Boots Return Policy: 35 Days, No-Receipt Rules and Refunds
The Boots return policy in the UK allows 35 days for eligible unused, unopened items with seals intact; Boots.com orders count from receipt. Qualifying online orders go back free to UK Boots stores or through Boots’ prepaid Royal Mail route, with refunds to the original payment method (Boots returns, returns form).
Key facts
- Eligible unwanted items have a 35-day window; online orders count from receipt, Boots does not publish when the clock starts for in-store purchases.
- Qualifying Boots.com returns are free in-store or through the prepaid Royal Mail label at a Post Office; collections and parcel lockers are excluded.
- Boots asks for a receipt for store returns and publishes no ordinary lost-receipt alternative.
- Medicines, perishables, personalised gifts and opened or used cosmetics are excluded unless faulty; specific beauty guarantees have separate conditions.
- Postal processing starts at warehouse arrival, with up to 14 days after the return email for processing; money then takes 3–5 working days to appear, or up to 30 days for PayPal.
This guide covers products sold by Boots UK Limited in UK stores and on Boots.com, including approved-supplier dispatches. Partner shops have separate policies. Browse more UK store guides.

How Long Is the Boots Return Window?
35 days is Boots’ standard voluntary window for eligible unwanted goods. Boots publishes no longer period for Advantage Card, Parenting Club, Over 60s or Student members (Advantage Card terms).
When does the 35-day clock start?
Boots.com orders count from receiving the order. The UK returns form uses the same starting point for returns taken to a store. Boots does not define the starting event for ordinary in-store purchases.
Calendar versus working days, day-zero counting and split deliveries are undefined. Because of these gaps, no exact last day can be worked out, so return several days early.
Does posting on day 35 count?
Boots does not say whether label creation, parcel drop-off, carrier scanning or warehouse arrival meets the postal deadline. Post well before day 35 and keep proof of postage. For eligible online goods, store handover within the window is the clearer documented action.
Is there a Boots Christmas 2026 return extension?
No Christmas 2026 extension with eligible purchase dates or an extended return deadline was found on Boots pages checked on 28 October 2026. Some older guides still quote an undated October–January rule. Treat the standard 35 days as the rule until Boots publishes dates, and check Boots’ returns page before relying on a holiday date.
For gifts bought across several shops, compare Next’s Christmas return rules separately.
What Condition Must Boots Returns Be In?
Boots requires ordinary unwanted returns to be unused and unopened, with seals and cellophane intact. Keep original packaging resalable, include accessories and paperwork, and avoid manufacturer registration or adding personal information (Boots’ condition requirements).
Boots publishes no universal tags rule. Keep packaging intact; a removed sale tag alone does not establish eligibility.
Multipacks, free items and 3-for-2 deals
Boots requires multipack items to come back together, including any free item supplied with the order. Individual items from a 3-for-2 offer can be returned, but the refund uses the promotional price paid.
How to Return to Boots: Pick Your Route
Check the receipt or dispatch note before packing: supplier goods and online orders placed in-store have separate return routes.
Returning a Boots store purchase
Eligible store purchases can go to any UK Boots store for a refund or replacement.
- Keep the goods in the required condition.
- Take them with the receipt to a UK Boots store; use the official store locator to find a branch.
Boots does not publish a fee for this route. Don’t leave the receipt at home: Boots publishes no lost-receipt alternative for store returns.
Returning a Boots.com order to a store
Qualifying Boots.com orders have free UK store returns within 35 days of receipt.
- Complete the Boots returns form.
- Take the form and goods to the store.
Bring your receipt or order details as well; the form does not say it replaces a receipt. Check for supplier dispatch before travelling, because those goods go directly to the supplier.
Returning a Boots.com order by Royal Mail
Qualifying Boots-dispatched online goods can use Boots’ free prepaid postal route.
- Complete the returns form.
- Generate a label through the Royal Mail return link supplied by Boots.
