, or $12 less than paid; tax is not calculated here. Use your Rewards number for future lookups.
Can You Return Opened or Used Items to Michaels?
Generally not. Michaels requires merchandise to be new, unused and in its original packaging, so a used craft supply that isn’t defective falls outside the policy. Defective merchandise is expressly excepted in the store-purchase section of its return policy.
The general rule does not explicitly require every ordinary box to remain factory-sealed. Specific categories do: Cricut must be unopened, Glowforge sealed, and opened trading cards are treated as damaged and cannot return. No universal tags-attached or all-accessories rule is published; bring everything supplied in the box and check the category exceptions.
What Michaels Won’t Take Back
Clearance means the clearance classification, not every promotional sale. Other categories have these restrictions:
| Item type | Michaels’ rule | What you can do instead |
|---|---|---|
| Clearance | AS IS; no refund/exchange | Check classification before buying |
| Cut fabric | Final sale online/in store, except where law requires | Confirm quantity before cutting |
| Opened trading cards | Treated as damaged; not returnable | Decide before opening |
| Gift/prepaid cards | No return/exchange except where law requires | Distinguish cards from merchandise paid with them |
| Online-only costumes/accessory kits | Return seven days before the holiday | Act well before the cutoff |
| Cricut | Unopened, with receipt | Warranty defects go to manufacturer |
| Glowforge machines/filters | Sealed, receipt, 14 days from purchase | Use the specific support route below |
| Custom framing | Same-store rework within 14 days of pickup | Request rework |
| Classes | Refundable up to start date | Request cancellation before starting |
| Parties | Cancel at least seven days before; service fees excluded | Cancel 7+ days ahead; guest bookings: call Customer Care |
Can you return a Cricut or Glowforge to Michaels?
Michaels accepts Cricut returns only unopened with a receipt; Glowforge machines and filters need a receipt, sealed box and return within 14 days of purchase. Lookup does not waive Cricut’s receipt requirement.
Under the brand exceptions, damaged or defective Cricut items within the manufacturer’s warranty go to the manufacturer, except returns required by law. Opening removes the ordinary return route; warranty remedies remain separate.
Glowforge Pro 10685318, Plus 10685321 and Compact air filter 10685323 cannot be returned in stores: contact Michaels Customer Care to initiate. For opened-box troubleshooting or warranty defects, contact Glowforge at 1-855-338-2122 within 14 days of purchase.
Custom framing, classes and parties
Michaels offers custom-framing rework at the same store within 14 days of pickup; a cash refund is not stated. Example: Assume a recently collected frame’s finished result is unsatisfactory. Ask the pickup store for rework within that window rather than expecting a cash refund.
Classes are refundable up to their start date; MakerPlace classes follow seller policies. Parties require cancellation at least seven days before for a booking refund; within seven days, no refund. If you booked as a guest, call Customer Care at 1-800-642-4235 to cancel. Party cancellation help excludes service fees even when the booking qualifies.
Does Michaels Charge Return Fees or Keep Shipping?
Michaels publishes no general ordinary return, store-return or restocking fee; that does not establish free returns. Its return policy distinguishes original delivery charges from return postage.
| Charge | When it applies |
|---|---|
| Original shipping/handling | May be deducted unless Michaels made an error |
| Damaged/lost shipment shipping | Refunded, according to Online Order Questions |
| Ordinary direct-return postage | Payer, label price, carrier and deductions: Not published |
| Ordinary return/restocking fees | General fee schedule: Not published |
| MichaelsPro restocking | May apply; amount, basis and exemptions: Not published |
Alaska/Hawaii, oversized/freight and cross-border postage differences are also unpublished. Check Return Details or Customer Care before paying postage.
When Will You Get Your Michaels Refund?
Michaels publishes no general US refund-processing or bank-posting time. Online Return Details shows order-specific timing after submission; eligibility is a separate clock.
| Route | Return window | Michaels/seller processing | Bank/card posting |
|---|---|---|---|
| Michaels.com/store | 60 days from purchase; mail milestone: Not published | Not published; online Return Details supplies order-specific timing | Not published |
| Marketplace | Seller’s window | Seller decision up to seven days after return | Not published |
| MakerPlace | Seller’s policy | 3–5 business days after processing; trigger and automatic-refund wording differ as explained above | Not published |
Some guides quote 3–5 business days for every Michaels refund; that figure appears only in Michaels’ MakerPlace seller guidance.
Where your refund goes by payment type
With proof of purchase, Michaels generally refunds original payment and applicable item tax, subject to these payment exceptions:
| Payment/proof | Refund destination | Condition |
|---|---|---|
| Ordinary original payment | Original payment method | Named exceptions below apply |
| Debit card | Cash | Mail-specific cash mechanics unpublished; ask Customer Care |
| Gift card or gift receipt | Store Return Card | Different from no-receipt valuation |
| Check | Refund after the 10-day check waiting period, or a Return Card within it | A check-payment restriction, not a return-processing time; exact mechanics unpublished, so ask the store |
| Online PayPal purchase returned in store | Cash up to $500 | Above $500, contact Customer Care |
| Affirm | Contactless credit to wallet’s Affirm virtual card | Without it, another debit/credit card; without another card, ask a manager |
| No located receipt | Store Return Card/exchange | Lowest selling price of previous 90 days |
Affirm loan-adjustment timing is unpublished; ask before assuming your loan has changed.
