Debenhams Return Policy UK: 21 Days, Return Fees and Refunds
The Debenhams return policy gives UK debenhams.com shoppers 21 days from receipt for eligible unwanted online orders; purchases before 8 May 2026 kept 28 days. Items sold by Debenhams go back through its returns portal, while concession-brand items go back to that brand. A return charge is deducted from your refund, but Debenhams’ pages list different amounts.
Key facts
- Purchases from 8 May 2026 have 21 days from receipt; earlier purchases kept 28 days.

- Eligible store credit adds 20%, expires 90 days after you receive the credit and cannot be switched back to a refund.

How Long Do You Have to Return to Debenhams?
Debenhams gives eligible unwanted purchases 21 days from receipt. Its voluntary policy does not specify calendar versus working days, whether delivery day counts, or the cut-off time, so post a few days early.
Debenhams also does not publish a voluntary split-delivery rule for items arriving separately or several sellers sharing a checkout. Safest approach: count from each seller’s earliest delivery. This window does not limit your faulty-goods rights, which are covered below. For other retailers, see more UK store return guides.
What counts as “within 21 days”?
Debenhams’ pages word this differently. The returns page says return items “to us” within 21 days; its direct-item instructions and the FAQ say send within 21 days, while terms clause 9.3 says notify within 21 days.
Debenhams does not say whether handing the parcel to the carrier on day 21 is enough. Start the return and post it early enough to reach Debenhams within 21 days of receipt, and keep proof of postage until you are refunded. Do not assume that notifying Debenhams gives you extra time to post; the portal instructions for your order are the binding answer.
Orders placed before 8 May 2026
Terms clause 9.3 preserves a 28-day notification period for purchases before 8 May 2026. That is not the current standard window.
Is there a Debenhams Christmas return extension for 2026?
Debenhams’ published returns material does not give a Christmas 2026 extension, qualifying purchase range or deadline. Use the standard 21 days unless Debenhams announces otherwise; do not reuse earlier years’ dates. Deliver+ is a paid add-on, not a seasonal extension; its rules are covered below.
Who Handles Your Return: Debenhams or the Brand?
Debenhams handles items labelled “Sold & Delivered by Debenhams”; concession-brand items go back to their supplying brand. Under the seller terms, direct contracts are with DBZ Marketplace Online Limited and concession contracts are with the relevant brand.
Check each item’s order confirmation: different sellers need separate parcels, even within one checkout. Follow parcel or portal instructions; no universal brand return address is published. Before buying elsewhere, compare the M&S return window and refund route.
Why is an item missing from the returns portal?
Debenhams’ FAQ says a missing item may be supplied by a concession brand with its own invoice and return instructions. A missing portal entry does not mean an item is non-returnable. If its label is missing, contact Debenhams before sending it.
How to Return a Debenhams Order
Follow Debenhams’ online instructions for direct-item returns:
- Check the seller. Read each item’s label and confirmation before packing; avoid combining different sellers.
- Repack securely. For direct items, replacement outer wrapping must be opaque, sealable and waterproof. This does not override sealed-product conditions.
- Open the official form. Enter your order number and email at Track Or Return Your Order or the Returns Portal.
- Choose an offered method. Depending on the order, options include InPost, ASDA, Evri and Royal Mail, with printerless options available. Save the label or instructions and check the charge before confirming; do not assume every carrier is available. Debenhams asks you to use a trackable service.
- Send the correct parcel. Follow the selected method’s instructions, keeping separate orders in separate parcels.
- Keep proof of postage and track it. Keep the carrier’s receipt until you are refunded; a created label alone is not proof of handover. Then watch for Debenhams’ emails confirming it has received the return and issued the refund.
Returning concession-brand items
Concession returns use the brand’s documentation or the portal’s seller-specific instructions. If these are absent, ask Debenhams for directions. Separate parcels are required even with one concession fee.
Using your own courier
Terms clause 9.2 makes shoppers using a non-nominated carrier responsible for loss or damage until the goods are received. Confirm the seller destination before booking.
