Best Buy Return Policy: 15 or 60 Days, Fees and Holiday Dates

The Best Buy return policy in the US gives most products sold by Best Buy 15 days from receipt, or 60 days for My Best Buy Plus and Total members. Activatable phones and devices get 14 days (Verizon 30). Items from Marketplace sellers generally get the standard 15 days, even for paid members.

Best Buy returns at a glance

  • Most direct purchases: 15 days, or 60 for Plus/Total, starting the day received.
  • Best Buy’s October 27, 2026 holiday announcement gives most October 30–December 31, 2026 purchases until January 15, 2027; Plus/Total members get January 31, 2027.
  • Listed restocking fees are $45 for activatable devices except prepaid phones, or 15% for cameras, drones and other categories; unopened items are exempt.
  • Eligible mail returns ship free with the prepaid label; packages must ship within the return period.
  • Mailed refunds take 7–10 business days to process after receipt, then the bank may take up to 10 more days.

Best Buy’s return and exchange policy supplies the ordinary rules below; its holiday announcement supplies the seasonal dates.

How Long Is the Best Buy Return Window?

Best Buy gives most direct purchases 15 days, or 60 for Plus/Total members, from the day received. The policy covers online and store purchases, including new, clearance, open-box, refurbished and pre-owned goods, including Best Buy Outlet, Education and Business purchases, which have some routes of their own.

Best Buy doesn’t specify calendar versus business days, a cutoff time or time zone. Return a few days early; no extra store-return grace period is stated. If you’re still deciding where to buy electronics, the Micro Center return policy is the closest specialist comparison.

Which Products Get a Different Return Period?

Best Buy’s category rules override the most-products window:

  • Activatable devices: capable-of-activation phones, cellular tablets, hotspots and cellular wearables get 14 days; Verizon devices get 30, regardless of membership.
  • Pet and hearing products: litter boxes get 90 days; pet-training devices and hearing aids get 60 for everyone. Hearing amplifiers follow the standard 15-day policy.
  • Decorations and Office: Halloween/Christmas Decorations get 15 days and Microsoft Office 30, including for paid members.
  • Services/subscriptions: antivirus and Microsoft 365 follow PlanTerms. Contact Best Buy about an unused service that can’t be returned in store.

For a big-box comparison on TVs, laptops and cameras, see the Costco return policy.

Does Printing a Return Label Stop the Clock?

No. Best Buy requires the package to ship during the return period; label creation isn’t the stated completion step. Postmark, first-scan, warehouse-arrival and post-initiation grace rules are unpublished. Drop the parcel at an authorized location several days early.

Best Buy Holiday Returns 2026: Announced Dates

Best Buy’s October 27, 2026 holiday announcement says most purchases made October 30–December 31, 2026 can be returned through January 15, 2027, or January 31, 2027 for Plus/Total members. The announcement uses purchase dates; the ordinary policy starts at receipt.

The main policy gives members 60 days from receipt, while the announcement gives January 31, 2027 for the holiday purchase range. The pages word it differently and don’t explain how the deadlines interact. A late-December delivery could have an ordinary window beyond January 31. Treat January 31 as the deadline for paid-member purchases in that range and check the order details or receipt for Best Buy’s item-specific date.

Example: Assume a Standard customer buys an item on November 10, 2026 that Best Buy confirms is among the announcement’s eligible “most purchases.” The announced deadline is January 15, 2027, beyond the ordinary 15 days; for a Plus/Total member, the announcement gives January 31, 2027. These are published dates, not calculated deadlines.

What the 2026 Announcement Leaves Open

As of October 28, 2026, Best Buy hadn’t published detailed 2026 exclusions, whether Marketplace items qualify, or whether a mailed return must be shipped or received by the holiday deadline. Don’t assume holiday dates override activatable-device or other category rules. The main policy gives Halloween/Christmas Decorations 15 days for everyone without explaining the seasonal overlap.

The Holiday FAQ still describes last season. Check order details and ship or visit a store several days before the announced deadline; check the seller too, because Marketplace purchases have separate limits.

Best Buy Marketplace Returns: When the Seller Sets the Rules

Marketplace products generally get the Standard 15 days from delivery, with no Plus/Total extension. Look for the seller name above Add to cart, then check the seller profile and order return options.

The main returns policy and Marketplace FAQ say Marketplace products generally follow the Standard policy unless otherwise noted. That means 15 days for most products and the category period for items such as activatable devices. The website terms word it differently: returns made to the seller are subject to the seller’s policy, while certain products returned to Best Buy follow Best Buy’s policy. The pages don’t say which wins if a seller’s own terms differ. Check the seller profile and the order’s return options. If they show different terms, act by the earlier deadline and ask the seller or Best Buy to confirm.

