How Long Do You Have to Return Something to Target?
90 days is Target's standard window for most unopened, new-condition goods sold directly by Target. Category and listing exceptions take priority. Target says items must be returned within the window, so starting a request alone should not be treated as meeting it.
Target does not publish whether ordinary windows use calendar or business days, how day one counts, or a cutoff time/time zone. For mailed returns, Target does not specify whether drop-off, postmark, carrier scan or warehouse receipt meets the deadline. Return several days early.
Shoppers choosing between the two biggest general-merchandise chains can compare the Walmart return policy.
When does the clock start on a Target.com order?
Target's standalone policy starts direct and Partner online windows at invoicing: when any part ships, arrives through Shipt or becomes ready for pickup. Some help wording and product return text instead count from delivery or pickup. Use the earlier shipment/ready-for-pickup reading when planning; then check the return-by date Target shows for the item in Purchase history or on the receipt, and ask Guest Services to reconcile any difference.
Target's return text for one product counts in-store purchases from the purchase date; Target does not state that as a rule for every item.
Which Target items have 30- or 14-day windows?
Target's shorter-window rules specify:
- 30 days: electronics and entertainment other than Apple/Beats.
- 14 days: all Apple and Beats products, including phones; also phones bought in store or through Order Pickup. Take contract-phone returns to Target Tech.
- Typically two weeks: Limited Time Offer designer launches; check the listing.

Target Circle Card and Circle 360: the extra 30 days
The Circle Card terms add 30 days beyond an eligible item's standard policy for Card-paid store and Target.com purchases. Free Target Circle membership alone does not supply this payment benefit.
Example: Assume a direct-Target, unopened item with a 90-day policy, eligible Card payment and no exclusion. The derived window is 90 + 30 = 120 days. This calculates a duration, not a final date.
Card exclusions include Target Optical, non-returnable items, contract phones and online SNAP-eligible EBT-plus-Card purchases. The extra days do not extend owned brands.
The Circle 360 terms specify 30 extra days for Target.com/app purchases; the corporate benefits sheet describes broader store/online availability, and help wording groups 360 with Card purchases. For a store purchase without Card payment, plan on the standard window; check the item's date in Purchase history and ask Guest Services if it differs. The 360 exclusions cover Optical, final sale, contract phones and online SNAP-eligible EBT or EBT-plus-Card purchases. Membership must be in good standing; trials may differ.
Does Cat & Jack Have a One-Year Return Policy?
Yes. The Cat & Jack return policy follows Target's owned-brand satisfaction rule: up to one year for exchange or refund with a receipt, including qualifying Wallet history. Cat & Jack appears on Target's brand roster. Target's roster also lists brands such as Threshold, Room Essentials, up&up and All in Motion; the same one-year owned-brand rule and its conditions apply.
The owned-brand FAQ excludes Limited Time Offer designer launches and says Card's extra 30 days do not extend the year. Target does not explicitly clarify Circle 360 stacking with owned brands; do not assume extra days. Target does not publish a wear or outgrown threshold or promise automatic clothing replacements. Denial rights remain, so preserve proof rather than assuming every worn item qualifies.
Can You Return to Target Without a Receipt?
Often, yes: Target can use retrievable proof instead of paper. The receipt FAQ distinguishes these situations:
- Lost paper, proof available: use an account/app return barcode, linked Wallet history, packing slip or relevant shipping confirmation. Guest Services can attempt lookup using Target Circle debit/credit/Mastercard or Visa, Mastercard, American Express or Discover credit cards; success is not guaranteed.
- No proof at all: an approved direct-Target store return may receive a merchandise return card. Acceptance is not guaranteed.
- Target Plus Partner item: proof is required; the no-proof route does not remove that condition.
Is there a limit on Target returns without a receipt?
Target says no-receipt returns may be limited, but publishes no dollar cap, item-count cap, reset date or valuation formula. Older guides still quote dollar caps and a lowest-price lookback rule; neither appears in Target's published policy. Find digital proof first; government ID does not guarantee acceptance or a credit amount.
