Apple Return Policy UK: 14 Days, Refunds and Exclusions

The Apple return policy gives UK shoppers 14 days from receiving a product bought from Apple online, by app, phone or in store, returned in original condition with the receipt. For online orders, start the return in Order Status within 14 days of the last item's delivery or pickup-point collection, then hand it over within five days of arranging it.

How Long Do You Have to Return to Apple in the UK?

14 days from receipt is Apple's standard UK period. The retail policy says 14 days after receiving the product; the hardware step guide specifies 14 calendar days from delivery, or collection from a pickup point.

What starts the 14-day clock?

Apple's online terms count possession by you or your nominated recipient. For multiple products in one order, possession of the last product controls; pickup-point orders count from collection.

Example: Assume two eligible products in one online order arrive on different days. The notification period runs from the second delivery. Apple's voluntary rules do not publish precise inclusive counting, a time-of-day cutoff or a universal dispatch-versus-arrival test, so start a few days early rather than calculating a last-minute deadline.

Notice, further 14 days and the five-day carrier limit

Apple's returns help says return hardware within 14 calendar days of delivery; its online terms instead describe notifying Apple within 14 days of possession, followed by a further 14 days to return products or arrange collection. The pages word it differently. Safest action: start in Order Status within 14 days of the last item's delivery or pickup-point collection, then drop off or have UPS collect within five days of arranging. Follow the binding dates in your order's return instructions and ask Customer Service if they clash; do not assume a 28-day entitlement or a warehouse-arrival test.

Separately, the Consumer Contracts (Information, Cancellation and Additional Charges) Regulations 2013 normally give eligible distance purchases 14 days after receipt to cancel, then another 14 days to send goods back. GOV.UK explains the distinction: in-store change of mind has no automatic legal refund right, so Apple's store policy is voluntary.

Is there an Apple Christmas 2026 return extension?

Apple had published no Christmas 2026 return extension in its UK returns pages as of 29 October 2026, so there are no eligible dates, deadline or exclusions to report. Treat gifts as subject to the standard 14 days unless Apple publishes otherwise, keep the gift receipt and avoid relying on earlier seasons' deadlines.

What Condition Must an Apple Return Be In?

Apple requires original condition, the receipt, original packaging, parts and included accessories. Under the retail policy, Apple may refuse a return or exchange if the person returning a device cannot disable activated loss/theft protection security features.

Before handing over an iPhone or iPad, back it up, sign out and remove personal data using Apple's guide to preparing an iPhone or iPad. Apple gives that advice for selling, gifting or trading in a device; its returns pages add no reset requirement beyond the conditions above.

Apple publishes no blanket acceptance rule for every opened or lightly used hardware item. Its online terms allow diminished-value deductions for damaged returns, without publishing an amount: ask before sending a product whose condition is uncertain.

For distance cancellation, UK law separately permits handling as you would inspect goods in a shop; handling beyond that can justify a deduction.

How to Return an Apple Online Order

Apple's online route has three steps: start the return, label every box, then drop off or arrange UPS collection. The decisive timing requirement is handover within five days of arranging; Apple does not publish a total completion time or label price.

Step 1: Start the return in Order Status

Open Apple Order Status, or contact Customer Service, with your web order number. Guests can access an order using that number plus the postcode or email address.

For the contact route, provide the collection address and phone number; mark the parcel with the RMA number Apple supplies. Checkpoint: you have the return instructions and any supplied RMA.

Step 2: Print a label for every box

Attach labels. Checkpoint: separately labelled boxes; check costs before assuming free labels.

Step 3: Drop off or hand to UPS within five days

Take the parcel to the chosen pickup point or book UPS collection as directed. Checkpoint: the carrier has the goods within five days of arranging the return; retain handover proof. A booking alone is not enough; UPS must actually collect the parcel. When booking UPS, Apple's step guide lets you choose a collection date and a four-hour window; pick one inside the five days. Apple does not say whether these are calendar or working days, so act early.

Returning to an Apple Store

Apple Store purchases go to a store in the purchase country; ten or more identical products must go to the original store. Exchanges depend on local stock. Damaged or incorrect online goods can also go to a same-country store, subject to category exceptions below. Use the UK store locator; confirm special-item handling and costs first.

Are Apple Returns Free in the UK?

Apple does not publish a universal free-return promise. Apple Certified Refurbished products list free shipping and returns. For ordinary returns, the UK pages offer labels but leave label and collection prices and fee basis unpublished; they also do not list a restocking fee. Ask Customer Service for any charge before arranging carriage.

Charge What Apple says Amount
Ordinary return label / collection Offered; no free-return guarantee stated Not published
Apple Certified Refurbished Free shipping and returns listed £0 for that category
Restocking No general fee listed Not published
Return transportation after attempted cancellation May apply once preparing for dispatch or in transit Not published
Original standard delivery Refunded under online terms Original eligible charge
Express delivery chosen over standard Express-delivery costs excluded when standard was available Premium above standard; standard amount still due on legal cancellation
Requested services begun during cancellation period Proportional charge can apply Not published

For an eligible distance cancellation, the 2013 Regulations let a trader keep only the extra cost above its cheapest standard delivery.