Many non-truck items can go to a Best Buy store, where Best Buy inspects, refunds and ships them to the seller. Size/product limits apply; Puerto Rico Best Buy stores and all Pacific Sales Kitchen & Home stores are excluded. Eligible mail returns use the account’s free prepaid label to the seller; don’t assume every seller uses FedEx.

For truck deliveries or major appliances, notify the seller during the window, then schedule front-door pickup. Report damaged, defective or incorrect goods through the order. Restocking restrictions apply; opened physical entertainment is nonreturnable. Marketplace exchange service and refund-and-reorder mechanics are unpublished; ask the seller before arranging a replacement. Gift refunds go to the purchaser. If you also buy from third-party sellers on Amazon, the Amazon return policy guide covers its seller returns.

What Can’t You Return to Best Buy?

Best Buy excludes some products from purchase onward and others once opened, completed or delivered. The policy’s nonreturnable lists distinguish those triggers.

Nonreturnable once purchased:

  • Custom/personalized orders and Final Sale items.
  • Non-subscription digital content and digital gaming, except Microsoft Office.
  • Codes and prepaid cards, including third-party gift cards and prepaid phone cards.
  • Vehicle key fobs, memberships and trading cards.
  • Products with capacity of at least 300 Wh; golf carts, utility terrain vehicles, electric bikes/mopeds and plumbing items.

Nonreturnable once opened, completed or delivered, as applicable:

  • Products that interact with bodily fluids, SIM kits and LEGO products.

  • Completed services; delivered home standby generators/whole-home backup.

  • Marketplace physical entertainment.

  • Consumables: batteries, cleaning agents, oils, fuel, filters, cleaners, supplements, test kits, ink and 3D printer filament.

  • Any channel: fully regulated hazardous materials, such as flammable liquids and gases, can’t be returned through Best Buy’s store, mail or pickup routes.

Membership cancellation contracts and received-faulty procedures are separate. Paying a restocking fee doesn’t make an excluded item returnable.

Opened Video Games, Movies and Software

Best Buy allows only an identical-item exchange for opened physical software, movies, music, video games, books, game guides and sheet music bought directly from Best Buy. Marketplace versions are nonreturnable once opened. A separate paid-member entertainment deadline and exchange-clock reset are unpublished.

Condition Rules: Like-New, Complete and Wiped

Best Buy requires ordinary returns to be like-new. Its condition and packaging rules allow refusal of damaged, unsanitary, dented or scratched goods, or goods missing major contents.

  • Include original contents, packaging and accessories; missing items can cause refusal or a nonrefundable deduction of an unpublished amount.
  • Keep apparel unworn and unlaundered, with original tags attached.
  • Remove personal data and unlink connected devices from cloud accounts and other devices.
  • Include the original rechargeable battery.
  • Expect to forfeit the benefit if returning only part of a discounted bundle or free-item promotion.

Goods received damaged follow the fault-reporting route below; otherwise-returnable goods may still carry a category restocking fee.

Does Best Buy Charge a Restocking Fee?

Yes, Best Buy charges restocking fees on listed categories, subject to exemptions in its fee policy.

Fee Applies to Exemptions
$45 per device Activatable devices other than prepaid phones Unopened; exempt purchase locations; where prohibited by law
15% of item purchase price Drones; digital cameras/lenses; camcorders/action cameras; golf launch monitors; premium/super/mobility scooters; electric wheelchairs; leg/body recovery systems; projectors/screens; premium cold tubs/saunas; special orders Same exemptions

Best Buy’s own location exemption lists Alabama, Colorado, Hawaii, Iowa, Mississippi, Ohio, Oklahoma and South Carolina. This is the retailer’s policy list, not a statement that each state bans fees. Fees are taxed in select states. Plunge/Sun Home manufacturer help also states a 15% fee; check the main-policy exemptions.

Example: Assume an opened, otherwise-returnable digital camera purchased directly for $800 in a nonexempt state, with no other exemption. $800 × 15% = $120 restocking fee; unopened, the fee is $0. Taxes, delivery, discounts and missing parts are excluded from this calculation.

A universal defective-item waiver, general pickup charge and universal exchange fee are unpublished. Report faults before arranging an ordinary return and ask about charges. Shoppers weighing another big-box store for the same electronics can compare the Walmart return policy.

How to Return to Best Buy: Store, Mail or Pickup

Best Buy offers store returns, eligible prepaid-label mail returns and arranged pickup routes. Follow the official instructions: return eligible goods in like-new condition and complete the required action within the window.

At a Best Buy Store

Most direct online and store purchases can go to a Best Buy store, subject to category and location exceptions.

