Does Target Price Match Amazon, Walmart or Other Stores?
No. Target's dedicated price-match policy names lower prices “at Target.com, in Target stores or with a Target Circle™ deal,” so outside online retailers and local stores don't qualify. There is no competitor list or mileage-radius test to meet. Older guides and search snippets still describe Amazon and Walmart matching, which the current dedicated policy doesn't offer.
Target's pages word it differently: its Terms & Conditions and Circle promotion terms still mention competitor price matches in offer-combination clauses, but those clauses list no qualifying competitor. Don't buy expecting an outside price to be matched. Ask at checkout or Guest Services before paying, or through Target's online chat or 1-800-591-3869 before ordering, for an answer on your purchase.
If a lower Walmart price changes where you buy, check Walmart's return rules before ordering there.
Which Target prices qualify for a match?
Target.com prices can match an in-store Target purchase, and an in-store price can match a Target.com purchase. A lower shelf price at a different Target store doesn't qualify for an in-store match, according to the Price Match Guarantee.
- Match brand, size, weight, color, quantity and model number exactly.
- Set the app to the Target store you're in.
- Show a current, verifiable price; qualifying automatic Circle deals count.
An identical product alone isn't enough: location, seller and timing also control eligibility.
How Long Do You Have to Get a Target Price Adjustment?
Target allows a qualifying request at purchase or within 14 days after purchase. The lower price must still be listed and valid when Target verifies it; an expired sale or cached search-engine or comparison-site price doesn't count under Target's price-match FAQs.
Target doesn't publish whether those are calendar or business days, whether purchase day counts, or whether an online order's clock starts at ordering, shipment or delivery. Ask as soon as you see the reduction, well before the 14th day, rather than relying on an exact last-day calculation.
Extra return time for Circle Card or Circle 360 members doesn't extend these 14 days; the 2026 holiday guarantee below does change the window for purchases in its period.
Target Holiday Price Match Guarantee 2026
Target's published guarantee covers qualifying store and online purchases made November 1–December 24, 2026, if Target's price drops on or before December 24, 2026. As of October 29, 2026, Target has announced the period but it has not begun; purchases before November 1 receive the standard 14-day protection, not the holiday extension. Purchases after December 24 also fall under the standard rule.
Target Plus purchases have the same holiday dates, subject to same-Partner matching, original receipts and phone requests. Target's holiday help and Target Plus holiday help point back to the main policies; neither adds a separate waiver of proof or exclusions. Normal live-price verification still applies. Target names no blanket Black Friday or doorbuster exclusion, but doesn't promise every holiday promotion qualifies.
Example: Assume you buy an eligible item sold by Target for $120 on November 5, 2026, with purchase proof and no excluded offers, and Target lists it at $90 on December 10, 2026. The drop comes more than 14 days after purchase but inside the holiday period, so request the adjustment while $90 is live. The nominal pretax difference is $30; Target doesn't publish the tax or split-payment recalculation. The same item bought October 29, 2026 would have only standard protection, leaving that December 10 reduction outside it.
Does the holiday guarantee cover price drops after December 24?
Target's pages don't clearly resolve whether a December holiday purchase keeps separate 14-day protection for a drop after December 24, 2026. December 24 is the published price-drop cutoff, not an independently stated claim-submission deadline or time zone.
Ask on or before December 24 while the lower price is live. For later drops, ask Target about your order; don't assume either guaranteed coverage or automatic rejection. Use the request route for your seller and purchase channel.
How to Ask Target for a Price Match
Target provides three routes: in store for store purchases, chat or phone for direct online orders, and phone for Plus orders. Showing a live, verifiable price is essential. Use the detailed policy and Price Match Guarantee instructions to check eligibility before requesting.
- Identify whether Target or a Target Plus Partner sold the item: the Partner name appears as "sold and shipped by" on the product page and in your order history.
- Open the current lower price and compare the product details.
- Gather purchase proof and use the appropriate route below.
In a Target store
Ask at checkout, or take an after-purchase request to your local Target's Guest Services. Target's pricing details also allow store matches and adjustments at any lane.
Show the live Target.com/app price or current digital ad on your phone. Staff verify it, potentially on a Target device. For an after-purchase claim, have the original receipt or packing slip ready; screenshots fail the proof check. Manufacturer coupons may be applied after an in-store match under the coupon rules.
Target doesn't say whether you must bring the item or whether opening a previously new purchase affects eligibility. Bring it if practical, or ask before traveling. Check that the verified price matches the correct model and store.