The transportation warning comes from Apple's delivery help. Its online terms address delivery refunds and services; allocation of express-delivery refunds on partial returns is unpublished, so request an order-specific breakdown.

For statutory distance cancellation, direct return carriage can fall to the consumer unless the trader agrees to pay or fails required cost disclosure. That legal allocation does not establish Apple's label price.

Apple Refund Times: The Three Clocks

Apple publishes several refund periods with different triggers, rather than one guaranteed arrival date. Returns help gives five business days to the issuing bank; payment help allows up to seven working days after processing. Track the return in Order Status.

1 · Window14 days from receipt

2 · Apple UK processesWithin five business days of receipt
3 · BankUp to seven working days

Clock Published period and trigger
1. Return window Hardware: 14 calendar days from delivery or pickup-point collection (last item in a split order); arranged parcels handed over within five days. Online notice/further-return wording differs, as explained above.
2. Apple processing Card refund initiated on receipt, sent to issuing bank within five business days of receipt. Retail: approved refund/exchange within 10 business days; inspection duration and exact separate clock anchor unpublished. Apple Store Pickup: separate terms (see below).
3. Bank/provider posting Up to seven working days after Apple processes the refund (payment help). PayPal, Apple Pay and finance-provider posting times: Not published.

Apple's returns help also gives an overall estimate of 5–7 days (day type not stated) from the warehouse receiving your return to the money reaching your account; it spans Apple's processing and bank posting, so do not add it to the other figures.

Under the Consumer Contracts Regulations 2013, where the trader has offered to collect the goods, the cancellation refund is due within 14 days of the day the trader is told of the cancellation; otherwise within 14 days of receiving the goods back or of evidence they were sent, whichever is earlier. Apple's published contract timings do not reduce these rights; bank posting is separate.

Where does an Apple refund go?

Apple routes refunds by payment component, according to its refund help and retail policy:

  • Card payments go to the issuing bank.
  • Online Apple Gift Card payments become an emailed Apple Gift Card.
  • Apple Account portions return to that balance, or an emailed gift card if the balance is at or near its maximum.
  • Cash or cash-equivalent returns over £789 use wire transfer; Apple does not publish how it refunds cash at or below £789.
  • Gift-receipt returns produce an Apple Gift Card; email delivery timing is unpublished.

Example: Assume an eligible £600 return paid £100 from Apple Account balance and £500 by card, no deductions, and room in the account balance. The refund is £100 to the balance plus £500 through the card route: £600 total, without an inferred posting date.

Apple Store Pickup refunds

Apple Store Pickup terms differ by return destination. Online returns use the original method within 14 days after collection, or receipt/proof of shipment when you deliver to a carrier. Store returns use the original method, with the terms specifying bank transfer within 10 business days of return.

Can You Return to Apple Without a Receipt?

Apple's voluntary policy asks for a receipt, but online customers can reprint invoices through Order Status. Order help supports guest access by order number plus postcode or email. Apple does not publish routine receipt substitution by serial number, ID or card lookup; retrieve the invoice or contact Apple first.

Faulty-goods legal claims are separate: other evidence of purchase from the seller, such as a bank statement, can work.

Returning an Apple gift

Apple refunds eligible gift-receipt returns as an Apple Gift Card under its retail policy. Normal eligibility still applies. Gifting help points back to return terms; gifts have no established longer window.

Apple Exchanges and Custom-Configured Macs

Apple Store exchanges require same-country handling and available local stock. Returns help says personalised items and custom-configured Macs may be ineligible for store exchange; the Pickup terms allow store return/exchange but also say custom-configured returns and replacements cannot be offered. The pages word it differently. Use Order Status for a configured Mac's online return and check with Apple before taking one to a store.

Configured-to-order hardware is expressly included in the online step guide. A postal exchange workflow and exchange fees are unpublished; ask Apple which route applies. Engraved-hardware refund eligibility is also unpublished: ask before ordering engraving if returnability matters.

What Apple Won't Take Back

Apple's online terms and retail policy distinguish these exclusions:

  • Unsealed physical computer software: excluded from online change-of-mind refunds; Pickup-to-retail terms permit same-item exchanges of opened software, memory and other media.
  • Downloads begun with express consent and acknowledgement of lost withdrawal rights; the Software Up-to-Date Programme, iTunes Gift Cards, Apple Store Gift Cards and any Apple Developer products: excluded from voluntary online returns, except defects or nonconformity.
  • Apple Gift Cards: excluded from ordinary retail returns.
  • Products bought from other retailers: return to the seller. Apple publishes no general marketplace-seller return workflow.