  1. Pack the item with all contents, accessories and original packaging.
  2. Bring the receipt or packing slip, if supplied, and payment credit card for faster processing.
  3. Use the US store directory and take the return to customer service.

Check the special-location rules below before transporting goods; a nearby store may not handle that purchase.

By Mail With the Prepaid Label

Eligible direct returns ship free with Best Buy’s prepaid FedEx label.

  1. Open order lookup/start a return or your account; sign-in may be required.
  2. Obtain and print the prepaid label for the eligible order.
  3. Pack the goods securely and attach the label.
  4. Drop the parcel at an authorized location and ship during the return period.

Major appliances, TVs over 50 inches, kegerators and SodaStream makers can’t use shipping returns; lithium/specialty-battery shipping limits also apply, and fully regulated hazardous materials can’t go back through any Best Buy return channel. No return shipments are accepted from outside the US. Original-delivery refunds and reimbursement for a self-purchased label are unpublished; check alternatives before paying for shipping.

Appliances, Large TVs and Heavy Items

For direct appliances or truck deliveries, contact Best Buy at 1-888-237-8289 for return/pickup options. Inspect appliances before accepting delivery and refuse if there’s a problem. After acceptance, or taking an appliance home yourself, report damage or defects immediately to that number rather than the store; no numeric reporting limit is published.

Burrow, Lovesac, Plunge and Sun Home have manufacturer-return routes. Covered Plunge/Sun Home products require proof and have 15 days, or 60 for Plus/Total, from receipt; don’t bring them to a store. Direct pickup completion deadlines are unpublished, so call early rather than assuming arranging pickup freezes the window.

Phones, Hotspots and Carrier Contracts

Activatable devices get 14 days, or 30 for Verizon, with a $45 restocking fee except prepaid phones and stated exemptions. Wipe personal data and unlink accounts first.

Returning hardware doesn’t cancel carrier service or eliminate carrier charges. Tell store staff about cancellation or call Best Buy Mobile at 1-877-702-2211, 6 a.m.–midnight CT. For Marketplace devices, notify the seller through the order.

Pacific Sales, Magnolia, Partner Sites and Business Orders

Pacific Sales Kitchen & Home/Outlet purchases return only to those stores. Magnolia/Premium Design Center goods go to Best Buy stores with that center.

Manufacturer/partner-site purchases fulfilled by Best Buy follow the partner’s policy. Partner-store pickup returns may be accepted at Best Buy, with no in-store exchange; the partner generally refunds within 7–10 business days after acceptance. Best Buy’s Amazon/eBay stores and YourHealth.BestBuy.com have their own policies. Business orders follow the Business returns policy.

Can You Return to Best Buy Without a Receipt?

Best Buy can often recover a lost receipt; a genuinely no-proof return may be denied or limited. Use its receipt-copy help first:

  1. Store credit-card purchase: bring the payment card to customer service for lookup.
  2. My Best Buy member: provide your phone number, email or member ID; call 1-888-237-8289 for a store receipt copy.
  3. My Best Buy member with the membership ID linked to a BestBuy.com account: go to Orders and purchases → See details & receipt → Print receipt.
  4. Online guest: use order status with the order number, last name and phone number.

Copies aren’t available for cash/check purchases by nonmembers or purchases more than ten years old. Without proof, Best Buy may require an email address; any reimbursement is store credit without state sales tax or fees. ID requirements and the credit valuation formula are unpublished; ask before relying on acceptance.

Who Gets the Refund When You Return a Gift?

Under the gift-return rules, a direct Best Buy gift returned in store gives the returning person store credit for the purchase price. Mailing a direct gift credits the original purchaser and emails them. A Marketplace gift return also credits and emails the purchaser, regardless of the direct-store gift rule.

Gift receipts can be printed using Print gift receipt, under the same membership-ID-linked account condition. Choose the channel before returning: mailing a gift back credits and emails the giver.

How Long Does a Best Buy Refund Take?

Best Buy or the seller processes mailed returns within 7–10 business days after receiving them; the bank may take up to 10 additional days. The refund policy doesn’t label those bank days “business days.”

Clock Mail return In-store return
Return window 15/60 or category days from receipt; ship within period Applicable window from receipt; return within period
Retailer/seller processing 7–10 business days after return receipt Not published
Bank posting Up to 10 additional days after processing Not published

Shipping transit is Not published. Don’t treat the processing period as a guaranteed drop-off-to-money total.

Payment or situation Where the refund goes Published timing/limit
Usual card/original payment Original method, subject to exceptions Mail stages above

Gifts Direct in-store: recipient credit; mailed direct/Marketplace: purchaser See gift routing above
BNPL/installments; other split-tender handling Not published Not published

For unpublished tender details, ask Best Buy before choosing a refund over an exchange.

