Walmart Return Policy: 90 Days, Exceptions, No Receipt and Refunds

The Walmart return policy gives most items sold by Walmart in US stores and on Walmart.com 90 days after purchase or receipt. Electronics get 30 days, most phones 14, and major-appliance returns must start within two days of accepted delivery. Marketplace sellers’ rules can differ. Eligible October 1–December 31, 2026 purchases can be returned until January 31, 2027. Full policy.

Key facts

  • Most Walmart-sold items get 90 days; named categories get 14, 30, 60 or 365 days.
  • No receipt: try purchase lookup first; verified ID-only returns receive a gift card. No numeric limit is published.
  • Authorized mail returns are free; freight, oversized goods and major appliances cannot be returned to stores.
  • Cash refunds are immediate; gift card/Walmart Balance takes up to three hours; cards typically seven days.
  • Most eligible October 1–December 31, 2026 purchases get until January 31, 2027, with exclusions.

How Long Do You Have to Return Something to Walmart?

Most Walmart-sold items get 90 days after purchase or receipt; outside-reseller purchases are ineligible. Standard return help directs shoppers to the order’s return-by date; a receipt does not guarantee approval.

Walmart does not specify calendar versus business days or inclusive counting. For Walmart-sold mail, the required deadline action—initiation, drop-off, scan or arrival—is unpublished: return early; keep tracking. Walmart Business Special Quantity Orders generally cannot be returned after delivery; report damaged or missing items under the agreed terms.

Which Walmart items have 14, 30, 60 or 365 days?

The category list assigns 14 days to most wireless phones, 30 to consumer electronics, 60 to vision/hearing products and 365 to perennials, shrubs and trees. Also:

  • 30 days: AppleCare+, PCs/components, electric bicycles/scooters, hoverboards, heating/cooling, vacuums/floorcare, True Network tech services, Verizon postpaid phones and Walmart Protection Plans.
  • 60 days: contact lenses, prescription contacts/glasses and hearing aids.
  • 90 days: eligible home/garden equipment, new tires, photo/personalized goods and unused, uninstalled toilets in original packaging.

The corporate policy lists electronics and Verizon postpaid phones at 30 days; Marketplace help instead lists computers, game hardware, printers, cameras, tablets, drones and postpaid phones at 14. The pages word it differently: for seller-fulfilled electronics, including Verizon phones, act within 14 days and confirm in Purchase History or with Help Center chat.

Private-brand package satisfaction promises apply beyond 90 days. Comparing electronics windows before buying? See Best Buy’s electronics return guide.

Does the clock start at purchase or delivery?

“After purchase or upon receipt” does not map every ordinary purchase to a start event. Follow the date in Purchase History, and act early.

Seller-fulfilled Marketplace clocks normally start seven days after shipment; major appliances count from accepted delivery. Purchases made October 1–December 31, 2026 may also use the January 31, 2027 holiday date below.

Walmart Holiday Returns 2026: The January 31 Deadline

Most eligible purchases made October 1–December 31, 2026 can be returned through January 31, 2027, under the corporate policy and dated Marketplace notice. Seller participation varies.

Example: Assume a Walmart-sold/shipped TV bought November 27, 2026 is not excluded and its order shows the extension. Its ordinary 30-day window would end in late December; the holiday rule allows January 31, 2027.

The holiday mailing cutoff action is unpublished. Check exclusions, drop off early and retain the scan receipt.

Which items don’t get the holiday extension?

Wireless phones, protection plans, major appliances, Dyson and select seasonal/luxury goods can be excluded under Walmart’s policy. The Marketplace notice also names food/beverages. Check order eligibility; seller participation varies.

Does January 31 shorten a 90-day window?

January 31’s interaction with a later ordinary 90-day deadline is unpublished, despite the “extension” wording; no “whichever is later” clause appears. Check the order’s return-by date; do not calculate a shorter deadline.

