Which Home Bargains Return Rules Apply to Your Purchase?
Home Bargains uses a store-purchase guarantee for shop purchases and separate online terms for website orders. The clock, proof and exclusions differ by channel.
Home Bargains' Click+Collect help says the service is temporarily removed while rebuilt. To compare another general retailer that takes online orders back in store, see Argos's return rules. For Home Bargains, identify your purchase channel before counting the days.
How Long Do You Have to Return Items to Home Bargains?
Home Bargains gives 28 days from purchase in store, or 28 days after delivery under its online terms. The voluntary policies do not define calendar versus working days, whether the purchase/delivery day counts, or a final-day cut-off: return early.
Store purchases: 28 days from the purchase date
Home Bargains' store guarantee offers an original-price refund or exchange for eligible unused goods returned as sold with the receipt. Product and packaging must be undamaged and resaleable at full price. The goods must be back within the window; notifying support alone is not described as enough.
Online orders: 28 days in the terms, 30 on product pages
Home Bargains' online terms give 28 days after delivery, but product pages word it differently: the toy product banner advertises 30 days and links to those terms. Take eligible goods to a store within 28 days of delivery; for an EVRi or courier return, request authorisation well before day 28 and send the parcel as soon as the label or instructions arrive. If relying on the banner after day 28, ask through the Online Order form before sending anything and keep the reply.
The terms require new, original, unopened condition. They do not say whether posting, carrier scanning or arrival at Home Bargains is what must happen by day 28, so ask support to confirm this when you request authorisation.
Example: Assume an unwanted online toy is unopened, complete, supported by purchase proof and outside excluded categories. Returning it to a store in the first few weeks avoids relying on the longer banner; waiting until day 29 or 30 needs clarification first. Compare Smyths Toys' return rules.
What Does UK Law Add for Online Orders?
For eligible distance purchases, normally give cancellation notice within 14 days after receipt, then send the goods back or hand them over without undue delay and within 14 days after giving notice. For an order delivered separately, the notice clock starts with the last goods. A clear email can serve as notice; no particular form is required under the Consumer Contracts Regulations 2013.
If a trader does not give the required cancellation information, the period extends to 12 months after its normal end; if the information arrives within 12 months of the normal period's first day, 14 days run from receipt. See GOV.UK's distance-selling guidance.
Shop-like inspection is allowed; excessive handling may reduce the refund for lost value. Direct return costs normally fall to you if properly disclosed. Exceptions include personalised, rapidly perishable, qualifying unsealed hygiene goods and unsealed audio/video/software. In-person purchases have no general legal change-of-mind refund right. Home Bargains' help says orders generally cannot be cancelled or changed once placed, but that does not remove statutory cancellation rights or resolve the 28/30 conflict.
Is There a Christmas 2026 Return Extension at Home Bargains?
No Christmas 2026 return extension was found in the official policies reviewed. Eligible dates, extended deadlines and seasonal exclusions are unpublished; Christmas notices concern opening and delivery times. Recheck the store policy and online terms before relying on a festive deadline, and retain purchase proof.
Can You Return to Home Bargains Without a Receipt?
Home Bargains does not guarantee an unwanted store-purchase refund without a receipt. Its no-receipt guidance allows a manager to consider a replacement or goods to the value using a card or bank statement showing the purchase date; no cash refund is promised.
No proof-free route, gift-receipt outcome, ID-based return or card/account lookup is published. Bring your statement and ask about an exchange. Online-to-store proof can instead be a delivery note, confirmation email or invoice. For faulty goods, a receipt is not the only lawful proof: GOV.UK names a bank statement as an alternative.
How to Return an Item to Home Bargains
Home Bargains permits eligible online returns to stores without prior contact; courier routes need authorisation. A postal route for physical-store purchases is not published, so use the store procedure for those purchases.
Taking a store purchase back to any Home Bargains store
- Use the Home Bargains Store Finder to find a branch.
- Check it can sell the product: the different-store rule requires alcohol to go to a licensed branch.
- Bring the goods, packaging and receipt; request a refund or exchange under the store guarantee.
Can You Return an Online Order to a Home Bargains Store?
Yes, eligible online goods can go to any Home Bargains store without notifying support first. Product banners advertise free store returns, subject to exclusions.
- Check the category exclusions below.
- Bring the goods and delivery note, confirmation email or invoice.
- Request the card refund described in the online terms.
