REI Price Match Policy: 14-Day Price Adjustments and Exclusions

The REI price match policy in the US does not cover competitors: REI says, “We do not price match with competitors,” so Amazon or brand-website prices won't qualify. If REI later lowers its own price on the same product, color and size, you can request a price adjustment within 14 days of your original purchase. REI Outlet items are excluded.

Key facts

  • REI does not match competitors' prices online or in stores.
  • REI's own lower price must be for the same product, color and size, with a request within 14 days of the original purchase.
  • Requests go through REI's online price-adjustment form, which asks for your order date and a description of the issue.
  • Direct REI.com and REI-store purchases are covered; Outlet items bearing the REI OUTLET badge are excluded. Third-party purchase rules aren't published.
  • Eligible REI Co-op Mastercard accounts have separate issuer protection: qualifying purchases from January 13, 2026, paid entirely with the covered card and/or its points, have a 120-day qualifying-ad period and $250 claim cap.

“Not published” means the REI adjustment rules available for this guide don't address the case; it doesn't mean eligible or excluded.

Does REI Price Match Competitors?

No. REI's adjustment page states, “We do not price match with competitors.” There is no qualifying competitor list, local radius or competitor-stock test because REI does not offer retailer matching.

The FTC's online-shopping advice tells shoppers to check the seller's matching policy; it does not establish an entitlement to a match.

Does REI Match Amazon, Backcountry or a Brand's Website?

No. Amazon, Backcountry, brand websites and local stores are examples of REI's blanket exclusion, not an official list. Competitor screenshots won't establish eligibility, despite instructions in some older guides. If you're considering buying on Amazon instead, check Amazon's return rules before deciding. REI's alternative concerns its own later price drops.

How REI's 14-Day Price Adjustment Works

REI allows requests when a purchased item later drops in price at REI, subject to its adjustment restrictions. Direct REI.com and retail-store purchases appear on the form. REI's readable adjustment rules don't state stock, unused or resalable condition, tags or packaging requirements; return conditions are separate.

When Does the 14-Day Window Start?

REI counts the window from the original purchase date, not delivery. For online purchases, the form asks when you placed the order and points to purchase history or the confirmation email.

REI doesn't specify calendar versus business days, purchase-day inclusion, cutoff hour, timezone, or how backorders, delayed shipping and pickup affect counting. Request promptly, well before day 14; don't calculate an exact final day from an unstated counting rule.

Do Size and Color Have to Match?

Yes. REI requires the same product, color and size. A jacket's cheaper “from” price doesn't qualify if it applies to another color. For a different size or color, see the exchange guidance below rather than using another variant's price.

Example: A Jacket Price Drop Within 14 Days

Example: Assume a shopper buys a non-Outlet jacket directly from REI.com for $180 on November 2, 2026, and REI lists the identical product, color and size for $144 on November 7, 2026.

A request that day is five days after purchase, with a candidate $36 merchandise-price difference ($180 − $144). REI reviews the request; tax, shipping and payout treatment aren't published, so $36 isn't a promised final credit. If only green drops and the shopper bought black, the color requirement fails.

Will REI Honor Its Own Lower Online or Store Price?

REI publishes no explicit right to have a store match REI.com or app prices, or the reverse. REI's Pricing help says online and store prices don't vary by channel or location. Its Terms of Sale word it differently: website prices may differ from store or store-advertised prices.

Check the price where you're buying before paying. After purchase, submit a lower REI price for the identical product, color and size within 14 days and let REI decide. REI's reply to your request, or REI customer service, gives the binding answer for your order; don't assume a store or REI.com will match the other at checkout. Outlet pricing is separate—check its badge as explained below before submitting.

How to Request an REI Price Adjustment

REI's online form is the request route its adjustment page provides. Set aside a few minutes to gather details; REI publishes no completion-time estimate. Eligibility turns on the original purchase date and identical product, color and size.

Steps on REI's Online Price-Adjustment Form

Start with REI's price-adjustment request form.

  1. Check the lower REI price. Match product, color and size, and exclude Outlet. A competitor price won't work.
  2. Find the order date. Use purchase history or the confirmation email; don't substitute delivery.
  3. Choose the purchase channel and reason. Select where you bought and the lower-price or forgotten-coupon option that describes your issue.
  4. Enter the date and issue description. Both are required in the visible first step; explain the price drop or coupon problem.
  5. Follow the remaining prompts. The second step wasn't accessible for this guide, so its fields aren't verified. Await REI's response rather than treating submission as approval.

What Proof Should You Have Ready?

REI's visible form requires the order date and an issue description; the full proof list couldn't be verified. Receipt or order-number requirements, screenshots versus live links, receipt lookup and bringing the item aren't confirmed.