Online Orders Cannot Go to the Beauty Store
The returns policy directs online purchases through the online route; Beauty store purchases go back to the store. Beauty store receipt requirements and alternatives are not published in the reviewed guidance: ask customer services.
How Much Does a Debenhams Return Cost?
The returns page lists £2.49 (InPost or ASDA) or £2.99 (Evri or Royal Mail), normally per parcel and deducted from your refund. Debenhams’ FAQ says £1.99 and its terms say £4, so check the portal before confirming a label.
What each Debenhams page says
| Page | Charge | Basis | Official source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Returns page | InPost/ASDA £2.49; Evri/Royal Mail £2.99 | Normally per parcel | Carrier schedule |
| FAQ | £1.99 | One-off | Return FAQ |
| Terms, clauses 9.1/9.5 | £4 | Return charge | Terms |
Read the portal charge before confirming a label and choose the cheapest carrier it offers. Apart from the selected-appliance deduction below, Debenhams does not publish a comprehensive bulky or furniture collection tariff. Check your order’s collection availability and quote. Nor does it publish a separate Northern Ireland or international return charge. For comparison, check John Lewis return charges and methods.
Fees on mixed Debenhams and brand orders
The mixed-order subsection says £2.49 per direct-item parcel plus one £2.49 concession fee, regardless of brand count. However, the same page’s general schedule prices by carrier and parcel, while its concession paragraph says “from £2.49” one-off. Check deductions in the portal and seller instructions; the wording does not support a reliable combined fee calculation.
Large appliances: the £50 collection deduction
Selected large appliances have an additional £50 collection deduction per item, on top of return charges. The policy requires unused, uninstalled appliances in original packaging. Confirm model eligibility and booking instructions before arranging collection.
Do Unlimited or Beauty Club members return for free?
Not as a general rule. Terms clause 9.5 preserves free returns until expiry for Premier unlimited delivery bought before 3 June 2024; later subscriptions are chargeable. Whether any old entitlement survives today, including renewal treatment, is unpublished: check your account terms.
No free or longer return benefit is published for Beauty Club Enthusiast, Pro or Icon tiers. Assume standard rules; membership does not remove product-condition requirements.
Condition Rules and Items You Can’t Return
Debenhams requires clothing and footwear to be unworn and unwashed with original labels attached; try shoes indoors. Its policy says returns undergo quality checks and excludes:
- Goods in unsaleable condition.
- Perishables, including listed food, alcohol and flowers.
- Unwrapped software, CDs and DVDs.
- Custom-made or personalised goods.
- Vitamins and supplements with broken seals.
Debenhams’ terms clause 9.4 let it withhold a refund or restrict an account if it suspects misuse, such as a used item or a different item being sent back. If you think a return was rejected by mistake, email customer services. A rejected return does not remove your statutory rights.
Debenhams does not publish a general accessories rule, an opened-electronics standard or a separate sale window, so return everything that came in the box.
Beauty, hygiene and sealed items
Debenhams’ hygiene conditions cover face masks, cosmetics/beauty, pierced jewellery, vitamins/supplements, medicines, toiletries, swimwear and lingerie. Change-of-mind returns are excluded if used, relevant seals are broken/missing, or required original product packaging is absent. The faulty-item exception remains: this is not a blanket beauty ban.
Bedding, camping, furniture and appliances
Bedding, mattresses/toppers, pillows and listed camping gear must be unused in unopened original packaging. Camping categories include tents, shelters, sleeping bags, airbeds, camping pillows and sleeping mats. Furniture must be new, unused, unassembled and in original packaging; large appliances unused, uninstalled and originally packaged. Replacement mailing bags do not override these rules.
Debenhams Refunds: How Long Do They Take?