ZEISS prescription and reader inserts

Apple accepts ZEISS returns on ZEISS's behalf within 14 days of receipt. The retail policy gives different destinations:

Insert Return route
Prescription Order Listing or phone via Apple's contact page; no Apple Store returns
Reader Same routes, plus Apple Stores

Software, downloads and gift cards

Apple's download exclusion depends on express consent and acknowledgement of lost cancellation rights; fully performed services also have consent conditions. Legacy Apple Store Gift Card terms preserve statutory rights and a refund if redemption terms change.

Returning an iPhone on a Mobile Plan or Upgrade Programme

Returning a cellular device may not cancel mobile service. Apple advises contacting the carrier about the agreement and fees.

Apple's payment help says Barclays monthly payments and the iPhone Upgrade Programme closed to new customers after 29 January 2026. For existing agreements, programme terms say returning the upgraded iPhone ends its new loan but does not recover the traded-in phone. Cancelling financed AppleCare+ loses the upgrade option; the premium refund goes first to the bank against debt, with any excess to the enrolment bank account. If an existing instalment loan ends, the programme terms require you to contact AppleCare to cancel the financed AppleCare+; the lender may also cancel it for you.

Faulty Apple Products and Your UK Rights

Apple directs suspected Apple hardware defects immediately to AppleCare through Apple Support, and non-Apple hardware defects to Apple Store Customer Service. Pickup retail terms request prompt reporting and proof of purchase; a proven fault or misdescription can lead to repair, replacement or full refund.

What if your Apple order arrives damaged or wrong?

Apple allows damaged or incorrect online goods to go to a same-country Apple Store or Customer Service, subject to the ZEISS prescription exception. Report delivery damage to Customer Service so Apple can investigate with the carrier, as its delivery help explains.

What does UK law add after the 14 days?

The Consumer Rights Act 2015 normally gives faulty goods a 30-day short-term rejection right, beginning after delivery, transfer of ownership/possession and required installation are complete. Later remedies normally start with repair or replacement at the trader's necessary expense; failure, impossibility or unreasonable delay can lead to price reduction or final rejection.

For relevant later remedies, a fault arising within six months is presumed present at delivery unless rebutted or incompatible with the goods or fault. That is not a six-month refund guarantee. The trader bears reasonable costs of returning rejected faulty goods, except personal-return costs to the original possession location. A rejection refund is due without undue delay and within 14 days of agreement that you are entitled, by the original method unless agreed otherwise, without refund fees. See the Act, sections 19–24 and GOV.UK guidance; Citizens Advice's explanation applies to England.

Example: Assume a genuine hardware fault appears 20 days after delivery, with ownership transferred and no installation pending. The normal 30-day rejection period can still apply even though Apple's 14-day change-of-mind window has passed.

Apple's contact procedure does not choose your legal remedy, and in-store change of mind has no automatic legal refund right. This guide cannot confirm order-specific deadlines or label prices; check your order instructions and ask Apple about missing details before committing to a return method.

Apple Return Policy Mistakes That Cost UK Shoppers Money

Apple return policy mistakes include:

  • Arranging a return but missing the five-day handover requirement.
  • Assuming the label is free despite unpublished prices and a transportation-charge warning.
  • Choosing express delivery and expecting the premium over standard delivery back.
  • Taking prescription ZEISS inserts to a store.
  • Returning a phone and assuming mobile service ends.
  • Relying on a configured Mac store exchange without checking first.

Questions shoppers ask

Can I return an Apple product bought from another retailer to Apple?

Apple directs purchases from another retailer back to that seller under its policy. Check your receipt to identify the seller before arranging a return. Apple's UK pages publish no general workflow for marketplace or third-party sellers, so that seller's own rules decide the return.

Can I return a UK Apple purchase in another country?

Apple's retail returns and exchanges are restricted to the country of purchase, so a UK purchase cannot use an overseas Apple Store return route. Use a UK store for eligible store returns; ten or more identical products must go to the original store, subject to the relevant product conditions.

Do education or AppleCare purchases get a longer return window?

Apple's education-linked UK terms retain the standard notification and further-return periods. The reviewed pages publish no longer general hardware-return window for AppleCare, loyalty tiers or education pricing. Do not infer an extension from UNiDAYS verification or insurance; check the applicable order instructions and begin within the standard period.

What happens if I return a damaged Apple item?

Apple's online terms allow a diminished-value deduction for damaged returns but do not publish a fixed amount. For distance cancellation, handling beyond shop-style inspection can justify a deduction. Ask Apple about your item's condition before returning; goods that arrived faulty or damaged have separate remedies explained above.

Can Apple refuse a return if the device is still locked?

Apple may refuse a return or exchange when activated loss/theft protection security features cannot be disabled by the person returning the device. Check that requirement before handover and contact Apple if you cannot comply. A receipt alone does not remove this security condition in Apple's UK retail return policy.