As a precaution, keep your receipt or order number and note the lower REI price and observation date. These are preparation suggestions, not additional REI requirements.

Phone, Chat and Store Help

REI lists general help through its contact form, 1-800-426-4840 and Live Chat entry. Use the store locator to find a store.

REI's readable adjustment rules don't say whether phone, chat, app or store staff can complete adjustments, or whether store purchases require the same store.

What REI Won't Adjust: Outlet and Other Exclusions

REI explicitly excludes competitors' prices and Outlet, and requires matching variants. Other categories aren't addressed in the readable adjustment rules. The table distinguishes those gaps from the confirmed restrictions.

Price or purchase type REI's rule Status What to do instead
Competitor or marketplace price No matching Confirmed Compare sellers
REI Outlet Excluded Confirmed Consider separate return terms
Different color or size Identity requirement fails Confirmed Check purchased variant
Expired event coupon Invalid outside event dates Confirmed Check original event eligibility
Third-party seller purchase Adjustment rights unstated Not published Ask before assuming coverage
Non-Outlet sale or clearance No separate exclusion stated Not published Ask about that item
Re/Supply, used, open-box, refurbished, damaged Category eligibility unstated Not published Ask about that purchase
Bundles, multipacks, multibuys Special rules unstated Not published Describe the offer
Limited-quantity, flash, liquidation, discontinued Special rules unstated Not published Ask while price is visible
Financing, rebates, free gifts Treatment unstated Not published Describe all offer terms
Member-only prices Adjustment rights unstated Not published Ask about the member offer
Frequency, quantity or dollar caps Adjustment limits unstated Not published Ask about repeat requests

How Can You Tell if an Item Is REI Outlet?

REI's Pricing help identifies Outlet merchandise by the REI OUTLET badge. An older adjustment-page version mentioned prices ending in $0.73; that isn't a complete current identification test.

Outlet's adjustment exclusion doesn't make it universally final sale. REI's general terms allow new-product returns and exchanges, including Outlet, subject to its guarantee and contrary purchase terms. The return-guide section below explains where to check those rules.

Forgotten Coupons and Missed Sale Events

REI's form includes a forgotten-coupon reason, but full eligibility, stacking and treatment of already coupon-discounted orders aren't published. REI's coupon-event Help Center article says codes aren't valid outside event dates, online or in stores.

That doesn't settle corrections to orders placed during an event. Before asking, read the coupon's own terms for purchase dates, prior-purchase use, eligible products and stacking; some REI offers, such as the October bonus card, bar use on earlier purchases, and the form's coupon option doesn't override them. Ask within 14 days and describe the coupon and event dates; the selector doesn't promise approval.

Is There a 2026 REI Holiday Price Guarantee?

As of October 29, 2026, REI hadn't published a 2026 holiday price-match or extended price-adjustment guarantee in the official pages checked, so there is no extended purchase range or deadline to report. Special Black Friday, Cyber Monday and doorbuster rules aren't published. The ordinary 14-day rule remains the published window, and competitor holiday prices don't qualify.

REI's October Gift Card Bonus Card—earned October 9–13 and redeemable October 23–29, 2026, Pacific time—was a member promotion, not protection; its terms prohibit prior-purchase use. Recheck REI's promotions page before holiday shopping.

How REI Refunds the Price Difference

REI's readable adjustment rules don't state an adjustment-specific payment destination, processing time, bank-posting time or email-confirmation practice. Keep the deadline and payment stages separate:

Stage REI's published rule
Request deadline Within 14 days of original purchase
REI review and processing Not published
Bank or card posting Not published
Adjustment destination Not published

REI's general Terms of Sale say REI Sites refunds go to the same card or, at REI's discretion, another payment method. That general online-sale provision isn't an adjustment-specific promise or an in-store refund rule.

Tax, shipping, discounts and split-payment calculations aren't published. Older guides quote turnaround times the accessible official pages don't establish.

Does the REI Co-op Mastercard Add Price Protection?

Yes, for eligible covered accounts: a separate issuer benefit appears in Capital One's REI-specific World Elite Mastercard Guide to Benefits. The guide covers purchases on or after January 13, 2026, replacing earlier guides. REI membership alone doesn't qualify you.

An eligible purchase must be paid entirely with the covered card and/or its accumulated card points. You must see a lower printed or qualifying non-auction internet advertisement for the same manufacturer and model within 120 days of the receipt purchase date. Account eligibility and good-standing requirements apply. Don't assume annual Co-op Member Rewards count as card points. Advertisement and merchant criteria govern, rather than a named competitor list.

Card Claim Caps, Deadlines and Proof

The issuer benefit caps payment at $250 per claim, with at most four claims per eligible account in 12 consecutive months. Tax, shipping, handling and storage aren't included in the price comparison.