Sending an online order back with EVRi
- Follow the online return instructions to the Online Order request form.
- Supply your order ID and request authorisation.
- Wait for approval and the label, supplied subject to availability and product size.
- Post using the supplied instructions; keep dispatch evidence.
Home Bargains says it cannot accept unauthorised returns. No self-service returns portal is published. A returns address, EVRi collection/drop-off choices and printable/QR-label format are not published; obtain instructions from support.
Arrow XL collections for large items
- If Arrow XL delivered the goods, ask support to arrange an Arrow XL collection.
- Obtain the cost, which Home Bargains confirms once the booking is confirmed.
- Follow the collection instructions; no fixed tariff is published.
Using your own courier
- Contact Home Bargains for authorisation before dispatch.
- Pay your courier and insure the parcel, as the terms advise.
- Keep proof of postage: Home Bargains says goods lost or damaged with your courier cannot be refunded.
Does Home Bargains Charge for Returns?
Online returns to stores are advertised free, subject to exclusions; unwanted EVRi returns carry a charge per parcel. The EVRi amount and payment/deduction point are unpublished; ask with authorisation. Arrow XL collections are chargeable; your own courier is at your expense.
No general restocking tariff is published. The terms reserve refusal or fees/expenses for goods returned outside new, unopened condition, without an amount. Statutory inspection and diminished-value rules remain separate. For another home-and-garden retailer's arrangements, compare The Range's return charges and routes.
Will You Get Delivery Postage Back on a Partial Return?
Home Bargains' terms promise a postage-cost refund only for the whole order, not part of it. They do not define whether that means outbound delivery, return postage or both; ask support rather than assuming courier costs are covered.
Separately, a qualifying full-order statutory cancellation includes standard outbound delivery charges, excluding any premium-service supplement.
How Long Do Home Bargains Refunds Take?
Card refunds already issued in store should reach your account within 5–10 working days, according to Home Bargains' refund help. If late, contact your card provider first. That figure does not apply to postal refunds.
| Stage | Published timing |
|---|---|
| Return window | Store: 28 days from purchase; online terms: 28 days after delivery, with conflicting 30-day banners |
| Retailer inspection, approval and refund issue | Not published for postal returns or as a separate store approval period |
| Bank/card posting after issue | 5–10 working days for card refunds issued in store only; online-department posting: Not published |
For qualifying statutory cancellations, reimbursement is due without undue delay and within 14 days after Home Bargains receives the goods or, if earlier, proof of dispatch. If it offers collection, the deadline is generally 14 days after cancellation notice. A valid fault-rejection refund is due without undue delay and within 14 days of agreeing entitlement. These are reimbursement deadlines, not bank-posting estimates.
Where Home Bargains sends your refund
Home Bargains' store guarantee refunds the original purchase price; online-to-store returns specify a card refund. Voluntary rules for cash, gift cards, split payments, wallets and postal-refund destinations are unpublished: ask about your payment type. Statutory cancellation and rejection refunds use the same payment method unless expressly agreed otherwise, without a refund fee.
Exchanges at Home Bargains
Eligible store purchases can be exchanged with a receipt under the guarantee. Without one, statement-supported replacements or goods to the value remain discretionary.
Home Bargains publishes no direct online change-of-mind exchange, postal exchange or required refund-and-reorder process. For a different item, request a refund and make a separate purchase; check availability. Exchange-price rules, stock guarantees and exchange fees are not published.
Items Home Bargains Won't Take Back
Home Bargains lists different change-of-mind exclusions by channel. Its online terms exclude, unless faulty:
- DVDs, electronics, underwear and perfumes with opened seals or packaging.
- Perishables, naming food, confectionery and drinks.
- Made-to-order goods, such as personalised items.
The store policy gives these examples:
- Underwear and unsealed perfume or aftershave.
- Goods management considers difficult to resell.
- Goods whose usable life has shortened significantly since purchase.
The 30-day/free-store banner also appears on a chocolate tin; it does not override the confectionery exclusion. These are retailer conditions, with an illustrative store list rather than a complete category inventory. Faulty goods and statutory cancellation rights are separate.
Can Reduced or Short-Dated Items Be Refused Within 28 Days?
Yes, Home Bargains can apply its store-policy exception when the time since purchase has significantly shortened usable life, including reduced short-shelf-life goods. Price reduction or days elapsed alone cannot establish eligibility. No blanket clearance/final-sale ban is published. Sale goods keep statutory fault rights; ask before relying on the full voluntary window.
