Ulta Return Policy: 30-Day Refunds, 60-Day Credit and ID Rules
The return policy at Ulta Beauty (US) gives most new or gently used Ulta store and Ulta.com purchases a refund to the original payment method within 30 days of purchase, then credit on days 31–60. Every return needs proof of purchase or a verifiable purchase, plus physical government-issued ID. UB Marketplace, delivery-app and TikTok Shop orders follow separate routes.
Ulta returns at a glance
- Eligible direct purchases get original-payment refunds within 30 days of purchase; days 31–60 get merchandise credit, or an electronic gift card by mail.
- Every return needs purchase proof or system verification, physical government-issued ID, and a phone number or email. Unverified purchases get no refund, exchange or credit.
- Shipped Ulta.com orders can go back to a store or by shopper-paid ground mail to Bolingbrook, Illinois. Same Day Delivery orders are store-only, pickup orders are safest returned in store (Ulta’s pages word pickup mail returns differently), Marketplace items go to the seller, and mail exchanges aren’t available.
- Direct mailed refunds take up to 30 business days after warehouse receipt to process; card posting may take 7–10 days after Ulta’s refund email.
- Gift cards, salon-bought wigs/extensions and intimate wellness devices aren’t returnable. Mini Brands Capsules must be unopened and sealed.
The official Ulta returns policy separates purchases by channel. For other retailers, browse more US store return guides.

How Long Do You Have to Return Something to Ulta?
Ulta allows 30 days from original purchase for eligible original-payment refunds and days 31–60 for merchandise credit. Condition, purchase verification and approval still apply; mailed later-tier returns receive an electronic gift card.
Ulta doesn’t specify calendar versus business days, purchase-day inclusion, cutoff time or weekend rollover. Return a few days early rather than relying on a calculated final date. If you’re choosing between the two beauty chains, see how Sephora’s return window compares.
What do you get on day 20 versus day 40?
On day 20, an eligible return goes back to the original payment, subject to payment-method restrictions. On day 40, it becomes merchandise credit in store or an electronic gift card by mail. Gift-receipt returns get credit or an exchange on either day.
| Tier | In store | By direct mail | With gift receipt |
|---|---|---|---|
| Within 30 days | Original payment, subject to restrictions | Original payment; gift-card payments return as a gift card | Merchandise credit or equal/lesser exchange |
| Days 31–60 | Merchandise credit | Electronic gift card | Merchandise credit or equal/lesser exchange |
Example: Assume a verified direct $40 card purchase in eligible condition, all components present, physical ID shown and contact details provided, excluding tax and shipping. A store return on day 20 qualifies for $40 to the original card; day 40 qualifies for $40 merchandise credit. Both require approval.
When the Ulta return clock starts
Ulta counts from the original purchase date, including for Ulta.com orders; it doesn’t mention a shipment or delivery start. An online order’s window is already running during transit, so use the order date when delivery is slow.
Is there a 2026 Ulta holiday return extension?
As of October 28, 2026, Ulta’s official returns information and site terms don’t publish a 2026 holiday return extension. Use the standard 30/60-day rules unless Ulta announces otherwise; gift receipts allow 60 days from purchase for credit or an eligible exchange.
Older or third-party guides that list holiday dates aren’t quoting a current Ulta notice. This guide will be updated if Ulta posts one.
Can You Return Used Makeup to Ulta?
Yes. Ulta accepts most gently used products with all original components, subject to validation and approval under its returns rules.
Ulta doesn’t publish a percentage-remaining threshold, universal tag rule or missing-box exception. Bring every component and the packaging you have; online-to-store instructions specifically request original packaging. Mini Brands Capsules must remain unopened and sealed.
Promotional gift-with-purchase return requirements or deductions aren’t specified, so bring the gift too. Ulta judges whether use qualifies as gentle; opening a product doesn’t guarantee acceptance. For another beauty retailer’s conditions, see the Bath & Body Works return rules.
Returning to Ulta Without a Receipt
Ulta can accept a lost-receipt return only if it can verify the original purchase in its system. The Rewards FAQ says a Member ID used at checkout lets the store look up the receipt; bring the order-confirmation email for an Ulta.com purchase.
