- Amazon refund time includes processing of up to 14 days from drop-off, sometimes longer, then card posting of up to seven business days; gift-card balance takes two to four hours after issuance.

Amazon's returns policy and refund guidance explain the rules; check your return screen for costs.

Who Handles Your Amazon Return: Amazon or the Seller?
Check “sold by” and “dispatched by” for the return route:
- Sold and dispatched by Amazon: use Amazon's workflow.
- Third-party seller, dispatched by Amazon (FBA): use Amazon support.
- Dispatched by a Marketplace seller: use that seller's route.
Amazon's A-to-z Guarantee describes 30-day voluntary-policy protection for Marketplace purchases, subject to eligibility and exclusions. Prime-delivered Marketplace and Global Store orders go to Amazon support. Private sellers may not carry the full consumer–trader legal obligations discussed below.
What if a seller offers no UK return option?
A seller may offer a UK address, prepaid international label or returnless refund. Under the A-to-z rules, an unsuitable return option can be escalated after 48 hours, or an expected refund can be escalated seven days after the seller receives the return. The latest delivery date must be within 90 days; eligibility applies.
How Long Do You Have to Return Something to Amazon UK?
30 days from receipt is Amazon UK's usual voluntary return window, rather than 30 days from ordering. Amazon's policy requires new goods to be unused and undamaged, and used goods to have no additional use or damage. The sale terms require complete goods and intact seals on sealed media or software; refund guidance permits refusal or reduction for diminished value, with exceptions for faulty, incorrect, damaged or misdescribed goods.
Amazon does not define calendar or business days, delivery-day inclusion, or whether day 30 means initiation, drop-off or arrival. Start and drop off early; follow the order's instructions.
Amazon Haul: 15 days to request a return
Amazon Haul's terms replace the general guarantee with a free return requested within 15 days of delivery. Goods must be new, unused and unaltered; send Haul separately from other Amazon orders. No later dispatch or arrival deadline is published; send promptly following instructions.
Does Prime give you longer or free returns?
No general extension or unconditional free-return benefit is specified in the Prime terms. Free Returns depends on the item and conditions, rather than Prime membership; check the order's eligibility.
Is there an Amazon UK Christmas 2026 return extension?
No 2026 extension for amazon.co.uk is published in the verified sources. Use the applicable window and check your order's return-by information. The 2026 notice found applies to Amazon.com; US shoppers can read our Amazon US return policy guide.
How to Return an Amazon Order in the UK
Six steps cover most UK returns; the options on your order's return screen decide the method.
- Check the seller and dispatcher. Follow the correct route above.
- Open Your Orders or the Online Returns Centre. Select the matching item and accurate reason. For an item dispatched by a Marketplace seller, choose Send a returns request; the seller reviews it and supplies the return instructions.
- Read the offered method, cost and refund destination. Check before confirming; prepaid does not mean free.
- Prepare the goods. Remove personal data, unlink and reset devices and pack complete goods. Check fashion packaging, tags and documents; device exceptions appear below.
- Use that return's label or QR code. Never combine different orders. Follow supplied invoice instructions where applicable.
- Drop off or hand over the parcel. Keep any postage receipt and track the return in Your Returns; contact Customer Service if the instructions or tracking are unclear.
Follow Amazon's instructions for your offered method.
Drop-off, Locker, Hub Counter and QR returns
Amazon lists drop-off, small-parcel Locker/Hub Counter, eligible QR/package-free services and collection among possible methods. For the box-free, label-free QR route, choose an offered location in your account, receive a QR code and bring the unpacked item, retaining manufacturer packaging if possible. Availability depends on location, seller, item and reason. Follow the QR route's own instructions.
Heavy, bulky and multibox items
Amazon-shipped collection guidance covers goods over 23 kg, over 175 cm on any side, or multibox orders; the driver brings labels. The seller bulky page uses over 31.5 kg or a side over 175 cm, while A-to-z says 31.5 kg or more. At about 31.5 kg, the pages word the boundary differently: use the collection option shown or ask the seller.
For seller bulky returns requested within 30 days of delivery, collection is due within 15 calendar days of first contact domestically or 22 internationally, unless later agreed. Allow 48 hours if collection is not offered immediately; arrange an adult's presence and disassemble and pack where applicable. Non-fault Amazon home collection may attract £50. If you are still deciding where to buy a large item, compare how Argos handles returns.