Merchandise return card vs Target GiftCard
Target's merchandise return card terms describe restrictions separate from gift refunds:
| Merchandise return card | Target GiftCard / eGiftCard |
|---|---|
| Possible approved no-proof return outcome | Gift-receipt store refunds normally get GiftCards; GiftCard-paid purchases get a new eGiftCard |
| Target stores only; not Target.com; cannot buy gift/prepaid cards | Separate refund instrument; merchandise-card restrictions should not be assumed |
| Government ID required to issue; same ID may be required to redeem | No equivalent issuance-ID rule specified in the gift-return instructions |
| Nontransferable; funds do not expire; one card per transaction | Expiry/transfer terms are not established by these gift-return instructions |
For another approach to purchase records, see the Costco return policy.
Opened Items, Exchange-Only Products and Final Sale
Target's default is unopened and new; opened or damaged items may be denied unless an exception or damaged-order procedure applies. The exceptions page separates these cases:
| Category | What Target allows | Where |
|---|---|---|
| Opened music, movies, video games, software | Same-title exchange; gaming platform may differ | Exchange route within category window |
| Opened airbeds | Similar-item exchange only | Exchange route |
| Final sale | Trading cards/accessories, open or defective collectibles, personalized items, digital downloads, open/unsealed breast pumps, specialty/prepaid/Target gift cards, select Partner goods | No standard policy return; open pumps go to manufacturer; gift-card legal exceptions apply |
| Specialty purchases | Use the relevant service area | Target Optical, Warby Parker, Pharmacy, Starbucks or Target Tech |
Can you return opened beauty products to Target?
Yes, for most beauty items. Target accepts most opened beauty products bought in stores or online within 90 days with a receipt, or up to 120 days when paid with a Target Circle Card. Target says "most", so check the listing before opening.
Target stores do not accept international returns. Purchases through third-party delivery services go back to that service for help; Target.com orders delivered by Shipt are different.
Target Plus Partner Items Follow Different Rules
Most unopened, new-condition Target Plus Partner goods get 30 days for a refund, with proof, through Target stores or mail. These are marketplace sellers on Target.com; some listings have modified windows or are final sale. Partner policy applies rather than the direct-Target default.
To check who sold an item, look on the product page for the seller named beside "Sold & shipped by"; the listing's Shipping & Returns section gives that item's return details. Page layouts can vary.
Partner goods cannot be exchanged. Partner gift refunds use a physical/electronic Target GiftCard sent by mail/email. Most qualifying Partner goods get the holiday extension below, excluding seasonal holiday décor. The online start-event distinction above also applies.

How to Return to Target
Target offers store, mail, eligible Drive Up and conditional heavy-item pickup routes. Use start a return, returns help, the store locator or Guest Services.
At a Target store (Guest Services)
- Bring the item and receipt, return barcode or original payment card for attempted lookup.
- Take most Target.com returns to Guest Services too, with proof for Partner items.
- Check the listing's Shipping & Returns: some items, including designated hazardous materials, are store-return-only. Specialty purchases go to their own counters.
Online and by mail (UPS or FedEx)
- Open Purchase history, select the item, then Return or Fix an issue.
- Follow the offered method. When mail-in is required, use the free assigned UPS label or FedEx QR code.
- Pack the original item, packaging and accessories. Combine only items appearing on the same label.
- Take the package to an authorized location for the assigned carrier several days early.
Drive Up returns
- Start an eligible return in the app; availability depends on item/location.
- Bring the physical item barcode from its tag, sticker or packaging; tags need not remain attached.
- Indicate “on the way” and “arrived” in the app, then complete the return within the displayed period.
The Drive Up rules keep requests open seven days, shortened if an item's window expires sooner. Incomplete requests lapse. Without the item barcode, use Guest Services; an account return barcode serves a different purpose.
Large and heavy items
Call 1-800-591-3869 to check carrier-pickup eligibility and schedule; this is typically for items over 150 pounds. Disassemble and box the item, place it at the delivery point and include the packing slip if available. Pickup uses normal carrier hours, typically an eight-hour window; an adult signature is required except for To-the-Door.
