PetSmart returns at a glance
A PetSmart return without receipt is therefore discretionary, not automatic. PetSmart also says it can limit any return, with or without a receipt, under its US return policy. For other retailers, see more US store return guides.
Key facts
- Window: most merchandise has 60 days from purchase. Store purchases go back to a store; eligible online orders can go to any store or be mailed.

- Online orders: an order confirmation, order ID or packing slip counts as proof.
- Receipt required at $10 or more: electronics (including collars, fencing and training products), grooming tools, filters and pumps, non-prescription medication and vitamins, ThunderShirts and calming products, and flea and tick products.
- Mail returns: start with a call to 1-888-839-9638; a shipping fee is deducted from the refund.

How Long Do You Have to Return Something to PetSmart?
PetSmart gives 60 days from the date of purchase for eligible merchandise. The clock starts at purchase, not at shipment or delivery.
The action that has to happen inside the 60 days depends on the route. For a store return, bring the item to a PetSmart store within 60 days. For an eligible online order going by mail, PetSmart says the item must be sent within 60 days and that you contact Customer Care first, as described in its mail-return instructions.
PetSmart doesn't say whether the 60 days are calendar or business days, how days are counted, or whether a postmark or carrier scan decides a mailed return. Return a few days early, and ship mail returns well before day 60, keeping the FedEx tracking.
What Happens After 60 Days?
A store purchase older than 60 days needs PetSmart's approval. If PetSmart approves it, the policy says you get a store merchandise card for the item's most recent sale price. That is a case-by-case exception, not a longer window, and the policy describes no late returns for online or mail orders.
Is There a 2026 Holiday Return Extension at PetSmart?
PetSmart had published no 2026 holiday or seasonal return extension on the policy pages checked on October 29, 2026. Promotional end dates on its promotional terms page are sale dates, not return deadlines.
Example: assume an ordinary eligible item bought as a gift on November 20, 2026. The standard 60 days from purchase applies. Because PetSmart doesn't publish how days are counted, this guide computes no exact last day; aim to return it in early January.
PetSmart Returns Without a Receipt: What You Need
PetSmart accepts a return without proof of purchase only at its discretion. Under the in-store purchase rules, the policy requires three things: PetSmart's approval, valid government-issued ID, and valuation at the item's most recent sale price. PetSmart publishes no list of accepted ID types or approval criteria.
Two limits apply on top. PetSmart can limit returns whether or not you have a receipt, and the receipt-required categories below still need a valid receipt at $10 or more, so this route doesn't cover a $10 flea treatment or pump. If you're weighing a no-receipt return at another store, see Walmart's return policy.
Does an Order ID or Packing Slip Count as Proof?
Yes, for PetSmart.com and app orders returned in a store. PetSmart lists an order confirmation, an order ID or a packing slip as acceptable proof. A lost paper receipt on an online order is therefore not a no-proof return, as long as you can show the order email or slip. The item still needs its original packaging and new or sellable condition.
Can PetSmart Look Up Your Receipt With Treats or a Card?
PetSmart doesn't publish a receipt-lookup route by Treats phone number, payment card or bank statement. The Treats Rewards terms let members view their transaction history, but nothing in the return policy says a cashier can use that history as proof or issue an original-payment refund because of it.
Before you go, find the email confirmation or check your Treats account history.
What Refund Do You Get Without Proof of Purchase?
The amount is the item's most recent sale price. The form of the refund (cash, card or merchandise return card) isn't named in PetSmart's no-proof rule. A store merchandise card appears in a separate rule, for store purchases older than 60 days, and the two shouldn't be merged.
PetSmart doesn't publish how it calculates the most recent sale price or how tax, coupons, split payments and partial returns are handled.
Example: assume an unopened toy with an original price of $24 and a most recent sale price of $18, returned with valid government-issued ID. If PetSmart approves it, the valuation is $18. The payout form isn't guaranteed, so ask what you'll receive before you accept the return.
A different no-receipt rule covers prepaid grooming packages (see the live pets section below). It doesn't extend to merchandise.
Which PetSmart Items Need a Receipt at $10 or More?
PetSmart requires a valid receipt to return or exchange items in six groups when they are valued at $10 or more:
- Electronic merchandise, including collars, fencing and training products
- Grooming tools
- Filters and pumps
- Non-prescription pet medication and vitamins
- ThunderShirts and calming products
- Flea and tick products
The threshold is inclusive: exactly $10 is covered. Flea and tick products fall under the rule only at $10 or more, not at every price.
Example: a filter priced at exactly $10 needs a valid receipt. A $9 filter falls below this particular rule, but a no-proof return still needs PetSmart's approval, so being under $10 doesn't make it automatically accepted.
Separately, PetSmart requires a valid receipt for any PetSmart service bought online, with no price threshold. Services bought online can be returned only in a store.
What PetSmart Won't Take Back
PetSmart excludes prescription medication and gift cards from its standard return rules.
- Prescription medication: PetSmart lists prescription products as ineligible for return, and its mail-return page also excludes exchanges. The Pharmacy at PetSmart is fulfilled by Vetsource. If a prescription order has a problem, PetSmart's pharmacy FAQ says to call Customer Service at 1-888-839-9638, though that call doesn't promise a return.