Returning to Walmart Without a Receipt

Without a paper receipt, try recovering proof first. Walmart’s receipt guidance supports these options:

  1. Find the online order’s Purchase History barcode, or ask the store to look up the order using your phone/email.
  2. For store card purchases, bring the payment card or use Receipt Lookup: store location, purchase date, total, card type and last four digits.
  3. Check app-scanned receipts or add a matching-name payment card; linked store purchases can include the prior 12 months, subject to account/privacy settings.
  4. Only then use the true no-receipt route: valid government photo ID, refund verification and, if accepted, a Walmart gift card; exchange is also offered.

Walmart says it stores the ID information in a secure database. Gift-card valuation: unpublished; ask first. WIC/SNAP-eligible items without a receipt get same-item exchange only. For comparison, Costco’s lost-receipt process ties purchases to membership; Walmart’s limits are unpublished.

Is there a limit on no-receipt returns at Walmart?

Yes: number and frequency are limited; count, dollar cap, look-back and reset are unpublished. Older guides quote fixed numbers; Walmart’s policy does not.

Walmart may limit or deny any returns, require future receipts, or suspend privileges for excessive, repetitive or abusive patterns. Keep digital receipts in Purchase History or the app so future returns stay receipted.

Can you return a Walmart gift or registry item?

Eligible gifts with receipts allow exchange, gift card or refund to the sender’s payment. Without one, corporate policy specifies exchange/gift card, while registry gift help mentions cash for gifts under $10. That wording covers gifts only, not no-receipt returns generally. The pages word it differently: expect a gift card and ask the service desk.

Marketplace gifts require receipts. Registry help says at least 30 days, while Marketplace help lists shorter appliance/electronics/luxury windows; check the order’s date and act by the shorter applicable window pending confirmation.

Registry periods: Baby 365 days, Wedding/Classroom 180, others 90. Start and category-rule priority are unpublished; confirm with Walmart. Registry mail refunds use e-gift cards after receipt; condition rules apply.

Can You Return Opened or Used Items to Walmart?

Often, but Walmart has no universal unopened-only rule. Walmart recommends keeping the packaging and receipt for at least 90 days and may refuse excessive use, alteration or abuse.

  • PCs/components require original packaging; return bundles complete and erase personal data.
  • Safety: include the original rechargeable battery, drain fuel/flammable liquids, never mail fuel-containing goods and never remove Freon from air conditioners.
  • Fully disassemble assembled items; securely repackage for carrier transit.

Walmart decides eligibility; some opened goods are exchange-only.

Items that become exchange-only once opened

Walmart’s named opened/used categories allow exchange for the exact or a similar item:

Item Window
Unlocked wireless phones 14 days
Drones/projectors 30 days
Air beds/mattresses, power generators, durable medical equipment 90 days

New, unopened items may get full refunds within their window. Opened physical games, software and movie discs: eligibility unpublished; ask Walmart. Exchange stock, price differences and fees are unpublished; confirm first.

What Walmart Won’t Take Back

Walmart’s final-sale list excludes these ordinary returns. Check recalls or warranties for separate remedies.

Item group Walmart’s rule Next action
Firearms/ammunition, air/BB guns, bows/crossbows, pepper/bear spray Final sale Check applicable remedies
Prescription drugs/devices; pseudoephedrine, ephedrine or PPA products Final sale Contact help about an issue

Prepaid phone/gaming/gift/SIM cards, video on demand, downloadable games/software Nonreturnable, subject to stated exceptions Contact help for missing/unredeemable codes
Diabetic supplies Final sale, with a Medicare Part B exception See exception below
Collectibles Eligibility conflicts Check listing before buying

The corporate policy allows some eligible Marketplace collectibles within 14 days; Marketplace restrictions list collectibles as final sale. The pages word it differently: confirm the listing with Walmart before buying/returning; do not assume eligibility.