- Print the label at home, or show the QR code at a Post Office.
- Enclose the completed form with the goods and hand over the parcel.
- Keep proof of postage as your sending record.
Boots does not accept Royal Mail collections or parcel-locker returns, even if generic carrier pages offer them. If the label link doesn’t work, contact Boots Customer Care on 0345 609 0055 rather than booking a courier yourself.
Online orders placed in a Boots store
Online orders placed in-store must return to a UK Boots store, for a refund only.
- Complete the returns form.
- Bring the goods, till receipt and form, plus the confirmation email if available.
The confirmation email does not replace the receipt. The returns form says qualifying ordered items can go back to a Boots store free of charge. Don’t post this order back under the ordinary online instructions.
Items dispatched by approved suppliers
Supplier-dispatched goods go directly to the original supplier under the dispatch-note instructions.
- Find the return instructions on the supplied paperwork.
- Use the approved-supplier directory for supplier details.
- Send the goods as instructed and keep proof of sending.
Return costs are unpublished; ask the supplier before arranging postage. Supplier-dispatched gifts bought by someone else are returnable within 35 days of receiving the order, with refunds to the original payment. Sending supplier goods to Boots may delay the refund.
Heavy, bulky and partner-shop orders
For heavy or bulky goods, contact Customer Care with order details before arranging transport. Collection and fees are unpublished.
Partner shops, including Boots Kitchen Appliances, follow their own policies. Check the partner named on the confirmation or receipt and use its instructions. Avoid assuming either route inherits free Royal Mail returns.
Are Boots Returns Free?
Yes, for qualifying Boots.com goods returned in-store or through the authorised Royal Mail label. Boots does not publish supplier, bulky, partner or independently booked courier charges, or a general restocking-fee schedule and fee basis. Ask before committing to a charge.
Original delivery-charge treatment under the voluntary policy is also unpublished. Whole-order statutory cancellation has a separate standard-delivery refund rule, explained under consumer rights below.
Can You Return to Boots Without a Receipt?
Boots asks for a receipt for store returns and publishes no ordinary lost-receipt route. Boots promises no Advantage Card lookups, bank-statement acceptance, gift-receipt credit, ID route or receipt-free goodwill refund. Contact Customer Care before travelling if your receipt is missing.
Online return forms and order details do not establish a universal receipt waiver. For faulty goods, GOV.UK’s proof-of-purchase guidance allows other evidence, such as a bank statement or packaging establishing the purchase. That does not guarantee acceptance for change-of-mind returns. The recall below has its own receipt waiver.
The Boots Paracetamol recall exception
Safety: do not take the recalled tablets. Boots’ recall notice covers Boots Paracetamol 500mg 16s, item 81-99-922, batch 241005, expiry 12/2029. Return this batch to a store for a full refund, with or without a receipt. The waiver does not extend to unrelated products or ordinary cosmetics returns.
Can You Return Opened Make-Up to Boots?
Normally no: Boots excludes opened or used cosmetics unless faulty. Two specific guarantees have separate conditions; neither establishes blanket acceptance of used beauty products. Shoppers comparing premium-beauty purchases can also read John Lewis’ return rules.
Premium Beauty Money Back Guarantee
Boots’ Premium Beauty guarantee terms allow up to 35 days from purchase if unsatisfied with a qualifying selected-store purchase from 14 October 2026. This clock starts at purchase, unlike Boots.com’s receipt-based window.
Eligibility requires all of the following:
- Service by Beauty Crew or a Beauty Specialist.
- An MBG barcode scanned at purchase.
- The original till receipt showing that barcode.
- Return in person to any Boots store; online purchases are excluded.
Covered categories are cosmetics, premium and mass skincare and haircare, fragrance, and beauty and hair accessories. No7 and Electrical Beauty are excluded. Boots publishes neither an acceptable amount of use nor an end date. Ask about your product’s condition before relying on the guarantee.