Open a claim through the card-benefit claim site or 1-800-Mastercard. Report within 60 days of the incident, not 60 days from purchase, and provide documents within 180 days of the advertisement's publication.

Prepare the dated advertisement, itemized purchase receipts, card statement showing payment and applicable points, and reasonably requested documents. The saved internet ad must show the merchant's site address and customer-service telephone number, retailer, manufacturer/model, price, date and charges; qualifying merchants need a valid tax ID. For benefits help, use Capital One's benefits resource or 1-800-627-8372.

What the Card Benefit Excludes

The card guide excludes:

  • Used, refurbished and other previously owned items.
  • Customized or special orders and auction purchases.
  • Resale or commercial purchases.
  • Limited-quantity, closeout and discontinued offers.
  • Reductions from rebates, bonuses, giveaways, manufacturer coupons or special financing.
  • Items returned to any store.

The guide lists further exclusions. Coverage pays only the difference unmet by retailer refunds, exchanges, credits or other coverage, so use REI's own adjustment first when applicable.

Example: Assume an eligible cardholder buys a tent on October 1, 2026, entirely with the covered card, and a qualifying non-auction internet ad for the identical manufacturer/model appears November 10, 2026, 40 days later, $300 lower, with no exclusion, return, offsetting credit or exhausted claim limit.

The maximum for that claim is $250, the lesser of $300 and the $250 cap. This is issuer protection, not an REI adjustment; payout method and timing aren't stated in the Price Protection section.

Price Adjustments and REI's Return Policy

A price adjustment and a return are separate: adjustments concern REI's own lower price within 14 days of original purchase. REI's general sale terms allow new-product returns and exchanges, including Outlet, in stores or by mail, subject to the guarantee and contrary purchase terms; returns may affect promotions.

Read REI's return policy guide for return windows and member terms, condition and used-gear rules, store and mail instructions, returns without a receipt and refund timing. Returning an item claimed or intended for the card benefit ends that claim because returned items are excluded.

Can You Return and Rebuy at REI's Lower Price?

REI doesn't publish return-and-rebuy as a price-match route. Post-adjustment refund amounts, receipt value and changes to the return clock aren't stated, and returns may affect promotions. Use the 14-day adjustment form when eligible rather than assuming combined recoveries.

What if You Need a Different Size or Color?

A size or color change is an exchange, not an adjustment. If your original order used a coupon or discount, REI's exchange help article says it can help you keep that price when replacing the same item in another size, or in another color that was also on sale under the original offer: by phone or chat for online orders, or with store staff for store purchases. That doesn't permit variant changes within an adjustment.

REI Price Match Policy Mistakes to Avoid

REI shoppers should avoid:

  • Asking for Amazon, Backcountry or local-store matching.
  • Waiting until day 14 despite unpublished counting details.
  • Comparing another color or size.
  • Expecting Outlet adjustments or assuming Outlet can't be returned.
  • Assuming channel prices always match—or never do.
  • Treating the card's 120 days as REI's window, or returning an item during a card claim.
  • Expecting a published adjustment payout deadline.

The second form step, full proof list, payout mechanics, channel routing and post-adjustment returns remain unverified; REI decides requests. Read how StoreReturners checks official policies and records dates for the verification approach, or browse US store policy guides when comparing retailers.

Questions shoppers ask

Do REI members get a longer price adjustment window?

REI publishes no member extension, membership prerequisite or member-only adjustment rule in the accessible adjustment policy. The published window is 14 days from the original purchase date. Ask promptly under that rule rather than assuming membership adds time or guarantees access to a lower member-only offer.

Does a price adjustment change my REI Co-op Member Reward?

REI's membership terms exclude sale, clearance, discounted, Outlet and used-gear purchases from the annual reward base; exact post-adjustment recalculation isn't published. Separately, Capital One's card terms base card rewards on net purchases after credits and returns. Don't apply a universal reward deduction.

Is there a limit on how many REI price adjustments you can get?

REI publishes no numeric adjustment cap, per-item frequency limit or minimum/maximum price difference in the accessible rules. Its general sale terms allow quantity limits or rejection of online orders, but those aren't adjustment caps. Ask REI about repeat requests; don't transfer the card benefit's limits to retailer adjustments.

Does the lower-priced item have to be in stock?

REI's readable adjustment rules don't state an in-stock requirement for retailer adjustments. The confirmed identity rule still requires the same product, color and size, so another available variant isn't a substitute. Request while the lower REI price is showing and keep its details as a precaution, without assuming availability decides approval.

Is REI required by law to match prices?

No legal right to a price match was identified. The FTC advises shoppers to check whether sellers offer matching; that isn't a survey of every state's laws. Under the REI price match policy, competitors' prices don't qualify, while REI's own-price adjustment has separate conditions.