Diabetic supplies and Medicare Part B items deemed substandard/unsuitable under supplier standards have a stated return exception. Final sale preserves warranty and legal remedies.

How to Return to Walmart

Start through Walmart’s returns hub or Purchase History; options include store, curbside, mail and pickup. Follow Start an Online Return:

  1. Open Purchase History and the item details.
  2. Select Start a return, then item and reason.
  3. Choose refund/replacement when available.
  4. Select an offered method and submit; retain the confirmation, barcode or label.

Missing purchase? Try Receipt Lookup. Use only the item’s offered methods.

In a store or at curbside

Eligible store/curbside drop-offs use the return barcode/email without printing or repackaging, subject to disassembly, battery, hazardous-goods, luxury and large-item restrictions. Bring the receipt, order number or payment card.

Eligible damaged Walmart.com goods can be returned in store. Walmart does not say whether every store purchase can be mailed instead; check the methods offered for the item before shipping.

By mail or FedEx drop-off

Mail instructions require repackaging and the provided label, available by email or in Purchase History, for the offered USPS/FedEx route. Eligible FedEx Office drop-off requires repackaging but no label printing.

Authorized returns are free; do not expect reimbursement for self-purchased postage. Non-contiguous states/territories can face mail restrictions; check offered pickup alternatives.

Can Walmart pick up a return from your home?

Yes, when offered for select active Walmart+ members, locations and purchases. Walmart+ terms allow at most four items from the same purchase per slot.

Mode Preparation Presence
FedEx pickup Package; print/attach label Need not be home
Driver handoff Box-free; show barcode Must be home

Driver handoff excludes items over 15 lb, any edge over 36 inches, prices $500+, store/curbside purchases or pickups, alcohol, medications, health/beauty devices/supplements/aids, candy, tobacco, paper goods, pet supplies, household chemicals, lawn/garden, cosmetics/skincare, toys and groceries/food; the list can change. InHome members may see FedEx only. Membership does not publish extra return days.

The corporate policy lists unused/unactivated membership fees as refundable within 90 days, while membership terms say nonrefundable except stated terms/law; they word it differently, so confirm in your account or with Walmart before counting on a refund.

Walmart’s sister warehouse club has its own Sam’s Club return guide.

Tires, photo products and large items

Return new unmounted tires only to Auto Care Center stores. Photo/personalized goods are returnable within 90 days, but corporate policy says not to mail them; Photo help permits online photo products except prints by mail. Walmart Photo’s help page counts 90 days from purchase and asks for the original packaging, accessories and packing slip. The pages word it differently: never mail prints; use a store or contact Walmart Photo first.

Freight, oversized and heavy goods require carrier pickup through Customer Care.

Walmart Major Appliance Returns: The Two-Day Rule

Start major-appliance returns within two days of accepted delivery for full refunds; no store returns. Walmart’s appliance guide directs carrier pickup through the app/returns route. Inspect first; refuse damaged delivery free.

Days 3–30 require unopened, uninstalled, undamaged, factory-sealed condition and initiation within 30 days of delivery. The corporate guide allows seller/supplier discretion and up to 20% restocking; seller policy words fees more narrowly, for eligible exempt goods not in original/sellable condition. Check seller terms; sealed can incur fees.

Opened/installed appliances past day two go to manufacturer warranty. Custom/made-to-order appliances are excluded. Small appliances/dorm/wine refrigerators get up to 90 days in-store/Walmart-fulfilled or 30 days from delivery seller-fulfilled, unless a named shorter category applies. Check Marketplace seller terms.

Walmart Marketplace Seller Returns

Identify the seller on the listing or order, separately from fulfillment. Seller-fulfilled policy normally gives at least 30 days starting seven days after shipment, with shorter-category/final-sale exceptions. Timely eligible requests must be honored if completed later; sellers may allow longer, and Walmart’s seller policy makes the seller pay for authorized return shipping.