Pickup fees are not published. Target says most items, including large goods, can return in store without stocking fees; category exceptions still matter.
Does Target Charge for Return Shipping?
When mail-in is required, Target's return instructions promise a free label. Its returns landing page advertises free returns, while the help fee FAQ says costs depend on method without publishing a flat rate. Use a store where possible or Target's issued label; check the return summary for charges before confirming, and ask Guest Services about any unclear charge.
Original delivery charges may be refunded depending on the reason; reimbursement is not guaranteed when Target was not at fault or declines the return. Call 1-800-591-3869 if shipping was omitted. Refused, not-yet-received orders receive item-price and shipping credit after the goods return.
| Charge | Published rule |
|---|---|
| Opened phone | Up to $35 except where prohibited; tax may apply in select states; carrier termination charges possible |
| Unopened phone | No restocking charge |
| Method-based return shipping | Amount, charging basis and deduction mechanism: Not published |
| Carrier pickup | Fee: Not published |
Target Holiday Return Policy 2026
Target's 2026 holiday notice covers qualifying purchases November 1–December 24, 2026, with the window restarting December 26, 2026.
| Qualifying category | Return by |
|---|---|
| Electronics/entertainment, excluding Apple/Beats | January 24, 2027 |
| Apple, Beats, unlocked/prepaid mobile phones | January 8, 2027 |
| Most Target Plus goods, excluding seasonal holiday décor | January 24, 2027 |
Contract phones are not included in the unlocked/prepaid-phone extension. Everything else keeps its normal Target/Partner rule; there is no blanket January deadline. Purchases before November 1, 2026 fall outside this purchase range.
Example: Assume a non-Apple video game console and Apple AirPods bought November 10, 2026, with no other program benefit or listing exception. Target's stated deadlines are January 24, 2027 for the console and January 8, 2027 for the AirPods. Mail several days early because the controlling mailing event is unpublished.
Do Circle Card or 360 extensions add to the holiday dates?
Target does not publish combined deadlines or a stacking order. Treat the stated January date as the deadline unless Purchase history shows later; do not calculate an extra month yourself.
When Will You Get Your Target Refund?
Target's refund guidance gives mailed returns an average 7–10 business days after Online Return Center receipt for inspection/processing before approval. Card posting follows approval; the average is not a maximum.
| Stage | What happens | Target's published time |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Return window | Complete the eligible return | Item-specific; mail deadline event: Not published |
| 2. Transit and Target processing | Parcel travels; center inspects; store handles returns | Transit/store refund timing: Not published; center averages 7–10 business days after receipt |
| 3. Provider posting | Approved refund reaches payment method | Circle Card: typically up to 2 days; other credit cards: typically up to 5 days after approval; ask issuer |
Third-party prepaid Visa/Mastercard/Amex gift-card refunds usually appear within 7–10 days, varying by merchant. Debit, cash, Target GiftCard and PayPal posting times are not published universally. Target does not say store refunds are always immediate.
Refund destinations normally follow original payment methods, including split payments:
- Cash: cash or Target GiftCard; checks: a merchandise return card if the check has not cleared, or cash for returns made 10 or more days after purchase.
- SNAP EBT: EBT.
- Target GiftCard: new eGiftCard; merchandise-card portion: merchandise return card.
Target may refund before inspection and recharge an ineligible return. Unexpected/ineligible items may be donated or recycled, so match the item to its label before packing.
Why is my Target refund less than the price I paid?
Target's refund FAQ allocates BOGO discounts proportionally across the qualifying goods. Promotional gifts can also reduce refunds by their prorated value; promotional GiftCards are nonrefundable, so the shopper keeps the card and the refund is reduced.
Example: Assume BOGO-free items priced $60 and $30, with no other offers and tax excluded. The $30 discount allocates $20 to the first item and $10 to the second; returning the $60 item refunds $40.
Exchanges, Damaged Orders and Replacements
Target allows most store exchanges within the item's window; otherwise a return and new purchase may be offered. Target tries to honor sale prices, but payment method/coupons can affect the price. Partner goods cannot be exchanged.