Returning a gift
Amazon's gift return route is for items marked as a gift at purchase; it requires your own Amazon account and the gift order number. Recipient refunds become Amazon.co.uk gift-card credit after receipt; sender refunds go to original payment. Returns are confidential; recipients cannot get instant refunds or direct exchanges.
The gift page says non-error costs are deducted except specified fashion, while Free Returns may exempt other eligible products: the pages word it differently. Check the gift's fee in the Returns Centre before confirming. For other gifts, ask the person who ordered it to start the return, or contact Customer Service. Do the same if the order number is missing.
Global Store and international returns
Global Store guidance within the returns policy allows local routes or prepaid UPS UK drop-off. Self-paid postage is automatically refunded up to £20 for Amazon US goods or £15 for Amazon EU goods; keep receipts for higher costs and contact Amazon.
For international self-shipping, use the supplied authorisation, mailing label and customs invoices. Allow up to two weeks after carrier handover for receipt and processing, then five to seven business days for funds.
Are Amazon UK Returns Free?
Only qualifying returns are free; chargeable labels are deducted. Amazon's policy gives these floors; label creation shows the exact cost.
| Situation | What Amazon's pages say |
|---|---|
| Eligible Free Returns item | No minimum purchase; conditions include UK delivery, new/unworn condition, packaging/documents and trackable return |
| Eligible fashion | Domestic delivery and return, eligibility shown at purchase; Amazon pays FBA postage, seller pays seller-fulfilled postage |
| Ineligible Amazon sold/dispatched item | Label deducted: from £1.99 UK or £8.09 international; large/multiple items can cost more |
| Defective, damaged, incorrect or late delivery | Prepaid-label cost not deducted under the stated conditions |
| Non-fault bulky home collection | May incur a £50 deduction |
| The Drop Collection | Return costs apply except defective, damaged or incorrect goods |
| Restocking fee | No universal schedule or per-item/per-parcel fee basis published |
For reimbursable FBA postage, Amazon covers standard postage; retain receipts for reasonable excess costs. Amazon's refund page asks for extra-cost proof after 14 days from return. Under the statutory cancellation route you normally pay return postage yourself, so Amazon's Free Returns can be more generous than the law.
Will Amazon refund the original delivery charge?
Eligible statutory cancellation reimburses original delivery up to the cheapest standard option. For days 15–30, the main returns table says cheapest delivery is refunded, but the sale terms exclude initial delivery costs and Free Returns limits non-error original delivery refunds to requests within 14 days. Amazon's pages word it differently: start within 14 days if seeking delivery reimbursement, and check the refund breakdown before confirming. Do not count on getting the delivery charge back after day 14.
Amazon Refund Time: How Long Do Refunds Take?
Amazon-shipped returns can take up to 14 days from drop-off to process, sometimes longer, followed by payment-provider posting. Check Your Refund Status gives the drop-off trigger; the Refunds page supplies payment-specific estimates.
| Stage | Published timing |
|---|---|
| Return window | Usually 30 days from receipt; Haul: request within 15 days |
| Amazon processing | Up to 14 days from drop-off; longer cases possible; check tracker estimate |
| Seller-dispatched processing | UK clock unconfirmed; A-to-z escalation may apply seven days after seller receipt |
| Card posting after issuance | Up to seven business days |
| Gift-card balance after issuance | Two to four hours |
| Pay by Bank | Minutes after Amazon receives/confirms the return |
| International self-ship | Up to two weeks from carrier handover for receipt/processing; then five to seven business days |
| Seller-dispatched payment posting | Not published reliably for UK |
The status table says bank posting takes “seven days”; the Refunds page and status overview say seven business days. Use the business-day estimate, check Your Returns and ask Customer Service about the order's estimate. No universal maximum or combined deadline is published.
Refunds follow the selected method, where offered. Confirmed pre-dispatch cancellations refund original payment, except for exchange orders (see below).
Instant refunds and returnless refunds
Amazon may offer an instant refund to a credit card or gift-card balance, but the item must still be returned within 30 days. A returnless refund applies only when the Returns Centre specifically says you qualify.
Exchanges and Replacements on Amazon UK
If an exchange order is lost, undeliverable, cancelled or returned, Amazon refunds the original order to your Amazon Gift Card balance.