Physical government-issued ID and a phone number or email are required for every return, separately from proof. ID alone doesn’t establish the purchase. With neither proof nor a verifiable transaction, Ulta provides no refund, exchange or merchandise credit. Some guides still describe lowest-price store credit; Ulta’s current policy doesn’t offer it for unverified purchases.
Returning a gift from Ulta
Ulta accepts eligible gift-receipt returns within 60 days of original purchase for merchandise credit or a different product of equal or lesser value. A gift receipt doesn’t provide an original-payment refund. Bring the gift receipt with the item when using the store route below.
How to Return to Ulta
Ulta’s return-method instructions recommend returning in store for a faster refund, which also avoids mail postage.
Returning in an Ulta Beauty store
- Check the channel. TikTok Shop and non-US purchases cannot use this route. Same Day Delivery orders use store returns only, and a store return is the pickup-order route every Ulta page supports.
- Bring the item with every original component and proof that matches how you bought it: the store receipt; the original order-confirmation email plus all original packaging materials for Ulta.com and Marketplace orders; or the DoorDash, Instacart or Uber Eats receipt.
- Bring physical government-issued ID and provide a phone number or email.
- Lost the receipt? Give the Rewards Member ID used at checkout so the store can look up the purchase.
- Present everything for validation and approval; eligibility isn’t automatic.
Use Ulta’s store locator to choose a location.
Mailing an Ulta.com order back
This route is for shipped Ulta.com orders sold by Ulta. Same Day Delivery orders are store-only, and Marketplace items use the seller route below.
Pickup orders: Ulta’s main returns table lists them as store-only, but its pickup FAQ describes mailing a pickup return to the same Bolingbrook return center. The pages word it differently, so return a pickup order in store if you can. If you need to mail one, confirm with Guest Services first and follow the FAQ’s packing instructions. Include a printed order confirmation marked with the items being returned, or handwrite your full name, order number and returning item numbers from the receipt. Ulta doesn’t say what a mailed pickup return gets after day 30.
- Pack the item with all its components and your proof of purchase; Ulta recommends reusing the original shipping package.
- Attach the return mailing label to the package exterior.
- Ship by ground only. Aerosols and flammable products must meet USDOT hazardous-materials rules.
- Choose a trackable service, as Ulta recommends.
- Send to Ulta.com Return Center, 925 Belle Lane, Bolingbrook, IL 60490.
You pay postage; Ulta publishes no fixed amount. Exchanges aren’t available by mail.
Ulta’s site terms also list self-service labels from your account order history, online QR codes for UPS drop-off, and store returns for site purchases, including Marketplace items. Whether your order shows those options, and any label charge, aren’t published, so check Order Status first. Ulta doesn’t publish home pickup or general third-party drop-off. Ulta also gives no separate return-shipping guidance for Alaska, Hawaii, territories or APO/FPO addresses; ask Guest Services before shipping from those locations.
Is mailing within 30 days enough?
Ulta’s direct-mail instructions use mailed within 30 days for original-payment eligibility. Separately, returns received after day 60 aren’t refunded and are mailed back.
Examples: Assume verified, eligible direct purchases, proof included, and day numbers already assigned under Ulta’s unpublished counting convention.
- Example A: Mailed day 29, received day 35: meets both checkpoints, subject to validation.
- Example B: Mailed day 58, received day 63: rejected and returned. Shipping before day 60 isn’t enough.
Mail early with tracking; Ulta doesn’t specify postmark-versus-scan mechanics.
How Do UB Marketplace Returns Work?
UB Marketplace products are sold and shipped by third-party sellers; Ulta handles refunds. Return them to any Ulta Beauty store or begin a seller mail return through Order Status. Ulta says Marketplace uses Happy Returns for in-store and online returns.
Look for the Marketplace badge on the product page. Never send seller items to Bolingbrook. Ulta doesn’t publish a Marketplace fee schedule, confirm arbitrary Happy Returns drop-offs, or specify whether initiation, label creation, carrier handoff or seller receipt must happen by day 60. Start and ship early using the order’s instructions.
The Marketplace refund table sends single-tender refunds to the same card; mixed payments involving a gift card go entirely to an Ulta gift card.