What happens to Michaels Rewards when you return?
Michaels deducts Rewards earned on the returned purchase, potentially leaving a negative balance. Separately, value paid with a Rewards voucher returns to that voucher if unexpired, otherwise as Rewards, under the Rewards terms. Vouchers expire 32 days after issue (11:59 p.m. CST on day 32), so check the expiry shown on yours; that date decides which way the value comes back. It does not extend the return window.
For payment split between a Michaels Card and another tender, you choose which receives the credit. The Rewards deduction is 9% of the returned item’s purchase price if credited to the Michaels Card, or your tier’s rate on that price if credited to the other tender.
Example: Assume $6 earned from the returned purchase and a current Rewards balance of $2. Reversing $6 leaves −$4 in Rewards, not a cash charge.
Exchanges at Michaels: In Store vs Online
Michaels permits eligible store-purchase exchanges within 60 days; no-receipt remedies can include exchange. Michaels.com purchases require return and reorder.
No exchange-fee, stock-hold or promotional-price guarantee is published. Check the current price before reordering.
What If a Michaels Order Arrives Damaged or Wrong?
Michaels’ Returns help directs shoppers with wrong or arrival-damaged online items to phone/chat support for replacement or refund help. Use Customer Care, 1-800-642-4235; shipping charges are refunded for damaged or lost shipments.
No general reporting deadline, mandatory evidence list or guaranteed prepaid defect label is published. Report promptly; photos/video are optional. Defective store merchandise has a condition exception, while Cricut warranty defects go to the manufacturer and Glowforge contact is within 14 days of purchase. Marketplace/MakerPlace problems use seller routes.
Warranties and your legal rights
Michaels’ voluntary 60-day policy is separate from warranty rights. The FTC’s warranty guidance explains that repair may precede refund and state implied-warranty coverage varies. Its Cooling-Off Rule does not cover ordinary online or permanent-store purchases.
For unresolved problems, FTC guidance recommends keeping purchase/warranty records, describing the defect and requested remedy, asking for a manager and considering your state consumer protection office.
Michaels does not publish direct return postage, refund timing or holiday plans, and its MakerPlace pages word several rules differently, so this guide marks those details unpublished. How StoreReturners checks policies explains that approach; for your own order, follow its Return Details or ask Customer Care.
Michaels Return Policy Mistakes to Avoid
- Starting at delivery: Michaels.com counts from purchase.
- Treating 90 days as extra time: that figure values no-receipt credit.
- Opening Cricut or Glowforge before deciding: Cricut requires unopened packaging; Glowforge needs a sealed box and return within 14 days.
- Taking seller items to a store: Marketplace/MakerPlace use seller policies and routes.
- Expecting card credit for every payment: debit refunds are cash; gift-card payments return as Store Return Card credit.
The return policy Michaels publishes rewards shoppers who check the seller, keep the box sealed until they’re sure, and act well inside 60 days of purchase.
FAQ
Do Michaels Rewards tiers or the Michaels Card give longer returns?
Michaels publishes no longer return window or free-return entitlement for Red, Gold, Platinum or Michaels Card members in the reviewed US terms. Use the purchase channel’s standard rules and category exceptions. Returning a qualifying purchase also reverses earned Rewards and may leave a negative Rewards balance.
Can I take a Marketplace or MakerPlace item to a Michaels store?
No. Michaels excludes Marketplace and MakerPlace products from ordinary store returns; follow the seller policy shown with your purchase. Check the seller in order details, rather than judging by who shipped the parcel. If the seller does not respond, contact Customer Care for assistance instead of expecting a store refund.
Can I return a gift card or prepaid card bought at Michaels?
Michaels does not accept gift-card or prepaid-card returns or exchanges except where law requires. Merchandise bought with a gift card is different: refunds go on a Store Return Card. Cashing out a leftover balance is a separate question; Michaels’ terms and conditions cover gift cards in their own section.
Can I get cash for a Michaels.com order paid with PayPal?
Yes, Michaels’ policy provides cash refunds up to $500 for online PayPal purchases returned in store. Above $500, contact Customer Care for instructions. This cash rule applies to store handling; it does not establish a cash refund for a mailed return or override product eligibility restrictions.
Can Michaels refuse a return even with ID?
Yes. Michaels reserves the right to limit returns and exchanges, so valid ID does not guarantee acceptance. For an unlocated-receipt return, ID is recorded for authorization and fraud prevention. Michaels does not publish a bank-statement-only return route; bring your payment card and Rewards number for lookup.