- Gift cards: the gift card terms say gift cards aren't refundable or redeemable for cash unless the law requires, and a received e-gift card can't be returned or canceled. That is separate from returning goods you paid for with a gift card.
Special Orders and Personalized Products
PetSmart's official pages word special orders differently. The Return Policy lists special orders, including personalized, embroidered, embossed and engraved products, as return exceptions. The Returning a product page instead directs special orders to a mail return.
Treat a personalized or engraved item as non-returnable unless Customer Care at 1-888-839-9638 confirms a return and issues a return authorization number. Never ship one without that authorization.
Can You Return Opened Pet Food or Used Items to PetSmart?
PetSmart publishes no opened-food or used-item rule, so acceptance of an opened bag isn't promised. Its wording differs by route. For online orders, PetSmart requires original packaging and new or sellable condition. For store purchases, it says original packaging or new or sellable condition, together with proof of purchase.
PetSmart gives no minimum amount of food remaining, and its right to limit returns still applies. Shoppers who buy pet food and supplies elsewhere can compare with Tractor Supply's return policy.
How to Return to PetSmart
Returning to PetSmart takes one of two routes: a store visit, or a mail return that starts with a phone call. Start with PetSmart's store locator or its Customer Service page.
Before you start
- The item, with its original packaging and parts
- Your receipt, or the order confirmation, order ID or packing slip
- The original payment card
- Valid government-issued ID, if you have no proof of purchase
Return in a PetSmart Store
- Take the eligible item to any PetSmart store within 60 days of purchase. Live pets and grooming packages are the exceptions; see their section below.
- Show your receipt or, for an online order, the order confirmation, order ID or packing slip.
- Bring the original payment card: a credit-card purchase is refunded to that card, and other payments follow the refund table below.
- Without proof, present valid government-issued ID and ask what refund you'll receive before accepting.
PetSmart labels in-store returns of online orders as free. For online orders paid other than by credit card, and for delivery-app purchases, PetSmart issues a merchandise return card for the purchase price minus shipping, delivery fees, gift wrap and other charges. Shipping charges aren't refunded.
Return a PetSmart.com Order by Mail
- Call Customer Care at 1-888-839-9638 before sending anything.
- Get the return authorization number and PetSmart's return label.
- Pack the item in its original packaging.
- Ship it by FedEx and keep the tracking.
- Watch for the processing email.
PetSmart deducts a shipping fee from the refund but doesn't publish the amount or whether it is charged per item, order or parcel. Without a PetSmart label, you pay all shipping. Original shipping charges aren't refunded, and cash-on-delivery packages are returned to the sender. PetSmart documents no self-service returns portal, and exchanges aren't offered by mail.
Pickup, Same-Day and Delivery-App Orders
PetSmart says several order types must go back to a store, not by mail.
| Order type | Return route |
|---|---|
| In-store purchase | Store only |
| Buy online, pickup in store | Store only |
| Same-day delivery | Store only |
| DoorDash, Instacart, Uber, Shipt or Skip order | Store only |
Damage on a delivery-app order is handled by that provider's customer service. PetSmart says delivery-app purchases are refunded on a merchandise return card, minus shipping and delivery fees.
When Will You Get Your PetSmart Refund?
PetSmart refunds run on three separate clocks, and neither official page adds them into one date.
| Stage | What PetSmart says | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Return window | 60 days from purchase; for mail, sent by then | Counting rules unpublished |
| 2. PetSmart processing | Mail: refund issued within 30 days after PetSmart receives the item, less the return fee, then a processing email. In store: not published | The email isn't proof the bank has posted the money |
| 3. Bank or provider posting | 3–5 days (Return Policy) or 3–7 days after the processing email (Returning a product) | Neither page says business days |
The two PetSmart pages word the posting time differently: the Return Policy gives 3–5 days, and Returning a product says to allow 3–7 days. For a mail return, wait the full 7 days after the processing email before chasing it.
Where Does Your PetSmart Refund Go?
The form of PetSmart's refund depends on how you paid and where you bought. For receipted store purchases, PetSmart's refund table gives these results:
| Original payment (store purchase) | Refund |
|---|---|
| Cash | Cash |
| Credit card | Original card |
| Debit card | Cash |
| Gift card | Merchandise return card |
| ApplePay, PayPal, Afterpay or other non-credit payment | Merchandise return card |
| Check | Merchandise return card, or cash after a 10-day wait |
PetSmart doesn't say when the 10-day wait for check purchases starts. If the original card isn't available, merchandise credit may be issued.
For online orders, both pages agree that a credit-card purchase with the original card goes back to that card. For other payment types they differ. The Return Policy's online table lists the original card, the original payment for ApplePay, PayPal or Afterpay, and an e-gift card for gift-card payments. The Returning a product page instead says online orders returned in store and paid other than by credit card get merchandise credit.
If you paid online by debit card, PayPal, ApplePay, Afterpay or gift card and want the money back to that method, ask Customer Care before choosing a store return.
