Reformation Return Policy: 30 Days, $8 Fee and Exchanges

The US Reformation return policy allows 30 days for unworn, unwashed items with tags: from delivery online, from purchase in stores. Mailed returns cost $8 per order and must be carrier-scanned within 30 days; store returns, exchanges, Instant Ref Credit and qualifying Friends with Benefits returns are fee-free. Final Sale, lingerie, hosiery and vintage are excluded.

Key facts

  • Online: 30 days from each shipment’s delivery; store and pickup: 30 days from purchase.
  • Mail returns require drop-off and a carrier scan within 30 days; starting isn’t enough. Same-country store returns also qualify.
  • The $8/order fee is deducted from refunds; store returns, exchanges, Instant Ref Credit and active FWB members who keep at least one item from the order are exempt.
  • Refund processing takes 3–4 business days after receipt, then bank posting takes another 5–10 business days.
  • Apothecary, lingerie, hosiery, vintage, digital products, Final Sale, e-gift cards and altered garments are nonreturnable.

This guide covers purchases directly from Reformation in the US, at thereformation.com or Reformation stores. Similarly named websites belong to other businesses. Browse more US return-policy guides for other retailers.

Reformation’s US instructions, store-return help, pickup rules and gift help explain these routes.

How Long Do You Have to Return to Reformation?

30 days is Reformation’s standard window. Online purchases count from delivery; store purchases count from purchase. Afterward, the account no longer offers returns or exchanges. Pre-orders follow the standard policy.

When the 30-day clock starts

Reformation gives each shipment its own delivery-based window. Store and pickup purchases count from purchase; pickup returns must go to a same-country store.

Example: Assume dress A arrives first and boots B four days later. Each has its own 30-day window; neither the order date nor the last delivery starts both clocks.

Reformation doesn’t define calendar versus business days, day zero, time zone, cutoff or weekend/holiday adjustments. Return several days early rather than calculating a precise final date.

What counts as returning on time?

Reformation requires drop-off and a carrier scan within 30 days of delivery, or a store return within that period. Creating a label isn’t enough. The policy recommends keeping the drop-off receipt: proof of handoff, without a guaranteed override for a late scan. No scan-delay grace period is published.

Can you return Reformation items after 30 days?

No, under the standard policy; late returns and exchanges are ineligible. FWB membership publishes no extension. Damaged items have a separate contact route below. For another apparel retailer’s terms, compare the Anthropologie return policy.

Does Reformation extend returns for the 2026 holidays?

Reformation’s policy and help pages showed no 2026 holiday extension as of October 28, 2026. Use the standard 30 days for gifts; check the official policy again from November before relying on extra time.

Does Reformation Charge for Returns?

Yes: $8 per returned order, not per item, for mail returns unless exempt. The policy body and US instructions give that rule; the policy’s summary line words it differently and calls timely returns free. Expect $8 unless exempt; the return confirmation email shows the deduction. The pages don’t list a separate restocking fee.

How to avoid the $8 return fee

Reformation lists four exemptions:

  • Return in a store.
  • Choose Instant Ref Credit.
  • Exchange.
  • Be an active Friends with Benefits member and keep at least one item from that order.

A later return of an exchanged item may be charged; how other waivers apply then isn’t published. Confirm with Customer Love.

Example: Assume an eligible nonmember mail return of $200 merchandise, no other deductions, and tax set aside. Mail gives $200 − $8 = $192; a same-country store return gives $200.

Example: Assume an active FWB member keeps one of three items. The membership waiver applies; returning all three loses that waiver, though another exemption may apply.

For another brand’s postage rules, see the Aritzia return policy.

Shipping costs Reformation won’t refund

Reformation doesn’t refund paid shipping upgrades at checkout, separately from the $8 return fee. Military-base and territory duties/taxes aren’t refunded. Rejected returns may incur shipping charges, with no published amount. Ordinary domestic sales-tax treatment isn’t specified; ask Customer Love about the order’s calculation.

What Condition Do Reformation Returns Need to Be In?

Reformation requires sellable, unworn, unwashed items with tags attached. Reformation’s policy gives deodorant stains, pet hair and odors or fragrance as examples that can lead to rejection. Unsuitable items may be rejected and sent back, reflected in return tracking. No universal accessories or opened-package rule is published; follow the category requirements.

Packaging rules for shoes, bags, jewelry and swimwear

Reformation allows any secure outer mailer, while requiring specific product packaging.

Item What must come back
Shoes Original box without significant damage; pack inside a separate shipping container
Clothing supplied with garment bag Garment bag
Handbag Supplied dust bag
Jewelry Supplied dust bag and/or original packaging
Swimwear Sanitary tags attached

Protecting the shoebox matters even when the shoes are unworn; packaging can’t make an excluded item returnable.