Benefit Pore Care Money Back Guarantee
The Benefit Pore Care guarantee provides three months from purchase, with proof, returned in-store to the retailer you bought from. Only Get Unblocked, Deep Retreat, Tight N Toned, Good Cleanup, Speedy Smooth and Smooth Sip qualify; promotional kits are excluded. This is not a three-month rule for other cosmetics.
What Boots Won’t Take Back
Boots’ standard unwanted-goods exclusions are:
- Medicines, unless faulty.
- Perishables, including food and baby milk, unless faulty.
- Personalised gifts, unless faulty.
- Opened or used cosmetics, unless faulty, subject to specific guarantees.
Partner-shop policies and Activity Superstore gift-experience instructions also sit outside the ordinary route. This guide covers Boots’ published policy; Boots decides each return, and your statutory rights are separate.
How Long Do Boots Refunds Take?
Boots allows up to 14 days after the postal return email for processing, followed by 3–5 working days for account posting; PayPal can take up to 30 days. These are separate stages, not a guaranteed total from posting (returns form, refund guidance).
| Stage | What happens | Official time |
|---|---|---|
| Return window | Eligible unwanted goods go back | 35 days; online starts on receipt |
| Boots processing: post | Processing starts at warehouse arrival; return email provides the stated processing trigger | Up to 14 days after email; day unit and arrival-to-email delay unpublished |
| Boots processing: store | Store refund processing | Not published |
| Supplier processing | Supplier receives goods, contacts Boots, then refund follows; Boots’ pages word this differently (see below) | Within 14 days under the stated sequence; supplier notification delay unpublished |
| Money appears | Money or Advantage points appear after refund | 3–5 working days; PayPal up to 30 days |
Do not add these stages together. Refunds use the original payment method; gifts do not automatically produce recipient credit.
Advantage points, points payments and eGift vouchers
Boots’ Advantage Card terms remove points earned on a refunded product from the account, rather than deducting their cash value from the money refund. Faulty goods paid for with points can go to any UK store; appropriate points are credited back, with no cash refund.
Boots.com eGift-voucher payments return to the same voucher account under the eGift terms. Split-payment allocation is unpublished; ask Customer Care to confirm your allocation.
Who refunds a supplier-dispatched return?
Boots’ pages word this differently. The main returns page says the supplier receives the goods, contacts Boots and Boots issues the refund within 14 days; another answer on the supplier page says Boots cannot offer a refund or return for supplier goods and directs shoppers to the supplier.
Follow the dispatch note for your order’s binding instructions, return directly to the supplier and keep sending proof. Contact the supplier first if the refund does not arrive, then Boots Customer Care on 0345 609 0055. Do not assume the general replacement route applies.
Exchanges and Replacements at Boots
Boots store purchases can receive a refund or replacement. The returns form offers like-for-like replacement; Boots refunds instead if unavailable and sends replacement updates by email.
Boots publishes no general different-product exchange, price-protection rule or exchange fee. If you want a different item, ask for a refund and buy it separately.
Faulty Boots Items and Your Consumer Rights
For faulty, damaged, wrong or missing goods, contact Boots Customer Services with details and photo or video evidence: 0345 609 0055 for Boots.com orders, 0345 070 8090 for stores. The voluntary 35 days is not a legal cut-off.
Under the Consumer Rights Act 2015, faulty goods normally have a 30-day short-term right to reject, counted from the day after ownership/possession transfer, delivery and any required installation have all occurred. Perishables can have shorter periods. On valid rejection, the trader bears reasonable return costs, except personal return to where possession was obtained, and refunds without undue delay within 14 days of agreeing entitlement, normally through the original payment means without a fee (sections 22 and 20).
Supplier paperwork may mention a manufacturer warranty, but that does not replace rights against the seller, Boots UK Limited. For non-faulty shop purchases, change-of-mind refunds depend on the voluntary policy. Compare Specsavers’ returns and faulty-item guidance for another UK health retailer.
