How Long Do You Have to Return Something to H&M?
H&M allows 30 days for standard returns. Online mail returns must be postmarked within 30 days of delivery, and late returns are refused.
H&M's help pages say items must be unworn, unwashed and resalable; the store policy requires attached tags. H&M does not publish universal packaging and accessory requirements, so keep those materials while deciding.
H&M does not define calendar versus business days, whether delivery day counts, weekend handling or cutoff times. Postmark a few days early rather than calculating a last-minute deadline; registering the return is a separate action.
Does registering an H&M return in time count?
Registration alone does not establish a timely H&M return: the standard online mail-return rule requires a postmark. H&M does not publish whether registration has an earlier cutoff, so register and ship the same day.
Example: Assume a standard online purchase, excluding ELIE SAAB H&M, registered on what the shopper counts as day 29. Posting it later does not preserve eligibility merely because registration happened earlier.
Store purchases and pickup orders
H&M does not publish the ordinary store-purchase clock start. As a precaution, count from purchase and take the item, receipt and attached tags to a store; mail eligibility for store purchases is not published.
Pickup-order and split-delivery start events, plus collected-pickup return-method restrictions, are also unpublished. Count from the earliest possible event—the pickup notice or first parcel delivery—and return early; ask support which route applies to collected orders.
Is there an H&M holiday return extension for 2026?
No 2026 US holiday extension was published in the reviewed returns policy or customer-service notices. Some guides list holiday dates H&M has not published; do not rely on them.
Use the standard 30 days unless H&M confirms an extension for your purchase.
Does H&M Charge for Returns?
H&M store returns are free; the standard mail-in online return charge is $5.99, deducted from the refund. Original shipping and handling are not refunded for routine returns.
| Route or charge | Published treatment | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Eligible store return | Free | H&M returns policy |
| Mail-in online return | $5.99 deducted; member wording differs below | H&M returns policy |
| Original shipping/handling | Not refunded | H&M returns policy |
| Restocking fee | Not mentioned | H&M US policy/help pages |
| Faulty-item fee waiver | Not published | H&M US policy/help pages |
H&M does not define whether the deduction applies per order, parcel or item, including combined packages or separate parcels. Check the amount shown for your return. If you shop both chains, our Zara return policy guide explains Zara's mailed-return arrangements.
Do H&M members get free mail returns?
H&M's main US returns page specifies the $5.99 mail deduction without a member exception, while a separate US membership page words it differently, advertising free online returns for members and free returns for Plus. Plan on $5.99 unless the return portal or refund email shows no fee; H&M's main policy makes eligible store returns free.
No longer member return window is published. Core/Plus outbound-shipping benefits on H&M's delivery page do not establish free return postage.
How to Return to H&M: Store or Mail
An eligible H&M store return is free and needs receipt/QR proof and attached tags; a standard mailed online return starts in the portal and carries the published $5.99 deduction. Read the official returns policy, or contact H&M if your item needs a different route.
Returning to an H&M store
- Check eligibility. Online HOME and other-brand items cannot go to stores; store-bought ELIE SAAB items require the original store, and online ELIE SAAB requires mail.
- Find a US store using H&M's Store Locator. Puerto Rico stores are excluded from this return/exchange route.
- Bring proof and attached tags. Bring the receipt; H&M's help pages also describe the in-store return QR code in the app or order-confirmation email.
Before leaving, check that the item and proof match. Do not assume the store can recover missing proof or issue an instant refund; separate store processing time is not published.
Mailing an online return through the portal
- Open Register a return. H&M's help pages instruct shoppers to register the items and reasons.
- Choose the offered return method. Follow the instructions displayed for your order.
- Pack the eligible items. If reusing a box containing only non-hazmat goods, remove its LQ Hazmat label.
- Get a timely postmark. Standard online returns by mail must be postmarked within 30 days of delivery; retain the evidence.
Check that each intended item is registered before shipping. H&M does not publish carriers, drop-offs, labels versus QR codes, printing, pickup or mailing addresses; use the portal's actual directions rather than choosing a carrier independently.