Exchanges and Defective Items

Best Buy offers a same-item exchange for direct purchases within the applicable period. Cross-model swaps, replacement stock guarantees and clock resets are unpublished. Don’t count on an exchange creating another full return window.

For direct goods received shipping-damaged, defective or incorrect, Best Buy’s replacement procedure requires return within the period; call 1-888-237-8289 for special mail instructions. For Marketplace goods, notify the seller through the order, obtain the prepaid label and ship during the period; heavy goods use seller pickup. Appliances follow the immediate phone-reporting route above.

No guaranteed late-return exception, unlimited unopened-item grace period or extra defective-item goodwill window is published. Contact Best Buy promptly; after the window, check the product’s written warranty coverage and claim process, a separate remedy described in FTC warranty guidance.

Does Federal Law Give You Extra Return Time?

Generally, no: the FTC Cooling-Off Rule excludes online/mail/phone sales and sales negotiated at the seller’s permanent premises. Ordinary Best Buy shopping doesn’t gain a general three-day return right from that rule.

For delayed online orders, separate FTC shipping protections require an offer to agree to delay or cancel for a full refund; unshipped orders require a full refund rather than credit.

My Best Buy Plus and Total: Returns vs Cancellation

Plus/Total gives most eligible direct purchases 60 days, excluding Marketplace and subject to category rules. Whether joining after purchase extends an existing item’s window is unpublished; check the order rather than buying membership expecting retroactive eligibility.

Memberships appear on the merchandise nonreturnable list, but cancellation refunds follow the separate Plus contract and Total contract.

Tier Merchandise return window Cancellation grace period Catch
Plus Most eligible direct goods: 60 days 60 days from initial/renewal purchase Benefits/limited-supply items may reduce refund; later prorated refunds may have deductions
Total Most eligible direct goods: 60 days Annual: 60 days; initial monthly: 20 days; monthly renewal: 3 days Deductions possible; cancellation immediately ends included protection plans

Cancel Plus by phone at 1-888-237-8289, at a store or through the online profile. Total’s contract also provides later prorated refunds with deductions and may offer separately paid protection continuation. Check those consequences before canceling.

Mistakes to Avoid With the Return Policy Best Buy Publishes

  • Counting from order placement: ordinary windows start the day received.
  • Printing without shipping: a label alone doesn’t satisfy the mail instructions.
  • Assuming Marketplace gets 60 days: paid-member extensions don’t apply.
  • Opening a camera or drone unnecessarily: an otherwise-eligible return can incur 15%, subject to exemptions.
  • Returning a phone without canceling service: carrier charges remain a separate responsibility.
  • Mailing a gift expecting recipient credit: the purchaser receives the credit and notification.

This guide covers Best Buy’s published policy and federal guidance, rather than state-specific law; see how StoreReturners verifies policies, or browse more US store return guides.

FAQ

Can I return opened headphones or a laptop to Best Buy?

Generally yes, if Best Buy’s product-specific rules allow it and the goods remain like-new, complete and within the applicable window. Most direct products get 15 days, or 60 for Plus/Total. Products that interact with bodily fluids are nonreturnable once opened; check the policy’s exclusions before assuming an opened product qualifies.

Can I return a Best Buy order from outside the US?

No. Best Buy does not accept return shipments from outside the United States. Its prepaid-label route therefore isn’t an international return option. Before sending anything across a border or buying your own label, contact Best Buy about your order; the policy does not promise reimbursement for a self-purchased consumer return label.

Do I need the original box to return to Best Buy?

Best Buy instructs customers to include original packaging, contents and accessories. Missing packaging can lead to refusal or a nonrefundable deduction, so a boxless return isn’t guaranteed. The deduction amount is unpublished. Gather the accessories and contact Best Buy before traveling if the box or a major component is missing.

Can I return a Best Buy gift card or a prepaid phone card?

Best Buy’s policy lists codes and prepaid cards among nonreturnable purchases, including third-party gift cards and prepaid phone cards. Don’t confuse returning a card with receiving a merchandise refund: an eligible return’s Best Buy Gift Card-funded portion goes onto a new Best Buy Gift Card or e-Gift Card.

Can I get a refund on an unused service or Microsoft 365 subscription?

The Best Buy return policy directs services and subscriptions, including Microsoft 365 and antivirus, to their individual PlanTerms contracts. For an unused service that cannot be returned in store, contact Best Buy. Microsoft Office’s separate 30-day rule doesn’t establish a Microsoft 365 refund window.