Debenhams says processing can take up to 14 days, followed by up to five more days for the bank. The policy summary counts from receiving the return, while the direct-item paragraph counts from posting. Plan around receipt, then bank posting; if the receipt or refund email is late, check tracking and then email customer services.
| Stage | Published timing | Trigger or limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Return window | 21 days | From receipt; required action differs |
| Debenhams processing | Up to 14 days | Receipt versus posting wording differs |
| Bank posting | Up to five additional days | After processing; working/calendar unit unspecified |
| Concession processing | Not published | Ask the seller/customer services |
| Store-credit processing | Not published | Do not assume instant credit |
| Deliver+/Seel initiation | Within two days of approval | After receipt and inspection |
| Universal end-to-end duration | Not published | Do not add stages into a guarantee |
Ordinary refunds use the original payment method unless eligible credit was chosen. Debenhams does not say whether it refunds the original delivery charge on a voluntary or partial return, so ask before assuming it will.
If the refund amount looks wrong, Debenhams’ FAQ asks you to contact customer services within 14 days. It does not say when those 14 days start, so raise it as soon as you notice.
Should you take store credit for the 20% uplift?
Debenhams credit may suit another planned purchase, but the credit conditions say it expires 90 days after you receive the credit. Return charges still come off; purchases paid with store credit or gift card receive no uplift. Faulty goods are excluded from this optional route.
The choice is irreversible: the first selection applies to later partial returns from that order. The returns policy allows concession credit, but the FAQ says DBZ brand-partner items refund to original payment and excludes gift-card refunds. Expect original-payment refunds for brand items; check whether the portal offers credit before choosing.
Example: Assume an eligible £50 item paid entirely by debit card. The 20% uplift adds £10, making £60 before the return charge. The final credit depends on the portal’s deduction.
If you are deciding where to spend a refund, compare Next’s return costs and refund options.
Gift cards and gift card purchases
Items paid for by gift card are refunded to that card first; no cash conversion is promised. Cancelling a purchased gift card is a separate process, covered in the FAQ.
Deliver+ Extended Returns: 35 Days or 28?
Deliver+ is paid cover, and Debenhams’ pages disagree on its extension. The returns policy, Deliver+ page and terms 9.7 give 14 extra days, totalling 35; the FAQ and terms clause 20 give seven, totalling 28. Plan for 28 days total and check your cover confirmation.
Use the Seel Resolution Center linked from the Deliver+ page for extended-window claims. Follow Seel’s label instructions and return within seven days of starting the request; dispatch versus receipt is undefined, so act promptly and check the claim instructions. You pay shipping and returning costs unless a separate Return Shipping add-on covers them.
Seel initiates refunds within two days of approval after receipt and inspection, minus returning costs. The returns policy describes purchase directly with Seel, while terms clause 20 puts rights against DBZ Marketplace Online Limited with Seel administering; use the Seel claims route and contact Debenhams if unresolved.
Exchanges and Returns Without an Order Number
Debenhams offers no direct exchanges: return eligible items and reorder. Price protection and free replacement shipping are not published.
The public forms use order number and email; the direct route no longer supplies a paper delivery note. Debenhams does not say how to recover a lost order number, whether it can find an order from your card, ID or bank statement, or how gift-receipt returns work. Email customer services for help. GOV.UK recognises bank statements as possible statutory proof, a separate issue from voluntary portal access.
Faulty, Damaged or Wrong Items
Debenhams directs problems to customer services, rather than the ordinary portal or credit process. Email customerservices@debenhams.com using the contact guidance, with:
- Your name and order number.
- Product name/code, problem description and photo/video.
- Details of the received product for wrong items.
- The relevant part number for furniture.
Wait for advice before returning an incorrect item. Products help requests contact within 30 days of receipt; terms 11.3 may request defect evidence after 14 days. Neither removes statutory rights.
Parcel never arrived? That is a delivery problem, not a return. Debenhams’ terms clause 6.8 ask you to raise a delivery dispute within 28 days of tracking showing the order as fulfilled, or otherwise to contact customer services within 90 days of the last tracking event. If you bought Deliver+, check its claim route on the Deliver+ page too. Your statutory rights are unaffected.