Sending several orders in one package
H&M's help pages say multiple orders may share a package if each return is registered separately. Whether that creates one or several $5.99 deductions is not published; do not assume a shared box means a shared fee.
Can You Return to H&M Without a Receipt?
H&M's store policy requires a receipt, but members can recover digital receipts for linked online and store purchases in My Account on hm.com or the app, according to the membership terms. H&M's help pages also describe an online order's app/email return QR code.
With no proof at all, the card terms permit a Merchandise Card for receiptless merchandise returns only subject to the return policy and H&M's discretion. Acceptance is not guaranteed. ID requirements, credit valuation, limits and bank-card lookup are not published; ask support before traveling.
Returning a gift to H&M
H&M does not publish gift-receipt acceptance or the gift recipient's refund destination. Contact Customer Service before visiting, and distinguish a merchandise gift from a gift card: card purchases themselves are non-refundable.
H&M Items With Different Return Rules
H&M's product exceptions can change both the deadline and destination. Check these before traveling to a store or starting a mail return.
ELIE SAAB H&M collection
As shown on H&M's US customer-service page on October 29, 2026, online ELIE SAAB H&M purchases must be returned by mail within 7 days of delivery. Store purchases must go to the original store within 3 days of purchase.
The notice gives no purchase-date range or end date and does not define postmark versus warehouse arrival for the seven-day period. Ship promptly and ask H&M to confirm the deadline action. H&M does not publish other collaboration or custom/personalized-item windows.
Can you return H&M HOME or other brands to a store?
No: online H&M HOME orders go to the warehouse, including furniture and lighting. H&M's delivery page excludes HOME from store returns, and its help pages describe the broader HOME warehouse route.
H&M's help pages say other brands bought on hm.com follow the package instructions and cannot go to stores. Brand-specific windows, fees and legal seller identities are not published; use those instructions rather than assuming every H&M rule applies.
Perfume, nail polish and other hazmat items
H&M does not accept routine returns of hazmat-classified goods, including certain perfumes, nail polish/remover and pressurized sprays. Contact Customer Service for a wrong or defective hazmat item before sending anything.
For a reused box containing only non-hazmat goods, remove the LQ Hazmat label so the label does not misidentify the contents.
Sale items, intimates and gift cards
H&M does not publish a current Final Sale rule or a complete list covering underwear, bras, hosiery, swimwear, opened cosmetics, earrings and face masks. If a product page or checkout marks something Final Sale or non-returnable, treat it that way and ask support before buying.
H&M Gift, Merchandise and Promotional Card purchases are non-refundable under the card terms.
When Will You Get Your H&M Refund?
H&M's help pages say to allow up to 14 days for refund issuance, without defining the starting event or day type. Bank/card posting time is not published, so this is not an end-to-end arrival promise.
| Stage | Online mail return | Store return |
|---|---|---|
| Return window | Postmark within 30 days of delivery for standard items | 30 days; start: Not published |
| H&M processing | Warehouse processing generates an email; contact H&M if no return email after 14 days. Allow up to 14 days for issuance; trigger not defined. | Not published |
| Bank/card posting | Not published | Not published |
The returns policy sends refunds to the original payment method. Keep bank-issued gift cards because the refund returns to that card. If you paid with Klarna, H&M's contact page sends payment questions to Klarna's customer service; questions about the return itself stay with H&M. H&M gift-card reissue, mixed-payment allocation and PayPal or Klarna refund timing are not published.
The standard mail deduction and non-refundable original shipping reduce what comes back.
How returns affect H&M points and bonus vouchers
H&M's membership terms deduct points earned on returned items. Bonus-voucher purchases refund only the amount paid: the allocated voucher saving is forfeited and does not move onto retained items.
H&M's membership terms say the voucher saving is split across the items bought and stays unchanged on kept items, while the membership FAQ says it is spread evenly; neither explains items at different prices. Before returning one item, check its paid price on the digital receipt in My Account; use H&M's displayed receipt/refund amount, especially for unequal-price items.