Damaged or wrong goods may qualify for replacement; declining gets a refund. These rules exclude store returns. Some seller returns may get refunds without sending items back, only when the return confirmation says so.

Eligible Marketplace collectibles and luxury must start online within 14 days of receipt. Corporate procedure requires all boxes, papers, warranty cards, tags and grading, authenticity and appraisal documents. New apparel and accessories require unworn, unaltered, tagged condition. Returns can be rejected if the item is damaged, worn, unsealed or missing required material. Photograph condition; use the prepaid label; Walmart recommends insuring Marketplace items above $600 before shipping. Luxury covers apparel, shoes, accessories, jewelry and watches above $300, plus fine art, loose gems, gemstones, collectibles and memorabilia at any value. Walmart-shipped luxury over $300 starts through your account or Customer Care within 90 days of purchase. For the electronics deadline conflict, see above; see Amazon’s seller-return guide.

Does Walmart charge a restocking fee?

Walmart-sold goods have no published universal zero or flat restocking fee. Marketplace seller policy permits up to 20% of item price on eligible return-exempt goods not in original/sellable condition; check listing terms and the appliance conflict above.

Example: Assume a hypothetical qualifying $500 Marketplace item, not in sellable condition, with the maximum fee. $500 × 20% = $100, leaving $400 of item price, excluding tax, shipping and discounts.

When Will You Get Your Walmart Refund?

Card refunds typically arrive within seven days; receipted store cash is immediate, per corporate policy and Refunds help. Three clocks:

Route 1. Deadline/action 2. Retailer processing 3. Money reaches you
Receipted store return Category window At register Cash immediate; gift card/Balance up to 3 hours; card typically within 7 days
Walmart-sold mail Category window; cutoff action Not published Not published Card typically within 7 days; start trigger Not published
Marketplace seller Initiate within applicable window Corporate: within 2 business days after receipt Up to 7 business days, financial institution dependent
Walmart-shipped luxury over $300 Account/contact within 90 days of purchase Authentication targeted within 2 business days of receipt; refund processing up to 7 business days after validation Not published

Corporate policy gives sellers two business days after receipt to process refunds; Marketplace help says store drops process within two business days of return-center receipt; online returns, on carrier scan; seller policy says refund at store receipt. The pages word it differently: do not expect counter payment; retain tracking and check Purchase History or help.

Refunds normally use original payment. Walmart’s policy says card refunds without a receipt may take up to seven business days. If card refund fails: stores issue a gift card or Walmart Balance; online, Walmart Balance. Split payments may refund to one tender where lawful; some PayPal purchases allow cash or gift card. Original shipping refunds vary; criteria unpublished. Ask first.

Failed age-verified delivery: corporate policy says up to seven days, while Marketplace help says ten business days. Allow ten business days; check the order or help. Delivered alcohol remains nonreturnable. Connecticut, Massachusetts and Rhode Island sales-tax refunds need timely receipts with valid transaction numbers, Walmart says.

Refund timing by payment method

Walmart’s refund table gives these estimates:

Payment Timing
Cash/check Immediate cash
Gift card/Walmart Balance Up to 3 hours
Debit/credit card Typically within 7 days
PayPal, OnePay Later, Pay by Bank Typically within 7 days
Walmart Cash spent Up to 3 hours; specialist help says about 24
EBT Cash Immediate

Receipted PIN-debit purchases can receive cash under Walmart’s table.

Corporate/Refunds help gives Walmart Cash up to three hours; Walmart Cash help words it differently at about 24 hours. Allow 24 hours; then check your balance and order with Walmart. Earned rewards reverse; benefit payments have separate restrictions.

SNAP, WIC and EBT purchases

Walmart’s benefit rules give WIC same-item exchange, without cash/gift card except formal WIC-agency documentation; SNAP gets original SNAP EBT refund or same-item exchange, never cash/gift card. Without receipt, WIC/SNAP-eligible items get same-item exchange only.