Example: Assume an eligible Marketplace return within 30 days of purchase, with a $60 item paid using a $20 gift card and $40 card payment, excluding tax and shipping. The full $60 returns as an Ulta gift card.
The general rule gives credit on days 31–60, but the Marketplace table words it differently, specifying the same card without a date limit. Return within 30 days if you want money back on your card. On days 31–60, expect credit unless Guest Services or your order page confirms a card refund.
Which Ulta Purchases Follow Different Return Rules?
Delivery-app, TikTok Shop and non-US purchases don’t follow the standard Ulta.com mail route. Ulta’s channel-specific instructions give these alternatives:
| Channel | Where | Limit | Refund destination |
|---|---|---|---|
| DoorDash / Instacart | Store, with service receipt | 60 days from purchase | Store-only merchandise credit |
| Uber Eats | Store, with Uber Eats receipt | 60 days from purchase | Uber Eats account, distributed by in-app refund selection |
| TikTok Shop | TikTok app only | Not published by Ulta | Follow app instructions; Ulta doesn’t publish fees |
Same Day Delivery orders use the standard 30/60-day tiers but return to a store only. Pickup orders use the same tiers, with the mail difference explained under mailing. Purchases made outside the US go back in the country of purchase.
DoorDash marketplace orders aren’t the same as Ulta.com Same Day Delivery. Ulta’s current pages don’t describe an Ulta Beauty at Target procedure; ask Guest Services before assuming either store will accept it.
When Will You Get Your Ulta Refund?
Ulta processes direct mailed returns within 30 business days after distribution-center receipt. Card posting may take 7–10 days after the refund email; Ulta doesn’t label that second period business days. Its mail refund instructions separate these stages:
| Stage | Store return, direct purchase | Ulta.com mail | Marketplace |
|---|---|---|---|
| Return window | 30-day refund / days 31–60 credit | Mail within 30 days for original-payment tier; receipt after day 60 rejected | Within 60 days; later-tier destination conflicts |
| Retailer processing | Not published | Within 30 business days after receipt | Not published |
| Bank/card posting | Not published | May take 7–10 days after refund email | Not published |
Don’t add the two mail stages into one guaranteed total: Ulta counts processing in business days and doesn’t label the posting period. Refund destination is a separate question:
| How you paid or return tier | Refund destination |
|---|---|
| Direct original card/payment, within 30 days | Original payment, subject to restrictions |
| Ulta gift card | New Ulta gift card |
| PayPal/AfterPay purchase returned in store, within 30 days | Preferred credit/debit card or merchandise credit |
| Marketplace single tender / gift-card mixed tender | Same card (single payment) / all Ulta gift card (gift card in the mix); days 31–60 unclear, see Marketplace section |
| Direct return on days 31–60 | Merchandise credit in store; electronic gift card by mail |
Ulta prorates applied discounts and promotions across the items in a purchase, so returning one item refunds its share of the discounted total, not its full ticket price. Direct-sale split-payment allocation, tax treatment and refunds of unused promotions aren’t published. The site terms also reserve an option to refund authorized returns by mailed check, wording it differently from the help-page destinations; expect the help-listed instrument unless Guest Services confirms otherwise, rather than requesting cash or a check as an entitlement.
Does Ulta refund shipping charges?
Ulta doesn’t refund shipping charges for ordinary returns, and shoppers pay direct-return postage. The site terms carve out an exception for shipping/handling, delivery and gift-wrap charges on authorized returns of defective products bought on the site.
Who pays defective return postage isn’t published. Contact Guest Services before mailing; the exception doesn’t establish a prepaid label.
Ulta Rewards Points and Returns
Ulta deducts base and bonus points earned on returned products. A balance can become negative if those points were already spent, according to the Rewards terms.
Redeemed points are restored, prorated for a partial return; the money paid follows the applicable refund rule. The Rewards FAQ says an in-store exchange keeps the same points discount. Restoration timing isn’t published.
No longer window or fee waiver is published for Platinum or Diamond members. Ulta prohibits returning items to rebuy them with coupons, offers or points. Avoid spending points from an order you’re likely to return.