Prepaid fault labels, reversal of deducted charges and fixed resolution times are unpublished: ask customer services to confirm arrangements. This guide cannot confirm order-specific fees, private portal options or Seel’s own coverage wording; see how StoreReturners checks policies.
Your UK Legal Rights vs the Debenhams Policy
Online cancellation: Under the Consumer Contracts Regulations 2013, eligible distance-sale cancellations require notification within 14 days after receipt, then return without undue delay and within 14 days after notifying. Separate deliveries under one contract ordinarily count from the last delivery; regular deliveries have a different first-delivery rule. See regulation 30 and the Regulations, including regulation 35.
For whole-contract cancellation, the cheapest standard outbound delivery cost is refundable. Where collection was not offered, reimbursement is due without undue delay and within 14 days of receiving goods or earlier proof of sending; otherwise the regulation specifies 14 days after cancellation notice. Original payment applies unless expressly agreed otherwise. If you handled the goods more than needed to check them, the trader may deduct for the loss in value, under the statutory reimbursement rules.
Shoppers normally bear direct return costs unless the trader agreed otherwise or failed to disclose them beforehand. GOV.UK lists cancellation exceptions, including personalised/perishable goods, unwrapped software/media and opened sealed hygiene goods. There is no automatic in-store change-of-mind refund right.
Faulty goods: The Consumer Rights Act 2015 generally gives a 30-day short-term right to reject, starting the day after ownership/possession, delivery and required trader installation have all occurred. Your other fault remedies do not end then. The trader bears reasonable rejection-return costs, except returning in person to where possession was taken, and necessary repair/replacement costs. Sale goods retain statutory rights.
Debenhams Return Policy Mistakes That Cost You Money
- Assuming 28 days: current eligible purchases have 21 days from receipt.
- Posting on day 21: Debenhams’ pages word the deadline differently; allow time for the parcel to arrive within 21 days.
- Combining brands: different sellers need separate parcels, even in one checkout.
- Choosing credit for the first item: the choice binds later partial returns and cannot be reversed.
- Booking your own courier without checking risk: responsibility remains with you until receipt.
- Sending wrong goods back immediately: wait for customer-care advice.
FAQ
Can I return Debenhams sale items?
Debenhams does not publish a separate sale, clearance or final-sale return period for its UK main-site policy. Follow the standard eligibility rules and window unless your order gives specific instructions. Sale goods retain the same statutory rights; a discount does not remove faulty-goods protection.
Does Debenhams have a phone number for returns?
No. Debenhams’ contact page says it has no telephone number and lists customerservices@debenhams.com. Include your order number when asking about a return. For faulty, damaged or incorrect goods, supply the product details, description and photo/video requested in its product-help guidance so customer services can assess the problem.
Does Debenhams charge a restocking fee?
Debenhams’ return pages do not list a restocking fee; that does not establish that every return is free of extra charges. The published additional collection deduction is £50 per selected large-appliance item. A comprehensive bulky/furniture collection tariff is unpublished: check your order’s instructions before booking.
What happens to my Beauty Club points if I return something?
Beauty Club credits points 30 days after purchase to allow for returns; points on returned qualifying purchases are not credited. That delay does not give you a 30-day return window. Restoration of points spent on returned orders is not published in the reviewed terms: ask customer services.
Can I cancel a Debenhams gift card I bought?
Yes. Gift-card purchase terms allow the purchaser to cancel within 14 days of delivery by contacting customer services, with reimbursement to the original purchase payment method. Cards bought through a third party follow that seller’s terms. This differs from returning merchandise paid for with a gift card.
How do I return a Subscribe & Save delivery?
Delivered Subscribe & Save products follow the ordinary Debenhams return policy under terms clause 19.2. Check the supplying seller, eligibility and return instructions as for another order. Cancelling the subscription is separate from returning products already delivered; do not assume stopping future orders initiates a merchandise return.