Items Reformation Won’t Take Back

Reformation’s final-sale exclusions apply online and in stores.

Item Rule What you can do instead
Apothecary, lingerie, hosiery, vintage, digital products, marked Final Sale No returns or exchanges Contact Customer Love for arrival damage
E-gift cards Final sale; no physical cards offered Check e-gift card terms before buying
Altered/hemmed garments Nonreturnable once altered Send hemming concerns to love@thereformation.com; hemming rules

A discount alone doesn’t make an item final sale: Reformation’s Final Sale policy excludes the listed categories and items marked Final Sale, with no discount threshold. Check for the Final Sale label before buying; otherwise eligible discounted items follow the standard rules.

Damaged goods follow the separate contact route below. When comparing category exclusions, check the Revolve return policy separately.

How to Return a Reformation Order

Reformation offers four routes below: account mail returns, online-to-store returns, store/pickup returns and military-base/territory returns. For ordinary mailed orders, success depends on the carrier scan within 30 days of delivery.

Mail return through your Ref account

Reformation’s online instructions use the Returns & Exchanges portal.

  1. Sign in or create a Ref account using the order email. Guest buyers must create one; check that the order appears before continuing.
  2. Open Returns & Exchanges and select items. Check the selection against what you’ll pack.
  3. Choose refund, Instant Ref Credit or exchange. Review the credit conditions below before choosing.
  4. Submit and print the prepaid label. Confirm the label is available; submission alone doesn’t meet the deadline.
  5. Pack items and required bags/boxes. Put the shoebox inside an outer mailer.
  6. Drop off with the carrier on the label and get a scan. Keep the receipt and check tracking; act several days early.

Use Reformation’s label: its US instructions say a lost return sent another way won’t be refunded. No universal carrier or alternate drop-off service is published. If the portal fails, contact Customer Love.

Returning an online order to a Reformation store

Reformation accepts eligible online orders at a same-country store without return shipping fees. Bring the order number or ordering email; the confirmation email contains the number. Use the store locator and keep tags attached.

Returning a store or in-store pickup purchase

Reformation’s store rules and pickup help require a same-country store return within 30 days of purchase. Refunds go to original payment; allow 5–10 business days for bank posting.

Returns from military bases and U.S. territories

Reformation provides no prepaid labels for these addresses. Obtain Customer Love’s instructions, then use your own courier at your own cost. Duties and taxes paid aren’t refunded.

Can You Return to Reformation Without a Receipt?

Reformation needs an identifiable order, rather than a paper receipt: the order number or ordering email works. ID-only, card-only and untraceable-purchase concessions aren’t published. Contact Customer Love with the ordering email, name or shipping address if you can’t locate the order.

How do you return a Reformation gift?

Reformation allows gift returns for store credit, in store or online through Customer Love. Staff can look up the order using the giver’s email, full name or shipping address. The original purchaser receives an email, so the return isn’t private from them. Gift returns follow the standard policy, so the 30 days run from the original order’s delivery (online) or purchase (store), not from when you received the gift; Customer Love can locate that date. A gift-specific fee waiver isn’t published.

Bought Reformation from another store or resale site?

Reformation doesn’t specify that its direct policy covers third-party purchases. Return through the seller you bought from; don’t assume Reformation’s portal can process it.

How Do Reformation Exchanges Work?

Reformation permits one exchange for another size or color of the same style on shipped continental-US orders, online or in store. Store purchases exchange in store; automatic exchanges aren’t available outside the continental US.

For an online exchange:

  • Start within 30 days of delivery and send the original back within that original window to avoid a charge.
  • Choose an in-stock replacement at the same price; otherwise return and reorder.
  • Save a valid credit card. A temporary $0.02 authorization may appear and drops after seven days.
  • Initiate it yourself; Customer Love cannot do so for you.

The replacement ships as soon as possible. No restarted return window or in-store price-difference handling is published; ask before relying on either.

Example: Assume an eligible continental-US dress order with the desired color in stock but priced differently. Return and reorder instead of using a direct online exchange.

When Will You Get Your Reformation Refund?

Reformation allows 3–4 business days after receipt to process mailed returns, then another 5–10 business days for bank posting. Ordinary refunds go to original payment, with any applicable $8 deduction shown in the confirmation email.

Clock What happens Official number
Return window Drop-off plus carrier scan 30 days from delivery
Transit Parcel travels to Reformation Not published
Processing After receipt; confirmation follows 3–4 business days
Bank/provider posting After processing 5–10 business days

Example: Assume Reformation and the bank each use their stated ranges. Adding them gives 8–14 business days after receipt, excluding transit; this isn’t a guaranteed arrival date. Store refunds also take 5–10 business days to post.

