Barnes and Noble Return Policy: 30 Days, NOOKs, Gifts and Holidays
The Barnes and Noble return policy in the United States gives most items 30 days: from purchase for store buys (receipt required, new and unread) and from delivery for bn.com orders (original condition, seals intact). NOOKs ordered online get 14 days from receipt. Purchases made November 1–December 31, 2026 can be returned through January 31, 2027.
Key facts
- Store purchases require a sales receipt and new, unread/unopened merchandise; no receipt means no return or exchange.
- Eligible bn.com orders can go to a store or by mail; shoppers pay standard return postage, and original shipping isn’t refunded.
- Gift receipts support electronic gift-card credit within 60 days of purchase.
- PayPal or Shop Pay online orders returned in a store receive gift card credit, not a refund to PayPal or Shop Pay.
- Magazines, newspapers, used books, digital content, gift cards and bulk orders are non-returnable.
These rules cover bn.com orders and Barnes & Noble store purchases; Barnes & Noble’s help pages don’t publish separate return rules for items from other sellers. More store guides are in our US return policy guides. The main return policy supplies the standard rules; the separate holiday notice supplies the seasonal extension.

How Long Do You Have to Return Something to Barnes & Noble?
30 days is Barnes & Noble’s ordinary window: from purchase for store buys, and after delivery for bn.com orders—not from ordering or shipment. Pickup orders follow the bn.com policy, but their exact start event isn’t separately defined.
The policy doesn’t specify calendar versus business days, day-zero counting, weekend adjustments or deadline time. Return a few days early. Late returns receive no refund, and Barnes & Noble says the merchandise won’t be sent back.
Is shipping your return by day 30 enough?
Barnes & Noble says returns must be shipped or brought to a store within the applicable timeframe. The policy doesn’t say whether a label, postmark or first carrier scan proves timely shipment, or set a warehouse-arrival deadline. Ship early with tracking and retain the mailing receipt; choose the route before packing.
How to Return to Barnes & Noble: Store or Mail
Barnes & Noble accepts eligible online goods in stores or by mail; store purchases must return to a store, including a different location. Use the official return instructions and Store Locator, checking the NOOK and textbook exceptions below first.
Returning to a Barnes & Noble store
Barnes & Noble’s store route requires proof appropriate to the purchase channel:
- Bring the item in eligible condition; store merchandise must be a product Barnes & Noble carries.
- Bring the store sales receipt for a store purchase. For bn.com, bring a packing slip, Order Confirmation email or Billing Summary email.
- Bring the original payment method. For receipt-supported store purchases, unavailable original payment means electronic gift-card credit.
Check that the document identifies the purchase before leaving; an order number alone isn’t listed proof.
Mailing a bn.com return
Barnes & Noble’s ordinary mail route requires the purchase documentation inside the package and the order number outside:
-
Pack the eligible item with its packing slip or a printed Shipping Confirmation email. Without either document, the return isn’t processed or refunded.
-
Write the order number outside the box and include it in the address:
Barnes & Noble
Returns Department
ORDER #: followed by your order number
1 Barnes and Noble Way
Monroe Township, NJ 08831 -
Buy return postage and keep tracking. A packing slip isn’t a prepaid label; original shipping isn’t refunded.
The public instructions don’t publish a general returns portal, prepaid standard label, QR drop-off, carrier pickup or general RMA requirement. Wrong shipments need the additional information described below; NOOKs need separate authorization. For book-shopping comparisons of postage and refund routes, see our Amazon return policy guide.
Buy Online, Pick Up in Store orders
Barnes & Noble applies its online policy to pickup orders. Bring the Order Confirmation or Billing Summary email for a store return; don’t assume pickup makes the store-sales-receipt rule apply.
Can You Return to Barnes & Noble Without a Receipt?
No for store purchases: Barnes & Noble’s published policy refuses receiptless returns and exchanges. Online purchases have the packing-slip and email alternatives listed above; an order number alone isn’t an authorized substitute.
Receipt lookup by card, phone, email or membership, photo-ID-only returns and lowest-price credit aren’t published options. Missing the original payment method can change a receipt-supported refund into credit; it doesn’t remove the proof requirement. For another receipt-policy comparison, see our Michaels return policy guide.