For a Target.com or Target app order
Use Target's online-order contact page for chat, or call Guest Services at 1-800-591-3869. Have the order number, item information, current lower price and purchase proof ready.
Eligible Drive Up and Order Pickup orders can receive adjustments through the online-order chat or phone route.
Target publishes no self-service app adjustment button. If chat is unavailable, use the phone fallback. Target.com and app prices can't be used for matching in Alaska or Hawaii. Ask the representative to confirm the qualifying lower price; an expired listing can't support the request.
What proof does Target accept?
Target accepts a live eligible price or current digital ad, not a screenshot or photo. After-purchase claims also need original purchase proof under the direct-Target policy or Plus policy.
| Proof | Accepted? | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Live Target.com/app price on your phone | Yes | Staff verify price and location |
| Current Target digital ad | Yes | Offer must remain valid |
| Screenshot or photo | No | Open the live source instead |
| Comparison-site or search-engine price | No | A cached price isn't proof |
| Expired Target sale | No | Prior availability doesn't qualify |
| Original physical/digital receipt or packing slip | Required for direct-Target claims within 14 days | Keep alongside price proof |
| Original receipt for Target Plus | Required | Plus policy doesn't list packing-slip alternatives |
Receipt alternatives used for returns aren't automatically accepted for adjustments. Check seller identity next, because proof of an identical model doesn't erase the Plus restrictions.
Target Plus Partner Items Have Their Own Price Match Rules
A Target Plus item can receive an adjustment within 14 days after purchase to the same Partner's lower price on Target.com or a qualifying automatic Circle deal. The Target Plus policy requires the identical product and same Partner; a different Partner's listing doesn't qualify. Target-sold and Plus-sold items can't be matched against each other. Find the Partner name under "sold and shipped by" on the product page or in your order history, as Target's Partner instructions explain.
Call 1-800-591-3869 with the original receipt and live price. Target publishes the phone route for Plus; don't assume store or chat processing. The Partner sells and ships the goods, while Target processes payment and handles payment adjustments. Holiday dates are the same as above, and the employee-only team member discount doesn't apply to Plus items.

What Target Won't Price Match
Target's direct policy and Plus policy apply the same core exclusions.
| Type | What Target excludes | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Condition | Damaged, used, open-package, refurbished, pre-owned, rent/lease-to-own | Opening your own new purchase isn't separately addressed |
| Sale type | Clearance, closeout, liquidation, non-branded items, total-store/sitewide discounts, minimum-purchase deals, price typos | A lower advertised number alone isn't sufficient |
| Offer structure | Credit-card offers, gift-card financing offers, gift-card offers (Target GiftCard, specialty and prepaid), services, bundles, sales-tax promotions, free items, rebates, mail-in offers | Circle Card's explicit 5% allowance is separate |
| Promotional GiftCard | GiftCard received with purchase or currently offered with product | Paying with a gift card is different from receiving a promotion |
| Categories | Contract mobile devices/plans, optical, warranties, assembly, clinic/pharmacy, pre-orders | Category restrictions apply to both seller policies |
| Marketplace | Different Plus Partner, or Target versus Plus | Seller must match |
| Other stores | Another Target store's in-store price, for an in-store purchase | App must show your current store |
| Alcohol | Subject to state regulations | No state eligibility list is published; ask Target |
| Doorbusters/Black Friday | No named blanket exclusion | Normal exclusions and verification apply |
| Limited-quantity deals | No separate blanket rule published | Target may limit quantities per guest and deny purchases |
| Membership offers | Tap-to-add Circle Bonuses can't combine | Qualifying automatic Circle deals count |
Discount combinations need a separate check, especially when a coupon and a Circle deal look similar.
Can You Combine a Target Price Match With Coupons?
Mostly no. Target coupons, registry completion coupons and tap-to-add Circle Bonuses cannot combine with a match. Manufacturer coupons may apply after an in-store match only, subject to Target's coupon rules.
The Target Circle Card 5% discount can apply to an eligible matched item under the Card program rules. It applies only to the amount paid with the Card after other discounts and promotional GiftCard value, excluding taxes, shipping, delivery, handling and other fees. The benefit excludes previous purchases; these rules aren't a retroactive adjustment formula. A promotional GiftCard can independently prevent the match.
The employee-only team member discount can combine with price matching, except on Plus items.