Example: Assume two $40 items, a $5 bonus voucher, no tax or other discounts, and an eligible return. Each item's paid price is $37.50. Returning one in store refunds $37.50; by mail, if exactly one $5.99 deduction applies, the result is $31.51. The kept item stays at $37.50.
Can You Exchange an H&M Item?
Yes: H&M offers store exchanges at US stores excluding Puerto Rico, with receipt and attached tags. For bonus-voucher purchases specifically, H&M's membership help describes a store exchange for an item of the same value.
An online exchange process, price-difference handling and stock rules are not published. For an online order, returning and reordering is a practical alternative, with the standard mail deduction applying if you mail it back. For another chain's process, see our Uniqlo return and exchange guide.
Wrong, Damaged or Defective H&M Orders
H&M's help pages direct incorrect orders to the warehouse route; contact support about a missing item. H&M's US terms direct damaged or lost shipment claims to Customer Service, and wrong/defective hazmat items require contact too.
H&M does not publish a general defect deadline, post-window remedy, required photos, tag exemption or delivery/return-fee reimbursement. Contact H&M before mailing a faulty item rather than assuming the ordinary process settles those questions.
Does US law give you extra return rights?
The FTC Cooling-Off Rule excludes entirely online/mail/phone sales and sales negotiated at a seller's permanent business premises. That rule does not add a change-of-mind right to ordinary H&M online or store purchases.
FTC complaint guidance advises collecting purchase documents, checking deadlines and contacting the seller; a manufacturer may need contacting after the seller's deadline. If H&M refuses a return you believe is eligible, the FTC's guidance suggests asking for a manager, keeping dated records of every contact and then sending a written complaint with copies of your receipt and return evidence. That advice does not guarantee a refund.
H&M Return Policy Mistakes to Avoid
- Paying the mail deduction when an eligible store could take the return free.
- Treating portal registration as proof of a timely postmark.
- Taking online HOME or another brand's item to a store.
- Assuming an ELIE SAAB purchase gets the standard 30 days.
- Mailing restricted perfume, nail polish or sprays without contacting support, or leaving an inapplicable LQ Hazmat label on a reused box.
- Expecting a forfeited bonus-voucher saving back.
- Waiting for an unannounced holiday extension.
The H&M return policy leaves several operational details unpublished, and some guidance comes from help pages rather than the main policy. The portal's order-specific instructions and H&M's emails supply the answer for your return; see how StoreReturners checks official policies for our source approach.
Questions shoppers ask
Can I use UPS instead of USPS for an H&M return?
H&M does not publish a carrier list. Use the return method offered when you register your order in the portal, including its carrier and label directions. Do not substitute a nearby carrier just because a different shopper used it or an older guide names it.
Can I return an H&M order in Puerto Rico?
H&M's US store return and exchange policy excludes Puerto Rico stores. H&M does not publish mail-return availability from Puerto Rico or other territories, or cross-border rules. Contact H&M Customer Service before sending a package rather than treating the store exclusion as an answer about postal returns.
Does H&M refund the original shipping charge?
H&M's returns policy excludes original shipping and handling refunds for routine returns. That delivery charge is separate from the standard $5.99 mail-return deduction. H&M does not publish faulty-item shipping reimbursement or a return-fee waiver, so contact support before mailing something defective and ask how those charges will be handled.
Can H&M restrict my account for returning too much?
Yes. H&M's membership terms say abnormally frequent or high returns may lead to payment-method changes, account restrictions or termination; guest orders may also be canceled. H&M states no numeric threshold, so there is no published number of returns that is safe from review.
What happens if I paid with a bank-issued gift card?
H&M's returns policy says to keep a gift card issued by a financial institution because the refund goes back to that card. Do not discard it after spending its balance. H&M gift-card reissue and mixed-payment refund allocation are separate details that H&M does not publish; ask support if those apply.