For damaged/defective orders, bring a valid receipt in store, follow mail instructions or use Purchase history → Fix an issue. Drive Up, Order Pickup and Same Day Delivery issues can be reported from the day after delivery.
Eligible replacements ship free as even exchanges, depend on stock and include a free label if the original must return. Returning the original in store cancels the replacement and refunds instead. For damaged or defective items delivered by EFW, Target offers a full store refund without stocking fees, or Guest Services can arrange pickup through 1-800-591-3869. Follow recall notices for recalls; remedies may come through the vendor. Target publishes no separate nationwide faulty-item period or uniform warranty; normal policy conditions still apply.
How do you exchange a Target.com order?
Call 1-800-591-3869. If available, Target can return the original purchase and order the desired item at the original price, per its exchange instructions. This assisted return/reorder differs from a damaged-order replacement.
Returning Target Gifts and Registry Items
Target's gift instructions normally give a Target GiftCard for in-store returns with a gift receipt or packing slip. Wait until the day after purchase. Call Guest Services to mail an online gift; Partner gifts require proof.
Baby/wedding registries allow up to one year after the event for most new/unopened goods, including most Partner items, using the registry return barcode in store. Wish lists allow 90 days after purchase; shopping lists give no extension. Target states a minimum-spend condition without publishing the amount; check eligibility before relying on it. Unmarked registry purchases may refund as merchandise cards.
What If Target Refuses Your Return?
Target may deny returns for fraud, suspected fraud or abuse; no-receipt approval is not guaranteed. The FTC's complaint guidance recommends explaining the problem and requested remedy, keeping records, asking a manager and contacting a state consumer protection office if unresolved.
The FTC Cooling-Off Rule excludes ordinary online purchases and purchases at a seller's permanent store; it supplies no federal three-day cancellation right for normal Target purchases.
This guide explains published rules but cannot see the eligibility, fee or return-by date Target shows for your order. Use your account view or Guest Services for those decisions; read how we verify policies for the scope of this source-based guide.
Target Return Policy Mistakes to Avoid
Misreading the return policy Target publishes can mean choosing the wrong deadline or remedy:
- Treating Circle Card as a year: eligible purchases get 30 extra days.
- Using 15 days for Apple/Beats: Target states 14.
- Expecting a Partner exchange: eligible returns are for refunds.
- Returning an original in store after requesting replacement: this cancels the replacement.
- Mailing on the last day: Target does not publish whether drop-off suffices.
- Buying postage independently: use Target's assigned label, not an assumed reimbursement.

Questions shoppers ask
Can you return Target items bought with EBT?
Target says SNAP rules require online EBT purchases to return within 90 days of shipment, Shipt delivery or readiness for pickup. Refunds go to EBT. Card/360 extensions exclude online SNAP-eligible EBT purchases under their respective payment conditions. Use Target's EBT exception, rather than assuming a membership extension applies.
Will Target handle returns bought through delivery-service apps?
No. Target says purchases through Shipt, DoorDash, Instacart or Uber Eats must go to that service for refund help. A Target.com order delivered by a Shipt shopper is different: the order channel matters. Check which service took the order before using Target's returns process.
Do Target returns need the original packaging and tags?
Target's mail instructions require the original item, packaging and accessories. Drive Up requires the physical item barcode from a tag, sticker or packaging, although tags need not remain attached. Target publishes no universal store-return tag/packaging rule; check the item and method-specific instructions before discarding anything.
Can you return a recalled product to Target?
Target tells shoppers to stop using recalled products and follow the specific recall notice. A recall does not automatically mean a store refund: instructions may direct shoppers to the vendor for repair, replacement or refund. Follow the remedy in the notice, as Target's recall FAQ explains.
Can Target take back a refund after I mail a return?
Yes. Target may issue an advance refund, then recharge the card if inspection finds the return ineligible. Unexpected or ineligible goods may be donated or recycled, without guaranteed retrieval or compensation. Match the item and label, and review Target's declined-return rules before sending the package.