Corporate/Refunds help says EBT card refunds typically take seven days; the Free Returns hub words it differently at generally three hours. Plan for seven days; check the benefit account and order with Walmart.

Damaged, Defective and Recalled Walmart Items

Eligible damaged or defective Walmart.com goods may qualify for refund or replacement by mail or store; start in the app or Purchase History. Walmart’s guarantees include:

  • Fresh Guarantee: produce, flowers, meat, bakery, deli, dairy and frozen goods with receipt. Some refunds need no physical return; never mail online perishables.
  • Automotive batteries: original purchaser, battery testing bad within 90 days; afterward, exchange follows warranty terms.
  • Recalls: follow the specific notice. Walmart-sold remedies may involve refund/credit or manufacturer repair/replacement; Marketplace follows manufacturer/seller instructions.

Appliance problems need two-day action; warranty and legal rights are separate.

What rights do you have beyond Walmart’s policy?

Walmart’s voluntary window is separate from legal and warranty rights. The FTC Cooling-Off Rule does not cover ordinary purchases made entirely online or at a permanent store. Warranty remedies depend on terms/state law and may allow repair before refund.

For covered unshipped orders, the FTC requires promised shipping time or normally 30 days if unspecified; delays require consent or cancellation/full refund, not gift-card-only reimbursement. Keep records; these rights differ from return approval.

Walmart Return Policy Mistakes to Avoid

  • Giving everything 90 days: check the TV’s 30-day or phone’s 14-day category.
  • Delaying appliance action: start within two days of accepted delivery.
  • Assuming Marketplace electronics get 30 days: act within 14 and confirm.
  • Mailing on the last day: drop off early; keep tracking.
  • Sending fuel or omitting the original battery: drain fuel, include the battery and follow hazardous-item instructions.
  • Going ID-only first: recover Purchase History/card proof to preserve original-payment refund options.

This Walmart return policy guide flags conflicts; Walmart decides approval; managers cannot accept ineligible goods. See how StoreReturners checks policies for the verification approach.

FAQ

Does Walmart+ give you a longer return window?

Walmart+ has no published merchandise-window extension. Its return benefit is pickup for eligible purchases, locations and active members when offered in Purchase History. Check the item’s own deadline before scheduling: membership does not turn a 14-day phone or 30-day electronics purchase into an ordinary 90-day return.

Can I return a TV to Walmart after 30 days?

A Walmart-sold TV normally falls under the 30-day consumer-electronics rule. An eligible purchase from October 1–December 31, 2026 can use January 31, 2027 if its order confirms the holiday extension. Marketplace electronics may get only 14 days; confirm the seller and return-by date rather than assuming holiday eligibility.

Can I return something to Walmart after 90 days?

Only when another rule applies: perennials, shrubs and trees get 365 days; some registry periods are longer; private-brand package promises can extend eligibility. A battery warranty may provide exchange beyond 90 days under its terms. Managers can refuse eligible returns and cannot accept ineligible items merely as an exception.

Do I need to include the original battery?

Yes. Walmart requires the original rechargeable battery when the item was supplied with one, including tools, laptops, e-bikes and lawn equipment. Gather it before returning. For fuel-powered equipment, drain fuel and follow the offered method; never mail an item containing fuel or remove Freon from air conditioners.

Will Walmart refund my original shipping charge?

Not always. Walmart does not publish general criteria for refunding original shipping, so ask about that charge for your order before returning. Walmart Photo specifically refunds applicable shipping for incorrect, damaged or defective products, subject to adjustments; other Photo return reasons do not qualify. A free return label is separate.

What happens to Walmart Cash I earned on a returned item?

Under the Walmart return policy, Walmart reverses earned rewards. That can create a negative Walmart Cash balance, which future awards offset; Walmart says it will not require repayment of that negative balance. This differs from refunding Walmart Cash spent, which has conflicting three-hour and approximately 24-hour estimates above.