Returning a gift from Barnes & Noble
Barnes & Noble gives electronic gift-card credit for the purchase price with a store gift receipt within 60 days of purchase. For bn.com gifts, Barnes & Noble also gives a gift card and refers to 60 days from purchase, but doesn’t say whether the 60 days covers sending the return or issuing the card.
The NOOK return-center guidance also allows 60 days with a gift receipt (Barnes & Noble doesn’t say whether from purchase or receipt; confirm with Customer Service). These 60 days describe gift-return eligibility, not gift-card expiry. If you’re close to day 60, ask Customer Service before sending it.
Can You Return an Opened Book, Album or Sealed Item?
Barnes & Noble requires store returns to be new and unread/unopened; online returns must be in original condition, with shrink-wrap or seals unopened. Used books aren’t returnable, so the ordinary policy doesn’t provide a read-and-return option.
For defective opened sealed goods, the policy permits only a same-product exchange, through a store or Customer Service. Opening an album because you changed your mind doesn’t meet that exception. NOOK devices have separate rules, including the holiday provision for unsealed devices.
Returning a NOOK to Barnes & Noble
Barnes & Noble gives undamaged bn.com NOOKs 14 days from receipt, or 60 days with a gift receipt (Barnes & Noble doesn’t say whether from purchase or receipt; confirm with Customer Service). Devices bought elsewhere must go back to that seller.
Where do you mail a NOOK return?
Barnes & Noble requires a valid return authorization, or RMA, from Customer Service before mailing a bn.com NOOK. Use Contact Us, which offers 24-hour B&N Chat and an email request link, then follow the NOOK Return Center instructions.
- Barnes & Noble’s NOOK terms recommend deregistering the device and removing personal content, and say to remove any cover or SD card because they won’t be returned.
The non-warranty address is:
Barnes and Noble Return Center
5 Barnes and Noble Way
Monroe, NJ 08831
Barnes & Noble warns that a NOOK mailed without first getting authorization and sent to the wrong address won’t be refunded or sent back. Get the RMA first and use the address Customer Service gives you. Don’t use the ordinary merchandise address at 1 Barnes and Noble Way. Store-bought NOOKs must return to a store.
Certified Pre-Owned NOOKs
Barnes & Noble’s CPO help requires online Certified Pre-Owned NOOK purchases to return to the warehouse. Stores accept CPO returns only when bought in a store. Otherwise, the new-NOOK return policy applies; the help page also confirms a one-year limited warranty for CPO devices. Check the purchase channel before choosing a location.
Store-bought NOOKs and NOOK accessories
Barnes & Noble doesn’t clearly publish a separate standard window/start for store-bought NOOKs. As a precaution, take the device and receipt to the store within 14 days of purchase and confirm eligibility; that isn’t a verified store deadline.
The main bn.com policy gives general goods 30 days after delivery with seals intact. The NOOK Device Terms give NOOK Store physical goods 14 days from receipt, allowing opened packaging except audiovisual recordings and software; packaging and components must be undamaged and resaleable. Which rule covers bn.com accessories isn’t published. Act within 14 days of receipt with undamaged packaging and intact seals; otherwise confirm with Contact Us. For faulty accessories, see below.
Is a defective NOOK refunded or replaced?
Barnes & Noble directs defective NOOKs to exchange under the applicable warranty through a store or Customer Service; a cash refund isn’t universal. Contact support before mailing a warranty device for its current instructions.
The NOOK Store terms provide a UPS label for fault/error returns within that scope; other postage and insurance are the shopper’s responsibility. This doesn’t establish free damaged-book returns.
Barnes & Noble Holiday Returns 2026
Barnes & Noble’s 2026 holiday notice allows refunds or exchanges through January 31, 2027 for purchases made November 1–December 31, 2026, expressly including sealed or unsealed NOOK devices. NOOK Protect can be added up to 60 days after the purchase date for those purchases; that’s protection enrollment, not a return window.