Opened electronics, perfume and food bought online
Home Bargains excludes opened electronics from voluntary returns, but opening an ordinary electronic item's box is not itself a blanket statutory cancellation exception. The legal exceptions cover qualifying unsealed hygiene goods, unsealed audio/video/software and rapidly perishable goods; shelf-stable food is not automatically rapidly perishable. Explain whether you are claiming cancellation rights or reporting a fault.
Faulty, Damaged or Missing Items from Home Bargains
Home Bargains' store policy offers a refund, exchange or repair as appropriate, with receipt or proof and return within a reasonable time. Its one-year warranty example for electrical and most hardware goods does not limit statutory rights.
For damaged, faulty or incorrect home deliveries, contact the Online Order support form as soon as possible. No numeric reporting deadline is stated. Faulty online goods can go to a store with order paperwork for inspection, then refund or replacement if possible.
Home Bargains covers authorised EVRi returns and Arrow XL collections if the fault is confirmed; EVRi labels depend on product size. Own-courier instructions require authorisation, paid dispatch and insurance. Reimbursement for a partial-order faulty return is unclear, so agree arrangements using the statutory reasonable-cost rule below.
Missing parts and missing parcels
Home Bargains says it holds no spare parts: its missing-part instructions direct store shoppers to return the whole item and receipt for exchange or refund.
For a missing online item, check every parcel and packaging: deliveries may be split. If still missing, the online terms say to contact support within seven working days. That is Home Bargains' reporting instruction, without establishing a legal-rights expiry.
Your Consumer Rights Act 2015 rights
The Consumer Rights Act 2015 requires satisfactory quality, fitness for purpose and accurate description. The short-term rejection right normally lasts 30 days from the day after delivery/possession and any required installation are complete; rapidly perishable goods can have a shorter period. To use it, tell Home Bargains clearly that you reject the faulty goods and want a refund before the period ends, then arrange collection or return.
Repair or replacement normally comes next, then price reduction or final rejection if the remedy fails or causes unreasonable delay/significant inconvenience. A fault arising within six months is generally presumed present at delivery unless rebutted; that is no six-month money-back guarantee.
For valid rejection, the trader pays reasonable return costs, except your own trip to where you received the goods. Repair/replacement covers necessary costs including postage. Sale items retain these rights and a receipt is not the only proof. If support refuses a return you think is valid or does not resolve a refund, make a written complaint through Home Bargains' complaints procedure, including your order number and evidence, and ask for it to be escalated if the first reply does not settle it.
Home Bargains Return Policy Mistakes That Cost You Money
- Relying on a 30-day banner after day 28 without asking support first.
- Posting an EVRi or own-courier parcel without authorisation.
- Expecting cash back with only a bank statement.
- Leaving reduced short-dated goods until late in the window.
- Returning one order item and expecting postage reimbursement.
- Applying the in-store 5–10 working days to a postal refund.
- Sending an uninsured parcel with your own courier.

Questions shoppers ask
Does Home Bargains charge a restocking fee?
Home Bargains publishes no general restocking tariff. Its online terms reserve condition-based fees without stating an amount. For qualifying statutory cancellations, shop-like inspection is allowed; any deduction for excessive handling concerns lost value. Ask support to explain any proposed charge.
Does a damaged outer box mean the item counts as damaged?
Home Bargains says minor damage to an outer box alone is not product damage. If the contents arrived damaged, faulty or incorrect, contact online support as soon as possible. Describe the condition of the goods separately from the packaging so support can assess the issue.
Is there a Home Bargains loyalty scheme that extends returns?
No membership-based return extension or return-fee benefit is published in the reviewed Home Bargains policies. That does not establish whether a loyalty scheme exists for other purposes. Use the published purchase-channel rules and ask support before relying on a benefit that changes your deadline or cost.
Can I still order Click+Collect at Home Bargains?
Home Bargains' help says Click+Collect is temporarily removed while the service is rebuilt. No restart date is published. The online terms still mention Collect From Store contracts, but that wording does not establish that new collection orders are available. Check current help before planning a collection purchase.
What should I do about a Home Bargains Flowers order?
Home Bargains' legacy Flowers help article links to an enquiry page that now opens a shopping category instead of a form. Use the general support request form and provide your order details. A current flowers-specific return process is not published, so ask support which arrangements apply to your order.