Amazon's exchange workflow requires goods sold and shipped by Amazon, a non-gift credit/debit-card purchase and no promotion except free shipping. Eligible size/colour categories include apparel, sport, shoes, baby products, jewellery and watches. If no option appears, return and reorder; eligible fashion exchanges refund a lower replacement price.
Return the original by the supplied Return By Date to avoid paying for both; a replacement may ship only after the original is sent. The exchange page excludes Marketplace, including FBA, from Amazon's workflow, while bulky seller guidance allows seller-agreed replacements. The pages word it differently: check offered options or ask the seller.
What Can't You Return to Amazon UK?
Amazon's change-of-mind exclusions are conditional; they do not remove separate faulty-goods rights. They include:
- Hygiene goods unsealed after delivery, and goods inseparably mixed after delivery.
- Opened sealed media or software, personalised goods and rapid perishables.
- Fully performed services or non-tangible digital supply with the required consent and acknowledgement of lost cancellation rights.
- Newspapers and magazines except subscriptions, and alcohol whose value depends on market fluctuations outside the supplier's control.
Gift cards are non-returnable, but Customer Service may refund an unused Amazon.co.uk gift card. Customised goods are outside ordinary returns; damage, defects, material differences or seller configuration errors may qualify for refund or replacement within 30 days of delivery.
Amazon devices and Kindle books
Amazon devices bought directly from Amazon.co.uk have 30 days from receipt in new condition. Amazon asks you to return the device in its original packaging, although an opened box is allowed; if the packaging is missing, ask Customer Service before sending. Kindle and Fire returns need not include manuals or accessories. Erase data and use a traceable return; refunds go to original payment after receipt and processing. The device page reimburses postage only for Amazon error, so check order-specific Free Returns eligibility too.
Accidentally purchased Kindle books have a 14-day request window from purchase through Manage Your Content and Devices; partial reading or abuse may prevent refund, and refunded access ends. Before buying a tablet or e-reader, compare Currys's returns rules.
Fashion, The Drop and Luxury Stores
Fashion returns require new, unworn goods with original packaging, tags and authenticity documents; altered items are rejected. The Drop Collection has 30 days from receipt, return costs except faults, damage or wrong goods, and no direct exchanges. Staples by The Drop is different: returns are free within 30 days of receipt, and eligible size or colour exchanges are offered.
Luxury Stores requires unused, unaltered goods, intact tags and hygiene protections, accessories and original brand packaging/documents, using Amazon's label. Hazardous beauty goods are non-returnable.
Amazon Fresh groceries
Amazon's general policy gives Fresh 30 days from purchase, while damaged-grocery guidance says seven days from delivery for unsatisfactory condition. The pages word it differently: report damaged or unusable groceries within seven days through Your Orders or the Returns Centre, or ask Customer Service. No physical return is required; legal rights remain separate.
Renewed products
Amazon's UK seller policy for Renewed describes a one-year guarantee from receipt for products not working as expected, with support followed by replacement/refund. Exclusions include Amazon devices, theft, accidental damage and software/data loss. This is a seller policy rather than Amazon's full customer terms, and it is not a one-year change-of-mind window; ask Customer Service which terms apply to your order.
Can You Return to Amazon Without a Receipt?
Amazon online returns do not require a separate paper receipt in the published steps: find the order in Your Orders; invoices are available there. Gifts need the order number. ID, bank-card or bank-statement-only lookup routes are not published; contact Customer Service. GOV.UK recognises bank statements or packaging as possible legal proof, which does not promise portal acceptance.
What If Your Amazon Item Is Faulty After 30 Days?
Contact Amazon: its normal Returns Centre cannot create the label after 30 days, but legal rights continue. For damaged/defective goods, use Return or replace items in Your Orders where available; photos may be requested.
Eligible Amazon and Amazon Resale items may offer Warranty Repairs after 30 days. Covered repairs usually take up to 20 business days including delivery; uncovered faults may receive an estimate. Unrepairable qualifying items may be replaced with the same or a similar item, or refunded if no replacement is available. Warranty service and statutory remedies differ.