Target Circle deals vs Circle Bonuses
Target's Circle-deal FAQ distinguishes automatic deals from optional personalized Bonuses. For an eligible automatic deal, identify as a member by signing in, signing up or providing your mobile number at checkout.
| Offer type | How it works | With a price match |
|---|---|---|
| Automatic Circle deal | Membership identification activates eligible price | Qualifying price source |
| Circle Bonus | Optional personalized tap-to-add offer | Cannot combine |
Confirm the offer type before asking how Target will return the difference.
How Does Target Refund the Price Difference?
Target adjusts your payment to the lower qualifying price, according to its pricing details. Its price-match pages don't publish the destination of the money, allocation across split payments, processing time or posting time.
| Stage | What happens | Target's published time |
|---|---|---|
| Request window | Ask for a qualifying adjustment | At purchase or within 14 days afterward; holiday purchases November 1–December 24, 2026 cover drops through December 24 |
| Target processes adjustment | Payment reduced to qualifying price; destination and split allocation not published | Not published |
| Credit posts with bank/card | Check order or statement for credit | Not published |
Target doesn't say whether shipping, delivery or handling charges enter the match, and lists no fee for a price-match request. Confirm charges before relying on an expected total. No numeric adjustment cap is published, but Target reserves quantity limits and purchase-denial discretion.
Check your order or statement; contact Guest Services if the credit isn't visible. A later return raises separate refund and deadline questions.
Price Adjustments and Your Target Return Window
Target price adjustments and returns run on separate clocks: 14 days or holiday protection for the price, and the item's return window for a return. Extra return time from Circle Card or Circle 360 benefits doesn't establish an extended adjustment window; Target publishes no longer price window for Circle members.
Target doesn't explain whether an adjustment resets the return deadline, updates the receipt or changes the calculation of a later return refund. Keep original proof and the adjustment record together, and ask Target to calculate any later refund.
Under Target's return help and coupon rules, return credit excludes promotional discounts/coupons, and promotional gifts or GiftCards can reduce a refund. Return refunds usually go to the original payment method, but that rule isn't stated to cover price adjustments.
Our Target return guide covers the 90-day standard window, shorter electronics and Apple windows, Circle Card's extra 30 days, 2026 holiday return dates and refund timing. Keep those return deadlines separate from the price-match mistakes below.
Target Price Match Policy Mistakes to Avoid
The Target price match policy is easiest to misread when seller, offer type and timing are treated as interchangeable. Avoid these six errors:
- Asking for Amazon or Walmart matching: outside prices don't qualify.
- Showing a screenshot: staff need a live, verifiable price.
- Quoting another Target store's shelf price for an in-store purchase: different-store in-store prices are excluded.
- Adding a Circle Bonus or Target coupon: those offers can't combine with a match.
- Expecting October purchases to get holiday protection: they retain the standard 14 days.
- Waiting until the sale ends: a previously advertised price doesn't qualify once expired.
Target matches its own qualifying prices at purchase or within 14 days afterward, with separate 2026 holiday protection. Keep live price proof and original purchase proof ready. Plus requests require the same Partner and a phone call.
This guide covers Target's published rules as checked on October 29, 2026. Target staff verify each price, and Target's pages leave payout, day counting and coverage for drops after December 24 open; read how we check retailer policies.
Questions shoppers ask
Does Target price match in Alaska and Hawaii?
Target excludes Target.com item-price matching and Target app prices in Alaska and Hawaii. That wording isn't a blanket ban on every kind of in-store adjustment. Ask your local Target about a store-price request before relying on it, and identify the exact price source you want matched.
Does an item have to be in stock for a Target price match?
No. Target's price-match FAQ says stock isn't required, but the lower price must still be listed, valid and verifiable when staff check. Target doesn't issue rain checks for out-of-stock price-match requests. The rule doesn't promise that you can purchase an unavailable item at the lower price.
Can Target price match groceries and produce?
Target can match eligible groceries and produce when brand, size, weight and quantity match. The unit of measure must match too: an each-price can't be compared with a per-pound price. Non-SuperTarget stores cannot match per-pound items. Check the product details and pricing unit before requesting an adjustment.
Is there a limit on how many Target price adjustments you can get?
Target publishes no numeric cap on units, daily requests or repeated adjustments per item. That doesn't mean unlimited matching: Target reserves the right to limit quantities per guest and deny purchases. No separate blanket limited-quantity-promotion rule is published, so ask Guest Services about the particular item and offer.
Does any law require Target to match prices?
The FTC's online-shopping guidance establishes no universal price-match right; it advises checking a seller's matching and price-drop promises. That doesn't resolve every jurisdiction's consumer law. Follow the Target price match policy for an ordinary request, and ask about alcohol separately because its matching depends on state regulations.