Exchanges at Ulta
Ulta handles exchanges in store, not by direct mail. Gift-receipt exchanges must be for a different product of equal or lesser value; the policy doesn’t publish the general price-difference procedure, separate exchange fee or Marketplace exchange workflow.
Ask the store about your replacement before relying on an exchange, especially for a product with a return restriction.
What Ulta Won’t Take Back
Ulta’s refund restrictions exclude:
- Gift cards and single-use coupons used on the original purchase.
- Wigs and hair extensions bought through an Ulta Beauty salon.
- Intimate wellness devices.
- Mini Brands Capsules unless unopened and sealed.
No general sale/clearance or universal final-sale rule is published; check the product listing. Every return needs validation and approval, and Ulta may limit returns for suspected excessive returns, reseller activity or fraud. No numerical cap is published.
Damaged Products, Salon Services and Your Rights
Ulta directs damaged-item shoppers to return or exchange in store with a receipt, or contact Guest Services for mailing assistance. Use email support before shipping; Marketplace and TikTok items still need their channel-specific routes.
Ulta doesn’t publish a separate defect-reporting deadline, guaranteed replacement, photo requirement, post-window remedy or accidental-damage entitlement. Don’t treat the ordinary return policy as a complete warranty promise.
For salon-service complaints, contact the store manager within 7 days of the service date, according to Ulta’s salon policy. The remedy isn’t specified; this deadline is separate from merchandise returns and federal order protections.
What federal rules apply to Ulta orders?
The FTC’s Cooling-Off Rule doesn’t give ordinary online or permanent-store purchases a general three-day cancellation right.
For covered online orders, sellers must ship when promised, or within 30 days if no time is stated. Shipping delays require notice and a choice to consent or cancel for a full refund; an unshipped order can’t be refunded only as credit. The FTC’s nonshipment guidance explains the separate rules.
Certain credit-card billing errors, including non-delivery as agreed, require a written dispute within 60 days after the first statement containing the error was sent. Product-quality disputes aren’t billing errors under that procedure; debit protections differ. These clocks don’t replace Ulta’s return deadlines.
Return Policy at Ulta: Mistakes That Cost You a Refund
These six mistakes can cost you a refund or credit:
- Counting from delivery instead of purchase.
- Mailing near day 60 so warehouse receipt falls after day 60.
- Leaving physical government-issued ID at home.
- Sending Marketplace goods to Bolingbrook instead of following seller instructions.
- Taking TikTok Shop purchases to an Ulta store.
- Spending earned points before returning the order, risking a negative balance.
Approval remains discretionary and several operational details aren’t published; read how we check retailer policies when assessing those limits.
FAQ
Does Ulta charge a restocking fee?
Ulta’s return pages don’t list a restocking fee, but they don’t rule one out either. Ordinary direct mail returns cost you postage, with no fixed amount published, and ordinary shipping charges aren’t refunded. Contact Guest Services about defective items before assuming the same charge treatment applies.
Do Platinum or Diamond members get longer to return?
Ulta doesn’t publish a longer return window or return-fee waiver for Platinum or Diamond members in the reviewed returns and Rewards information. Use the standard 30-day refund and days 31–60 credit tiers for eligible direct purchases. A Rewards Member ID can help locate a lost receipt.
Can I return something and buy it again with a new coupon?
No. Ulta prohibits returns intended to repurchase using coupons, special offers or Rewards points; those benefits cannot be applied to prior purchases. Single-use coupons used on the original order also aren’t returned. A later coupon therefore doesn’t establish eligibility for a return-and-rebuy price adjustment.
Can Ulta refuse or limit my returns?
Yes. Every Ulta return requires validation and approval, and Ulta may limit returns for suspected misuse, including excessive returns, reseller activity or fraud. The policy publishes no numerical cap. Meeting the stated window doesn’t remove the condition, proof, physical-ID or contact-information requirements that also apply.
What happens if I paid by check?
Ulta’s check clause says a service fee applies when a bank returns a check unpaid, and states a 10-day waiting period for those returns. The fee amount and the wait’s start aren’t published. Ask Guest Services how that clause applies; don’t assume every check purchase carries the same delay.