An online e-gift card is emailed to the original order address and can be used in store or online, with no cash-out. Merchandise return cards can't be redeemed for cash, and PetSmart's return pages don't clearly say whether they work online.
Can You Exchange an Item at PetSmart?
Yes, PetSmart supports exchanges in store. Any positive balance goes back to the original tender where applicable, and the receipt-required categories above also need a valid receipt for an exchange. PetSmart doesn't offer exchanges by mail.
What Happens to Your Treats Points When You Return?
A return reverses Treats points and spend credit. PetSmart's Treats Rewards terms and FAQs set these effects:
- Redeemed points: points used on a returned purchase are forfeited and not restored.
- Earned points: points earned, including bonus points, are deducted, and your balance can go negative.
- Tier spend: returns and refunds reduce the annual spend that counts toward Bestie and VIPP tiers.
- Autoship Points Payout: returned recurring-order value reduces progress toward the next payout, including rollover spend. A payout already awarded and claimed stays.
Returning Live Pets and Prepaid Grooming Packages
Live pets and prepaid grooming packages sit outside the ordinary 60-day merchandise rules, and each goes back to the original location.
The 14-Day Vet Assured Pet Guarantee
PetSmart's Vet Assured guarantee, stated on PetSmart's live-fish product pages, such as this betta listing, covers pets bought at PetSmart for 14 days. If a pet is ill or you're dissatisfied, the remedy is a replacement or a refund of the purchase price. Keep the sales receipt, and return the pet to the store where you bought it. PetSmart's return policy pages don't restate the guarantee, so confirm with the store before buying a pet that isn't a fish.
Example: assume a pet bought eight days ago, with its receipt. The purchase sits inside the 14 days, so the guarantee applies at the original store. PetSmart's page states no water-sample or dead-fish proof requirement, and the guarantee is not described for adoption-partner animals or aquatic plants.
Unused Super Savings Package Services
Unused, unexpired Super Savings Package services can be returned at the Grooming Salon where you bought them. With a receipt, the refund is the original payment or store credit. Without a receipt, PetSmart's package FAQ gives store credit at the current price for unused paid services.
Package expiration periods are 12 months for buy 5 get 1, 15 months for buy 9 get 3, and 6 months for the limited-time buy 2 get 1.
Damaged or Defective PetSmart Orders
For damage on a PetSmart.com or app order, contact Customer Care within 30 days of delivery at 1-888-839-9638. This is the one return-related clock that runs from delivery. PetSmart's damaged-item page says to have the order and product numbers from the confirmation email, your email address and your phone number ready.
For an order placed through a delivery provider's app, contact that provider's customer service instead.
PetSmart doesn't publish a separate procedure for faulty store purchases, general warranty periods, whether you get a replacement or a refund, whether return shipping is waived, or how long the remedy takes. For recalled products, see PetSmart's recall page.
Your Rights Beyond PetSmart's Return Policy
PetSmart's 60 days is a store policy, not a legal entitlement. The FTC's Cooling-Off Rule gives no three-day right to cancel for ordinary purchases made online or at a seller's permanent store, so PetSmart's rules decide most return questions.
If PetSmart refuses a return, the FTC advises gathering your purchase records, checking the seller's deadlines, asking for a manager and keeping all correspondence; FTC reports don't resolve individual complaints. For how this guide's evidence is checked, see how StoreReturners checks each policy against official pages.
PetSmart Return Without Receipt: Mistakes to Avoid
These six assumptions cause avoidable PetSmart return problems:
- Assuming a cashier can look up your receipt. PetSmart publishes no lookup by Treats number or card.
- Deleting the order email for an online order. The confirmation, order ID or packing slip is your proof.
- Bringing a $10 or more flea treatment or pump with no receipt. Those categories need a valid receipt.
- Expecting the original price. A no-proof return is valued at the most recent sale price, which may be lower than what you paid.
- Assuming the mail label is free, or mailing a pickup or delivery-app order. The fee is deducted, and those orders are store-only.
- Mailing a personalized item without authorization. Get a return authorization number first.
Questions shoppers ask
Does PetSmart charge a restocking fee?
PetSmart's return pages don't list a restocking fee or an exchange fee. The only charge they state is the shipping fee deducted from mail-return refunds, and PetSmart doesn't publish its amount. Ask Customer Care before sending an item if a fee would change your decision.
Can I return a PetSmart gift without a gift receipt?
PetSmart doesn't publish gift-receipt rules. If the giver bought the gift online, the order ID can serve as proof when it's returned in store. Otherwise the no-proof rule applies: approval, valid government-issued ID, and the most recent sale price, with the refund form unstated.
Do Bestie or VIPP members get longer returns?
PetSmart doesn't publish an extended return window or free mail returns for Member, Bestie or VIPP tiers. Returns do reduce the annual spend that counts toward tiers. Treat the standard 60 days as the limit unless Customer Care or a store manager confirms something different for your order.
Can I return an Autoship delivery?
Yes. PetSmart's Autoship terms say Autoship orders are subject to its Return Policy, so the 60 days from purchase apply. Channel rules still decide the route: take an eligible order to any PetSmart store, or, if it qualifies for mail, call Customer Care first for a return authorization number and PetSmart's label.