Order Lookup accepts email/order number; account history also shows return status: started, in transit, received, complete, sent back or canceled. “Complete” means processed, rather than already posted by the bank.

Instant Ref Credit: faster, with conditions

Reformation’s Instant Ref Credit is usable immediately after submission on its US site and in Ref stores; a valid credit card is required. Request unused credit back to original payment within 30 days of issue. Redeemed credit can’t convert; purchases paid with it return for store credit only.

Example: Assume you spend the credit and return that purchase. You receive credit again, rather than card money; the conversion window doesn’t extend the merchandise deadline.

Afterpay refunds

Reformation refunds Afterpay, which refunds you: allow 3–4 business days processing, then 5–10 business days with Afterpay. No cash refunds apply.

Damaged or Faulty Reformation Items

Reformation says to contact Customer Love right away: use the contact page or love@thereformation.com. No numeric reporting deadline, required photos, guaranteed remedy, fee waiver or treatment of post-30-day/final-sale defects is published. Ask when you notice the problem; keep packaging and record the issue in writing.

Are Reformation repairs free?

Reformation’s Repairs page offers complimentary repairs without a membership condition; the Hemming page words it differently, reserving free repairs for FWB members. Nonmembers should ask Customer Love to confirm cost before sending anything.

Repairs need a Ref order number; contact Customer Love or participating stores. Virtual repairs use a supplied label, and material/damage exclusions apply. Repairs are a service, not a return or refund entitlement.

Your options beyond Reformation’s policy

Federal routes are separate from Reformation’s voluntary policy. The FTC Cooling-Off Rule excludes wholly online and permanent-store sales; it adds no universal three-day return right here.

For wrong or defective online goods paid by credit card, FTC guidance says call the issuer promptly and send a letter that reaches the issuer within 60 days after it mailed the first bill showing the error. This doesn’t extend Reformation’s window.

Unresolved complaints can go to your state consumer protection office; the FTC doesn’t resolve individual complaints.

Friends with Benefits: What Membership Changes for Returns

Reformation waives the fee for active FWB members keeping at least one item from the order; it publishes no longer window. Qualification requires $1,000 qualifying retained spend plus more than one order on the same email in a calendar year, excluding returns, promotional offers, taxes and shipping.

Benefits need the linked account and activate about 30 days after qualification; membership ends at year-end subject to requalification. Don’t expect enrollment in time to waive the fee on a current return.

Reformation Return Policy Mistakes to Avoid

Reformation return policy decisions depend on the handoff, refund choice and item condition:

  • Creating a label, then dropping off late: risks ineligibility; obtain the carrier scan within the window.
  • Returning everything as an FWB member: loses the membership waiver; check another exemption or expect $8.
  • Shipping shoes in their shoebox alone: risks packaging rejection; add a separate outer container.
  • Spending Instant Ref Credit, then wanting card money: redeemed credit can’t convert; decide before spending.
  • Hemming before you’re sure, or mailing without Reformation’s label: a hemmed garment can’t be returned, and a lost return sent another way isn’t refunded; decide before altering and use the prepaid label for ordinary mail returns. Military-base and territory shoppers follow the own-courier route above instead.

This guide can’t see order-specific portal deadlines, labels or deductions, and Reformation doesn’t define day counting. See how we check retailer policies; use Customer Love for order-specific questions beyond the published answers below.

FAQ

Can I return Reformation without an account?

Reformation requires guest buyers to create a Ref account using their order email for mail returns. An eligible online order can instead go to a same-country Reformation store, using the order number or ordering email. The online-return instructions explain the account route; the normal condition and deadline rules still apply.

Does Reformation charge a restocking fee?

Reformation’s published pages don’t list a separate standard restocking fee or amount. The published US return shipping fee is $8 per returned order unless an exemption applies. Check the return confirmation email for deductions, and ask Customer Love about any charge you cannot reconcile with the published rules.

What happens if my return doesn’t meet Reformation’s conditions?

Reformation may reject unsuitable items and send them back. Its exchange policy says noncompliant returns may incur shipping charges, without publishing an amount. A “sent back” tracking status therefore needs attention; ask Customer Love about the specific condition issue and charges rather than assuming the refund is processing.

Can Reformation stop accepting my returns?

Reformation’s terms say it monitors excessive returns, can review flagged customers and revoke standard return privileges; no numerical threshold is published. Ask Customer Love about an order-specific restriction rather than assuming a particular return count guarantees continued eligibility or means your account will lose its privileges.

Can I return a Reformation pre-order?

Yes. The Reformation return policy says pre-orders follow its standard return policy, so shipped items have the delivery-based 30-day window and usual condition requirements. A pre-order doesn’t create extra return time: check the shipment’s delivery date, preserve tags and required packaging, and arrange the carrier scan or store handoff within the window.