Amazon's Voluntary Policy vs Your Legal Rights
Amazon's guarantee and legal remedies have different triggers; trader rights apply to the contractual seller.
| Route | Start and deadline | Return cost | Refund deadline |
|---|---|---|---|
| Amazon voluntary policy | Usually 30 days from receipt; milestone unpublished | Eligibility/reason dependent | Published processing estimates, with longer cases possible |
| Consumer Contracts Regulations 2013 cancellation | Notice within 14 days after receipt day; send within 14 days after notice if no collection agreed | Shopper unless trader pays or failed to give required cost information | Within 14 days after return or earlier sending evidence; if trader collects, after notice |
| Consumer Rights Act 2015 faulty goods | Generally 30-day short-term rejection after ownership, delivery and required installation complete | Trader bears reasonable return costs | Within 14 days from agreement that refund is owed |
| Manufacturer warranty | Warranty terms; separate from statutory rights | Applicable cover | Not published |
Regulation 30 sets cancellation notice timing; regulation 35 requires sending without undue delay. Regulation 34 requires original-method repayment unless expressly agreed otherwise, without a refund fee; reasonable shop-style inspection is allowed, but excess handling may justify a value deduction if required information was given.
Example: Assume one non-perishable item from a trader, no exclusion and no collection agreement. Cancellation notice is due within 14 days after receipt day; if notice is given on the final permitted day, send back within 14 days after notice. This is the legal route, not Amazon's 30-day policy.
The faulty-goods rejection clock has exceptions for perishables and pauses during repair waiting periods. Tell the trader you reject the goods and make them available for collection or return as agreed. Repair or replacement must be at the trader's cost within reasonable time, without significant inconvenience, unless impossible/disproportionate. After one failed remedy or unavailable/unreasonably delayed remedy, price reduction or final rejection may apply, with lawful use deductions possible.
GOV.UK explains that for repair/replacement faults appearing within six months, the trader generally must show the fault was absent at sale; afterwards you may need evidence. Do not assume this full package for private Marketplace sellers; A-to-z may still apply.
Exact methods, fees and return-by dates require sign-in; the general deadline milestone and reliable UK seller refund clocks are unpublished. See how StoreReturners checks official policies and more UK store return guides.
Amazon Return Policy Mistakes That Cost UK Shoppers Money
Understanding the return policy in Amazon means avoiding these six mistakes:
- Prime means free: check item eligibility and displayed costs.
- Starting on day 30 is enough: drop off early; the milestone is unpublished.
- Sending the wrong item is fixable later: contact Customer Service at once; Amazon does not store mistakenly returned goods, recovery is not guaranteed and no compensation is paid.
- Instant refund means keep it: return within the required 30 days.
- Replacements cancel the original charge automatically: meet the Return By Date to avoid paying twice.
- Delivery is always refunded: seek reimbursement within 14 days and check the breakdown; later wording conflicts.
Questions shoppers ask
Can I return an opened Amazon item?
Amazon allows voluntary returns of new goods unused and undamaged, or used goods without additional use or damage; opening alone does not answer eligibility. Direct Amazon-device purchases allow an opened box. Excess handling can reduce value, while statutory cancellation permits reasonable shop-style inspection, subject to exclusions such as unsealed hygiene goods.
Does Amazon UK charge a restocking fee?
Amazon does not publish a universal restocking-fee schedule or percentage in the verified sources. Refund reductions for diminished value are separate from prepaid-label deductions. Check the return's displayed cost and refund breakdown; ask Customer Service about any unexplained deduction rather than assuming a standard percentage applies to every return.
How do I check my Amazon refund status?
Open Your Returns or the order in Your Orders and check the refund status and estimated date. Amazon's processing estimate runs from drop-off, with payment posting following issuance. Use the order's tracker and contact Customer Service if the estimate needs clarification; seller-dispatched UK refund clocks are not reliably published.
Can I take an Amazon return to a shop?
There is no general UK shop-counter route for any Amazon purchase. Offered QR drop-off points accept authorised parcels: choose a location in your account, receive the code and bring the unpacked item. Availability depends on location, seller, item and return reason; follow the instructions for your particular return.
Can I return something bought from a private Marketplace seller?
Seller-dispatched purchases follow the seller's route, with eligible A-to-z protection. The full consumer–trader statutory package may not apply to a private individual seller. Check seller status, the offered return option and A-to-z eligibility before applying the Amazon return policy to your particular purchase.