The main policy doesn’t carry this seasonal text. The notice doesn’t say whether any sellers or channels are excluded, whether proof of purchase is waived, whether a mailed return must ship or arrive by January 31, or how it combines with the 60-day gift window. Keep proof, mail well before January 31 and ask support about overlapping gift deadlines. Don’t assume ordinary exclusions disappear.
Example: Assume a NOOK bought directly from Barnes & Noble on November 15, 2026, has since been opened and has no other eligibility problem. The purchase falls within the stated holiday period, so the published deadline is January 31, 2027. Mailing still requires an RMA and the NOOK address; refund posting takes a separate clock.
When Will You Get Your Barnes & Noble Refund?
Barnes & Noble says online refunds are processed within 24 hours after being requested; card statements can take several business days, depending on the issuer. That doesn’t promise money within 24 hours of mailing or warehouse delivery.
| Clock | Published timing |
|---|---|
| Return eligibility | Normally 30 days; online NOOK 14; gift receipt 60; eligible holiday purchases through January 31, 2027 |
| Retailer processing | Online refund: within 24 hours after request. Warehouse receipt/inspection to refund request: Not published |
| Bank/provider posting | Card issuer: several business days. Separate store-refund posting schedule: Not published |
Standard online refunds cover item price plus applicable tax to the original payment method, subject to gift/payment exceptions. Total mail-return turnaround isn’t published.
Example: Assume an accepted standard mail return of a $20 book, $1.60 tax and $6 delivery, with no other transaction adjustments. The item-and-tax refund is $21.60; the $6 delivery isn’t refunded, and you pay return postage. This isn’t a guaranteed net amount after every possible deduction; a separate fee schedule isn’t published.
Why does a PayPal or Shop Pay order get store credit?
Barnes & Noble’s PayPal help and Shop Pay help specify gift card/in-store credit when those online orders return to a store. Don’t expect cash or a refund back to those services at the register.
Check your payment method before choosing store or mail; standard mailed refunds follow the original-payment rule. The main policy also gives store credit for accepted online textbook store returns, subject to the route conflict below.
Gift card and check refunds
Barnes & Noble says to keep a used gift card or eGift card’s number and PIN to access returned-merchandise funds. You may need them to spend the returned funds on another order.
Refunds use original payment whenever possible, but some refunds arrive as USD checks. Specific domestic triggers and delivery time aren’t published; ask support if a check is issued.
What Barnes & Noble Won’t Take Back
Barnes & Noble’s exclusions cover:
- Magazines, newspapers, used books and shipping fees: no return or exchange.
- Digital content—including eBooks, audiobooks, digital periodicals and Access Codes—and gift cards: no standard return.
- Bulk orders: non-returnable; special circumstances go to the store’s Business Development Manager.
- Orders rejected or undelivered for failing a correctional facility’s requirements: no refund or replacement. Check facility requirements before ordering.
Textbooks and access codes
Barnes & Noble’s main policy allows online textbooks to return to a store for credit. Its access-code help words it differently, requiring warehouse returns in its missing-supplemental-code context.
Don’t assume every textbook qualifies for store acceptance. For missing or used supplemental codes, mail to the warehouse or get a binding answer from Contact Us before visiting. Purchased digital Access Codes remain non-returnable; digital terms contain a narrower remedy.
eBooks, audiobooks and subscriptions
Barnes & Noble directs digital compatibility/quality problems to support without promising a refund. Its Digital Content Terms allow a purchase-price refund when content becomes unavailable after purchase but before download.
Barnes & Noble’s main policy says cancelling a subscription may bring a full or partial refund for an unused or unredeemed portion.
Digital magazine/newspaper subscriptions continue through the paid term without a refund; audiobook subscription fees are non-refundable except where law requires. Print-subscription questions go to the provider. Check your subscription’s own terms; no proration formula is published.
Bulk orders
Barnes & Noble’s main policy excludes orders of 50 or more copies. Its bulk-order help says all bulk sales are non-returnable, and quoted orders can start at 20 items. A negotiated order below 50 isn’t automatically returnable. Ask the store’s Business Development Manager about special circumstances.
Exchanges, Promotions and Damaged or Wrong Items
Barnes & Noble doesn’t publish detailed general exchange logistics, replacement-stock guarantees, exchange fees or price-difference rules. Confirm availability and handling before expecting a direct swap; the following specific exceptions are published.