After that, repair or replacement generally comes first, within a reasonable time, without significant inconvenience and at the trader’s necessary cost; impossible or disproportionate remedies can be refused. A fault arising within six months is generally presumed present at delivery unless proved otherwise. Later, the shopper may need evidence; six months is not an unconditional return window. GOV.UK says customers have up to six years to make a claim (five years in Scotland). That is a time limit for bringing a claim, not a promise that every product lasts that long (GOV.UK guidance).
What if Boots refuses a fault claim or a refund is late?
- Voluntary returns: check the refund-stage table. Fault rejections and cancellations: the 14-day legal refund deadlines in this section apply; Boots’ estimates don’t extend them.
- Call 0345 609 0055 for Boots.com orders or 0345 070 8090 for stores, or write via Email Us on Boots’ contact page. For supplier-dispatched items, contact the supplier first, then Boots.
- Keep the receipt or order number, fault photos or video, proof of postage including the tracking number, and all correspondence.
- Still unresolved? Use the Citizens Advice consumer service. The page gives England advice; select your nation elsewhere for the appropriate advice. Advisers cannot complain or take legal action for you.
Cancelling a Boots.com order under the 14-day rule
Eligible distance purchases have 14 days from the day after receipt to cancel, then 14 days after notification to send goods back. The Consumer Contracts Regulations 2013 provide this separately from Boots’ 35 days (Citizens Advice explanation).
Whole-order cancellation includes standard outbound delivery, but not the premium upgrade. Refunds are due without undue delay, within 14 days of goods returning or earlier sending proof where collection was not offered, using the same payment means unless agreed otherwise, without a reimbursement fee. Excess handling can reduce the refund.
Exceptions include personalised goods, rapidly perishable goods and health/hygiene-sealed goods unsealed after delivery.
Boots Return Policy Mistakes That Cost You Money
- Booking a collection or locker: Boots excludes both from its Royal Mail route; use the Post Office option.
- Using the wrong clock or posting too late: online orders count from receipt, but posting on day 35 is not confirmed sufficient.
- Opening beauty products expecting automatic acceptance: ordinary exclusions apply unless the specific guarantee conditions or faulty-goods rights apply.
- Sending supplier goods to Boots: follow the dispatch note to avoid refund delays.
- Misreading refund stages or points reversals: processing and account posting differ; earned points come off the points account, not the cash refund.

FAQ
Can I return a Boots gift experience?
Unbooked gift experiences use the Activity Superstore instructions supplied with the experience, rather than Boots’ ordinary parcel route. If the experience has already been booked, contact the booking line instead, as Boots’ supplier page directs. Check the booking status first so you approach the correct service with the relevant details.
Does an Advantage Card give me longer to return items?
Boots publishes no extended return window for Advantage Card, Parenting Club, Over 60s or Student members. Use the standard 35-day rule for eligible unwanted goods rather than assuming loyalty status adds time. Points earned on a refunded product are removed from the Advantage Card account.
Can someone else return a supplier-dispatched gift?
Boots’ supplier guidance allows gifts bought by someone else to be returned within 35 days of receiving the order. Follow the supplied paperwork and send the item to the original supplier. The refund goes to the original payment method, so the recipient should not expect cash or store credit.
Can I return Boots Kitchen Appliances to a Boots store?
Boots Kitchen Appliances is a partner shop with its own policy. Check the order confirmation or receipt for that shop’s return instructions and contact route before travelling. The core Boots store-return policy does not establish store acceptance for partner purchases, or confirm their return charges and refund arrangements.
Will Boots refund my delivery charge if I return something?
The Boots return policy does not publish original-delivery treatment for voluntary returns. Qualifying statutory cancellation of a whole online order includes the standard delivery charge, while a premium upgrade need not be refunded. Check which right you are using; that whole-order protection does not establish a delivery refund for every partial return.