Does a Buy X, Get Y Free return have to include every item?
Yes for a refund: Barnes & Noble requires all items from an in-store Buy X, Get Y Free promotion back within 30 days. Partial returns are exchange-only; replacements for free items must be equal or lower value than their original cost.
What if your bn.com order arrives damaged or wrong?
Barnes & Noble asks wrong-item returns to include the packing slip or Shipping Confirmation identifying what should have arrived. Its general sale terms allow an unused, not-as-described item back for a purchase-price refund; defective opened sealed goods have the same-product exchange route.
A general damaged-book reporting deadline, photo requirement and prepaid-label guarantee aren’t published. Contact Customer Service before mailing for case-specific instructions.
Barnes & Noble Membership and Premium Fee Refunds
Membership doesn’t change the merchandise rules above (see the FAQ). The Premium Membership fee itself has its own refund conditions.
Can you get a refund on a Premium Membership fee?
Barnes & Noble allows a Premium fee refund if no qualifying Premium discount or benefit was used during the relevant new or renewal term and the request is within 30 days; the refund converts Premium to Rewards. The membership terms count from purchase or automatic-renewal charge; fee help and cancellation help word it differently, counting from the membership term’s start.
Request the fee refund through Customer Service (Contact Us); turning off automatic renewal alone doesn’t refund the fee. As a precaution, request within 30 days of the charge. For renewals charged before the term starts, confirm with membership support; don’t calculate a deadline. Legacy terms separately allow 30 days from purchase/automatic-renewal charge if benefits were unused, or if the renewal term hasn’t started.
Barnes and Noble Return Policy Mistakes to Avoid
The Barnes and Noble return policy requires checking channel, product and payment together. Avoid:
- Starting an online clock at ordering/shipment or a store clock at delivery.
- Mailing a NOOK to the ordinary address or without an RMA.
- Expecting cash for PayPal/Shop Pay store returns.
- Discarding the gift receipt or used gift card’s number/PIN.
- Mailing at the deadline without tracking.
- Treating no listed fee as free postage.
For comparisons of gift and receipt handling, read our Hobby Lobby return policy guide.
Published sources don’t settle day counting, shipment evidence, warehouse processing, store-bought NOOK timing or holiday/gift overlap. Get a binding answer for your order from the store or Customer Service; see how we check retailer pages for our source method.
FAQ
Does Barnes & Noble charge a restocking fee?
Barnes & Noble doesn’t list a restocking fee, fixed return fee or per-item/per-parcel schedule in its published policy. That absence doesn’t establish universally free returns. Standard mailed returns require you to buy postage, and original delivery charges aren’t refunded. Confirm any case-specific charges before shipping.
Do returns affect my B&N Rewards stamps and rewards?
Yes. Barnes & Noble restores rewards allocated to returned goods and recalculates stamps within 24 hours of return processing. In its illustration, $31 earns three stamps; returning $10 leaves $21 and two stamps, so one is deducted. Restored rewards aren’t cash, and this clock isn’t bank posting.
Does Premium Membership give longer returns or free return shipping?
Barnes & Noble doesn’t publish a Premium, Rewards or Legacy extension to merchandise windows or a member-specific return-postage exemption. Membership terms refer returns to the retailer’s policy. For standard online mail returns, you pay postage; outbound shipping benefits don’t establish a return benefit. Fee refunds use separate conditions.
Can I return a NOOK or item I bought from another seller?
Barnes & Noble directs NOOKs bought from another retailer back to that seller, under its policy. Current sources don’t publish a complete marketplace return procedure for other goods. Check the seller and your order terms for eligibility, deadlines, postage and disputes instead of applying this guide’s direct-sale rules.
Does the FTC Cooling-Off Rule let me cancel a Barnes & Noble purchase?
No for ordinary online or bookstore purchases. The FTC’s three-day Cooling-Off Rule excludes purchases entirely online, by mail or phone, and those completed at a seller’s permanent business location. The Barnes and Noble return policy and applicable warranty remedies are separate; the federal rule doesn’t add three days.
